Your First Good Look Inside Rune Factory 4

By Ishaan . June 30, 2011 . 4:33am

This week’s Famitsu magazine revealed Rune Factory 4 for the Nintendo 3DS, and now Famitsu.com have an article on the game, which gives us a much better look at it. First up are the selectable protagonists, both a male and a female character.

The male’s name is Les, while the female is called Frey. Despite assigning names to their protagonists, past Rune Factory games have allowed you to name them whatever you like, so I assume Rune Factory 4 will follow that trend.

Like previous games, your protagonist suffers from amnesia at the start of the game. Comically, they fall out of an airship and hit their head. Following this, they somehow end up living a temporary life as a prince or princess, which opens up some new game systems like constructing buildings. You can find more details of this in this older update.

Both characters have the ability to communicate with dragons, but there are no details available as to how this will tie into the game just yet.

When a potential loves first shows up in Rune Factory 4, you get to see a movie of them. Once you start courting members of the opposite gender, you won’t have to dive straight into marriage after getting together — you’ll have the opportunity to maintain your relationship as lovers, not just with one but with multiple candidates.

Here’s three of them: Margaret, Dolchié (I think that’s how it’s romanized) and Vishnal:

(Margaret’s so cute)

As we mentioned in yesterday’s update, you aren’t restricted to a strict grid in Rune Factory 4 while planting crops. Once you find a nice field to farm in, you can plant crops in whatever formation you choose. You can even grow giant crops. I wonder how you’d carry that giant turnip to your storage chest…

Finally, like previous games, Famitsu confirms that you can tame monsters in dungeons and raise them. Rune Factory 4 is about 50% complete and is due out this year. Head over to Famitsu at the link above to check out more screenshots.

This looks… weird. It’s like a mix of 2D and 3D with an overhead perspective. Those vegetables there look unsettling.

  • Kirbysuperstar2

Probably just my imagination, but Vishnal looks kinda like Lucrezia Noin.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Zekushion Dylan Anantha

Wow, just noticed! Noin with light blue hair!

  • RagnaXBL

after seeing what they’re doing with RF oceans, i’m confident this will get localised at some point, i just hope its sooner than later

  • Corvax

Hmm, I haven’t played Rune Factory, but it looks interesting.  I used to play Harvest Moon back in middle school, but I eventually stopped because all the farming got so tedious and boring after a while.  Rune Factory looks like the kick the HM series needed.

  • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

Looks great. I’d still need more persuasion to get a 3DS though. Not to mention the EU releases of the series have been really, really late.

Hey, wait. Would there be yaoi/yuri romance this time then? …Hard to imagine it’ll get past the censors in the West though.

    • Corvax

Yeah, I doubt it if there is, given Natsume’s track record.  I remember reading one of the Harvest Moon DS games had some feature where the main female character could become “best friends” with another girl, move in together, and adopt a child.  Natsume took that out of the localized version with no explanation given.

      • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

[Sigh] I know censors can help establish some sort of standard or filter to exclude works that are unfavorable for the medium, theorecially; like low-effort or rude/disruptive works. But the way censorship boards run today is just forehead-slapping pointless; they tend to find offense or objectionable material where it doesn’t exist.

P.S: I remember that avatar. Muzzy in Gondoland, isn’t it?

        • Corvax

          Yup, it’s from Muzzy.

Hoping that the graphics will get upgraded though, they look almost exactly like RF 3. Still, cannot wait! RF was one of my favourite DS series!

  • raikage

I was hoping for a graphic-style like Frontier or Oceans…
    However, it’s still good. ^^

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Ojsinnerz Firo_Prochainezo

    3DS, HERE I COME.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Wait on the graphic statements, this has similar look as the DS RF games (that farm picture), but that dungeon pic looks much closer to Frontier than RF 3.  That pic would look amazing in motion due to the river and petals dropping.

  • Remina

Oddly, this has sold me on a 3DS over Ocarina of Time and Mega Man Legends 3 lol.

    • xXDGFXx

this was pretty much what i was hoping for when i got a 3DS. if this had not come, i would be sad…

  • DanteJones

Hmm, the character art is alright, still a bit on the cutesy side. Though it looks like they let up a little bit on that permanent blush that the characters of Rune Factory seem to always have.

EDIT: That’s a effing huge turnip!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rudy-Soto/100001518601121 Rudy Soto

      Mist’s dream came true.

      • DanteJones

That’d be great if she made a cameo as “The Turnip Bandit” or something, haha.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rudy-Soto/100001518601121 Rudy Soto

lol, that’d be genius, and knowing her, she’d be like “Hi, I’m am the Turnip bandit, and I’m here to steal your turnip -struggles- Can you help me steal this, please?”

  • http://www.facebook.com/jstack Jon Stachewicz

Honestly I’m not a fan of the male character art at all, so this might be the first Harvest Moon game where I play the girl

  • punkchobit

Wait, that’s a natsume game? Damn, they’ve gotten better artists. That game is adorable.

    • xXDGFXx

they’ve had the same artist for rune factory since 1…

    • puchinri

No, that’s a MMV game being developed by Neverland.
Natsume is just the NA publisher/localization co. for HM/RF.

  • http://twitter.com/LeanaEstheim Leana

I can’t wait for this! But I dont really like how the male protagonist looks… -___-
Kinda reminds me of a girl…. kinda like Iris…

    • DanteJones

      CANNOT UNSEE! *hissss*

At least its a little less androgynous than the protagonist from RF3, all he needed was boobs and he could have passed as a woman.

    • puchinri

That just makes him better~? He did have me fooled a bit for a second though. I do like his design still.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rudy-Soto/100001518601121 Rudy Soto

I’m slightly disappointed on the graphics of game, I really felt as though they would use the graphics the 3DS is capable of to their advantage. But hey, a traditional Rune Factory game isn’t so bad right?

  • Shinji Kazuya

This game looks nice. I haven’t played any Rune Factory yet but at last 3 is coming to Europe thanks to Rising Star Games so I’ll be getting it. And might get Frontier for the Wii too since it’s very cheap at the moment.
I never liked Harvest Moon much ’cause it was always planting crops and feeding the cows, chickens and pigs but Rune Factory looks great.

    • raikage

      There were no pigs.

    • puchinri

Frontier is the only one I played so far, but it’s a really fun game. I got mine cheap too, and it was definitely worth the price.
(Did you play either of the HM games for Wii? There’s more socialization to it, especially in ToT.)

      • Shinji Kazuya

Nope. Never played any Harvest Moon for Wii. :<

        • puchinri

          Oh. ;A;
If you get a chance, I think ToT is at least worth a try. (‘:
AP/WakuAni is fun and bright (and has tons of fun customziation), but I think they really messed up some things. (Like the spacing on the map, draining the characters of personality, and poor Owen and Luna’s proportions…)

  • regreto

wow i can`t wait for this game!

  • puchinri

I was looking at some of those screens last night. I am content that we have at least one sexy bachelor.

The game sounds quite fun so far, and I look forward to more news as it draws closer to completion.

  • Bunzi

I was pretty fond of Rune Factory 3′s half monster protagonist and his ability to shift from one form to a another. This one’s a sure fire purchase if a similar system’s in place.

  • xflame10

I’m gonna have to remain single in this game……. my heart still belongs to melody.

  • Suicunesol

Oh, come off it. I think the male is as masculine-looking as you can get in a Rune Factory game.

I won’t lie that I am disappointed that it looks so much like RF3. It’s the clunky, top-down overhead view that bothered me the most about RF games.

…it doesn’t look bad though. In fact, its 2D environments appear very pretty and detailed–as always. I’m just disappointed that the jump to better hardware didn’t seem to change anything when I expected it to. I guess Neverland decided to adopt the graphical approach they’re best at, which must be 2D.

…I have to say that farm looks pretty pathetic, though. I hope that you arrange vegetables with the stylus.

  • meat0bun

The 3D character models look MUCH better than the… uh… “things” that were supposed to look like people in RF3. Hurrah!

2D art looks great as always. Also, DAT GIANT TURNIP.

Hmm…at least I won’t have any conscience marrying of my male character this time. (The main character in RF3 look too much of a child-girl that I think I committed pedophile or something…)

  • http://twitter.com/FuyuhotaruX Kururu

is it just me or is that horns on Margaret’s head?

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

I hope they using japanese voice … because the english voice sucks …

I love everything revealed so far about this game. For a female player…there is some really nice features added. And if the butler in training is the first potential mate revealed, I can only imagine what is to come.

The dragons sound pretty cool, I also like how you can cheat X”D and not have to beat the game and play it ten times because you want to marry someone else.

oooh I wonder when and if it releases to NA if they will come out with a special dragon plushie for pre-orders? that would be  sooo awesome.

I don’t think the male protagonist is too girly. Not in comparable to the last two. : X I think maybe its just the fact he has purple eyes, or maybe its the light blonde hair.

I personally think he is really cute ;3 I plan to play both male and female in this game as the characters all look so great.

my boyfriend likes to play prince types over mainstream ‘bad ass’ characters and so do I.

And I love how the main girl is slightly tanned, she seems to be more feminine then previous female protagonists and I’m loving how the male and female main characters DO NOT look like twins. :D

well looking forward to more updates about this game in the making, I have a feeling with the new features this will be the best RF yet!!

Aw, Frey’s a cutie! She’s feminine but not too feminine for a farmer!

The Rune Factory games always get better with each installment, so I am so excited!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4XIVMFUT7PFWAX2TU4MH72GON4 Tricia

I don’t know….I wish that they had kept the farming system from Rune Factory 2 when it came to RF3 and maybe RFF (haven’t played it since I don’t have a Wii so can’t comment on it really) because RF3′s farming system was WAY too complicated for a farming/fighting game. It tends to leave me little room to fight and woo the girls. I mean I’d understand it if it was a regular Harvest Moon game but not a Rune Factory game.

  • XxDestinyXx

A female you can play at the beginning of the game? I am going to have to buy a 3DS!  =D

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tia-England-Montoya/100000190115929 Tia England Montoya

      I know right!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4XIVMFUT7PFWAX2TU4MH72GON4 Tricia

I definitely will buy a 3DS for this game….even though 3D gives me a headache. I can’t wait to see the rest of the bachelors and bachelorettes! The ones shown so far are really cool looking. I just also can’t wait for the profiles of them either since I tend to go more for personality than looks (though looks is a bonus ;) )
