This Week In Sales: A Gentleman Holds The Door Open For Nintendo 3DS

By Ishaan . March 2, 2011 . 5:11pm

The week of February 21st – 27th saw a flood of new releases, with 16 of the 20 slots on the weekly software sales chart occupied by new games. The most prominent, in the top-ten, were new Nintendo 3DS games, which launched alongside the system on February 26th. We’ll get to these in a moment.

Other Points of Interest:

The #1 game on the software sales chart for the week was Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity by Sega, which debuted at 206,654 units. Infinity is an upgraded version of Phantasy Star Portable 2, which released in Japan last year, and sold 286,896 units.

Meanwhile, Marvelous Entertainment also had new releases for the week in the form of Rune Factory Oceans, a Wii/PS3 title. Oceans’ on the PlayStation 3 sold close to 30,000 units, while the Wii version moved a little over 10,000 units. For reference, Rune Factory 3 on the Nintendo DS sold around the same amount in its first week as both versions of Oceans combined, at 40 – 45,000 units.

Finally, Disgaea 4 also saw its release during the week, and moved close to 80,000 units. For the sake of comparison, Disgaea 3 released in 2008 at 54,596 units sold in its first week.

The Nintendo 3DS Launch:

The 3DS launched in Japan on February 26th, so all figures pertaining to the 3DS in this week’s sales chart only account for the system’s first two days on the market. In its opening weekend, the Nintendo 3DS sold 374,764 units of its initial shipment of 400,000.

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle was the system’s highest-selling launch title by a rather wide margin at 119,591 units. For reference, Professor Layton and the Curious Village debuted on the Nintendo DS well into its life in 2007 at 136,736 units, while the most recent (and last) DS Layton game, Professor Layton and the Specter’s Flute, moved 347,360 units in its own first week in November 2009.

Following Layton at close to 65,000 units were the three versions of Nintendogs + cats, which in turn were followed by Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and Ridge Racer 3D, all three of which were in the week’s top-10 selling games. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D, however, didn’t make it into the top-ten and debuted at #15.

  • Woot woot Disgaea 4!! Over 30K more than D3! I cant wait for NISA to start promoting it! so excited!

Ultimately, looks like PSP games will be able to coexist with the N3DS games based on the top of the charts.

  • d19xx

I hope Infinity continue to sell well in coming weeks. I want a western release for that gem…

    • Ladius

Sega has yet to announce a western release date for Valkyria Chronicles 3, I wouldn’t hold my breath for P2PI.

  • Disgaea did pretty good, and Rune Factory Oceans did an overall of 38k… It’s pretty good, considering all the monsters that were released last week

  • Glad to see Disgaea made the top 5.

  • Aoshi00

Layton is the only title I consider getting a Jpn 3DS for right now, guess it’s similar for many people… w/ 3D puzzles it’s just neat.. and the bobbing heads when people talk :)

  • Give a round of applause to NIS and Disgaea 4– the fact that it was able to get to nearly 80,000 sold in a week like this is an achievement in itself.

  • HarryHodd

Was hoping for more from Disgaea 4, but I guess it’s good enough it beat 3 easily. Nice to see so many PS3 games in the top 20.

    • Greedy much? Over 20K units more than the last entry is surely great for Disgaea

      • Sal

Even better since Nintendogs has 3 versions.

  • RX79V

Very surprised to see Layton being the top selling 3DS title since most unboxing videos showed SSF4 instead.

I was hoping to see better numbers for 3DS titles. Oh well, I guess 340K software for 370K hardware sold is a decent start.
I am interested to see what happens in the next few weeks and if any of the launch titles got any legs.

  • Draparde

Nice numbers for Disgaea 4, can’t wait for it to come out in the US . and i look forwerd to PSP2:i’s being brought over as well, whenever it happens.

and lol @ the list having monster hunter portable 3rd listed as a DS game….

  • Aoshi00

Just a note, in addition to having the worst cover in the series :P, 3DS Layton only has 1 save slot instead of 3 like the last 4 games (some didn’t like it because they can’t play w/ their family..) Some people like the 3D some people don’t and think it got in the way… maybe I shouldn’t import a Jpn 3DS now just for that and wait for Love Plus… Nintendogs + Cats looks cute but not must get for me either..

    • One save slot? That’s kind of weird…especially for a puzzle game like Layton that’s likely to be passed around in the family and played by different people… I wonder why…the usual three slots doesn’t seem like something that would be hard to implement…

      • Aoshi00

I know… I mean it’s not too huge a deal for me since I’m the only one playing it, but it bugged a lot of people since they might want to pass around to play w/ their family.. I just don’t know why all these regression..

    • alundra311

1 save slot for Professor Layton. Man, that sucks. I do hope they give us 3 save slots for the english release. Either way, I’ll still buy it.

      • Aoshi00

I’m still interested in it too, big Layton fan here.. just a bit disappointed by all these regression, sloppy cover (not sure how important this is to others, I guess we have no choice) and down to 1 save slot, many are bugged they can’t share the game w/ their family, just strange.. I’m curious about the 3D puzzles though.. I’m debating if this is worth shelling out big bucks to get a Jpn 3DS at this moment.. I’ve bought both ver of Layton games before, but now it’s region locked :(…

        • alundra311

My girlfriend and I are big Layton fans too and that 1 save slot does kind of bug me since both of us will be playing it. But I usually let her finish the game first, so I guess I could just overwrite her save file. As for the cover, yeah, kind of lazy to me. I can’t read japanese so I won’t be buying japanese games anytime soon so I just hope they do something about the save slot and the cover for the english release.

          [Edited thanks to “the master”]

          • My girlfriend and I*

          • alundra311

Thanks for the correction. I’m so sorry for the terrible mistake “master”.

          • You are not one to talk -_-

          • @WildArms dude called me Sawada-sama thus I can talk since I have impervious mastery of American.

          • Aoshi00

I hope so too, but so far the US Layton (or Phoenix except the first one) covers just followed the Jpn ver exactly since they’re fine and dandy… not sure if they would give us more save slots though, I really hate it when they’re stingy w/ save slots.. not so much sharing w/ others and I could understand w/ cartridge, but I like to make saves before cool cutscenes (Nier and Xenoblade had a whopping 3! at least on 360 Nier lets you make new saves on flash drives..) And Layton unlocks the goodies once you finish the game.. I hope they wouldn’t erase your sound clips or cutscenes on your 2nd playthru…

    • Could you imagine Love Plus with 1 save slot? the Fans will rage… maybe, unless they are all faithful to the girl they chose lol

      • Aoshi00

Nooooooooo!!!!!! Then I would never want to save over Nene-san, or have the heart to erase her, she’s 3D, she she’s so real! *.* lol… But man, stingy save slot is one of my biggest pet peeves.. 3 save slots for Nier and Xenoblade, come on! So many epic cutscenes every time I had such a hard time deciding which to write over.. (at least the 360 ver of Nier lets you save on spare flash drives I made like 15 saves, but Replicant on PS3 only gives 3 on the HDD)…

Weren’t investors expecting Disgaea 4 to more than double Disgaea 3 sales? That’s not looking easy right now. Although investors don’t count that much, but still, I thought the jump to HD and multiplayer would have had more of an effect. Maybe releasing it the same week as the 3DS wasn’t too good an idea.

Also, those Rune Factory numbers are okay, but again, choosing a less busy week could have helped. Killzone 3 also fell from K2.

Overall, whose idea was it to release all these games the same week as the 3DS?

    • What do you mean, you make the debut of Disgaea 4 sound like it sold less than Disgaea 3. Anyway, when else would they release it? If it came next week, then people would still be buying 3DS’s and 3DS games, waiting only means more of the other games are sold.

      • malek86

Not less, but not much more either. NIS said this game was supposed to be their most important release, so I hoped it would do a bit more.

        • Hasnt it already sold at least five times that of their last game they released (in wk 1)?

      • Ladius

Yeah, personally I too don’t understand the negativity regarding D4’s sales (except on some board where hating and downplaying NiS seems a national sport). Not only the first week sales are a big improvement over D3’s, but in a far more crowded week with a new system, many new titles, some other jrpgs and other PS3 titles catered to the same niche (Catherine’s second week and RFO).

Of course in an ideal world I would like D4 to sell 200k, but seeing NiS’s recent string of PSP failures this is the first sales improvement in years, not to mention titles like Disgaea aren’t so high budget as to require bajillions of copies to recover from development costs. I reckon that those 79k are already a good result for NiS.

        • malek86

Ok, the sales are not bad, but I’ll admit, I would have at least hoped for them to match Disgaea 2’s opening week. If they released it in such a busy time, that’s their own fault. They could have waited another two weeks, other companies did so countless times :

Sega purposely postponed Shining Hearts to avoid MHP3 and some other games, and it ended up selling 100k first week. We don’t know if it would have sold the same regardless, but it doesn’t look like a bad idea.

Unlss they absolutely had to release it that day in order to coincide with fiscal year end or something…

  • DlanorKnox

Disgaea 4 numbers look pretty solid. I hope they stay strong over the next through weeks, I want the beautiful HD sprites to pay off for Nippon Ichi!

  • Sal

    Yay for Disgaea 4’s success!

Also, MvC3 is listed as a PSP game….

  • Yeah I was right on the money about Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle. Somewhat huge success for 3DS games though only Professor Layton did big numbers out of the lot.

As a result of the 3DS’ success, it looks like every other game, sans Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity, SD Gundam G Generation World and – to a lesser extent – Disgaea 4 to suffer. Rune Factory Oceans seems to be the most depressing of the ones to see, thoigh Catherine’s sudden slump is also a bit sad.

    • To suffer? What do you mean? Of the 371K people who bought a 3DS…its not like they sapped out the entire purchasing dollars of the established base of PSP, DS, Wii, and PS3 owners. Maybe youre statement would make sense if the Top 5 of the chart was exclusively 3DS games.

      • What I mean is that because of the 3DS, many games lost out on potential sales because Japanese gamers were focused on 3DS games. Are you telling me that games such as The [email protected] 2 and Rune Factory Oceans would have sold the same amount if the 3DS wasn’t released last week?

Next week will be interesting because we will see if the 3DS manages to keep its momentum or if it cools slightly.

        • The games that performed on the chart that debuted that you said were depressing sales had “increased sales” in comparison to their previous entries. Furthermore, I think it is hard to state that the 371K market of 3DS buyers resulted in such a massive loss of buyers from the market that the other games couldnt have achieved the unstated expectations that you seem to have. Maybe it would be alarming if ONLY 3DS games were in the top 10 and all the other games were in the bottom of the charts, but that is not the case.

          • They may have had “increased sales” compared to their previous installments, but they probably would have sold more. Also there “increased sales” were not much.

I can’t state a rough figure but I’m pretty damn sure that if there was no 3DS games available, that other titles would have seen a higher figure then what they acheived in the charts. Not everyone has deep pockets like you do Tsuna and with the 3DS getting more hype then many of the titles, it seemed likely that 3DS titles would be picked over other titles.

As for the examples I listed, well I’m not going to list all the games in the charts that have may or may not (but in my opinion likely) have suffered in potential lost sales due to the launch of the 3DS.

All this arguing has made me hungry.

          • I doubt handhelds owners buying the games available on day 1 for 3DS or a 3DS in general who play Disgaea type games…had an interest in the launch of the 3DS and thus decided to haphazardly buy a 3DS and Nintendogs thereby ignoring Disgaea 4.

Anyway, people can dig a little deeper. Day 1 Sales are not the end all be all for RPG’s or Ocean simulators.

        • Ladius

RFO so far has performed better than Rune Factory Frontier, the biggest disappointment is surely Idolmaster 2 (then again, the fan-rage regarding its new mechanics could explain at least some of the lost sales).

    • Rune Factory Oceans seems to be the most depressing of the ones to see

Not really. Rune Factory Frontier only sold 18k first week, so this is a pretty huge improvement.

      • Ladius

RF Frontier on Wii sold less than 20k on its first week, while RF Oceans has almost surpassed Frontier’s LTD result of 41k. Of course those are low numbers all around, but I don’t think 3DS’s launch particularly damaged them.

    • Ladius

Don’t worry, aside from the big improvement from D3’s sales, D4’s opening is also the second best in the whole series.

Also, investors seem to be pleased with D4’s performance and Nippon Ichi’s share price rose today by 21.27%. The 3rd of February the stock price was 37,500 Y, now it’s 171,000 :)

  • thebanditking

I love the layton games on DS but I got to say at this point I am a little tired of them. I think I am just going to hold out until the Layton X Phoenix Wright games comes out as I think that should offer a fresh mix on the game play.

    • Aoshi00

That’s true, as much as I like the series, after the trilogy it’s like they’re beating on a dead horse by extending w/ yet another trilogy… still like the chars and universe though and I don’t like crossover so much in general..
