More About Project Gravity’s Combat System And Kat’s Kicks

By Spencer . June 13, 2011 . 4:09pm

The E3 demo for Project Gravity (working title), a PlayStation Vita launch window title from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, was focused on world shifting and gravity bending. There was a taste of combat at the end and I was curious to find out how the full game would implement Kat’s kicks.

"As you go through the game you will gain more combat abilities. Some of them are going to add to your basic stock combo, mostly kick driven. Kat’s a kicker," Nicolo Accordino, Associate Project Manager at Sony Computer Entertainment America, explained. "A lot of them are going to be gravity based. We want a lot of the attacks you see to be based on the fact that she can manipulate her gravity and the gravity kind of immediately around her."

"This isn’t trying to be Devil May Cry. It’s not trying to be Bayonetta. We’re not trying to overwhelm you with a bunch of enemies at once. What we’re really trying to do is give people a more accessible way to play an action oriented game."

Project Gravity uses standard controls, similar to a PS3 game, aside from touch screen page turning during the comic book style cutscenes. The development team is considering how to use the reader touch panel and still tweaking the controls. Accordino explained one of the ideas on the table, "When you are falling towards enemies people have a tough time deciding where to go. Maybe an idea where be to touch where you want to go on the touch screen. That’s something the designers are thinking about. Whether that happens or not – don’t know."

Project Gravity is slated to be a “launch window” title for PlayStation Vita.

  • “Kat’s Kicks”… Kat… Kick… Kit Kat…

I don’t know where I’m going with this.

  • SerendipityX

This looks like a great launch title.

  • You know what, upon closer inspection of that screen shot, the art style reminds me of El Shaddai.

  • Croix

Confirmed for launch title? Confirmed for purchase!

    • Apologies that should read “launch window” like all PlayStation Vita games.

      • Testsubject909

That’s good enough for me, personally saying.

      • Croix

Close enough. Stylish games really grab my attention, though, and this one is really looking like it won’t disappoint. Thanks for the attentive coverage.

        • Glad you like the coverage…. believe it or not there’s more on Project Gravity from us ;)

  • Yu_TheKing

Can’t wait to see some Kat-Kicking Act

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Comic style cutscenes? With such pretty graphics? What a waste.

I would love it if combat could be built around the concept of free 360º movement on open environments, with the ability to control gravity on specific places/enemies. That would be much better than just having an On/Off switch. Lots of gameplay possibilities.

WELL IM SOLD DAAAAYY 1 BUY (goes to preorder)

  • Launch title? Beautiful

    • z_merquise

That’s what I’m also thinking but as what Spencer said here in the comments section that this game is listed in the “launch window” of PSV games so it still wasn’t confirmed.

Launch title or not, this game is one of the reason why I’m more interested in PSV than 3DS. The other one was Dragon’s Crown but since it’s available in PS3, I think I’ll get the console version.

Oh and your avatar, is that Saeko Busujima from High School of the Dead?

      • Testsubject909

The idea here is for continuous play from PS3 to PSV.

You could also view it as another way of pushing for digital download. If, for example, you could connect your PSV to your PS3 with the same account on PSN and from there download Dragon’s Crown both on your PS3 and PSV. You really wouldn’t have a reason NOT to do so and enable yourself the ability to play both in the comfort of your own home with a large TV or on the go with a smaller screen.

      • I would have to agree with you! I am entirely excited for Dragon’s Crown! Amazon has it listed for 29.99 on the PS3 but that may change. Also, yess it is :D
I love Saeko soooo much <3

“Project Gravity uses standard controls, similar to a PS3 game”

That’s what I wanted to hear.

  • Two games coming out soon with unusual art styles.

  • AzureNova

This is what I’ve been waiting for, PSV now being pre-ordered.

    • Testsubject909

      That and many other titles.

Basically, I agree with you well enough person with a huge breasted character in the icon person.

      • AzureNova

        lolz ^_^

    • kupomogli

      +1 for the awesome avatar.

      • AzureNova

        Thanks ^_^

  • Launch Title?! I’m sold!

  • Cell shading!? Yes, please! We need more of that!

  • I really like the colour palette of this game. It’s all cell-shaded-ly swirly. I think Gravity Daze would have described it quite well.

  • This game right here is what I would define a reason to buy a playstation Vita. I really feel like this is what its about. Direction visual orgasmic sensation. Bye Bye PsP 3000, you’ll be missed. Welcome home Vita. Mommy’s loves you!
