Ishaan’s note: This column usually goes up on Wednesdays, but had to be pushed back due to E3. Apologies for the delay; regular schedule will resume next week.

Last week saw the release of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D – find our recent playtest here — providing the Nintendo 3DS with another slight boost of about 3,000 units as compared to the week prior. The Mercenaries 3D held the top spot in the software sales chart at nearly 59,000 units, followed by One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP.

5pb’s all-gals fighter, Phantom Breaker, also made its debut during the week at 9,960 units, while several of the more popular usual contenders in the software chart (such as Pokémon and Monster Hunter) rose up in position due to it being a relatively slow week with few new releases.

Gotta admit that Phantom Breaker did twice the sales I expected :O.
Almost 2x as much as Bullet Soul, not that their budgets were close…?

    • malek86

Yeah, I was expecting lower numbers for PB. Maybe the Steins Gate anime helped.

By the way, the 3DS seems to be getting a bit better.

      • d19xx

        Well there’s practically no competition.

Nope it’s finally getting games people want. Also those games have content people want. A co op Resident Evil, and One Piece game that covers the war!

  • d19xx

Looks like even Japan has a shortage of new PSP titles. :(

  • PrinceHeir

why didn’t they just used the movement and gameplay style of mercenaries 3D for Operation Raccoon City?

i mean it literally looks like Socom Confrontation, sound effects, movement, aiming.

    need more 3DS games :(

It’s almost certainly because one of the biggest complaints about Resident Evil in general of late has been the tank-like controls and the inability to move and shoot at the same time, which is understandable, since the mainline REs are more action-oriented now. I can’t really argue with that notion either — playing RE4 and 5 on a Wii Remote, Mouse/Keyboard or PS Move feels great, but it’s harder to come to terms with on a traditional gamepad.

Mercs 3D was developed sort of like an “experiment” to get a feel for the 3DS prior to Revelations, which is supposed to be the older, scarier style of Resident Evil. That’s why they both control like RE4/5, but with the ability to move and shoot within certain limits.

      • PrinceHeir

hmm agree but 3D Mercenaries seems to be a huge step in terms of movement and aiming.

plus they have perks so i don’t know :

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I don’t think things like having perks makes it a bad game though. Like, I feel like Mercs 3D could have perks and people wouldn’t give it a second thought. It already has a skill/customization system. Raccoon City’s just getting hate because it’s a more traditional third-person shooter. :p

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional isn’t it a DS game? didn’t know there was a 3DS version. anyway next week is gonna be huge thanks to yakuza finally releasing in japan..

    • BelmontHeir

I’m pretty sure that’s a typo and it’s a DS game, cause it’s gonna be one of the last DS games S-E is bringing over to the US.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Whoops, fixed! Thanks for that. :)

It’s sad that no one is paying attention to Treasure Report:(

    • BelmontHeir

You know, the art style seems more Western so…you never know, it might end up doing better over here.
