Development Has Already Started On The Next Ys game

Falcom continues to grow the Legend of Heroes series with PSP releases. A new line linked to the Trails in the Sky trilogy began in Japan with Trails of Zero last year. A PSP sequel, Trails of Blue, is scheduled to come out on September 29.

Not counting PSP ports like The Oath in Felghana, Ys vs. Trails in the Sky would be the last game with Adol from Falcom, but Ys Seven was the game in the series. Falcom release it in 2009 and Xseed localized the title last year. Curious about what’s next for the Ys series, I asked Toshihiro Kondo, President of Nihon Falcom, about future plans for Ys.

"We’ve already decided on the hardware for the next Ys game, and development has already begun," Kondo answered. "I can’t give out any details just yet, however, but I do think people will be surprised when they learn what it is."

In addition to developing for PSP and PC, Falcom confirmed they are working with Sony’s Next Generation Portable (codename NGP) too. Falcom is also tinkering with Android. Sorcerian, one of their classic PC games, is being updated for smartphones.

  • Ys Eight for launch window NGP.  Xseed proudly picks it up shortly after Japanse release.

  • Be still my heart

I wonder what this one will be like.  I hope it brings back some of the platforming from Ark, Origin and Oath.

Maybe it’s the much-needed Mask of the Sun/Lost Kefin: City of Sand remake?

  • Ryos

Could it be that Ys is going to be heading to the PS3 or one of the other consoles?  Oh man, that’d be sweet.  But since it’s Ys, they could throw it on anything and it’d be awesome!

    • That would be a a dream come true. I’d love to see Ys on a PS3.

  • d19xx

I hope they used the same gameplay mechanic of Ys Seven, minus the party or at least make them optional.

    • The party WAS the mechanics of Ys Seven.  Seven made a lot of sacrifices in terms of level design and difficulty compared to other recent Ys titles, but these sacrifices were the result of the game being perfectly tailored to the 3 character system.  Unless they made another Oath-style game, there’d be nothing left to see if that was taken out.

      • d19xx

Seven had autofacing/targetting system, isometric camera angel, parry and weapon skills. Those were the meat of the gameplay. The party was to diversify your attack and add some strategy.

        • “The party was to diversify your attack and add some strategy.”

Quite right. And without that diversity and strategy, the rest of the things you listed would be kind of meaningless. ;)

Whatever they do, though, I’m sure it’s going to be awesome. It always is!

          • d19xx

You’re just changing characters to change weapons. Otherwise they don’t offer much in terms of combat. If Adol can change weapons on the fly, then there’s no point in swapping characters.

          • FireCouch

Except having party members run around with you is awesome.

          • Well, yeah, that IS true. And I’d be fine with that, as well.

I just thought you meant eliminate that part of the battle system altogether. And that would be significantly less awesome!

  • Not that huge a surprise, but still great to hear. Come on, PC revival for Ys! I know you want to do it Falcom!

    • HarryHodd

Can the PC iterations be played in English?

      •  They can’t be *purchased* in English currently. There’s a fan translation patch for Oath in Felghana PC (which served as the basis for XSEED’s PSP Oath), with one being worked on off and on for Ys Origin. If you try to use those, though, you really should buy the Japanese PC version. XSEED has said in the past they’d like to bring the PC versions over too, though.

    • Much as I hate to say it, Falcom’s not going to be doing PC products any time soon. While piracy had some effect on their PC-side sales, the loss of their agreement with SoftBank is the real killer. SoftBank does the distribution for pretty much all PC software in Japan– they’ve got a pretty authoritative monopoly on that. Since boxed sales is still #1 (Steam’s not terribly popular in Japan right now, and Falcom always puts out *wonderful* premium box sets) they basically have had to kill off the PC-side development.

This is why they’ve been focusing on PSP so much lately. Their recent discussions with NIS have led to speculation of the possibility they may go PS3 (Both NIS and Falcom have been tight lipped on what they’ve been plotting), though they’re definitely on the launch title list for NGP.

So, for now, give up on PC stuff from Falcom. Sorry.

I know I want them to do it. Man, I wish they would go back to PC platform and have them localized and ported to other platforms.

  •  I have Ys Seven for psp I haven’t finished though..

  • Peytral

I doubt it’ll be Ys VIII, considering that it’ll apparently be a ‘surprise.’ Hopefully an Ys IV/V remake?

    • KyoyaHibari

Heard IV wasn’t that great, I can see where you’re coming from though, V might be pretty good, still hoping for an NGP or PS3 Ys 8

  • PurpleDoom

Whatever it is, I’m looking forward to it!

  •  I do think people will be surprised when they learn what it is

    Introducing iYsTwitDroidBook CasuSocial Edition!!!

BRB writing my last will, testament and suicide note.

  • HarryHodd

Prays for home console release. Not getting my hopes up but I’d love to see it.

  • YS VIII for psp please!!!

  • YS game in HD console? Uhh, i don’t know how to react, i rather have them do it in another handheld console like NPG

    • PurpleDoom

My guess is that this is their NGP game.

  •  If this game is on the 3DS or the NGP, it’ll be worth owning the system. I love love love Ys.

  • “we will be surprised at what console it will come too” how many bets on 3DS? these statements always means the most expected system

  • mikanko

If it’s not Ys VIII I hope it’s a remake of Dawn of Ys, still my favorite soundtrack in the series.

  • Bring it on. After playing through Seven, TOiF, and I&II, this is probably my favorite long running series. An Ys 4 or 5 remake, or 8, whatever it may be, my body will be ready.

  • Lordphantomhive

Hm sounds like this one could be interesting. Can’t wait!^_^

  • Ravage27

Well this pretty much confirms it for NGP. Though it would be REALLY surprising if it was announced for PS3 :D

    • Lordphantomhive

      Or maybe… the 360.:o
      Now that would be surprising!:P

  • Ys Eight for PC and NGP. Falcom collaborates with XSEED for a simultaneous international release via Steam. Calling it now.

    •  Definitely not going to be PC. Look at my response to SpaceDrake for why.

  • KyoyaHibari

Mostly just hoping for a longer story than all of the YS games to date lots of sidequests, better friendly AI, deeper spells & techniques and more characters I suppose. Im just starting to get into Ys, shuffling between 3 & 7, but I love both games the way they are pretty much, OOO and a new multiplayer coop with 4 people and create a character feature would be amazing!
