With 9,862 Votes, Japan’s Most Popular Video Game Character Is…

By Spencer . December 21, 2010 . 12:39pm

image Yahoo! Japan held a poll to see which video game character readers liked the most. Nominations for characters were made by tracking searches on Yahoo! Japan, views on their game pages, and news stories between November 1, 2009 and October 31, 2010.

The winner is… (dadadadan) Mario with 9,862 votes.

OK, that was expected, but other spots on the list may surprise you.

1.) Mario from Super Mario Bros. (9,862 votes)

2.) Hatsune Miku from Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd (6,420 votes)

3.) Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes (4,333 votes)

4.) Naked Snake from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (4,142 votes)

5.) Felyne from Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Felyne Village (4,033 votes)

6.) Reshiram from Pokémon Black (3,208 votes)

7.) Wada-Don from Taiko no Tatsujin DS 3 (2,962 votes)

8.) Nene Anegasaki from LovePlus + (2,446 votes)

9.) Totori from Atelier Totori (868 votes)

10.) Black Heart from Hyperdimension Neptunia (707 votes)

I don’t know if I would count Hatsune Miku and Date Masamune as video game characters considering one has a line of Vocaloid and the other is a famous samurai. Still interesting to see those characters and the Felyne beat out a Pokémon. Also, Totori and one of the console goddess from Hyperdimension Neptunia squeaked in the top ten.

  • Are they just not fans of Yukimaru Sanada?! Date? wow.

  • haha love plus… Where is link? Or Zelda, or knowing japan, Cloud, spehiroth, and etc, etc, etc… well, this isnt very official anyway xD

    • Skua

It just means that the Japanese game industry is losing mainstream appeal (not surprising considering how little they release on current gen consoles), unless these Yahoo polls have traditionally been dominated by niche otaku types.

Say what you will about overly popular characters (Final Fantasy, Zelda, Metal Gear), but their presence on popularity polls would indicate a healthy interest in games amongst the masses.

      • This is an “Of the Year Poll”. And I quote “Nominations for characters were made by tracking searches on Yahoo! Japan, views on their game pages, and news stories between November 1, 2009 and October 31, 2010.” That’s why all the games mentioned here are the ones from the past year.

  • malek86

As usual, these sort of polls are too influenced by the time they were made in. Next year, we’re gonna have an almost completely different list.

    • Code

Exactly, although Mario and Big Boss I think deserve to stick around >w<'

    • Make sense since this is a yearly poll ;)

    • Aoshi00

Well, of course a “favorite list” is always contemporary, I like different things at different times too. Like in the 80-90’s, the favorite male and female anime chars in polls like Animage were always Ayukawa Madoka (Kimagure Orange Road), Nausicaa, Nadia (Secret of Blue Water), Kurama/Hiei (YuYu), etc nowadays the kiddies are like Ayu-who? Ayukawa and Nadia had been my goddesses when I was young, now Nene-san’s more of my ideal :) But they still have a special place in my heart…

It’s hard to do an “all-time favorite” list because the older generation quit anime a long time ago and the younger generation wouldn’t know about the older stuffs, so…

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Well, duh. Each year new characters are introduced and others are forgotten.

  • I am glad there are no Final Fantasy characters on that list.

    • Hope should have been up there, he totally made that game awesome!!!!

      • “Hope” is a girl’s name.

      • Second time i read it and i still cant belive it… Hope was the most boring, cliche, “who the hell he think he is” character ive ever seen -.-

        • Would you say… Karol from Tales of Vesperia is a better character? (I’ve heard he’s rather useless except for one small part of the story)

          • *sniff* havent played tales of vesperia waahh T_T i want ps3 ver D:

          • Testsubject909

            Many of us do…

Seriously. Namco’s sitting on some possible profit and they’re just skipping out on it, betting on an already unstable wager that they can appeal to a western audience by poorly mimicking them.

It’s sickening how stupid their directions are sometimes. And all the while, they’re also losing their core fanbase while attempting to gain a new fanbase in an attempt to increase their profit, as opposed to stabilizing their profit.

Greed and Idiocy. These two factors haunt us…

And within Idiocy is poor marketing, seriously. As well as poor customer relations and an inability to properly plan for both short term and long term profit. If they keep up with this stupidity, they’ll soon find themselves on a losing ship.

If so. Then I call it, in two year’s time, Squeenix and Namco Bandai are going to do a merger in a vain hope to combine their assets and survive.

          • Testsubject909

Karol is surprisingly handy at the start. He’s a much smarter healer then the actual healer of the group, which is odd as he’s a heavy hitter.

There are also some videos out there showing Karol doing some pretty sweet lenghty combos, so he can be broken if you put the effort into it. But he’s not as optimized for offense as others are, nor for healing as the healer is.

Though he’s much more capable in terms of healing early on. Having an AOE healing ‘attack’ which is cast rather rapidly, and which he uses freely, as opposed to the healer who just stands around doing nothing like an idiot…

(At least on the 360 version in which me and my buddy has been playing co-op for a while.)

          • Hm… then my friend is an r-tard and I need to stop listening to him for anything.

          • goronyan

Small part of the story? He’s the leader of Brave Vesperia for god sake @[email protected]
seriously for me karol, judith, flynn and estelle are a pain to control and I still can’t manage to cancel artes and make good combos. My favourite are Patty or Ossan as main character ftw

        • Every personality has been done before already so dont throw the cliche card!! I’m pretty sure if FF13 wasnt name Final Fantasy 13 people would praise it! But who knows? the gameplay was kinda lame being able to fully control only one character.

          • Yeah… but know there are these kind of cliche personalities that are just way too used, and when it comes to child characters most of them are too annoying -_-‘

      • Kirbysuperstar2

He was Shinji Ikari with a boomerang. Not awesome.

        • Testsubject909

I… wouldn’t be too sure about that.

Did Hope masturbate to the unconscious and heavily injured girl he has the hots for, in the same room?

It’s hard to drop as low as Shinji Ikari.

          • At least Shinji acted like his age… xD

      • Testsubject909

        Hope is a mixed bag.

From what I’ve seen of most fans, he’s generally considered annoying and too cliched/one dimensional.

By most people’s account, he’s one of the key reasons as to why FF13 is so bad. (One amongst many)

…Seriously, they should’ve just went with the title Fabula Nova Crystalis rather then claim that FFXIII, versus and agito were all part of a “Fabula Nova Crystalis Pack”…

A new title would’ve allowed fans to accept the game further despite it’s flaws as opposed to dividing the final fantasy fandom.

But hey. Let Squeenix crash and burn a few times until it refines the formula and actually start understanding their fanbase…

        • Locklear93

Basically EVERY character in FFXIII was annoying, cliched, and one dimensional. Hope was just the most aggressively so. :P

          • neon6

In my opinion, I thought Sazh was the only good character from that game. He’s certainly the most humane character compared to everyone else in your party. Though I probably would’ve liked the other characters more if the story didn’t take so long to build up, they explained the terms as they went along, and hired someone to create better dialogue. Also the “Fabula Nova Crystalis Pack” will survive. I mean 13 was in development for 4 long years and while it didn’t live up to it’s hype as the 2nd coming of FF7, I don’t believe Square Enix is stupid enough to drop the ball 3 times in a row.

    • Testsubject909

That all depends on which name we hear.

Edgar from Figaro for example wouldn’t be a bad addition considering his badassery. Or the iconic black mage from FF1.

      but I digress…

My vote goes to Yuri from Shadow Hearts, though that doesn’t matter does it?

      • Yuri deserves to be on everyone’s best JRPG main character list. He’s just ridiculously awesome

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

        2 sentences is digressing?

  • karasuKumo

Mario and Miku were too obvious but Black Heart was a surprise. I’m not really into Metal Gear games but I know who Snake is but what’s this with “Naked Snake”? lol

    • Draparde

Naked snake = MGS3,Peace walker (or big boss) solid snake = the one in MGS,MGS4

  • mario and big boss are the only ones on that list that deserve to be there

    • Testsubject909

It’s a popularity contest. Not a “Best character” contest.

Some of these win by fame outside of gaming and others because of their recent addition which still remain fresh.

So, I’d digress. Most of these seems to fit just fine, I’d guess.

    • raymk

yeah i can’t agree either its a popularity contest not an who’s the best. Date masmune deserves to be on that list as well.

  • Tom_Phoenix

Am I the only one who ISN’T suprised to see Hatsune Miku up there? That said, I am suprised by some of the niché choices in the poll.

    • Locklear93

I wasn’t surprised by Miku at all, though I wouldn’t have guessed she’d hit number 2. The GUST and Compile Heart characters? Yeah, that was a surprise, and I love GUST.

  • Aoshi00

It’s nice to see Nene up there, I heart Nene-san too :) Minaguchi Yuuko has been my favorite seiyuu for years, her cute and gentle voice just melts me :) The other choices are cool and interesting too :)

  • The virtual Diva got second place huh…nice.

Black heart is a big surprise…and Totori too..for me at least.

  • Those poll numbers look suspiciously low to me.

  • MarkMario

    Miku!!! Yay :3

  • I can believe Hatsune Miku made that list. Japan faps to her, I swear, lol. Granted, I really like her too, but damn!

I don’t really understand #7, #9, or #10 though. I definitely feel like there were better suited candidates for those spots.

  • Luigi…no…it cannot be…where’s Luigi!?

  • So…Where’s Sonic? No love for Alex Kidd? Is Waluigi really that unpopular?

  • I’m surprised that sonic isn’t up

    • Wasnt during the time frame only the best kart racing game, Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing, had come out?

  • Well this poll explains why you can’t swing a dead cat lately without seeing Miku make some kind of cameo.

  • This gives me more reason to hate Miku… these are the worst results I’ve ever seen, Miku shouldn’t be allowed since she’s not a real video game character, that’s like putting Peter Griffin from (ugh) Family Guy on a list of popular gaming characters when he was only in one game.

  • ive never even heard of most of these people lol i was expecting like Link or something
