NIS America President On Vita Support And HD Remakes

By Spencer . June 24, 2011 . 6:25pm

snomad With remastered games for PlayStation 3 gaining steam and since so many readers inquired about HD remakes I asked NIS America’s president Haru Akenaga what he thought about the idea.

"Our games use dot graphics and are impossible to remake in HD. We would need to redraw the graphics again. In that case, it is not easy work to do HD remakes. We’re going to think about other ways to reproduce our titles," Akenaga answered.

"Perhaps, you can work on this idea for [PlayStation] Vita," I said.

"Hmm… good point," Akenaga said with a smile. "Actually, we already announced there are some titles in development for Vita. This news was released in Japan." Yep, it was part of Nippon Ichi’s most recent earnings report, which says new titles for Next Generation Portable and Nintendo 3DS are in development. So far, NIS America and their parent company have not announced any specific games.

We’ll have more news about NIS America, including discussion about their Imageepoch project, on Siliconera next week.

I would pay full price for an HD remake of Soul Nomad and the World Eaters.

Also I would like a fleshed-out version of Makai Kingdom for the Vita. That’d be pretty cool.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Justin-Snow/1413496407 Justin Snow

A thousand times yes! Especially for Makai Kingdom!

      • Locklear93

Yeah.  Outside of La Pucelle, Makai Kingdom is the one I most want more of.  I never really did understand why Phantom Brave has had two re-releases, in relatively close proximity to each other, while poor, entertaining Pram languishes as a temperamental post-game character. :(

    • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

I’d be happy for just a simple PSP port of Soul Nomad. I loved that game so much.

      • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

I would be happy just for that too, but Soul Nomad just feels like such a large game in the scope of it’s story– having a remake that gives HD sprites, detail to the game maps instead of having things be so flat, and even more options for leveling more efficiently (like being able to revisit older maps) would be pretty cool. We already have Demon Path for a alternate mode, but perhaps we could have a mode that focuses on other characters? (Odie? Layna? Perhaps what the heck Gig kept doing while you were knocked out in Demon Path!? Or maybe even Endorph-focus and more tie-in into Phantom Brave!)

Soul Nomad hasn’t been touched, like Makai Kingdom, so they both have a ridiculous amount of potential to be expanded upon, in terms of gameplay and in characters and story.

      • Ladius

This would be really great, that game deserves more appreciation :D

    • SolidusSnake

Soul Nomad 2 would be awesome

Disgaea HD for Vita and Disgaea 3D for 3DS confirmed? : P

    • http://www.facebook.com/CalientePhoenix Phoenix Caliente

Well we already know what one of those 3DS titles is. I dont think there was much success for Disgaea on DS though, so perhaps Disgaea just for Vita?

    • Lord Highawesomeparty

The port of Disgaea on DS was horrible compared to the PSP one, also PlayStation gamers are more familiar with the series than Nintendo gamers so I’d assume NIS would be hesitant on bringing another Disgaea game to a Nintedo platform.

NIS is very close with Sony so I’d doubt they’d let their cash cow go over to Nintendo where they are relatively unknown.

  • HarryHodd

Will buy any RPG they bring to the PS3.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

About dot graphics I think I know what it is but I want to make sure. Does King of Fighters XII and XIII use dot graphics as compared to other fighters? I’m sorry I’m not sure what examples to use… (I was going to ask about BlazBlue but I’m not so sure it uses dot graphics.)
    Thanks

  • kroufonz

i am pleased as long as nisa keep bring us PS3 Jrpg

  • shion16

I think we all agree that we had already enough Disgaea 1 versions

  • http://twitter.com/ZonronSekai Zonron

i had a really bad day… this made me a little happier.

  • Rihawf

A mega-vita-pack with all NISA games! >_> I can dream too.

  • shy_mel

If they have to do that much work to remaster the games, they’re better off making new games.

    • http://www.themogblog.com/ Edward Walton

You’d think for a sprite based game they could just reuse sprites and make another. That’s pretty much how all the games felt. Reused sprites and reused weapons thrown on top of a different world. I cant understand how they wouldn’t be able to use the new sprites to build the previous games in the same engine. >.> I mean, look at Disgaea 2 for PSP. They carried over stuff from Disgaea 3 for that one.

      • Lord Highawesomeparty

Like using the Disgaea 4 sprites of characters like Laharl, Flonne, and Etna in a Disgaea 1 remake? I think it would work well but it would be a little time consuming and they’d probably have to change the games code a bit. They’d also probably have to remake the environments.

  • jugun

    ZHP VITA!!!!!!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I still need to finish the first!

    • ninjaonizuka

o yea!!! and phantom brave :D

  • nyobzoo

I actually hope they’re making new IPs for the Vita and not ports

    • http://twitter.com/Wakaki2D Wakaki2D

NIS is making new IP’s. But that means nothing as far as NISA is concerned.

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

If they’re making new IPs for the Vita, I’d hope that they’d make PS3 versions as well, like what’s going on with Dragon’s Crown.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Disgaea 3 Vita would be nice. Hm I wonder if they would do another port, was it blue roses, that would be nice.

    • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Im surprised you know blue roses. I hope they do a port and make it a bit better too, since it was obvious they tried to do it with Summon night’s style, but the town and ppl to talk to was a bit empty compared to the summon nights.

Still, its awesome, 2 diff MC and multiple endings each one, it should get more love T-T

      • Ladius

Sadly its sales were quite underwhelming, really a shame :(

      • solbalmung

wait wait wait, you’re talking about Blue Roses that was created by Appolo Soft (or somthing like this, ex Flight Plan members) and released on the psp? That game never made it state side right? you’re talking about the Jap version or did I miss somthing here? D:

        • Locklear93

I’m pretty sure you missed nothing–I certainly don’t remember it coming stateside.

    • Xeahnort

I´d prefer a cross-platform play for the upcoming Disgaea 4.

  • inori_risingsun

three ps2 atelier iris series(eternal mana, azoth of destiny, grand phantasm) in HD is going to be fun,……i love that series,….

    • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

You don’t know how much I’d LOVE to play both Mana Khemia’s on PS3. Especially since my PS2 always struggles to read my memory cards.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

NIS, just make anything, and im sure i will like it, port or not

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Ar Tonelico HD Collection” for PS3!!

…That’d be a keeper. They’ll have to redo the translation on the 2nd game though.

      • Xeahnort

An Ar tonelico/Atelier HD collection would be great but this up to Gust.

        • Locklear93

And Namco-Bandai, I think.  GUST developed the AT games, but Namco-Bandai owns the trademark and did Japanese publication (I think).  I’d definitely go for Ar Tonelico 1 remade, and almost definitely 2, if they fix the translation.

I probably would not go for 3 though.  I didn’t like the gameplay as well, and I felt that the multiple personae inside Saki and Finnel was far less interesting than the different aspects of the reyvateil’s personality angle they had going for the first two.  I finished AT3.  I can’t say I didn’t have fun.  But if I were going to compare it to the first Ar Tonelico… it wouldn’t stand a chance, no matter how fancy a remake might be.

          • http://www.falgram.com/ Falmung

Isn’t Ar Tonelico 3 already HD? There is no need to remaster it. If its for the Vita its even easier to port since its already a ps3 game.

          • Locklear93

It is. I was responding to the idea of an AT collection. AT3 is just the
only one I wouldn’t care if it were released on Vita.

      • http://www.falgram.com/ Falmung

Yes. Ar Tonelico HD please! Love Ar Tonelico 2.

  • JustaGenericUser

I really hope NISA releases some of the games we/I wanted on Vita/PS3 that they wouldn’t/couldn’t on PSP.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vitonofrio-del-Rosso/1170175361 Vitonofrio del Rosso

    no offense but no..
if there’s a company that has no need for more remake/port incentives is nisa..
heck i love disgaea but i couldn’t face another round of disgaea port…
or phantom brave port.. or w/e…
nis (j) should just focus on giving us new game,  no offense..
because this trend of release hd version of old game is getting ludicrous…
sure it MAY be allright for some gamers, but not so for others and I fall in the latter category..
yeah i woke up in a bad mood :/

    • Ladius

NiS was in deep financial trouble till Disgaea 4, so it’s good for them to make some easy money. They sure need it more than Square Enix, which is even more prone to port and remakes than them.

Moreoever, they still have many great titles they haven’t remade: some old Marl Kingdom games, Soul Nomad or Makai Kingdom, for example. Soul Nomad is actually so great I would like them to port it to handhelds just because it needs a second chance to be appreciated as it deserves :P

      • http://twitter.com/Wakaki2D Wakaki2D

that “financial trouble” was from before Disgaea 3. Nis fans have being bringing that up since the 2008 financial report. They were killing themselves coming out with so many bad games. Instead of giving the fans what they want. Kinda like your 2nd paragraph says.

        • Locklear93

Actually, the financial trouble was after Disgaea 3 as much as before.  It’s absolutely true that the real problems started before Disgaea 3, but Ladius is completely right that they’ve only recently started to come out of it.  Disgaea 3 released in January 2008 (in Japan).  Their stock had already gone down in late 2007.  They had a bump in mid 2008, but afterward were worth less after Disgaea 3 than before.

Their stock value stayed very low from late 2008 until a spike in early 2011, probably brought on by Disgaea 4′s popularity (there were stories here about retailers re-ordering), and from NIS doing a little re-arranging/cancellation of projects (there was a story on that here, too).  Their stock right now is higher than it’s been since mid-2008, while it was still dropping after Disgaea 3′s release.  (http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/charts/charts.asp?ticker=3851:JP)

All that said, I agree with you (and this is coming from a rabid NIS fan) that they could be picking better, and releasing fewer remakes.  I definitely didn’t want Phantom Brave for PSP.  It’s the first NIS-developed game released in the USA that I didn’t buy.

        • Ladius

Sadly this isn’t the case, the financial issues continued till D4′s release, and even now it isn’t clear if NIS will be completely safe (I hope so, since they have already made the leap to hi-res sprites and now can dedicate themselves to some easy ports to fund other console games).

That said, I wonder what are the bad games you mention. Their PSP lineup imho was extremely good quality-wise even if the sales were often underwhelming, and as much as I love Soul Nomad I don’t think a SN port for PSP would have done much better than Phantom Brave THT or La Pucelle Ragnarok.

Moreover, their new titles on PSP weren’t exactly smashing hits, aside from ZHP’s decent success: Antiphona no Seikahime was great but tanked hard, Cladun is profitable because of System Prism’s low development costs but nonetheless sold poorly, Blue Roses (an Apollosoft game) had a weak debut even if it was a good game, and so on. It’s not like NIS published only ports for the handheld platforms.

    • http://twitter.com/Wakaki2D Wakaki2D

I agre, besides none of there games are any older than PS2. So why do we need remakes of games that are still out there? Everything NISA does is already a “remake” so I say come up with something new or bring over a new series instead of rehashing the same games over and over and over.

  • Xeahnort

i don’t care as long N1 still developing good games

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

    Lemme guess. ANOTHER Disgaea remake.

    • Ladius

A Disgaea 3 port would be a natural fit for the Vita lineup, it could even be a PSP game considering D3 wasn’t exactly taxing the PS3 hardware.

D4 is too recent for a port, but I can easily see a Vita port in one or two years, especially since the online invasions would combine pretty well with the Vita’s connectivity.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

I don’t want a boatload of ports, but since they ported Disgaea 1 and 2 for PSP, I’d like to see 3 and 4 for Vita.

  • SirRichard

    Soul Nomad Vita.

Make it happen, NIS, make it happen.

(A new Disgaea with Laharl as the protagonist wouldn’t hurt either, I miss the little guy and cameos aren’t enough.)

  • heartless141

talk about remakes, i really want another shadow hearts.
yeah i know, kindda off topic :P

    • Locklear93

I do too, but I’d hope it’s more like the first two than the third.  I really couldn’t get into it, on account of how silly it was.  The first two had no small amount of silly, but I didn’t feel like the whole thing was ridiculous, like I did with the last.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

The first Shadow Heart was more serious, similar to Koudelka, I remember in some point it has some air of a survival horror but It was an RPG. The second one was more bright but still awesome, beatiful graphics and the story was more silly at some points but It has his touching moments and it was a great plot too. I enjoyed more Shadow Heart convenant than Final Fantasy X and they share similar graphics.

So yeah, Shadow hearts is one of those games I really miss so much. One of my favourites in the ps2 era.

  • http://twitter.com/gustave154 gustave154

hope they announce their vita project soon… maybe at TGS?

  • theoriginaled

Strategy series lend themselves perfectly to the pick up and play nature of the handheld. Where I spent maybe 50-60 hours tops on Disgaea when I first got it for the PS2 I have spent nearly 800 combined hours on Disgaea 1 and 2 on the psp (and Ive started in on phantom brave). And the reason is I can play it anywhere and anytime. On a console youre stuck in front of the tv, you have to save and quit when you have to go which is never conducive to the huge item world dungeons and lengthy content in these types of games. With a portable you can Just throw it on standby and pick it up again later. Its perfect. Disgaea 3, Disgaea 4, Soul Nomad, Grim Grimoire, theyre perfect for the Vita.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Ports and remakes everywhere. Im not surprised NIS.

At least a Soul Nomad/Makai Kingdom remake with a lot of things will be awesome.

  • PrinceHeir

i want my collection of Disgaea and Mana Khemia release please!!!
