Rurouni Kenshin To See Live-Action Film Next Year

By Ishaan . July 2, 2011 . 3:30pm

Warner Japan are set to film a live-action Rurouni Kenshin film starting this month, according to a report at Variety. Playing the lead role of Himura Kenshin will be Takeru Sato (right), who recently starred in 2010’s Beck.

Warner are targeting a 2012 release Rurouni Kenshin movie. The film will be directed by Keishi Otomo, a director of dramas for broadcaster NHK in Japan. The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been revealed.

Other Rurouni Kenshin projects currently in the works are a new anime feature — although it’s unknown as to whether this will be a long-running series or will take on some other format — and re-mastered Blu-Ray re-releases of the two OVAs and anime films.

I think Gackt made a better Kenshin :) And he was the voice of Genesis in Crisis Core…

Hope there would be some cool special effect, still haven’t seen Goemon w/ Eguchi Yousuke yet…

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Not fair, Gackt makes a better everyone =P

He’s like the Japanese David Bowie. Or even better.

(And Bunraku is finally out!… I think. That took ages.)

      • Aoshi00

That’s true, he’s so androgynous cosplaying pretty anime chars is right up his alley, but especially so in Kenshin’s case :).  What’s Bunraku?  It’s not like Sukiyaki Western Django right, I saw that one it was kinda bizarre w/ some interesting parts..  this looks like Kill Bill..

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

In a world where there’s no guns, a gipsy (Josh Hartnett) and a samurai (I think) (Gackt) travel together and there’s lots of fighting and sweet visual effects and… That’s all I can tell you, really =P Oh, I think Demi Moore’s in, too.

The movie was announced ages ago but details were kinda scarce, so I don’t really remember much, sorry. It’s probably not an amazing movie… Just an enjoyable one!

          • Aoshi00

cool, I’ve never heard of Bunraku before, wonder if Gackt would have many lines (I just saw Green Hornet, Jay Chou’s English was pretty good considering he just memorized the lines)..  I still haven’t The Warrior’s Way.. lots of movies in the summer, going to see Cowboys vs Aliens too..  I just saw Transformers 3, it was so long and boring *.*…

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I… THINK he speaks in Japanese and they don’t really understand each other… I could be wrong, though! Gotta see Green Hornet sometime, looks fun! Cowboys vs. Aliens too, ahah.

T3, boring? NOOOOOO. I really enjoyed the over the top and mindless action of the previous two… I’ll try to watch it anyway =P

      • Oh wow, it really is done. XD I haven’t kept up with Bunraku news in forever. lol I can’t wait to see it. My old Gackt fangirlism is gonna die in happiness.

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

It got pretty stale for a long time, so it’s understandable that we kinda forgot about it! I know I did =P

Really curious to see just how good it is. I remember reading about Gackt posting production pics in his blog and the director getting mad at him or something. BAKA GAKUTO.

    • They’ve been talking about the live-action Kenshin movie since last year. lol Watsuki-sensei’s wife wanted an actor that actually did period dramas for the role of Kenshin.. but they chose this guy instead. *doesn’t know any of the Japanese actors because she doesn’t really watch any live action shows from Japan* Tho… I hope it’s not going to be “loosely” based off the manga and anime, like most other movies and dramas are.

      • Aoshi00

It’s made by Japan so it should be okay like Death Note unlike the loose adaptation DB Evolution (even though I didn’t like Fujiwara Tatsuya’s Light that much, guess I was too used to Miyano Mamoru’s much more dramatic anime voice).. and some over the top CG for the special moves like Goemon.. a 2-hr movie is probably too short.. I would’ve wanted someone from period dramas to play Kenshin too.. I haven’t watched Jpn dramas in recent years so I’m not familiar w/ these new actors either..

Wait, Watsuki-sensei is married alrdy?  I think I heard about it before… I’ve always thought he had a thing going w/ his writing partner Kurosaki Kaoru since she had worked on so many things like Busou Renkin and now Embalming..

        • lol I misread the article I read a few days ago.. but Takeru Sato was the man Watsuki’s wife chose. lol darn me skimming over articles and not actually reading them. XD

EDIT: Totally forgot to mention my “complaints” about the loosely thing.. In the few movies/series I saw or read about, they changed quite a bit. Like Absolute Boyfriend wasn’t a school setting, it was a work place for characters in their 20s. (That alone made me not want to watch it.. but I’ll eventually sit down and check it out..) Adding in stuff, like in Death Note, or changing things in the sequel, also kinda urked me.. but that’s mostly expected in live action/anime adaptions anyways. lol I guess they don’t want it tooo predictable, even tho we know the story already.

          • Aoshi00

Oh right, I totally forgot Zettai Kareshi was made into a drama before, I read most of the manga (I even got the drama CD), but only saw the first episode of the drama (that was when I started to stop following dramas :(…  I guess it is inevitable they change some things around like the ending to make it refreshing, but I don’t like them changing to different settings either.. I guess many J-dramas have the office as the setting.. I remember the actress who played the main char was cute though, and the robot boyfriend was tall and handsome :)

P.S. If Watsuki’s wife wants this guy, I guess he’s alright, hopefully he’d pull off a cool Kenshin. Looking forward to this live action movie the more I think about it, like Shishio’s Guren Kaina :)

Hm.. Kaname Jun could be a pretty cool Aoshi… wonder who they would pick to play Saitou lol.. and they should find a cute kid to play Soujirou. They should give Kaneshiro Takeshi (Samanosuke in Onimusha) a role or something..

  • ninjaonizuka

O_O”…………………..was NOT expecting one of my fave animes ever to be made into a live action movie……..well i hope this is good like death note not bad like dragon ball *shivers* they better not screw this up >,>

    • Aoshi00

They’ve done many period dramas so it should be ok.. I think there was some stage play or musicals for Kenshin before if I remember correctly.. and I haven’t seen that big budget action movie Goemon yet, it was kind of like 300.. this kid looks like a punk though…  nothing could be worse than DB Evolution :(…

  • joesz

    OMG…I can’t imagine this kid as Kenshin….

    • Aoshi00

All the young actors look like punk kids these days :(.. didn’t like the live action Yagami Light either, looks like a punk.. I just checked, this guy’s not even 28 lol, even though Kenshin’s supposed to be young looking.. would be cooler if they have a cool looking woman playing Kenshin..

      • joesz

If that were to happen put in mind that these will most likely happen
        1-Meiji era tentacle raping
        2-excessive amount of eichiness.

Ok,I’ll get serious. That might actually be interesting yet weird. You know why:D

        • Aoshi00

I was just thinking more like traditional stage play like Takarazuka.. Suzukaze Mayo was one and that’s why she was picked to be Kenshin’s seiyuu for the anime.. she had been in many period dramas playing the role of guys.. and most cool Kenshin cosplayers were female because they’re better looking, so… or unless you look like Gackt lol..

          • joesz

l liked Gackt as Genesis. They basically look the same.

Well,Let’s just hope that they cast Chuck Norris as Hiko Seijuro.

          • Aoshi00

Yea, they totally modeled Genesis after Gackt and he lent his voice to the game too, so Genesis might as well be Gackt.. They better find a cool guy to be Aoshi :)

          • @aoshi00:disqus  lol Aoshi is one of my two favorite characters.. I hope they choose someone cool for him too.

  • anbu

I wanna see a Kenshin vs Saitou fight in this movie .

I remember watching that scene where kenshin fought Saitou in the dojo.  Pretty intense and one of the best fight scene I’ve seen in an anime.

  • badmoogle

I hope Taro Iwashiro will be the composer.

  • KyoyaHibari

WHERE’S INFO ON THE NEW ANIME!? ~.~ Still, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

    • Aoshi00

So far they’re airing re-runs of selected eps in Jpn, and re-releasing the OVAs/movie on blu-rays, other than that, not sure if they’re actually drawing anything new..

      • KyoyaHibari

I read that they are doing a new anime project but there’s no info on the format of it I think

        • Aoshi00

I think a remake is pretty much out of the question, and I don’t see them doing a condensed ver. of Jinchuu either, they kinda did it briefly in the Seisou-hen OVAs.. all these anime talk might just be this selected re-run and blu-ray re-release.. I’ll believe Jinchuu when I see it :)  For now, a live action movie could be pretty interesting, I hope they would cast the actors well.

          • KyoyaHibari

It is actually green-lit, but more info will be provided in future articles of Jump Square where Watsuki publishes his Embalming manga, here’s the link:

          • Aoshi00

Right, but the question is is it Jinchuu finally getting a TV series in full or just a 20 minute short OVA for its anniversary kinda thing like Shougakukan did for Ranma/Urusei Yatsura/Inuyasha (Inuyasha did get a final season after so many yrs).. I don’t think it’s a remake of the old series because they are just airing the old eps now.  I’ve wanted it for over a decade alrdy but I’ve pretty much given up hope, if they do it that’s great (the Saint Seiya Hades OVAs after over a decade wasn’t that great though), hope the old cast would be back and they’re still up to it.  For now I quite enjoy reading Embalming, and can’t help but be interested in this live action movie. But I mean, it’s been so long alrdy it’s quite unbelievable.. I was in college when I was reading Kenshin :(…

          • KyoyaHibari

@aoshi00:disqus I don’t think they would talk about green-lighting a 20 minute OVA lol, I think they are talking about a whole new series, I would imagine that after so many years, they would make a full remake adaption, because the RK anime was in like 1995 and it’s 2011, I think the transition of animation quality after over a decade would be quite unsettling so I imagine it is a fresh new fully canon remake from start to finish of the manga, Inuyasha was a 5 year difference so the quality didn’t stray THAT much, and it was a closer, more recent gap of 4/5 years so people remember it more easily I would imagine not like 15 years from the first RK anime to the new one which will come out.

          • Aoshi00

Saint Seiya was like that actually, the anime ran for 3 yrs and ended in 1989 (w/ Poseidon) and the last arc Hades was never animated (a drama CD was made) until 2003, like 13-14 yrs later (and now you have the new Lost Canvas OVAs)…  If they’re doing a full Kenshin reboot, I don’t think they would be airing the old episodes w/o the fillers now.  The whole anime “project” seems to be just re-releasing the old stuff.. like the OVAs on blu-rays and would be available for downloads from the Jpn PSN store later..  If they’re indeed doing a Jinchuu TV series, it would be awesome news, but like I said I would only believe it when I see it.   And even for Full Metal Alchemist, the original TV series wasn’t that long ago, but it had a different ending and they did a reboot so soon..  and I’ve seen classics like Ranma and Urusei Yatsura (Lum) only given a short OVA to celebrate Shogakukan’s anniversary..  I just have a feeling if it’s a Jinchuu TV series, they would’ve announced it alrdy.. we’ll see… Personally I don’t want to see the whole series redrawn again w/ new animation and colored digitally, just picking up where they left off is enough (re-drawing the Flashback arc in Watsuki style instead of OVA style would be very interesting compared to the OVAs). And since they’re putting on re-runs right now, it’s like they’re readying new audience by showing them the beginning up until Shishio, and then pick up from Jinchuu (if they are doing a series that is)

          • KyoyaHibari

@aoshi00:disqus  Still, ANN doesn’t lie man, the proof is in the pudding, something new is green-lit, no rehashes I would suspect, I’m just concerned on whether or not it is a whole new remake or just the Jinchuu added on which hopefully it isn’t.

  • Live action? Lol, no thanks.

    • Aoshi00

Hm.. we’ve read the manga and seen the anime and played the games (not very good ones…), a live action movie could turn out to be interesting.. they could do much better CG nowadays.. if it’s only one 2-hr movie I wonder which parts would make it.. hey at least they don’t need to shave their heads like other period dramas :)

      • Wake

I’d rather see a continuation of the anime. It’s sad that they cancelled it just when the series was going to get way better. I really want to see the remaining arc’s of the manga in anime form.

        • Aoshi00

I’ve wanted to see Jinchuu in anime form all these years as well, but I’m not sure if it’s happening.  So I’m not expecting anything now, if it happens it happens if not then I’m not disappointed, so far it looks like re-runs and releases on blu-ray. I alrdy did my part of importing the crappy PSP game (in hope that they would anime Jinchuu) and I’m collecting the blu-rays as well..  And I doubt they would do a complete reboot of the series since they’re airing selected eps of the old series in Jpn now, it’s not something I want to see redrawn anyway. Maybe this live action movie would make the series popular again who knows. I have a feeling they might animate Embalming (once the manga is done or gets far enough ahead) than Jinchuu any time soon. I really like Watsuki’s new art in Embalming, very detailed, but it’s monthly serialization so we get like one tankoubon a year or something..

The more I think about it, the more interested I am about this movie.. I ‘mean Gyakuten Saiban is getting one (it has its over the top elements too), and they did a great job w/ Nodame Cantabile drama and many more… w/ some cool CG, this might not be that far fetched, it’s just like a period drama after all.. there were a lot of Shinsengumi drama in the past, if they want to be more realistic, I could see a live action Flashback arc could be pulled off rather well. I can’t wait to see the actors re-enact some famous scenes.. I hope this guy gets his Oro down :)

  • Double posted, whoops! Anyway, definitely looking forward to the anime remake.

  • Wow he kinda looks like him too. They gonna dye his hair red and everything? Hope he can pull off the ‘killer’ personality switch.

    • Well, Watsuki’s wife did chose him to play as Kenshin, which he agreed with.

Anyone besides me used to watch the anime way back on the old Toonami? Those were really good times, weren’t they? As long as they make the movie good, I’ll be okay with it.

    • Oh Toonami, you gave us Zoids, Gundams and so much damn Dragon Ball Z you’d choke. TOM is the reason why I love Steve Blum. Those were indeed good times. [AS] is getting better with it’s anime, with the recent addition of Durarara!!! and such, but it will never be the same.

High hopes for the movie. Otomo directed Ryomaden, which was a smash hit, so this should be in some capable hands.

      • I miss the good old Toonami days. I was introduced to so much anime because of it.

        • Quick Poll! Which incarnation of TOM is your favorite/do you remember the most?

For me, it would have to be the short, stout TOM. He taught me so many lessons, such as how to deal with anger, ( experience and stuff.

Long live Toonami in all our hearts!!!

  • Souji Tendou

    Oh hey, it’s Den-O actor. :D

  • And Now Warner-Japan Destroys something so amazing like Rurouni Kenshin … with a Film … whyyyyyy?????

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

You never know, it could be good. Look at the Gantz movie. That certainly wasn’t bad

  • Guest

I need to see live action Yamato and live action Ashita no Joe first

  • jugun
  • LezardValeth

This can either go very well or very very badly…..I’m leaning towards the latter.

  • NOOOOOOOOO They Are Going To Fucking It Up

    • It is actually in some very capable hands. Otomo is brilliant, and has directed on of the most popular Japanese historical dramas in several years, Ryomaden. You should check it out. While is will be odd seeing Takeru as someone other than Ryotaro Nogami, I have no doubts that the direction will be spot-on.

  • ZBaksh386

Ehh, its got more of a chance because the japanese are doing it and its harder to do than most animes because it is inherinetley tied to japan culture like akira where fullmetal alchemist and bleach arent so tied.

  • Exkaiser

Kamen Rider Den-O is going to be Kenshin? I’m not sure how to feel about that one.

    • Kenshin henshin! Lol, sorry for bad joke~

    • ya i agree

    • why? would tht be bad?

      • Exkaiser

No, I’m just not sure how I feel about seeing Kenshin and expecting him to put on a belt and transform.

        Satoh’s a great actor, though.

  • I’m not sure if I should go all “YAY!” or “NAY!”…

Oh, well, let’s wait and see.

  • wil the fan the live united states who love rurouni kenshins will we get to see it to

  • ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh……… I HOPE THEY DONT MESS THIS STORY!!1 IF THEY DO I WILL DIE!!!! ppl who make action movies of anime eithr is soooooo DARN COOL!!! …. or mess it up……. BADLY…………………….IN EXTREME MOTION!… oh well idk if i should be exited or ehhhhhhhhhhhh…. HEKK NO!!!!….. lol for those who r wondering my language……………… im rated PG! XD lol yeaaaa…………… i dont curse much……………..BUT STILL THEY BETTER NOT MESS THIS EXPERIENCE FOR ME!!!!!!……………….     <===…….tht sounded wrong….   O.o…….. AND I THOUGH I WAS RATED PG!!!! XD XD XD LAWL!
