Cave Bring More Bullet Hell To Xbox 360 With Shin Red Katana

By Ishaan . February 19, 2011 . 8:24am

Back in July of 2010, Cave announced Red Katana, their next major bullet hell shooter. That game is now coming to the Xbox 360 in widescreen format with new stages and a new game system as Shin Red Katana.

Cave announced the game this weekend in Japan at a press conference where they unveiled a bunch of new titles. Red Katana is slated to release on May 26th for 6,800 yen. A limited edition will also be available for 8,800 yen.

  • Region free, for the love of God region free!

If not then I think this’ll be the one that forces me to buy a JP 360, because I’ve been drooling over Akai Katana gameplay on YouTube for a while now.

    • Arcm

I agree it should be region free on 360 the gameplay looks amazing I honestly can’t wait.

  • Awwww….I though it was Touhou :(

    • There’s a time and place for everything. This is about CAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Day one, although my ~15 minutes of arcade playtime left me more puzzled than satisfied.

    • Ew, Touhou…

  • Code

rar, I like the presentation/character designs, but I find something visually weird about the game itself, maybe it’s the perspective?

    • Aoshi00

The background does look a bit weird at first because it’s not sideways like the ship, but I’m glad this is 2D sprite, I was really disappointed they went 3D w/ Deathsmiles 2.. I think your next game should be this :)

      • Code

        Yeahh, I think the background is just perspectively different from the angle of the ships it’s just kind of strange, not bad, but just looks different. Also I ordered DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu the other day during PlayAsia’s sale >w< Decided to opt for the regular edition, Soundtrack would have been nice with LE and I like the box more, but it's not work like nearly $30 that could go into other shmups opo;

  • Aoshi00

Those homing lasers remind of Deathsmiles 2 (or was it in 1 too?). I’m glad this is 2D sprite shmup, the 3D models in Deathsmiles 2 was a big step down compared to the first game I thought.. sometimes I’m a bit sick of vertical so this is more refreshing, and Otomedius looked pretty bad too.. This and Instant Brain both look sick :)

  • SomeMist

Will be preordering this as soon as the preorders go up!

as for people wanting this to be region-free, there’s always a chance but this would seem like a title that Cave would want another publisher to localize.

    It’s never too late to get a J360 :P

    • Never too late, no, but it can be pretty pricey. $250 on top of the $60-80 per import is just too rich for my blood at the moment, regardless of how much I love these games.

Region free would be amazing, but a localization would blow my mind!

      • SomeMist

It sure beats buying the PCBs :P that and you can always sell your current 360 for a j360 since next to none of the U.S. titles are region locked anyways.

        • Code

Deathsmiles is opo; I had gotten a J360 oddly enough just shortly after it came out, ran into five regionally locked games on the 360, nearly back-to-back too, Raiden Fighters Aces which I owned before getting it, Deathsmiles, Nier, Earth Defense Force, and Raiden 4 xpx; MOST games though aren’t regionally locked to the US luckily xpx; And owning a J360 is a really good idea, particularly if your into shmups, although killer expensive.

        • Ha, never thought about just owning a JP 360. Looking at a list here every NA game I own is apparently region free. Might be something to consider, but then I’d just be in the same position the first time a US release happens to be region locked. :P

I’m sure I’ll just end up buying a JP 360 eventually, so it’s not really a big deal. I’d do it in a heartbeat if I knew these games would drop in price like regular domestic releases, but they seem to retain their value incredibly well (both good and bad I suppose).

Boy do I miss the good old days when you could modify your console and import games without being treated like a criminal/worry about being banned from services. D:

      • I think Akai Katana’s localization chances are quite good. If I were you, I’d hold tight before letting it push you to import a J360. The game will be in print for a while.

The first print DLC for AK is just extra voiceovers, so you really won’t be missing anything by picking it up later if things start looking less optimistic.

        • SomeMist

I’d agree that there’s a good chance for localization despite the game having pretty bad feedback in the arcades. The title actually looks beautiful and Akai Katana isn’t too crazy of a name to scare off western consumers.

Personally I didn’t want to wait and see if deathsmiles iix, dodonpachi dai-fukkatsu/black label/daioujou BL, ketsui kizuna jigoku tachi, radirgy noa massive, senko no ronde duo, and shooting love 200x got localizations :X that and being able to play all the U.S. games I was looking to pick up made it an easy choice. Then again, I didn’t own a U.S. 360 b so the J360 before that so it just seemed like a no brainer.

that and akai katana shin was announced as region-locked :X

          • Well, there are only three games on your region-locked list that I care about enough to pay $70-80 for, and I’m pretty sure DFK will eventually be localized.

While no Ketsui is a real drag and Noa Massive would be nice…neither is worth the cost and hassle of importing a console and both games to me. Maybe if Bullet Soul shows no signs of RF/localization, I’ll take the plunge.

          • SomeMist

well then, best of luck to you! hopefully you don’t have to wait 2 years for a localization (if someone does decide to pick DFK or AKS up) like Europe had to with deathsmiles :0

  • I love the game’s artwork, these guys should start making their games for PS3 too…

  • JustaGenericUser

Awesome, another game PS3 owners will never get. Way to go Cave!

  • PrinceHeir

still no PS3 games cave? im disappointed :(

  • Oh wow, this looks a lot like progear.
