Guardian Heroes Hits Xbox 360 With Online Co-Op And Remastered Graphics

By Spencer . May 5, 2011 . 5:34am

GuardianHeroeslogo Treasure’s action RPG meets beat ‘em up Guardian Heroes is coming to Xbox 360 this fall as an Xbox Live Arcade download. Originally released for the Sega Saturn, Guardian Heroes follows five heroes as they punch their way through the Sky Spirits. Guardian Heroes stood out since characters earned experience points for pummeling enemies and there were branching story paths. If you haven’t heard of Guardian Heroes before check out this video of the Sega Saturn version.

The Xbox Live Arcade release is a remastered version of Guardian Heroes with new high-definition graphics and battle effects. Sega also added online play, cooperative and competitive. Pick versus mode and you can join a brawl with up to 12 players. Guardian Heroes for Xbox 360 also has a time attack mode, arcade mode and an arrange mode.

Why did Sega select Guardian Heroes as a game to remaster? “Ever since we began to make Sega’s classic Dreamcast and the Mega Drive titles available for modern systems, the fan response has been overwhelming – and the demand for their favorite games has been pouring in,” said Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at Sega. “Players have been clamoring for this treasured favorite from the Saturn days, and we cannot wait to show them what we have got for them.”

Anyone want to join us in clamoring for Panzer Dragoon Saga then?

Oh man, I’ve got a friend that will be excited to hear this.

  • mwatcher

    WOW!!!!! good going, sega!!!

  • z_merquise

Man, and I’m just watching the gameplay video in Youtube earlier and made me wish that I had a Saturn. And now, they announced this ONLY for the XBox 360. Sigh.

Yeah, I know, the same old “it should also be in that system” comment but dammit I really wanted to play this game for a long time. Is there a way I can convince them to include it in PSN?

    EDIT (Thank you, Edit button):
Okay, time to cool down. I was just thinking a lot of stuff then this news came in. I should be excited when I read “Guardian Heroes” and “remastered graphics” put together then I noticed “XBox 360″, a console I don’t have. Guess you can’t have everything, aye?

      Treasure <3 360

Seriously, seems like they're porting over their entire library to XBLA. Hope we also get Mischief Makers and Gradius V

      • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Nintendo picked up Mischief Makers back then, they probably would want to re-release it one day themselves.
Gradius V will probably get a port sooner or later given it is part of a popular Konami series.

I’d like to see Silhouette Mirage and only if they fix it up, I”ll double dip Stretch Panic.

      • Zonic505

Heck, I’d rebuy Mischief Makers if it was re-released on the Virtual Console.

      • Guest

except the Yu Yu Hakusho Sega Genesis game…

        • Aoshi00

I still have that game.. it would benefit so much from online or local co-op w/ 4 player since the Genesis/Mega Drive only had two controllers..

But this is great news.. I’m sure they noticed a lot of people bought Gunstar Heroes on XBLA too.. I would rebuy any games I had for the Saturn..

      • http://whatistheexcel.com/ Excel-2012

I just want a new Gradius already. Otomedius can only get you so far.

        • Exkaiser

I would be all over a Gradius VI.

          • http://whatistheexcel.com/ Excel-2012

One was announced ages ago for the PS3 but nothing ever came of it.

  • http://twitter.com/moltensea molten sea

Who’s working on this? Treasure (i hope) ?

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Wow so Saturn is getting more re-releases. I’ve heard horror stories about most of Sega’s games on the Saturn with a lost of source code and other stuff when re-releasing Sat games (yes Saga is apparently one of them)
Before this game most thought all we would get is the games with Arcade/PC versions. =P

Whatever the case may be, whatever resources they are using for GH I hope they consider picking up whatever else they can.

That’s almost enough for me to drop money for a 360.

    Almost.

  • Zonic505

1st Radiant Silvergun & Bangai-O, & now Guardian Heroes?! This is awesome! Keep them coming, Treasure!

Now, in addition to Panzer Dragoon Saga, can we also have Burning Rangers & Nights into Dreams on XBLA/PSN?

    • RupanIII

Seconded. Also, that excellent Burning Rangers song is stuck in my head now haha Burning Rangers! We’re gonna make it all right!

  • http://denpanosekai.blogspot.com denpanosekai

    BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.yazuka.net Yazuka

I’m not too familiar with Treasure. But they did Mischief Makers also right? I think the art style of this game looks like MM art style.

  • superdry

Awesome news. I’ve been waiting for the day for this announcement ever since Raidant Silvergun got announced for XBLA.

I’ve sunk countless hours into the Saturn version and I never even unlocked all the endings!

    • Guest

I would type the usual ‘what about PSN’ but since it’s been down for like forever well who knows…

      • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

You do realize Sony said they’d start rolling out its online services again starting this week?

  • Aiddon

want want want want. Now get started on a re-release for Panzer Dragoon

    • mikanko

PDZ getting an XBLA port would make me the happiest of pandas.

      • Aiddon

yes, it would make a lot of people happy pandas

Guardian Heroes is one of my favorite games of all time. The news of this made my day a lot better.

  • http://honorless.net honorless

Wow. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this game over the years but this is the first video I’ve looked at, and I have to say it looks agonizingly slow. Not just the moves or framerate, but the pacing. Three minutes in one room slicing up the same braindead fodder enemies? Yikes.

…Am I missing something? Or is it just that people find the fantasy anime setting and other RPG/story elements extremely appealing?

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I think it’s all the hopping that makes me go “Hmm…”, but I’m still excited to see what it’s about it when it’s released.
Sega reaching back to the Saturn is cool in itself, so here’s hoping to more.

    • http://twitter.com/AaqibRawat Aaqib Rawat

dude you have to experince this game first hand.

I screamed my lungs out when i heard about this.

      Sorry sony :}

although i am jealous they got Silhoutte mirage

      • http://honorless.net honorless

I’ll definitely give the demo a chance, but I have a feeling it’s just going to make me want to play TMNT IV or a Streets of Rage game instead. I’m unwilling to pay for XBL Gold so I can’t do online co-op anyway :/

Yeah, a Silhouette Mirage remake (without Working Designs’ gameplay changes) would be AWESOME. I don’t think it’ll happen, but I’m hoping it does…

  • mikanko

This is pretty much one of my all time favorite games, and probably my favorite treasure game. I wouldn’t even claim it’s the best, but I have the fondest memories playing through this with friends than any other of the Streets of Rage’esque genre, and the alternate paths in this gave it a ton of replayability. I hope they allow a filter off option, because even though it’ll be a pixelated mess, it’s a pixelated mess I’m in love with.

Also, GGPO or similar rollback netcode would make me really really happy, but I kinda doubt it’ll happen. Nicole and her barrier and ability to heal herself is totally S++ tier.

  • eilegz

psn? ok i know its down but stil…

  • Guest

    Amazing news!!!!

  • mikanko

I really really really hope they allow the controls to be mapped because I have a PS2 Saturn pad going through a Korean xconverter on my 360, and I damn well hope I can use it without hiccups. >__<

  • cmurph666

    No PSN~?

    :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/Psyvariar Casey McMahon

I stood up and shouted the second I read the news. Just saved me about $100 bucks on the Saturn version!

  • http://pto.yetikitn.com MelodyKitn

A reason for me to purchase an Xbox (that works without much hassle)! Now if they do Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon I’ll be that much closer to heaven.

  • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

No sentence can express my excitement at this news and seieng the sentence “Pick versus mode and you can join a brawl with up to 12 players. Guardian Heroes for Xbox 360″ just makes it even more sweet.

  • http://twitter.com/EdgeKun Ed Powell

I’d always heard a lot of praise spoken for this title, but never had any idea what it was like or about. Very cool to see it getting brought to a modern platform! :D

Also, while I would love for PS3 peeps to get this too (What? Exclusives suck!), I don’t think it’s in the cards. = Ikaruga, Bangai-O, Silvergun, and now this all show Treasure’s massive love for 360. Good news for 360 owners, but does suck for the rest of the gaming demographic. =(

  • raymk

Damn this is a dream come true, Now all I have to get is my xbox live gold account back and i’m set.

  • http://otoboku.se manga

No news about a PS3 version being made? Since I don´t really like the X0 controll for this kind of game.

And hell yes I´m with you Siliconera if you want to barge in on Sega for a Panzer Dragoon Saga remake. I want to play the RPG title of the series.

  • Megurine

Like this coment if you played the original version and just can’t wait until play it one more time!

  • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

This is good news to anyone who didn’t grow up in the Saturn era; I hope @SEGA:twitter would also bring over #SakuraTaisen to XBLA/Nintendo DL Systems, for its 15th Anniversary, this upcoming September.

  • http://twitter.com/mniscariot mniscariot

Give us all 3 parts of Shining Force III remastered and we’ll be happy.
