Make Your Nintendogs + cats Pop Out Onto Your Desk With AR Cards

By Ishaan . January 16, 2011 . 10:28am

Nintendogs + cats is Nintendo’s first-party game of choice to release alongside the Nintendo 3DS when it launches on February 26th in Japan. In addition to adding 3D display and cats to the mix, the game is also compatible with the 3DS’ altered-reality feature. You can read more about this in our impressions from Nintendo World 2011.

Online Japanese retailer, AmiAmi, reveals that Nintendogs + cats is compatible with AR cards — the 3DS itself comes with six of these — that can make your puppy or kitten appear on your desk or in the palm of your hand.

Additionally, during a recent “Iwata Asks” Q&A session, Nintendogs and 3DS developer, Hideki Konno, also revealed that special care has been taken to model the dogs’ eyes in the game this time around. On the Nintendo DS, the dogs’ eyes were depicted using textures, but this time around, they’re built with a polygonal mesh that can move independently.

The development team went a step further with the cats. In bright light, the iris of a cats’ eye closes over the pupil to reduce the amount of light that falls onto their retinas. Konno’s team designed the cats in the game to change eyes in light and dark surroundings as well.

Oh this is gonna be fun, just tell me that the Labrador Retriever is in the game and I will be on this game on day 1, lol. It will be great to actually take pictures of the dogs too I imagine thanks to the power of AR cards, have to get my face in there somehow…er, lol.

I love labs, too. I have a yellow lab, and she’s quite the happy dog <3.

I was just talking about interesting uses of AR with games in a previous article saying how cool it would be to use AR to have a character (or in this case pet) to interact with your own world instead of a pre-built fantasy one. With stuff like this people can further their gaming customization to build a unique and more personal experience. Granted, it's still in the early stages, but it's certainly exciting to think of the possibilities.

Labs were in the original game, so there should be no doubt in the fact that they’ll be in this one. The question is if it’s a version exclusive or not.

Here’s a list of the 20 breeds in the original.

Why? How can you be uninterested in such cute virtual animals?

      • joesz

Don’t get me wrong but I think I saw a little of that idea before.

What’s that I’m trying to say here,is that I’m not going to like everything in 3D for the 3DS.

Nintendogs sucked. Such an overrated game that really had no content. It also sucked that it’s a game you could only play 10 minutes at a time unless you wanted to just pet the dog because after you do the special activities like walk the dog, etc, you have to wait for 30 minutes or an hour.

Was never interested in the first Nintendogs but the addition of cats just might sell me on this. cats>dogs :P

At first glance I thought the headline said “Make Nintendogs and Cats Poop out onto your Desk”.

It’s sort of possible for them to do that now too actually.

Kind of cool that they can pop out onto your palm, but at the end of the day, I’ve never really seen the appeal of Nintendogs. Pretty graphics, but no gameplay.

Finally I can look after cats without sneezing and feeling like crap due to my allergy.
