The Nintendo 3DS Knows How To Make Fog, It’s Built On A Chip

By Spencer . March 17, 2011 . 12:31pm

dreamt3Dream Trigger 3D, a musical shooter from D3 Publisher, has a level where players float through a foggy forest. Art Co., the developer, didn’t need to make fog from scratch.

When we were discussing the development of Dream Trigger 3D, a representative revealed the 3DS had fog effects built in on a chip. So, if you want to cover a stage with volumetric fog you can use the 3DS’ built in hardware to do so.

Dream Trigger 3D comes out in North America this May. Check out our hands-on impressions for more about the game.

Silent Hill 2 3DS port (I don’t need another new one). First thing I wanted when I read that.

    • Zero_Destiny

I was thinking that it would be epic to have all that fog in a Megaten game. Probably an old-fashion 1st-person one like the Strange Journey. Man thinking about it fog and Megaten would go well together I wonder why it isn’t there more often. :)

      • I think the recent Persona 4 had fog elements in the dungeons(or in the city, can’t remember). And I seem to remember past SMT games had fog here and there too, but don’t count on me, my memory is honestly not really “good”. xd

        • Zero_Destiny

lol I haven’t played P4 yet. :( But I’ll get it soon. It’s at the very top of my list, especially since P3 blew my mind. XD Megaten need MORE fog though. lol I’ve been putting more time into Strange Journey and I love it. It’s insane. The story is ballz to the wallz. Demons, Schwarzwelt, Dudes sitting around in a nice furnished room and giving me the power to summon demons. It’s insane. XD I’m loving the game. Also how many games did you get to play as an American (well games from Japan). It’s so cool. Plus the classic Megaten looking chara designs look nice. I love their suits. There so bizarre and other wordly that I can’t help looking at them. I’m so happy I bought it. Best $20 spent ever. :)

          • The player character is from the JSDF in the Japanese version.

Edit: I suppose it’s supposed be along the lines of “you’re a soldier from your(the player’s) home country’s military” though.

          • Zero_Destiny

Argh! I thought so but seeing how everyone was from so many different countries I wanted to believe he was a yank. lol Oh well in my mind he’ll always be an American who happens to be named Zero_Destiny (well as much of that as I could fit). lol
EDIT: That makes sense :) I love when companies do that. Try to make you relate to your chara (lol but I don’t mean I can’t relate to a Japanese person or anything and companies should change all the charas into Americans). Just nice to have someone represent your nation once in awhile. :D
Commander Gore you were a good man. I will try my best to lead in your stead and get the mission accomplished.

          • Alexisonfire

A major plot point in Persona 4 was about fog.

And Atlus has confirmed that there will be a Persona game of some kind on the 3DS.

            Persona 4 Portable confirmed?

            [/Wild Speculation]

          • Zero_Destiny

No it’ll be PERSONA 2 Eternal Punishment. lol That would upset EVERYONE. >_< heheheheh PERSONA on 3DS seems like a cool thing to me. As long as it isn't another P3 remake I'm up for it. I'm atcually looking forward to Devil Survivor 3DS since I missed the DS version of it.
EDIT: I'll have to get the PS2 version of P4 though since I have P3 FES on the PS2. Collection just wouldn't look right without P4 next that one. All though I'm sure Atlus can sucker me in and make me buy the game twice. :)

          • I kind of doubt it would be P4P, mainly because of P1P and P2P and P3P, after bringing up the remake fanbase on that system, and the opportunity to download the rest on the NGP, it wouldnt make sense to jump platforms.

I imagine it will be an original game…if that game for the 3DS does come to fruition and hasnt been cancelled///

          • AoiKaze

Personally, I DO hope it’s P4P. Since the fog effect is built in, it’ll definitely be a tiny bit easier if they develop the game on the 3DS. Also, the Protagonist and his friends all wore those glasses, which would in a way fit in the whole “3D” type of aesthetic. XD

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I have not played Strange Journey, but SMT games are pretty dark in general, so you might be onto something there.

But for now Silent Hill 2’s fog has got to be the most suffocating, engulfing, oppressive fog-to-end-all fog. The longer you play it, the more it bores into your skull… Of course, the fog is only the beginning.

You should check it out sometime if you can stomach horror games. :)

        • Zero_Destiny

Everyone tells me how great Silent Hill was (I’ve heard bad things about how the recent games are all action and aren’t survival horror games anymore). I know most of the stuff like the fog/sirens, and monster, and the radio sounds, and the cults from other nerds who liked to talk about them. I’m interested in the series and will probably download the first game off of PSN some day. I know it’s old but I like my games like that anyways. XD Strange Journey is awesome. You should check it out and read about it. The story is crazy. My mind’s blown by all the stuff that has happened in it.

          • Ren

From what people told me, play the second Silent Hill first, it’s far better.

          • Zero_Destiny

I’ve heard that too but I don’t think it’s on PSN and don’t mind playing the “inferior” one first. If it is better that would make the transition from 1 to 2 smoother (better than starting at 2 and going to the inferior 1). Plus I like my games old so I wouldn’t mind bad camera/controls so long as it isn’t a game breaker.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I wholeheartedly agree. But 1 is no slouch so I think he’s fine.

          • Don’t worry, I’ve been playing Silent Hill for a long time. First one and the second are great, although the second is indeed more focused on the psychological horror that makes the franchise more unique. But the first one is the real classic. In the 3 and 4 is the point that things got more action focused, although 4 has a very interesting premise with the whole “Room” stuff.

I haven’t finish SH 3 and 4 yet though, just 1 and 2 and the last one released, Shattered Memories. This one excludes action almost completely and make another great game by telling an “alternative reality version” of the first one. I thought SH:SM on par with the best ones as well, in it’s own unique way.

Anyway, I guess what I want to tell is that you won’t regret playing the first one. Although I did like the movie, and I’ve heard of lots of people who haven’t, so my opinion may just be weird (looking foward to see Silent Hill: Revelation in 3D!).

          • Zero_Destiny

@Setsuryuu Thanks sounds cool. I always wanted to play the one where you’re stuck in the room. Sounded like a really cool concept for a game. I never saw the movies though so I can’t make any calls if those are good or bad. I’ll have to check em out soon when I get more money on my PSN.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

That was one of the games I had my eyes on when I *had* a DS. But now… yea. The premise is so intriguing though. It’s like… HP Lovecraft x Jules Verne.

          • Zero_Destiny

Oh it’s crazy and awesome. :) When you recover from your insanity and get a DS again (lol I kid, but maybe when you get a 3DS or something) you should get your hands on it. I love the game so far. Fun, nice graphics, great story. The atmosphere of the game is really what makes it. You’re stuck in that Black Vortex and every moment feels like it. Never dull. You’re just a bunch of weak little humans in a demon world, and it feels like your mission is hopeless. You never get a moments rest, everything is constantly crazy. :D It’s fun.

          • SolidusSnake

You’re in good shape with the first one. It’s one of my all time favorites. If you have access to a 360, I highly recommend Deadly Premonition as well, VERY cool and stylish psychological horror with sandbox elements. Brilliant, eccentric game. And I totally agree with you on Strange Journey, even with all the cool stuff that came out last year it was still probably my favorite.

          • Zero_Destiny

lol I remember people talking about how that game had a really bad localization. Oh Ignition you’ve hadn’t failed me yet (at failing that is). lol From what I’ve seen of it, the game seemed cool. It gave me Dreamcast vibes time of gaming vibes.

          • SolidusSnake

Ah, no way man. The dub fit the game fine, and it was a bajillion times better than what we got in the PS1 or even in much of the PS2 era. In fact I couldn’t imagine playing the game in Japanese, and in 99% of the time I prefer my “exotic entertainment” in the original language.

It’s no Arc Rise Fantasia ;)

          • Zero_Destiny

I atcually played Arc Rise Fantasia with the acting on all the way to the end. The voices started to grow on me. lol Voice work is never my main concern for a game though so it didn’t bother me. Plus I did get some cheap laughs out of it. Not the best translation but I think people should give it more of a chance.

  • Zero_Destiny

Sounds cool. :) I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. Seems like a game that’ll go out of print fast. Better get it soon if it’s good.
