Here’s More Of Moon Diver’s Odd Cast

By Ishaan . February 24, 2011 . 11:01am

Square Enix have been revealing more of Moon Diver’s cast on their Downloadable Games Facebook page. Today’s character compilation includes the other two members of the Moon Diver squad (you can find the first two here), as well as two of the villains.

As with the other characters, some of these descriptions are downright bizarre.

Tolby:

moondiver_tolby

Tolby is a 14-year-old boy living in Naples who prevails over the city Mafia. He’s intoxicated by his powers, which grow on a daily basis. Tolby “runs all over Mount Vesuvius and sleeps off his efforts at the top of the cathedral.”

Square Enix say Tolby is obsessed with understanding where his powers come from, and he’s certain he must have them for an important reason. They point out that he sometimes looks innocent “like a little girl” even during battle.

Ourion:

Ourion comes from a strong family, the ancestors of which are thought to turn into spirits that will fight together with the living in the face of humankind’s destruction. He’s ordered to defeat Faust, the Demon King, by the head of his family.

Faust:

Faust is Moon Diver’s primary antagonist. Despite the fact that he’s a kid, he’s known as the “Demon King” and is hellbent on destroying the world. There’s more to his description, but we can’t make head or tail of it from Square’s description of Faust…maybe you’ll have better luck:

“Behind the actions of the protagonist of Goethe’s tragedy “Faust” is the devil known as Mephistopheles. This devil’s appearance is the genesis of all that follows. Yet behind this boy by the same name is no such devilish influence. The utter despair that grips the world has rendered the devil himself mute. The world is stumbling blind, at the mercy of this almighty youth’s every whim.”

Silence:

And finally, we come to Silence, a traitor to the Moon Divers. Silence is — get this — a Californian college student who works part-time while studying at Stanford Faculty of Engineering. By night, however, he’s a master of espionage.

While Silence isn’t with the Moon Divers, whom he left after developing doubts regarding the war against Faust, he isn’t aligned with Faust either. Square Enix say the question of whose side he’s on is one of the game’s mysteries.

Some of those descriptions are hilarious. I’m going to play as Tolby and hopefully Silence can be unlocked later.

It seems like a pointlessly overwrought description, full of poetic incompetence, but here’s what I can make of it:

Basically, Faust from Goethe’s Faust had a devil driving him. This guy doesn’t – he’s running solo, entirely at his own discretion. In fact, he’s so evil, so powerful, that even the devil itself can’t comment on his actions, can’t influence him at all, and the world falters trying to deal just with his desires, his existence.

SE should hire more people like you for those character descriptions, not poet wanabees.

      • Yui

Haha, that makes me feel good. Thanks, man. :D But still, I think that, if this is a direct translation, it’s probably someone at SE trying to make it more profound than it needs to be. Succinct, subtle, straightforward is the style I prefer. It’s one of the main reasons I like the way characters are described in Western media. :D

To be fair, though, who am I to tell SE how to run their own…thingies? XD

That’s pretty much what I gathered too Yui. That and Mephistopheles is the leader who tried to use Faust but it somewhat backfired and now Faust is too damn powerful. Something tells me you’ll end up facing Mephistopheles as the final end boss.

          • Yui

Really? I’m seeing the Mephistopheles comparison purely as a vehicle to drive home the fact that this character is so powerful. I guess that’s the beauty of it, that it can be interpreted both ways. I’m really seeing a more metaphorical comparison between Goethe’s Faust and this guy -”This devil’s appearance is the genesis of all that follows. Yet behind this boy by the same name is no such devilish influence.” is the crux of it, as a figurative ‘Goethe’s Faust had somebody, this guy never did’. You’ll have to explain this to me, man, my interpretation may be faulty and if so, that’s not good for me at all. :D

Ehh? But why would you fight Mephistopheles if Faust is much more powerful?

          • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

Just a simple hunch based on “the main bad guy being revealed not actually being the final boss” that I’ve come across in many games. Mephistopheles can always end up turning the tables in someway.

@Yui. I’m reading into it in a simple manner. So your more likely to be right. My brain was not meant for complex analysis.

Western media is full of poetic nonsense descriptions. I take it you don’t play many Western fantasy rpgs. They are covered in old English and )sometimes) extremely corny poetry.

          • Yui

I’ve played a fair few (not things like Gothic, or The Witcher, though), and they generally seem to be more straightforward. Dragon Age’s descriptions were concise, Morrowind’s were at least easily understood…The Bard’s Tale was written superbly. I don’t know, man, maybe I’m too inexperienced. I remember Neverwinter Nights being a bit overwrought…I guess I need to think of Western games using English as a native language, while this probably makes more sense to a native Japanese speaker. :D

A Californian college student? SIGN ME UP!

I honestly believe that video game character descriptions have never been great because you’re meant to figure them out during the game. They’re only meant to give hints to their personality, but not give everything away. That’s why all JRPG protagonists have justice slathered all over their character profiles, but are all (somewhat) different.

Then again, Moon Diver doesn’t look like it’ll be a game with too much character development – so this might be all we’ve got…

Well this is a fine variety of characters.

    - A Swedish high school boy who just can’t wait to be a hero.
    - A female Squall who probably has a tsundere side. ^^
    - A solemn ninja with androgyny
    - A badass black dood (Yes, I want to believe that.) lol
    - A Californian Ryu Hayabusa.

Yup, this is more than a Day 1 purchase.

    • raymk

Yeah i agree with ya buddy =D. That guy being a Californian college student makes me like him already :). I bet he’ll be a Secret character (though he might be DLC hope not) so until then I call dibs on the female squall(or better version of squall)

…Inanimate objects being used to take over the world, ninjas who are the opposite extreme to the sterotype…a plot that could be more bizzarely written then *gasp* even Alien Soldier?!!!?!

How can I not buy this game…oh and the gameplay looks pretty good as well.

The icon from the article made look like Judas from the Tales series.

Also I LOVE Faust. Well, his art at least. Kinda wish he was the hero….

  • JustaGenericUser

Oh man, these character designs are so out there.

  • capristrider

Silence – the Californian college student, looks super cool, hopefully should be an unlockable character to play. Gonna have to buy another PSN card at discount!
