Chrono Trigger Time Warps To Virtual Console Next Month

By Spencer . March 25, 2011 . 3:03am

chronotriggerJapan has a tiny Virtual Console release schedule for April, but it has two Super Nintendo favorites on it. Chrono Trigger, Squaresoft’s time-twisting RPG, is one of them.

Square Enix released a port of Chrono Trigger for Nintendo DS with extra features such as a new ending, a series of Reptite fetch quests, and a new dungeons. While the Wii version does not have those additions, you can pilot the Epoch on your TV if you have a spare 900 Wii Points ($9). Yes, Chrono Trigger is a premium download.

Mega Man X from Capcom is coming to Virtual Console in April too. Harness the power of the Hadouken and the Sting Chameleon’s weapon (again) for just 800 Wii Points ($8). A NeoGeo ROM of King of the Monsters 2 will also be available for 900 Wii Points next month.

While these games have not been announced for North America, Japanese releases that were localized usually pop up on North America’s store a few months down the road.

  • Wii has the best rpg from this era now.

    • Yeah alongside FFVI. The SNES version IMO is the bet best of all three.

I was really disappointed with the added content for the DS versions of Chrono Trigger. I didn’t get through much of it because it seemed to basically consist of really boring dungeons followed by boss fights that were only ‘difficult’ because they had a lot of HP.

I was surprised because the extra dungeons on FF IV through VI on the GBA were so great.

    • Yeah Dragon’s Den was fun.

    • Tokyo Guy

Yes but one of those extra dungeons arguably had the one of the best tracks in the entire game, which had previously gone unheard.

I love the DS version to death pretty much entirely due to the retranslation. It made the game much more playable for me.

      ….Crap. Now I want to play it again… ;_;

  • NoElixirs

I happen to be playing CT again just as this shows up.

  • Mega Man X on Virtual Console?
Been waiting a long time for this day. Guaranteed purchase! :D

    • Zero_Destiny

Well there is the Megman X Collection that has all 6 2-D Megaman X games on it and is on the GameCube, and the Wii is backwards compatible so you can just get that instead and play it on your Wii. BUT The GameCube version of it is atcually kinda expensive since I guess they printed less of them. Still if you want to shell some money it great. Or if you have a PS2 you can get the much cheaper version of it.

      • Just wanna note that the X Collection did not grace Europe and Japan with it’s presence so this release would be the first time these people will get to play it on their Wii.

        • Zero_Destiny

Good point. :) Just trying help out the best I can though. Hopefully someone in America/who can play this version was helped. :D

      • The X Collection is a poor substitute for the original games. The sound is far too quiet, to name one of the bigger problems… I hope to see all three SNES X games up there sooner or later.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

My first MM game ever, you never forget your first :)

  • I never beat this game for some reason.

Unless you’re talking about King of the Monsters 2.

Don’t think you’re off the hook if you’re talking about Mega Man X.

    • When I first played the game even I didn’t want to finish the game because it was awesome but then I realized that it has multiple endings so I decided to finish it once.

  • Testsubject909

Now… How in hell’s name did they NOT have that for download beforehand?

  • You may call $9 a preimum download price but for what your getting that’s pretty much a bargin.

    • Code

      Yeah, really, if someone had told me 5 years ago Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI below $10, I would have probably face palmed opo;

  • Awesome! CT is back and no longer tampered with. I approve.

Now I just need to hear FF3/6 is coming…

  • Tokyo Guy

This is somewhat of a surprise given that the DS game is still avalible. It would be tantamount to Nintendo releasing a Virtual Console version of Mario All-Stars…
then again perhaps SE recognizes that people want to play this on a large screen instead.

Though it takes me back to around 2000 or so, when there was the trademark filed for Chrono Break, and those altered character designs for Chrono (if anyone even remembers this) that appeared to indicate a remake of CT was in the works. Of course the end result was just a PSOne port.

As I posted in another topic, I fail to understand why SE can’t make a new CT game. If Atlus can pull off Radiant Historia with none of the CT team, then there is absolutely no excuse why SE can’t put forth something either.

    • GVmanX

That port was terrible. All those load tomes before battles… O_O

Although, it did give us that gorgeous anime openIng sequence…
