Idea Factory To Look Into Nintendo 3DS And NGP Possibilities

By Ishaan . April 8, 2011 . 2:37pm

Inside Games have a lengthy interview with a group Idea Factory and CRI staff, and Japanese blog, Hachimaki, picked up on a couple of the interesting points of their talk.

One is that Idea Factory are going to be looking into what can be achieved on the Nintendo 3DS and NGP hardware, since both platforms are out this year (that’s a “maybe” in the case of NGP). This shouldn’t come as a surprise in the least.

The other pertains to how Idea Factory plan to approach development for Japanese and overseas gamers. As you might be aware, Idea Factory dabble in a fair amount of otome games, which are games targeted specifically at women. Hakuouki is one such series of games.

For the domestic market, Idea Factory plan to continue focusing on these titles. For their male-oriented games on PlayStation 3, however, they say they’re going to be taking the overseas market into account.

If you haven’t heard of them, CRI are a company that provide a variety of middleware solutions for game development, and Idea Factory rely on their products for development of some of their own titles.

One example of a CRI product is File Magic Pro (which reduces PSP load times), but they also provide development tools and video codecs like Sofdec, which you’ve probably seen a logo of in several games. You can find a list of games that use their various solutions on their website.

Seeing as the launch window and the first year of release tend to be porting season, why not consider improving some of your earlier games, IF? Look at the complaints you’ve received so far, and work out the kinks, then re-release them on entirely new platforms. That way, you’ll have a product you’re familiar with to work with, and it’ll give you an easy foundation for learning and understanding the new consoles and later ventures. Say, Cross Edge or Hyperdimension Neptunia?

Also, I’d like to see some of Idea Factory’s games improved, but that’s just me. =D

More like Not So Great Idea Factory amirite?

      • Yui

I think my personal favourite is Idea Hacktory, but that one’s pretty good too. Let’s not start this discussion though. :P

You make some great points. I never played Cross Edge and don’t plan on ever picking it up because I don’t wanna play SRPGs on a console. If they fix whatever issues the game had and release it on 3DS/NGP I’d greatly consider picking it up.

      • I feel the polar opposite of the way you do. I wouldn’t ever want to play one on a portable. To each their own, I guess.

      • Yui

Frankly, I’m sick to death of SRPGs in general, but I’d at least like to see IF fix their previous mistakes. They carry on the way they’re going now, they’ll die, and I don’t want to see that happen. =(

      • raymk

Cross edge isn’t a srpg though :(. I mean really its not so if your not bothered by the sprites please do pick up a copy.

Yui, I mean, Eridan, it’s you!(there’s a broken br tag on your disqus profile)

      • Yui

So there is! I thought I’d dealt with that. I’ll have to fix it some time. =D
(also yes its me its alwways me)

  • I saw that today on andriasang together with the game “My Wife”….I want that game sooo badly~ <3

    • Ren

Me too. I kinda wonder what Name they would give my wife if they brought it over.

      • Wow, I don’t even want to think about that…grr. xD Though I wouldn’t matter as long as it sees a localization at all!

  • HarryHodd

So if they are going to take the overseas market into account thier sales must be good here.

    • Skua

Maybe, but it’s also possible that (like many Japanese publishers and developers) they’re gradually losing confidence in the Japanese market, which makes western appeal more important.

      • I just hope that “taking the overseas market into account” means a closer working relation with our publishers and translation teams, and not focusing on genres that are popular around here.

        • I doubt it. It’s just not in their DNA, judging by Idea Factory’s games.

  • Ereek

I take it they’re not interested in expanding their otome market as well?

    • puchinri

Initially, the wording on the front page made me frown, then I read this and felt okay. But now I’m thinking about that wording again and feeling sorely disappointed.

  • RablaAndrews

    Neptunia 2 on 3DS, c’mon!

  • PrinceHeir

My Wife game looks awesome :D

more visual novel games please Idea Factory :P

  • puchinri

    Can’t they focus on the female audience domestically and overseas? ;u;

    • Yes, this! They should team up with Aksys and make a number of PSP owners very happy with English translations of Otomate games. :D

      • puchinri

That would be so awesome! I hope they do it some time~! (Some time soon preferrably x’D.)

  • My Wife. Make it here with a Ps3 port! and more fanservice + moe? Im in.

  • Kai2591

As long as they make good games, I’ll buy.
