Soulcalibur Director Sounds Off On Guest Characters

By Ishaan . January 5, 2011 . 12:42pm

New game Soulcalibur game director, Daishi Odashima, isn’t ready to start talking in detail about the title just yet, but following in the footsteps of his colleague, Tekken series director, Katsuhiro Harada, he’s been fairly active on Twitter nonetheless.

The picture above is a snap of all the planners involved with the new Soulcalibur game. Odashima had it taken on December 28th, which was their last day of work before the holidays. Apparently, Odashima kept himself busy enough through his vacation, however.

Despite the fact that he doesn’t speak English, Odashima has been talking to fans of the series and taking their thoughts into account with the help of a translator. He says he spent New Year’s Eve reading his followers’ comments.

For what it’s worth, he seems to realize that Soulcalibur 2 and Soulcalibur 3 are the most popular games in the series. “I thought SC2 and SC3 is the most popular but I guess SC1 is popular too,” Odashima tweeted this past week. He revealed that Xiang-Hua was his main character in the original Soulcalibur.

Odashima brought the subject of guest characters in the new Soulcalibur up as well. “My personal opinions on what to expect from guest characters; It’s popular(from any genre), Uses weapons; Matches the SC atmosphere,” he wrote in a separate post.

“There is still a chance that the guest characters people suggest might make it into the game. Whether we will have a guest character at all this time is undecided tho,” he stated before signing off for the day.

  • What does he mean by guest characters? Ive never played an SoulCalibur game.

    • Zonic505

Basically, Link was the guest character for the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur 2, or to be more recent, Darth Vader & Yoda in Soul Calibur 4.

Starting with SCII everyon SC game has had guest characters.

      SCII GC = Link
SCII PS2 = Some Tekken guy
SCII Xbox = Spawn <-Awesome and random.
SCIV PS360 had Darth Vader, Yoga, Starkiller.
      SC PSP = Kratos.

      • SCIII didn’t have a guest character. SCII’s PS2 guest character was Heihachi. Soulcalibur Legends had Lloyd Irving.

        • Guest

Really? I could’ve sworn it did. Thanks for pointing it out. Fixed it.

        • Lloyd Irving? Dude, thats just random though cool!

          • shy_mel

Both Soulcalibur and Tales are in the Namco Bandai family, so it does make some sense. More than the Star Wars characters made to me at least.

        • Actually, SCIII did have 2 guest characters, though you had to make them in Create-a-Soul:

KOS-MOS from Xenosaga, and Gilgamesh from Tower of Druaga (Ki might be in there too, I never checked, but the Blue and Red Crystal Rods are weapons for Cassandra/Sophitia/Sword and Shield style.)

(By that, I mean their outfits and faces were unlockables, though they didn’t have a set fighting style.)

          • Wasnt’ Stahn Aileron in it too?

          • @Jon: I’m not sure, I can dust off my SCIII and check if it’s possible. I feel like there was a sword like Dymlos in one of the styles…

          • SneakyHawk

You could also make Jin(although it doesn’t look as good) in SC3. It had his pants and hairstyle(well, one close to it).

        • Woa cool, Lloyd!…. wait… *can’t picture Lloyd in 3D soulcalibur style*

  • kanpai!!

Guest characters have become part of the series. I’d be highly disappointed if they don’t include them. Everyone complains that they’re broken or dont fit into the universe and the former I can understand but the latter is extremely stupid. None of the guest characters fit. Star Wars got a lot of flack here because they’re western or at least not from Japanese franchise these people enjoy. The Tekken guy doesn’t fit but no one complained.

Anyways I’m excited can’t wait to hear more news on SCV

  • Code

    rar, only if there play styles have successors in future games omo;

  • The solution? Make your own guest characters with the Character Creator. I’ve had Adol Christin and Cless Alvein on my copy of SC4 for as long as I’ve been playing the game :P

    • I did that too, so fun to go through Tower of Lost Souls with Adol and quasi-Chester.

    • I made almost every Fate/Stay Night character in that game. :)

  • I prefere to see Kratos in a game who is potentially already good than as a prostitute in a game like Mortal Kombat to boost sales (be honest dudes , this licence has been more destroyed at each new release since Mortal Kombat 4)

By the way , i’m happy to see this game back on the scene :)

  • PrinceHeir

as much as i like guest characters as long as it is available on both platfroms this times(so i guess pick guest characters that aren’t exclusive in 1 console) it’s all good. the reason i say this is because of tournament play, wouldn’t it be a pain if your main isn’t available on 1 console due to exclusivity?

i would love that the guest characters this time should have play styles that match the series, Spawn is a good addition ^^

  • If there is going to be a Wii version! Just give us Link again, maybe Ganon!

  • Guest

I would rather ask him what’s up with Ivy and other female characters getting bigger and bigger breasts with each new game.

  • The real KOS-MOS with her guns and mech XD she really match the concept of SC D:

  • mikanko

If the include multiple guest characters and/or a create a soul mode option again I really hope there’s an online mode that prohibits them from being selected. Wonky hit boxes that don’t always obey the same rules as the main cast are not a good thing to have if you want your game to be taken seriously as a competitive fighting game.

  • Hours

No guest characters please! I’d rather have the entire real cast back instead.

Hwang & Li Long must be in SCV.

  • As long as guess characters make sense in the world of Soul Calibur, I don’t mind seeing them. Seeing Yoda and Darth Vader made my head shake because they just didn’t belong in the SC universe.
