Radiant Historia Time Twists Into Stores This February [Update: Screens]

By Spencer . November 22, 2010 . 7:14am

image Yes, Atlus is bringing Radiant Historia to North America and the Nintendo DS game should be in stores before the Nintendo 3DS arrives. Atlus is shooting for a February release.

Radiant Historia is a project developed with ex-Radiata Stories staff and members from the Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey team. In the game, players travel through time and alter events to prevent a world calamity. Stock, the main character, gains this power after he is captured during a battle with the warring land Granorg. Naturally, Radiant Historia has multiple endings.

During battle, Radiant Historia places heroes and monsters on a grid. Players can set up combo attacks depending on the turn order and the position of enemies. But, you don’t have to fight enemies either. You can see foes on the field and use skills to slip by them undetected.

Update: North American copies have one of Atlus’ spoils. Launch copies include a music CD with songs from composer Yoko Shimomura. Radiant Historia is slated for February 22, 2011.

I have been pissed off at Atlus USA for their lack of JRPG localizations in 2010 (and still am : ), but… THANK YOU, DEAR ATLUS! *___*

Radiant Historia is one of the most interesting JRPGs of the last months due to its political theme and multi-timelines, can’t wait to play it as soon as it’s out :)

  • Good, I look forward to popping this baby into my DS.

  • Thats also when they bring us Naruto Shinobi Rumble (which looks to be a fantastic game)

I hope the US boxart looks similar to the JPN one, because that looks gorgeous.

  • Pichi

Glad that their bringing this one over. Sounds very intriguing. Still concerned that Atlus isn’t localizing third-party RPG types, though.

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

Why localize third-party titles when you have games like Catherine, Persona 2, Blaze Union, and Radiant Historia available to you.

However I agree that there are a few third-party titles I wouls have liked to see here, but with the way the economy is these days I could see why Atlus has decided to play it safe this year and stay with their first-party releases.

      • Zeik56

Blaze Union is also technically a 3rd party title.

      • Hraesvelgr

Personally, I’d say, why localize third-party titles when actual Atlus developed games are better than a good majority of the non-Atlus titles they release?

  • at least atlus is finally getting off there lazy asses

1 localized game in 2011 does not a company make

      @[email protected]

Lazy…? I thought this game only came out a couple weeks ago… And Catherine isn’t even out. And neither is Persona 2…

      Sooo lazy. They should just run every game through Google translation… @[email protected];

      • Volcynika

Need a Google translated game with Atlus USA employee voice overs.

        • Exkaiser

          I’d play it.

      • Joanna

        Well said Confused-chan!

I sense some people are still a bit but hurt over Atlus publishing a few different types of games instead of only JRPGs. I would love Atlus to keep publishing niche Japanese games, but I don’t think it’s my place to spew hateful messages and tell them how to run their company. I simply shall not support any of the new games I don’t like and let my money do the talking.

Actually spewing these kinds of messages will probably be more detrimental in the long run, as I wouldn’t consider bringing something over to some entitled and rude fans.

    • Volcynika

Posts like these make me laugh.

    • Zeik56

2011 hasn’t even started, they’ve got plenty of time to announce more games.

  • Next announcement will be Catherine.

    • Either that or Persona 2…

      • yes,persona 2

      • jj984jj

        Hopefully it’s this.

      • Zeik56

Persona 2 seems a lot more likely, since it’s coming out in Japan first. Plus it’s Persona.

    • Yes please. They have to and once Catherine’s out. Tease us with Persona 5.

      • I’m hoping for Blaze Union… they need to localize that.

        • neocatzon

“I’m hoping for Blaze Union… they MUST localize that.”

          • Hahaha, yeah. It would be nice to have more Yggdra world backstory.

  • Don’t have a DS but glad for people who were waiting for this. :)

  • regreto

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Yes! One of my most anticipated games, this is excellent news.

  • RAVENKam

Thank you Atlus, you people freaking ROCK!

  • Soma

I am definitely pre-ordering this game. Thanks, Atlus. I never doubted you for a moment.

  • kylehyde

Is good to know that Atlus still loves the DS, but I’m still waiting for the localization of Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier EXCEED. Anyway this games looks great and interesting. Thanks Atlus.

  • hadjimurad

cayenne is to 911 GT2 as naruto is to radiant historia. gotta have the money makers, to fund the niches. (also, this doesn’t imply the money makers suck, they are just more profitable)

  • Extra_Life

Never mind it being released before the 3DS, with that, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Ar Tonelico 3 and Ys Chronicles, I’m not going to be able to afford a 3DS!

    • the total price of those games may barely approach half the cost of the 3DS…

      • PersonaBull

        ~$180 for those four games
        ~$250-300 for a 3DS

Also, Extra_Life’s point was that with ~$180 worth of games to buy, the 3DS isn’t an option no matter how cheap/expensive it ends up, and I agree. The amount of games I’d like to get day 1 this spring is definitely hurting the option of getting a 3DS anywhere close to launch.

        • Exkaiser

Yeah, I’m personally splitting a 3DS’ price between myself and my wife. Too much cool stuff coming out in early 2011.

        • Extra_Life

Yeah, that’s where I was going… I really want a 3DS, but I also can’t miss out on the games I mentioned (I’ve preordered the ones I can already). So, unless I find some more pounds, the 3DS may have to wait a little while. Hopefully that isn’t the case though!

  • Darn that update…that musical cd seems to die for, maybe I will have to get the game even though it goes against half of that which I love for. I love the character portraits.

  • PersonaBull

Hopefully this shows how fast they can crank out Catherine once that’s finished up. Clearly Atlus has been working on bringing over Radiant Historia for a little while now if they’re shooting for February 22nd.

Either that or I’m afraid of how shoddy the translation will be. But, I’m an optimist about such things!

    • I think its they just held off on announcing it; isnt this like ~4 months in advance?

      • PersonaBull

That’s basically what I said: “Clearly Atlus has been working on bringing over Radiant Historia for a little while now if they’re shooting for February 22nd.”

    • Zeik56

Catherine will take quite a bit longer to localize than this game. Catherine looks like it’s going to have a pretty hefty amount of dialogue, most of it voiced. Even if they announce it partway into localization like they appear to have done with this game I doubt we’d see Catherine sooner than Fall/early Winter 2011.

      • They cant announce Catherine until it releases in Japan right? (I dont recall many of their games being announced for localization before their formal release over there)

        • Zeik56

It happens. Not very often with Atlus games, but it’s not like they can’t do it. I’d figure even if they do start localization early they won’t officially announce it until after the Japanese release though.

      • PersonaBull

I was thinking more that, if I’m thinking correctly about Radiant Historia being worked on so quickly (a set date so soon after Japan release is pretty fast, even for just text dialogue), an in-house Atlus game such as Catherine may already be in the process of localization as well.

It seems to be a growing trend, since another big name happens to be simultaneously localizing right behind production (Dissidia).

That, and I’d totally be okay with just the Japanese track. If the localization only has an English track I’m going to be really sad.

        • Zeik56

Atlus won’t release it with only a Japanese voice track. They’ve never done it before and I don’t see any reason they’d make an exception with Catherine. I generally prefer an English dub anyway, so I’d be extremely disappointed if it was only the Japanese. Best case scenario we get a dual-voice track, which isn’t out of the question.

  • jj984jj

Whooooo! And a Shimomura CD as a bonus? I love you Atlus!!

  • vadde939

  • Nice, this will be a good ATLUS adition… still.. LUMINOUS ARC 3 arggg, im gonna repeat the same thing in every atlus related thread… like in every namco bandai thread, i repeat tales of everything….

    • Joanna

Oh, I’m with you. I shall continue to mention LA3 until I am blue in the face. I really really want it.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

  • Exkaiser

Pretty surprised to see it getting localized, in a good way. Its sales weren’t exactly stunning, as I recall.

    • Zeik56

I’m not surprised, internally developed games are something that Atlus USA almost never passes up these days.

  • Sweet, it seems Atlus didn’t forget about us niche JRPG gamers after all! I will certainly buy this. ^_^

    • Thats an odd statement to say considering that Knights in the Nightmare for the PSP released just this very month

      • Isn’t that a port of a DS game? Ports don’t count! :p

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Will this finally convince people that Atlus hasn’t “abandoned” any of their fans? God, I hope so.

  • Aoshi00

whew… good thing didn’t import, had a feeling this would come here. wanted to get it from good word of mouth but was deterred by the $70 price tag..

  • Tokyo Guy

I can’t say I am the least bit surprised. It’s shocking how many people start ranting and raving over game X not releasing outside Japan. In this day and age it’s basically a given that any RPG that is NOT made or published by Nintendo will release overseas.

    • Joanna

I don’t know about that….there are plenty of Japan-only and non-Nintendo RPGs in Japan still: the Wizardry games, Tales of…, Luminous Arc 3, SaGa 2 and Atelier Lina, just to name a few.

  • Joanna

    Keep the JRPGs coming!

CD is great too…wish they would throw in an artbook as well since the art is gorgeous~

Also, I detect a slew of DS games for the last two months before 3DS….and my wallet is already crying! I know I shall be picking this and Phantom Detective for sure! Okamiden too…although it’s slated for March, so it should give my wallet some breathing room. I hope we get Solatorobo too~
