This Week In Sales: Radiant Historia Doesn’t Radiate Very Brightly

In terms of major releases, the week of November 1st – 7th saw the release of Radiant Historia on the DS and Fallout: New Vegas on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Radiant History didn’t do all that great, but again, it’s a good thing to keep market conditions and development budgets in mind before considering any game a commercial failure.

New Vegas, on the other hand, did pretty well across both platforms it released on. Neither title even came close to removing God Eater Burst, Mario All-Stars and Pokémon from their positions though.

Here’s the top-20 for the week:

Radiant History was a fairly small budget game, so it would be unwise to expect it to move a lot of units.

    • Ladius

I agree with you, but Atlus itself is expecting LTD sales of Radiant Historia to reach a 138k figure.

    • Serge73

Was it? I mean, I guess a DS game can only be so “high budget” in this day and age, but I thought it looked like it had pretty good production values for a DS game…

  • Code

The screens still make me want Radiant Historia regardless of whether it sold well or not though >w<'

    • SolidusSnake

It looks really stylish. Hopefully we’ll get a localization *fingers crossed*

        *also crosses her fingers*

        • Kris

*Crosses fingers for Radiant Historia and the absolutely beautiful Solatorobo*

  • EvilAkito

The game certainly has cool artwork and looks fun from the screen shots. I’ll definitely pick it up if it gets localized.

Like I said in the How much Naruto sold post. The game will just make around 100,000 in Japan. That’s not good for a game of that quality. I know Namco said they just want to sell 1 million world wide. Still if that game was on Wii it would be called a flop!

  • evilmoogle

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYWi6-BcGCQfallout did well.
surprised since it’s a US title. maybe they saw this video.

Radiant Historia, AKA “Chrono Trigger 2″ for what it’s worth, will unfortunately be a total failure in Japan if things continue as they are. For the life of me I can’t understand what the hell is going on with the gaming community in this country. They are becoming more and more otaku-oriented and thus the only profit centers are literally otaku nonsense like Gundam or Idolmaster, or mindless fanservice like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Radiant Historia should have been a smash hit for the amount of talent, effort, and sheer brilliance that was put into the game.

Solatorobo should also have been a smash success rather than the huge commercial failure it ended up. I just finished it today and was totally floored by the ending and the game in general, even if it was a bit on the annoying/repetitive side.

    • malek86

You just need to look at the increasing YoY amount of fanservice anime, to get the idea that Japan seems to be going in a bad direction.

      • SolidusSnake

inorite. K-on was the fourth most tweeted word in Japan in 2010… that’s right, K-on, a show about mentally challenged anime girls eating cake and playing Rock Band *vomits uncontrollably*

Hey, I’m thinking of picking up this game after all after seeing so many good reviews (I just got a Mario DSi XL too w/ the bigger screen), is the footstep thing really that grating? You seem to have pretty good taste 99% of the time (other than our diverging views on FFX lol). Is the traveling back thru time interesting like Chrono Trigger or tedious like Infinite Loop (bad Butterfly Effect deja vu)? I heard you could skip the scenes entirely the 2nd time thru, not just fast forwarding dialogue. Game looks interesting, but I’m not that big on portables (I think the XL would fix that) and have a long backlog alrdy. I would hate to miss it thought if this is really like a Chrono Trigger spiritual successor (I’m only okay w/ Shimomura). and this is nothing like Sands of Destruction right?

  • d19xx

I think it’s great the Fallout is selling in Jp. It might give Japanese developers a hint that they ****ing need to ditch some staple but stale game design and concept that they have abused for years. e.g Super Deformed characters, decisions that just loops till you choose the first option, etc…..

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexander-Groce/100000039461956 Alexander Groce

And use bland Western designs that all look like the same guy? No thanks. I prefer their stale staples to yours.

      • d19xx

I specifically mentioned super deformed characters. I don’t remember mentioning that they use the bald space marine design.

Do you even know what super deform is?

  • Serge73

Oh man, this is really disappointing. I figured it would do pretty well, considering it being on DS and being an RPG in Japan. I guess the times are changing…

I really want this to be localized, but I’m starting to get worried. Not only is it not doing well in Japan, but JRPGs have been struggling in the US lately too, not to mention by the time it would be localized, the 3DS would be out already….u_u

  • karasuKumo

Looks great! The art for it is awesome and the battles look interesting. Looks like a classic JRPG and it’s on the DS so I’m surprised it sold so little.

  • Joanna

Sad to see Radiant Historia and Solatorobo doing so poorly. I hope they get a chance to redeem themselves here (but I guess with just how saturated the DS market is, I don’t see them performing much better T______T). All I can say is I would definitely pick both up.Golden Sun also isn’t doing too hot. I hope it does better over here. I’ve already pre-ordered it. So fingers crossed! Maybe that will convince NoA to bring more DS games over.
