Phantasy Star Goes Eternal On Mobage Town

By Ishaan . December 27, 2010 . 12:00pm

This winter will mark the entry of a yet another Sega franchise into the social games space. Joining the browser-based Sakura Wars, Shenmue Town on Mobage Town, and Yakuza on GREE, will be Phantasy Star: Eternal Hunters.

The neat hook here is that Eternal Hunters will place you in different ingame areas, depending on your location in real-life, detected through your mobile. The game takes place on an unknown planet, where you’ve been sent to gather data that has been scattered throughout, following the crash of a research vessel.

looks like somebody is going for the Monster Hunter route :D

    • Except it’s a social game, so really…Can’t see how it’s going the Monster Hunter Route *shrugs*

      • Also, wasn’t Phantasy Star first, Phantasy Star Online setting the basis for the current games?

Yup, Monster Hunter definitely picked a lot of what it is from PSO. It ain’t just because I’m a huge PSO fan (I am) but looking at where gaming is today, PSO really is the father of so much.

MMOs were an at the margins thing that had little expanded past folks using the medium to enhance the pen and paper experience. For the first time one could be amazed when they sat in front of their TV, blasted some boomas and killed the dragon in party in real time with someone who could literally be anywhere.

The social experience was as much a part of the game as the combat. Did that nasty thing called real life mean you just had 15-20 minutes to blast some baddies? Taken care of. Did you want to spend an evening in a graphic chat room where all of a sudden you noticed 10 hours were gone? Also handled.

So yes, I’d love to see them step up and give us more than just this.

          • PSO2. Can’t wait. 8D

          • Not really the father. It’s like the succesor I’ll give you that. But calling it the father of so much is a little overkill.

actually capcom made a monster hunter social game ^^

i only said it because not only Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter share similar ideas(4 player co-op play) albeit different gameplay. but because phantasy star is following the footsteps of MH ^^

        • M’iau M’iaut

PSO has at least 3-4 years on MH. PSO hit the states in winter 2000. It was already up to Ep I/II on the XBox and GC in 2002. Monster Hunter is like 04/05, and never was the event in the US of PSO.

        • I see I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you meant going around killing stuff, looting and making better weapons lol and not as in being a social game.

Thanks, but I’ll hold out for Phantasy Star Online 2. (And pray that it doesn’t turn out to be some sort of freemium monstrosity.)
