Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Is Beatmania Meets Final Fantasy

By Spencer . July 5, 2011 . 10:49pm

Square Enix has a new Final Fantasy game for Nintendo 3DS, but it’s quite different from the other games in the series.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, as seen in this week’s issue of Jump, is a theater rhythm action game. Players will explore dungeons, towns, and battle enemies in traditional Final Fantasy style… but everything in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy plays like a music game. You use the stylus to tap and hold notes while fighting behemoth, for example.

Expect popular songs and characters from the entire Final Fantasy series to appear in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. A screenshot shows Kingdom Hearts avatar versions of Cloud, the Warrior of Light, Lightning, and Onion Knight. Kind of looks like a musical version of Dissidia: Final Fantasy, doesn’t it?

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy is coming to Nintendo 3DS, but Shonen Jump did not specify a release date. Square Enix has not said anything about a North American release, but we spotted a trademark for Theatrhythm a few weeks ago before the announcement.

  • Great more of a reason to hear that overrated song called “One Wing Angel”

    • One Winged Angel is absolutely amazing in my book, but I’m probably biased by the orchestral versions I’ve heard.

      • Not a bad song. I like it. I just don’t like the fact that people claim its the best song in a game ever.

        • Kris

I personally prefer “Dancing Mad,” myself :)
          All 18 minutes of it.

          • Micheal Willis

The only people more annoying than people who overrate OWA are those who overrate Dancing Mad.

          • malek86

I must be the only person in the world whose favorite FF soundtrack is the one from FF1.

          • doomspeller10

@malek86:disqus  forever alone? just joking. Without FF1 there wouldn’t have been any others, so all of its elements deserve respect, especially music, at a time where composers were really limited.

            Maybe I’m a Lion

  • NotABananana

So instead of making a good game, they go for the quick cash maker, outstanding business decisions as always, Square Enix.

    • i thought the quick cash maker was FF XIII-2?

      • NotABananana

This has more of that quick cash feel to me, just mash all the characters together and throw some gameplay in there and the fans will buy it.

FF XIII-2 could be more of an apology for the letdown that was XIII.

        • Suicunesol

And they will. It’s an excellent business strategy.

        • Guest

Seems like more of a ‘full’ game than the upcoming Evangelion music game. You wanna talk about quick cash ins..look to that series…

    • Chippel

Yeah! Let’s restrict our games to one genre!

This is far from the worst series milking I’ve seen. Sure, they *could* have made a new story/new music for it, but the use of familiar songs is one of the most fun things in musical games.

    • Probably.  And you know what? I ain’t even mad.

  • This actually has me very intrigued. I hope this game is great. Haters will hate regardless.

  • I thought you couldn’t get any odder with Final Fantasy game names than “Dissidia Duodecim”, but then this came along.

    Latin VS Portmanteau
    Heaven or Hell
    Round 1
    Let’s Rock

  • kupomogli

Hopefully it has a good portion of music from the series.  100-150 songs atleast. It still leaves room for atleast one or two sequels if the first sells well.

    • puchinri

Ahh, that’s true and very smart.

  • The logo even looks like chibi Dissidia logo…love it.

    • doomspeller10

You’re right, it looks a lot like the Dissidia logo, it’s like a chibi version.
I just hope the plot is not the Goddess of Harmony versus… the God of Musical Impairment, arrhythmia, or some crap like that. I don’t even want to think of stupid names that have to do with music. SE really has a thing for overly complex names.

  • This was the new title Nomura was teasing? That’s a of a big dissapointment. Was hoping for a game that was a bit meatier.

Also, anyone else find they’re not able to comment in Firefox? That Google Like thing looks like it’s overlaying the entire text area.

  • I want to be excited that it has rhythm gameplay… but I can’t be excited.

  • XypherCode

What ever happened to Chocobo Racing and 1 other FF(RPG?) title for the 3DS?
This sounds exciting ’cause I happen to like rhythm games but this is really unexpected :|
Nevertheless this game looks fun :P hopes for a NA release :D

  • puchinri

That’s interesting concept. Sounds like it could be fun.

  • Poor Onion Knight, must not be able to carry a tune.

I think it’s kind of interesting, especially if it features Final Fantasy music. I would “The Man With The Machine Gun” all day.

    • Yui

I think you accidentally a verb in there, but no worries, the sentiment is definitely one I agree with. If they can make it like Osu! or EBA, in a sense, or even Parappa, like @facebook-100002316814779:disqus mentioned, and pull it off properly, I’m fairly certain it could be really good. :D
I hope they release it in the EU, so I can pick it up, eventually. :P

Actually, an addendum, the whole “explore towns, dungeons, etc.” thing is probably what sits the most comfortably with me. A new FF game, that simply incorporates a new method of engaging with battles and whatnot? I don’t see any problems with that. The main series is pretty much the same most of the time anyway. :D

      • Hoh hoh hoh, it was very intentional. I have this habit of verbifying nouns.

  • omg FF gose to pa pa the rap er….. SE is stabbing the FF series to the floor ; ;

  • imaguni

    Er, welp.

/throws hands up in the air.

  • This game should be renamed Patapon: Dissidia Final Fantasy! Also, we need the spoony bards of Final Fantasy to take over this game, bards tend to be forgotten in most FF games. (Looking at you, Edward and TAY Edward). Looking forward to this though, Square always thinks of great gimmicks to use in battle systems.

  • doomspeller10

I guess a lot of fanboys want yet another rehash of one winged angel. I don’t mind that if it’s well executed. However, I expect an easter egg pokérap with FF summons instead, it could be the most powerful spell in the game, or maybe even summonable pokémons XD. After all, it’s for a nintendo console.
If this game is about music, it’d be nice if Uematsu is directly involved.

    • Oh god, no more heartless Angel…..That song is overused way too much. Anyway, if Sephiroth dies in this game again, it will be his 8th or 9th death. Poor guy, how many times will Cloud kill him….

      • IB2004

Im no ff7 fan but its my fourth favorite but im kinda tired of seeing him and hearing his name and his theme song one ups me(how I say sticks its middle finger) by saying his name 20 times

      • doomspeller10

For just one time I’d like to see Zack come back and kick Sephiroth’s ass to hell.

  • Methylene

Well, even the logo looks like a more cartoonish version of Dissidia, so it might very well be.

  • SirRichard

Well, it’s an interesting little spinoff idea, if nothing else.

  • I’m a sucker for rhythm games (except rock band and guitar hero alikes).
If this FF has a good story and rhythm, I’m beggin SE to localize because this looks promising.

    • Guest

      Bust a Groove series
Lupin the Third: Punch The Monkey
      Slap Happy Rythym Busters
      Custom Beat Battle Draglade 1 & 2

      • Oh man, I loved the Draglade games. Still butthurt that the second was never localised….

  • Ehhh? Hmm… Looks like it’ll be fun, but that was totally unexpected from Square Enix, in my opinion….

  • You know, when I was praying to the gods at Square Enix for a Dissidia RPG, this isn’t QUITE what I had in mind, but alright.

    3DSWare or no sale.

  • Rihawf

…High Dissidia Musical? Better be good…otherwise….

  • Well this is…interesting
    I am intrigued ._.

  • keriaku

I’m very excited for this. I hope there’s lots of fun stuff like EXP, Gil, KP, etc. Dissidia showed that Square knows how to make an addictive game. vThat plus the awesome of a rhythm game? I’m double sold.

  • Krozoa

dunno you I dont have a game that have best song, as I think i like some of almost all games, but if there one song I liked to be is the Dissidia 012 version of the battle theme of FFIV

  • Ultimate_Tifa_Fan

So….. If i play the fanfare victory song…. will I instantly win the battle? =3

  • IB2004

Dam I hate how they put down the originals and power up any tetsuya nomura creation I swear if it wasn’t for dissidia people would have not known about 6 other games before vii that aren’t about cloud but he is still cool the vii one the av emo

  • It turns out the creators of The World Ends with You is back with Square Enix.

    We all know that means.

  • how come most nintedo games are based on playstation games? can’t they come up with something original for the console? sorry can’t help but noticing it. :P

  • xflame10

is…….is it wrong that i want this? cmon it’s like rock band meets final fantasy they even said it will have exploration, towns, and dungeons!!! even if it those have a rhythm based battle system that still sounds awesome……… here’s hoping for a sliver of a change of marche and luso being in it :3
