Aquaplus Preps Two New Strategy RPGs For PS3 (And A Romance Novel Port) [Update]

By Spencer . January 25, 2011 . 7:03pm

imageAquaplus has big plans for PlayStation 3. Famitsu announced sequels for the Tears to Tiara and Utawarerumono series and both are in development for PS3.

Tears to Tiara 2 picks up where the sequel left off with the same world and characters. Fans who played the first game will be pleased with the connections between games. Originally, the Tears to Tiara series was thought of as a trilogy so there is a rough outline for the overarching story. The game has a mix of 2D graphics for story scenes and a 3D map where you can see a character’s head and body during battles.

Also coming to PlayStation 3 is another version of To Heart 2. The romance novel has been upgraded with motion portraits and other features in To Heart 2 DX Plus. This title is slated for release in Japan this summer. Release windows for Utawarerumono 2 and Tears to Tiara 2 was not announced.

Update: Details about Utawarerumono 2 are out and Tatsuki Amazuyu is leading its development. The sequel takes place in the same world, but stars a new protagonist. The lead character begins the game with amnesia.

  • amazing!

  • Darkrise

Utawarerumono 2!!! Dammit I can’t believe we keep missing out on most jrpgs!

  • PrinceHeir

yay more Visual Novel Games and some Shump games coming to the PS3. is this a sign of what’s to come? :D

    • Testsubject909

Made a big-ass wall-o-text… It’ll arrive, sooner or later… Pending acceptance …Sorry in advance for the big read.

  • joesz

    Utawarerumono2???? and for the PS3??

  • Oh wow, awesome, I REALLY hope NISA picks up these games, would love to see them come over. I wants more SRPG goodness and I really like the first Uta

  • Utawarerumono needs to come!!

  • JustaGenericUser

Hmm, another visual novel coming to PS3. That’s interesting. It’s only too bad we probably won’t see it localized due to Sony America and none of the PC To Heart games being translated (as far as I know), so nobody knows about the series.

    • Yukito

Indeed. It is to the point where, they seem to be the only free grab games up in Japan right now. If someone is willing to bring any over, Sony should just let them test the waters. Rorona had elements and did good. Heavy Rain was pretty close to one, and did well. Just throw out a bigger named VN, and see how it is taken. There is a Haruhi Suzumiya game, and an Umineko game out there. Both have quite a bit of fans, that the games could be profitable…especially if advertised at conventions. That is what RPG devs/publishers should do. Start advertising there.

      • kroufonz

well heavy rain are 3d and western so it cannot be compared to those VN

what about mangagamer can they try to spread their wing to console( ibeleve SCEE is more loose than SCEA)?

considering this year PS3 starting to get more VN there is Fortune Arterial, Love once, Haruhi tsuisou, also there is psn release of clannad, yet there is still no one try to localize one of them in this globalization era

        • Yukito

Western and 3D or not, it still is pretty close.

I do agree though, no one tries, but atleast Aksys is showing some interest. I am hoping they do something.

      • Ladius

Yeah, it’s really sad that Ps3X360 visual novels like Steins Gate, 428, Umineko and Chaos Head Noah (at least we have the PC english patch for the first edition) are completely ignored by console publishers (the same could be said for the PSP vn scene, but that would be far too risky in the west since the PSP’s sales are declining).

Sakura Wars 5 and Disgaea Infinite tried to test the market, but apparently they didn’t meet NiSA’s expectations :

        • Yukito

Well, Disgaea has a pretty niche fanbase anyways, so, you would most likely need to be a Disgaea fan, and a VN fan together, to enjoy the game. That is a pretty harsh combination.

        • JustaGenericUser

          >(the same could be said for the PSP vn scene, but that would be far too risky in the west since the PSP’s sales are declining).

Being the most pirated non-PC platform in the west doesn’t help matters, either.

  • Uta-2?

We need another H game in 1080p? Huh.

    • kroufonz

sir there is no h game or eroge on hd console, there is only galge on console!

    • Darkrise

Yeah what kroufonz said. Don’t stereotype because there are restrictions even in japan that forbid H content to be allowed on vn console ports.

    • It only had H-scenes in PC ver., ps2 ver. and anime were H-free

  • HarryHodd

Hmmm interesting. Always up for a good SRPG.

  • Hmmm sooo will any of those games ever come to usa or eu? i hope so!

  • If you would have said that Aquaplus had struck a deal with JastUSA or any other company, NISA or Atlus or just some company that would bring the PS3 port of Tears to Tiara over to the US I would have been overjoyed.

Now I´m just slightly irritated since now there are even more games that I will never get to play untill I sell me soul to devil to aquire the time and knowledge needed to learn the Japanese language.

But greats news. All we need now is someone to translate them and bring them over :p

    • kroufonz

NISA is quite busy with JRPG this year, but maybe atlus can become pioneer since they’re localization project list this year still pretty much empty( i can’t name any), at least for now looks like atlus more focused publishing western.

      • I know they are busty(pun intended) with JRPGs this year. And man what a lineup. At least two games that I´ve been waiting for since their previous titles.

If they find and release even more then I´ll get even more happier.

But with what the content of these games are if you take a look at the earlier games then it is basically only NISA or Atlus that have the guts to release them outside Japan.

And yes I know that the Tears to Tiara game for PS3 is all ages.

We forgot one company that might be able to fetch these titles: Aksys. Since they released Record of Agarest War in a very naughty edition they might claim one of these titles someday.

  • duyxbox

Oh Japanese class , here I come

  • kroufonz

To heart 2 DX?will it include another days?
thanks to namco bandai that will releasing some tales , which save my import budget so maybe i can get this definitive version of to heart 2

( i only get 2 aquaplus game on ps3 ,TtT best version and TtT gaiden and get both below 33$ each (when play asia discounted them))

and wow to aquaplus choose to release both TtT and utawarerumono direct sequel on HD console first, i never see that coming, now if only circus can get their DC III on PS3 too

thanks to region free, god bless PS3!

  • malek86

I think TH2 is getting near the title of most milked VN ever, if it isn’t there already.

Oh well, at least it will be in HD this time.

    • kroufonz

      TH2, TH2Xrated, TH2ad, TH2Portable, TH2DX

that list still not even close to 1st and 2nd most milked VN franchise ever

first is DC II series second is D.C series

  • Oh man, oh man, oh man, utawarerumono 2, oh man

  • Was there really a point in telling us that the main character in Utawarerumono 2 starts out with amnesia when the original does the same thing?
