Xehanort’s Last Game Will Be Kingdom Hearts III, Sora Will Still Be The Protagonist

By Spencer . July 12, 2011 . 9:06pm

kingdomFans waiting for Kingdom Hearts III will see some answers leading towards the next core title in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Kingdom Hearts 3D will have a secret movie. Speaking with Famitsu, Nomura says the Nintendo 3DS game is between 40-50% complete.

This story will be mysterious and quite difficult to understand. It involves Sora’s secret data and Traverse Town. Famitsu blocked out two other areas that players will explore. Since the magazine did this these are likely familiar areas. Players will climb on top of buildings in Kingdom Hearts 3D so you’ll see familiar areas from a new perspective, perhaps.

Sora and Riku are the two lead characters in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Nomura says Sora will still be the series protagonist even after Kingdom Hearts III, but archenemy Xehanort’s role will end with the trilogy.

  • …even AFTER KHIII

And I honestly was never that fond of Sora…:/

    • we got 2 groups who love to overmilk things, Square Enix AND disney. this series is NEVER gonna end

      • I see a possible Kingdom Hearts Disney ride in the future ._.; If it happens… I so called it XD

        • There’s been rumors of that for the past few years.. There was mention of someone seeing “Heartless” symbols at Disneyworld/land years ago. >.>

          • Eh!?!? Really :O!? Wow… I wonder what kind rides there would be if this did happen lol

        • They should atleast add some Kingdom Hearts stuff to Disney Sea in Tokyo :|

    • Aiddon

agreed, this has become too convoluted for its own good. The series is already milked as it is, we don’t need more of it

      • ForeverFidelis

Come on. It’s not being milked. Stop throwing around that word.

I honestly haven’t had any interest in this series after KH2, but this is this guy’s vision.

He’s not just pumping out more and more KH games because he knows the title Kingdom Hearts=instasale. He’s pumping out these titles because this is what he’s been planning and he wants to finish the story the way he’s thought it up.

Mind you, this is all an assumption, but it is quite obviously at least part of the situation

        • MizuMikomi

I believe Nomura said the BbS team is working on Dream Drop Distance instead of the main team, meaning they still have their hands tied with V-XIII. So his and their involvement in that title is another factor… as he has said on numerous occasions.

But nevertheless, I am glad to see someone I can agree with in this instance. Since all I ever hear is: “Stop milking the series!” or “Stop the spinoffs!”

They aren’t spinoffs, Nomura has even said that Birth By Sleep was in development during 2’s development, same with Coded and Days. So the man has a story, and he wants to finish it. I don’t blame him, since I think he has gotten a bit in over his head… most of his fans hate him for it as well. *shrug*

But still, I am glad that I have read someone else saying what I have been saying since BbS, Days, and Coded were announced. It’s really refreshing too not see pointless bashing for once. xD

  • cant wait to play as ninja riku and stripper sora lol but in all seriousness wth man. im tired of shelling out money just to keep up with a series. im not one to wikipedia wat happened, i like experiencing it first hand. but i swear the kh series has to be one of the most expensive to keep up with. its annoying that all the games are canon too in a sense. its been in a downward spiral for awhile now. started playd it in 5 grade (8 years ago LONG TIME lol) when it first came out. i was young and it become my fav series. now that im older i couldnt even bring myself to play recoded. 30 minutes into traverse town and i said screw this. kh should end at part 3. its alrerady over stayed its welcome with its convoluted story and mish mash of not knowing wat system to be on. but meh. thats nomuras fault. ill still buy the games, just wont be as crazed into them as i used to

  • SetzerGabbiani

lol.  This game is going to sell a few 3DSs off of the ‘secret movie’ alone.  Or until someone uploads said movie to youtube.

    • I’m very sure RadicalDreamer will be the first to show it to us as he reviews this game.

  • Hopefully Square decides to translate this while they’re doing the Japanese dub and stuff like they’re doing with Final Fantasy XIII-2. I want this game ASAP!

  • Roanoke834

I would be more excited about the “even after Kingdom Hearts III” if I didn’t know that the wait would be filled with more random side stories and filler episode. Even though some of said side stories were pretty good, the thought of all that filler is semi-depressing.

  • DanteJones

At this rate my kids are gonna play KHIII at the age I was when I played I & II, and I don’t even HAVE kids yet.

    • FireCouch

      Who doesn’t like bonding experiences?

  • Enma_Kozato

Anything outside BBS, 1, and 2 I don’t bother with. The series is complicaiting itself, and I really don’t feel compelled enough to know each and every detail of all the powers at work. Sure, I bought ReCoded, but that was for the neighbor’s kid.

    • KyoyaHibari

Agreed, these spinoffs, remakes and ports are just getting out of control, like how many times has KH1 and CoM been released lol.

      • joesz

WHAT? you were already existing? That’s ridiculous!

      • 2. Omigod the horror.

        • KyoyaHibari

Well CoM is basically KH1 so KH1 + Com + Re:Com + 3D + Mobile and if you count Final Mix that’s like 6 versions of the same story.

          • 3D is a new story, so it doesn’t count towards the total. Final mix/Re:Com  are along the same lines as an Hd remaster, so those don’t count either. That leaves you with a very tentative 3, as, while the locales were more or less the same, the overall story for Com and Coded are different from one.

          • KyoyaHibari

Meh, w/e, I’ve only played the basic mothership titles (I believe) anyways which for me was basically just BBS, 1 & 2

    • Kingdom Hearts, II and Birth by Sleep are really the essential titles as far as storyline goes, though I think a certain character from 358/2 Days will make an appearance in Kingdom Hearts III.

To be honest, I loved the spin-offs. Square and h.a.n.d. worked some magic with the DS to keep the gameplay and general quality up to snuff. Re: coded being particularly impressive, borrowing elements from Birth by Sleep’s combat (which I consider the best game in the series period).

Also, their endings just killed me. The aforementioned character from 358/2 Days, and then when a particular trio was brought up in Re: coded. Thinking about the latter always gets to me! D:

Still, being the Square/Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts fanboy that I am, I’m still not sure about continuing the series after III. I think it’s fairly obvious what Kingdom Hearts III will entail, and that’s just going to be one of the biggest, most heart-wrenching endings in video game history. I think it’ll be a wonderful place to end the series all together.

    • Chain of Memories was cool and BBS is too, I wish they would remake 1 and 2 though, I want to play those and not fanfictiony type storylines in other games.

    • joesz

Oh crap! First Tsuna and now Enma…
I guess I’ll go with Hibari then.

      • D:! I just noticed that! Good to know the cast of KHR play video games and visit Silliconera.

        • KyoyaHibari

Well, We got me, Tsuna, Enma, Takeshi and I think I tried to make my account XANXUS but it was taken so I guess 5 of us ;P

          • Enma_Kozato

Why don’t we have a Gokudera yet?

          • Hah we need him.

          • KyoyaHibari

Lol I’m not even going to say anything on that ;P

      • KyoyaHibari

Haha yea right, I’ll bite you to death… hehe be Mukuro lol, we got Takeshi too

        • Yu_TheKing

In the flesh lol I so cant wait for this. Probably will get a 3ds just for this and  Ocarina of Time.

    • It’s magic. You don’t need to explain it 99% of the time.

But seriously, the whole message the series tries to convey in terms of continuity is “Just go with it. It’s not like you made any sense out of it before.”

    • Chain of Memories goes hand in hand with KH II, It bridges the gap between 1 and 2. So CoM was essential as will KH: DDD will bridge the gap between 2 and 3.

      • Enma_Kozato

I played CoM (I even bought the PS2 version) but I never finished it <:D Gotta love that card battle system.

But this is why we have wikis.

        • I didn’t even bother playing the Ps2 version since I already played the GBA version. Man I feel old. >_>

    • lostinblue

We’ll tbh, we know very little about this game, if you liked BBS then it should be treated as much as a wild card as BBS was. the scope seems to be very similar and I believe it’s done by the same team.

  • I thought Nomura said that BBS will be the end to the Xehanort series. Damn it, fella just won’t die.

    • MizuMikomi

Actually, he said Birth by Sleep would explain the origins of the Xehanort saga and fill in ‘some’ plot holes. Since it was announced at the same time as Coded and Days, with Coded being like KH 2.1 in terms of story relevance… I guess it makes a little sense… maybe.

It was pretty obvious that 2 wasn’t the end; although it should have been, so now he has two more games in line just to finish Xehanort off for good… sounds… fun?

  • I almost forgot that this game was coming to the 3DS, lack of software left my 3DS  alone

  • 3DS…. *Shakes fists* I promised myself I wouldn’t by one DX (said the same about  getting a ds and psp >_> and I have both) But now my wallet is extra tight so… I’ma just wait for the movies to show up on youtube while waiting for KH3 ;~;

Too many spin offs on too many systems for my taste >_< I do not have the money to buy all these systems just to play these game Square~ *looks at moths flying out of wallet* lol

  • OverlordFuka

Oh good God. Kingdom Hearts is going to be like Final Fantasy, we’ll have Kingdom Hearts XIII or something. I mean don’t get me wrong, I like this game, but…it’s hilarious how it still has the nerve to call itself a “trilogy” considering all the mandatory stuff you have to get to understand the plot. Oh well.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Geez… This game was announced at last year’s E3, wasn’t it? And they’re only 40-50% complete with it? Just what have they been doing to make this game?

    • MizuMikomi

For a Square Enix title… that’s pretty good.
I remember reading they started work on it in September, so ten months? Not bad, not bad at all.

Besides that, Re:Coded was revealed at last year’s E3 to have jsut been started on, and made it out in Japan around the end of the year, and hit shelves here in January.

So It’s not that hard to believe. Lol

      • lostinblue

Yeah, being a S-E Nomura game if anything it’s hard to believe it’s so complete at this point, specially if what they say about all-new areas is true.

  • xAKUM3TSUx

I’m confused here. I thought KH was over after 2…Or I guess I’m just stupid lol. But It’s good to hear theirs gonna be a 3. I never really liked KH that much but even I have to admit it has one of the most diverse stories/ characters / and gameplay mechanics i’ve seen. And it’s always pretty fun to play. Guess I gotta go pick up a 3DS.

  • PrinceHeir

hmm still why use sora once again??

why not new characters for a new arc???

can’t wait to see that secret movie(as every KH game)

though can’t believe it’s been 9 years now since the first game O___O

    time flies by O__O

    • MizuMikomi

Because Nomura made Kingdom Hearts with the idea that it’s “Sora’s story” even after three, he said no matter what he does Sora will be the main character.

The game play is what has me excited for 3D… insane parkour in my Kingdom Hearts game? Sign me up!

      And I know right?
I just replayed through KH and KHII Final Mix a while back, and I couldn’t believe how long it’s been since it all started.

      • PrinceHeir

my comment was removed wtf?!?! “-___-

still having a new character would be nice though.

oh well we still have Versus XIII to look forward to so yeah :P

  • I’m looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III simply so people will stop asking for it. I know it’s been a long time, but it kills me to see people begging for it, overlooking both Birth by Sleep and the fact that the story wasn’t set up for Kingdom Hearts III.

For all intents and purposes, Birth by Sleep was Kingdom Hearts III without the “III” part. Just as Kingdom Heart’s secret ending was Kingdom Hearts II (though, at the time only a concept), Kingdom Hearts II’s secret ending was Birth by Sleep. It was originally in development for the PlayStation 2, but later moved to the PSP, where it was ignored by so many, simply because of the platform.

Somewhat funny considering II’s secret movie was labeled “Kingdom Hearts III” on YouTube and drooled over for years.

I mean, people that have played Birth by Sleep know how essential it is to the series. Where Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II dealt mostly with Sora, Rikku, Kairi and then those connected to Organization XIII, Birth by Sleep disclosed details on the overarching storyline for the first time. Really, before Birth by Sleep, we knew absolutely nothing, and yet people still demand III despite the fact that it would have made no sense whatsoever up until this point!

Sorry for the semi-rant, but it’s so frustrating! D:

    • DanteJones

I want KHIII pretty badly, but I did play BBS at least (which was amazing story/gameplay-wise, and massive <3 Aqua). XD Was 358 days and re:coded worth picking up? I was kind of interested in those, but was more excited over BBS.

      • I’d say they’re mostly for diehard fans. Their roles in the grand scheme of things seems fairly minor, so probably not very appealing to the more casual Kingdom Hearts fan, but I’m the former and enjoyed ’em quite a bit.

Gameplay is fun, and certain aspects of their stories are wonderful (the endings, really) but there aren’t any new worlds and it’s basically trekking through various scenarios from previous games, similar to Chain of Memories.

      • Bakuryukun

imo 358 is easily the worst game in the franchise. There are good parts about it, but for the most part it was extremely forgettable from both a story AND gameplay perspective. They could have done a LOT more with Roxas’ story but instead they opt to just have him be awkward on a clock tower with ice cream for a year minus 7 days.

        • RablaAndrews

          No, that’d be coded.

At least Days added to the overall story AND backstory, PLUS a look at the other side of the arc over CoM and II.

Coded on the other hand was 3 hours of minigames and then they stuck the 2 minutes of plot onto the closing sequence, plus another bit in the secret ending.

          • Um, The Fallen? Those are definitely gonna make a return.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Now 2 things confuse me the most: 1) to understand the whole KH story (so far) you need 5 different pieces of hardware. WTF SE?! Pick one and stay there. This constant jumping is not healthy for one’s wallet. Not in these times. 2) I understand how important BBS is to the story, but that pretty much wrapped up all the loose questions up until this point. What is BBS vol. 2 supposed to do? Is there really a point for this game or is this just a cash-in attempt since BBS was a very well made game? It’s not like there have been any huge events between BBS and KH1. Everything was just being set up for future plans. These continual spin-offs are really hurting the overall story flow, imo.

      • Well, Square could do a Kingdom Hearts HD collection consisting of Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II and then Birth by Sleep as a PSP Remaster, catching just about everyone up to speed on essential story information.

Couldn’t say about Birth by Sleep -Volume Two-, though it may not actually take place between BbS and Kingdom Hearts. I don’t want to go into details, because they may spoil BbS for folks (I don’t think there are any spoiler tags here?).

Let’s just say that Birth by Sleep’s secret ending takes place post-Kingdom Hearts II, as does Final Mix’s Secret Episode (in which Volume Two is revealed). Multiple characters are shown in their Kingdom Hearts II outfits and so on, so I think BbS -Volume Two- might actually be closer to Dream Drop Distance chronologically.

        • HarryHodd

Nah they wouldn’t want to please thier fans.

    • Syltique

I completely agree.  KH fans have literally nothing to complain about.  BBS just came out recently, and it was a full prequel.

      • Full prequel indeed. Birth By Sleep is my FAVORITE Kingdom Hearts.

At least KH fans know the series is continuing on. I’ve been waiting 10 years for a Skies of Arcadia sequel/remake that will never happen.

  • I’m also looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III. Nomura did say he wanted to continue the series. But after Xehanort’s inevitable demise, how will the story continue itself? And are people going to even buy KH after III? That’s what bugs me.

Also why still Sora? Why not add another protagonist…

Then again KH will end up like Final Fantasy if did they that. I say keep Sora and Riku and add another Keyblade wielder.

Also Lexaus_the_Alchemist made two valid points: Consoles and BbS vol2.

I can kind of understand why put KH on different platforms. Budgeting and to try out the latest hardware. But was it really necessary? And with BbS vol. 2. I understand the need for that too. But another game? Why not make it an exclusive movie of something explaining Vol. 2?!

Err. Sorry about the mini rant. Just had to let be known.

But stil looking forward to both Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance and KH III.

    • There’s only one place for Sora to go after Xehanotrt is defeated: high school!

Ignoring the fact that he’s already 16-years-old at the latest point in series chronology, they’ll find a way. Think of all the teen angst and drama!

      • XD lmao!! Now that is a place that even Sora be afraid!

    • KHSoraKeyBlade

I will buy a KH game after III. I’m not sure how the story will continue, unless they go and say it wasn’t Xehanort at all it was merely someone else! …. That would be a stupid point to follow though xD
As for Sora being still the main character, I don’t mind. We’ve only got to play as him properly so far in KH1, CoM and KH2. He wasn’t playable in BbS, Days (only has a secret unlock in mission mode but still) and well Re:coded was him but it wasn’t him…

Either way I can’t wait for both KHIII and Dream Drop Distance (and whatever falls upon that BbS Vol2)

  • kidhyuga

Just to clarify this does not say Kingdom Hearts III will be for 3DS. Some of you gotta read more thoroughly.

  • Judging by the thumbnail of this article, Xehanort is not too happy about his upcoming last game appearance.

  • Xeahnort

Square-Enix should realize that people want a proper sequel and no more KH fillers

    • SolNeko

these fillers are definately not needed, they are irritating and make the story even more confusing, the worst problem i would say is that theyre all on different consoles and portables and i simply cant buy them all to follow the story T_T

      • doomspeller10

I agree with you on the console part, I only have a PS2 and a PSP so I’m already missing on some of the games. On the other hand, most console owners (and all console makers) like to have some good exclusives. SE rarely fails at exploiting the high points of a platform, so it’s kinda inevitable.

    • We just got a proper prequel last year.

      As for Dream Drop Distance:

-A story on par with that of the numbered titles (just like Birth by Sleep)
-Latest title in Kingdom Hearts chronology
      -Revolves around Sora and Riku
-Every Disney world featured in the game will be brand new

      That’s a proper sequel.

    • darkfox1

No such thing as Kingdom Hearts Filler.

  • Nomura always manages to give us so little and yet so much at the same time with these tidbits of information on his upcoming games.

I’m still stocked for this game, and BBS Volume 2, but it seems that both are suffering the “Versus” syndrom right now, given that we haven’t got any news on both in quite a long time, and everytime we do, it’s something that really doesn’t reveal anything juicy at all :/

  • SirRichard

“This story will be mysterious and quite difficult to understand.”

This kind of summarises the whole series, really.

And hey, if Kingdom Hearts III hits the PS3, look at it like this; we can just import the inevitable super ultra magical incredibly advanced international-but-not-really edition.

  • I’m all excited for KH3/3d/etc, but I feel the statement would be more meaningful if the time between actually playing as Sora weren’t so far and few between.

  • AzureNova

For the love of God, please focus on the PS3!

  • IB2004

Finally some news even though its about that sob xehanort

  • Lord Highawesomeparty

So the series will continue after III then? I could have sworn I read an interview saying it was supposed to be the last.

I can’t wait to play as Sora again, I just hope this game has more Disney than 358/2 Days and Birth By Sleep. They were both okay but they didn’t feel like Kingdom Hearts.

By the way, could anyone lay upon my uninformed eyes what Birth By Sleep Volume 2 is? I checked the Kingdom Hearts wiki and found nothing.

    • lostinblue

This is square-enix of the thousand FF games, it will never end. never.

    • BTA

Birth By Sleep Volume 2 was hinted at in the ending video of Birth By Sleep. I think that’s all we know about it at the moment.

  • Herok

people the story isnt as hard to follow as you think it is your just not thinking enough to put it all together, also i dont mind having to own only 3 systems to play them all so far you just need a dirt cheap ps2 for 1,2, (chain of memorys if you get the ps2 one) ds for CoM (gba), 358/2, and recoded (only 1 i didnt play) then psp for BbS. then if you choose 3ds for DDD.

    • Lord Highawesomeparty

PS2, PSP, DS (or GBA), 3DS
Four to five systems, not 3. You could also coun the Japanese mobile phone games as well.

      • Herok

well i was saying you can choose 3 systems min because ps2 has 3 of the games, so you dont need a gba,  you can buy a 3ds for DDD, and play the ds ones because its backwards compatable with the ds games and then the psp for BbS. so yeah you only need those 3 systems to play all the games, here it is  in list form

        PS2-KH,KHII, and KH CoM
        3DS- KH 358/2, KH reCoded, and KH:DDD

    • lostinblue

It’s not so much as “hard” to follow, but ridiculous. The plot is getting ridiculous (and I’m not saying it is ridiculous already out of respect for people still enjoying it, I guess)

  • you might as well stick part 3 on the xbox too.  Why don’t they just leave it on playstation?

    • Lord Highawesomeparty

It’s easier to make money when you put a franchise on more – and better selling – platforms.

    • lostinblue

Hm? By the sound of it it’s not even in development.

Who knows where it’ll come out and when.

  • ninjaonizuka

  • Elemiel

I’ll probably be in my first year in college by the time KH3 comes out. XD
But as long as I get DDD, that’ll be okay.

  • HarryHodd

Don’t understand why anyone is even talking about Kingdom Hearts 3. It hasn’t been announced and even if was would be years away.

  • ZBaksh386

At least we got some news.
I hope that between KH3 and the next game, there is some sort of time skip where sora and the others are older like 18-20 so they can have some time for peace and so i could feel that they have grown and wont always be fifteen.
As for the series after 3, i will wait and see what they try and judge it then because there are alot of things they can do after xehanort is gone.

  • Kuza21

KH1 came out when I was 12. KH2 came out when I was 15. Now I’m 21 and I won’t be seeing KH3 anytime soon? Sigh* BBS was good but come on!

    • lostinblue

Enter Nomura, we’ll be old before the twists are coming to an end.

  • Xekyo

oh how i’ve missed kingdom hearts on the playstation consoles.  Kingdom Hearts I & II remastered in HD please for the ps3? :)   lol

  • Dimentionalist

Screw HD! KHIII for mobile phones. Believe!

  • Thiefofhearts

So here’s a question I see rarely asked: Why all the lame “side stories” that mostly reuse old resources and not an actual part 3?

It’s starting to get like Duke Nukem Forever, except the game has never been officially announced, merely teased to fans.

  • PrinceHeir

cool though i still kinda wanted a new character for the new arc.
