Kadokawa To Publish Catherine Novel In Japan

By Ishaan . March 22, 2011 . 11:03am

Now that Catherine’s out in Japan, it’s time for the merchandise to follow. Kadokawa Games are getting a head start by publishing a Catherine novel this summer.

Judging by the description, the novel, penned by Akira Kawakami, follows the events of the game, but this means that Kadokawa must have had to pick one of the many endings to go with.  We wonder which one it could be…

The Catherine novel is due out on May 20th for 735 yen (that’s around 9$). Note that the image to the right isn’t the actual cover. That hasn’t been revealed yet.

    probably a light novel ^^

please put a holographic front cover that changes from catherine to katherine or a dual cover with Catherine in front while Katherine in back or vice versa :)

oh and if possible put a entirely new ending(i don’t know the ending, but if there’s no ending that Vincent has both Catherine and Katherine in his house, so pick that :P) just so this novel could have some exclusive content :)

  • Almost thought it was publishing here lol. :(

  • Soma

Hmm, here’s hoping that the game is popular enough in NA to warrant this kind of merchandise.
I have noticed more and more light novels making their way to NA these days, so a Catherine novel getting an official English translation is not an impossibility!
    *fingers crossed*

    • Locklear93

Agreed. I’ve been enjoying the light novels I’ve picked up, and would love to see more come stateside.

  • IceRomancer

I would love a Catherine light novel! That’d make a pretty cool preorder bonus too! *hint hint*

    • Soma

Personally, I’m really hoping they include the soundtrack as a pre-order bonus or as part of a limited edition.
Light novel would be pretty sweet, though.

      • IceRomancer

Yeh either one is good with me, both would be pretty epic tho :O

      • idk, if you look at all the other recent Persona & SMT games, they already have the soundtrack, or part of the soundtrack, packaged with it. So, if they’re following that, we’ll be getting something else as a pre-order bonus.

  • Zero_Destiny

Would love to see it get a release in the US. Maybe they can give it a slip-cover so we get a Kat cover and a Cat cover. Sounds like a good idea to me. :)

I heard that in general there are 3 endings for the game…..

Without spoiling too much there’s a True Ending that will surprise because of…. let’s say… “Alignment” :O

    • Aoshi00

Well, there’s bad/normal/true ending for each girl, and normal/true ending for neutral (hope I’m not spoiling anything), so that makes 8, but in general there are 4 really different ones, the other 4 are more like variant..

Wonder if the novel is a retelling of the main game story… there’s really not much to follow up after the endings..

      • puchinri

Judging by the wording of the article, I’d say it does retell the game, but that’s some a good question, I wonder too (and esp. wonder which ending they’ll pick). I guess the endings have good resolution to the story though since you say that~? If so, that’s a relief.

        • Aoshi00

I know.. it sounds like just a summary of the game’s story.. I think it just got “novelized”, I would still collect it of course, I wouldn’t mind reading such a cool story again (but I alrdy know what happen..) I’m getting anything Catherine :).. There were 8 endings, I thought there were all pretty satisfactory (the good ones better than the bad ones of course), the true endings were great :) There weren’t any loose ends really as they got everything covered.. I say the first time go w/ your instinct for the ending you want, I mean mainly there are only 2 routes, you either want Cat or Kat :), for the replays consult a guide, which was what I did :)

          • puchinri

That’s mostly what I thought of it as too. I’m tempted to. I do want anything Catherine (although I gotta consider my finances as it is). x’D

Oh yeah, I remember all that. I just wonder which ending they’ll use for the novel. And when you said there isn’t much to follow up on after, I figured everything was all neat and tied up with no loose ends, so that means the story is done and closed (perfectly, at that). Which is good~.

  • Yes, please.

  • Hope it’ll be good. Adaptations from one medium to another usually ends up being lost in translation.

    • Aoshi00

I know.. and you don’t have the nightmare puzzles to frighten you, they almost made my heart burst on my first playthru.. still I guess being a novel describing how they feel could be cool.. the downside is we all know they story arldy so it’s no fun re-reading it.. compared to say the Gears of War novels where they expand on the game story..

      • Hmm, reading the novel but not experiencing the frightening situation of the nightmare puzzle sounds like one would be missing one of the game’s features :( Well yeah it’s kind of a no-win situation in that case if it’s just a retelling of the game’s story without expanding upon the universe.

I haven’t played Catherine, so I have no idea whether they expanded on the backstory behind Catherine/Katherine, but if they didn’t that might be a good start, just like Fate/Zero or Blazblue Phase 0

  • Aargh. I can speak Japanese pretty well but I’m still at an elementary level for kanji.
