Shishio In Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen, Aniplex Celebrate Series’ 15th Anniversary

By Ishaan . December 19, 2010 . 1:01pm

By now, Rurouni Kenshin fans should be familiar with Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen on the PSP, a traditional 2D fighter being published by Namco Bandai on March 10th, 2011. Saisen is actually part of a project celebrating Rurouni Kenshin’s 15th anniversary in Japan.

Oh, and judging by the image above on the game’s official website, Shishio Makoto is confirmed to be making an appearance, although we don’t know if he’ll be playable.

To celebrate Kenshin’s 15th, Aniplex will also make the OVAs and anime series, along with what seems to be a mention of unreleased footage, available on PC, PlayStation Network and mobiles in Japan. Details as to just how this will all play out are scarce for the moment, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

What? So we didnt even knew he was going to be?…. Im expecting all the (or the most important) enemies that appeared in the anime, appear here… it would be pretty lame if they dont

    • Aoshi00

Yay, Shishio-sama lives and your PSP would spontaneously combust in 15 mins :) Well, I see Aoshi’s Kaiten Kembu and Saitou’s Gatotsu Zero Stance in the screenshots… looks like this would cover at least the end of the Kyoto-arc, might not even have a story mode…

Not really expecting much from this PSP fighter, maybe there would be a Jinchuu anime series/OVA after all to celebrate Kenshin’s 15th anniversary, just like Saint Seiya got its Hades OVAs 13 yrs after the TV series ended.. just can’t help but feel a PS3 2D fighter or Ultimate Ninja Storm 2-like game would be more fitting for a Kenshin comeback. As big as a Kenshin fan I am, it’s still hard to get excited over this..

Also, the videos on PSN are irrelevant to people outside Jpn anyway because even a Jpn account won’t let you access the video section, unlike Zune on Jpn Live (you could rent/stream movies/anime w/ Jpn MS points).. very stingy..

i personally think that all fighting game genres should evolve into the fighting style of ultimate ninja storm series, it feels more epic when you fight xD Of course, not all the fighters how we know it would do good when doing this, like blazblue/guiltygear, its better if is in 2D chars.

        • Aoshi00

yea, if Kenshin’s story was told by UNS2 styled cutscenes, I would die of heart attack :) I still pre-ordered this anyway even though I said I wasn’t excited about a PSP fighter.. there seems to be nice pre-order bonus like themes, booklet, and Kenshin alarm clock, wonder if it’s a separate one or using your PSP as the alarm. “Wake up degozaru! Ororoo….”

Kenshin doesn’t really have that many fighting characters. There’s Kenshin, Sanosuke, Saito, perhaps Yahiko and Kaoru, the Oniwabanshu, the Ten Swords, and Enishi’s group, and maybe someone else like Jinne or Kenshin’s master. We’re looking at 30 or less. Surely they could make them all available.

Unless they already have a sequel planned.

I don’t know if Aoshi’s personal Oniwaban group will be in it, considering what happened there… But I could see Misao’s family (especially the grandad!) being in it. Oh, and Hiko had better be available or at least unlockable.

Ten swords would be neat. Someone like Kamatari could be one of the heavy-hitter characters and provide a very different experience from, say, Soujiro.

Side note: I remember Watsuki did some designs for SamSho 5. Yoshitora Tokugawa always sort of reminded me of Cho from the Ten Swords.

Good luck fitting Fuji in the UMD =P Okina would be pretty cool. I was surprised with his “fight” against Aoshi, even if he only managed to bruise his face. I would love to play as Hiko, but he is severely overpowered, even Watsuki says so… But he’ll be in, I’m sure.

I THINK Tokugawa’s design is kind of based on an alternative design that Cho had. At least, I remember seeing Cho’s alternative design in some scans from the Kanzenban re-release, and it looked a bit like that one.

Edit: Found it. I don’t know if this one was created after or before Samurai Showdown 5, though…

Haha, I figured as much. Thanks for the link! Yea, there’s a fair few fighters in Samurai Shodown that are reminiscent of Kenshin characters, whether they were designed by Watsuki or not. I remember getting into Samsho originally because of Kenshin and my eyes went straight to Ukyo at the character select screen because he holds his sword in that battoujutsu stance!

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yeah, lots of influences between the two (Shizumaru is the spitting image of Kenshin!). Ukyo <3

It was cool that SNK invited Watsuki to create a few characters for the series.

Edit: How disappointing. I just read in the SNK wikia that Shizumaru is actually based on some character from Yu Yu Hakusho.

          • malek86

Apparently Shizumaru was inspired by Kurama. But honestly, he looks nothing like him. If it must be a YYH character, I thought it would be Jin.

        • malek86

“I would love to play as Hiko, but he is severely overpowered, even Watsuki says so… But he’ll be in, I’m sure.”

That’s never been a problem for fighting games anyway. It’s the reason why you can defeat Goku SSJ3 while playing as a Saibaiman.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

… You’re right. Hilarious example, by the way xD

      • malek86

I doubt about the Oniwabanshu too, although at least Hannya might make it. And among the other characters, there are some who would definitely be difficult to put in (the huge guy and Shishio’s fianceè for the Ten Swords, and maybe the arm cannon dude and the puppeteer for Enishi’s group). Everyone else is fair game, nut popularity is a different matter. Overall, I doubt weìre gonna see more than 16 characters.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Hah, yeah. I do hope they squeeze Anji in, though. Just so they can have that one bulky looking character all fighting games are supposed to include.

    • doomspeller10

I wouldn’t mind if there are only a few characters provided they are all unique and fun to play with, like the first smash bros.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Unreleased footage?! Oh my. New game, new footage… And those are part of a bigger project. Could we expect some surprises?

    … Jinchuu related?

    • gatotsu911

      Pretty please?

  • Aiddon

I demand they make an adaptation of the Jinchu for the 15th anniversary. Something like that would be a king-sized bucket of awesome

    • kylehyde

      10000000000% agree

  • holyPaladin

    Now where’s Soujiro?

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Using shukuchi. That’s why you can’t see him.

  • gatotsu911

Damnit Aniplex, is a new Kenshin anime really that much to ask for? Every fan has been begging for it for years. Why leave us high and dry?

  • ipatz

I really wish this comes to Wii as well or may be 3DS.

  • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

I hope the unreleased footage is what the final episode was suppose to be (in other words, an awesome send-off instead of a boring 24 minutes). Anyway I hope you bring this to the west Namco, even if it’s in limited numbers.
