CyberConnect2’s CEO Would Be Happy To Work On Mega Man Legends 3

By Spencer . July 22, 2011 . 9:02am

megamanlCapcom partnered with Solatorobo creator and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja developer CyberConnect2 to create Asura’s Wrath. It’s a brand new intellectual property where you play as an enraged demigod who gets beat down by planet-sized bosses before turning the fight around with a dramatic comeback.

Asura’s Wrath will be CyberConnect2’s first Capcom published title when it comes out next year. Curious to see what the future could hold and since Capcom lets external developers work on established franchises, I asked Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO and President of CyberConnect2, what Capcom series would he like to develop.

"It would be Mega Man Legends 3," exclaimed Matsuyama in a Siliconera interview. "I really like the series!" Just this week Capcom canceled the Mega Man Legends 3 project for Nintendo 3DS where fans collaborated with the development staff on creating a sequel. Matsuyama said he was disappointed by that announcement. CyberConnect2’s work on Solatorobo and Tail Concerto could be a foundation for a Mega Man Legends sequel too. Would any fans "green light" a Mega Man Legends game from the Fukuoka based developer?

  • Phoenix_Apollo

I don’t care who makes it. I really want to play this game. :(

I’m curious how Capcom reacts to this.

    • axess707

I might jinx it but Capcom might cancel Asura’s Wrath if they found out about this.

      • Phoenix_Apollo

I’d love to see them try. I think there’s a point where even THEY know that too much negative press is too much.

  • You can do it CC2!! “You Have The Power!!!” You are the masters of the Universe after all!!

  • M’iau M’iaut

Would any fans “green light” a Mega Man Legendsgame from the Fukuoka based developer…..

Hmmmm my Magic 8 Ball says “likely to probably, even perhaps you better d*mn well believe it”

  • Genjo

good to see CyberConnect2 CEO/Presidents Hiroshi Matsuyama showing interest in MML3 so there’s hope for future of Mega man Legends! *cheers*

  • Anyone who is willing to work on MML3 is good enough for me!

  • We have a group on facebook that is trying to rally fans and get this project going again. Please check it out!

    • godmars

How about doing one better and jumping this? Put fan support directly behind this idea.

  • You bet I would. With Inafune gone I’d love to see the game resurrected and placed in the hands of a fan.

  • malek86

At this point, I think the fans would green light anything.

PS. what’s up with the Lego dudes in the image?

    • DanteJones

They’re serve-bots! Loyal servants of the Bonne’s, even if they’re forced to run a torture track every now and then.

    •  Prinnies of the Mega Man Legends universe :D

Though technically, I guess Prinnies are the Serv-bots of the Disgaea universe…

      • M’iau M’iaut

Well they both have complete and undying love for their masters! Just ask a prinny or servbot any time the master is around.

    • Let’s just say they’re the Prinnies of Megaman Legends. :)

    • mikanko

1 nsfw word is used by the commentator, but it’s still kinda funny and the first thing I think of when the topic of servbots comes up.

    • You really need to play “The Misadventures of Tron Bonne” to learn more about these adorable fellows.

    • They’re Servbots, Trone Bonne’s loyal Minions. (If you’ve watched Despicable Me, the capitalization is a hint.)

  • No wonder with the pride they take in Tail Concerto and Solatorobo, they share many similarities with the Legends games.

I’d support such a project without any hesitation. But less hand holding than in Solatorobo please.

Guys, please get Solatorobo if you like MML games.

    • godmars

I need to get a DS first.

BTW: I’m getting a DS, pretty much just for that game.

      • You’re one of the good guys. Get Elebits: Adventures of Kai & Zero too while you’re at it. It’s dirt cheap by now.

  • The video game industry…where canceled projects mean other companies are always willing to take up the plans, if only the movie industry worked this way.

    • They just did actually. The Uncharted movie director has been switched with one who wishes to change the premise of the story and bringing it close to the game itself.

  • DanteJones

    My light has been greenified!

  • axess707

Matsuyama-san, if ever you’re reading this, we’d like to have you join us in this page:

Or at least help us spread the word if you don’t have a Facebook account.

Anyone else interested is also welcome. We’re already affiliates with Operation Rainfall BTW.

  • Vyrhn

i would be glad if CC2 really work on MML3, but i would rather have it on vita/psp since 3ds is region-locked.

  • Thomas Maloney

Any enemy of Capcom is a friend of mine.

At least someone wants to give the fans what they want.

    • But they aren’t enemies…they work together dude~

      • Thomas Maloney

enemy of their horrible decision <3

  • I always loved CyberConnect and always will gotta love their dedication just have to wish for others to send theirs overseas.

  • shion16

    Piros is my hero <3

  • I’d greenlight the f**k out of that.

  • axess707

Matsuyama-san should be given the most prestigious award the internet can give.

    “Matsuyama-san is a bro.”

  • Let it be so.  Capcom won’t lose any money, what do they have to lose?

    • Exkaiser

Actually, they’d still be paying for it because they’d be publishing it. CyberConnect2 would be developing it, as they are developing Asura’s Wrath.

  • Absolutely. This game needs to get out.

  • I’ll support this.

  • joesz

I like Hiroshi, I love him.

  • Hell yes I would support this, anything that can get this game into gamers’ hands is a-okay with me.

  • The makers of Dot Hack working on Legends 3?

My body would never be ready.

  • wakaki2d

“It’s a brand new intellectual property where you play as an enraged demigod who gets beat down by planet-sized bosses before turning the fight around with a dramatic comeback.”

So basically you know nothing about this game except what you saw in the trailer. Your describing the trailer not the game.

    • Actually I know quite a bit about Asura’s Wrath and we’ll be sharing information you haven’t heard before soon. This post is about Mega Man Legends 3 though so that’s why there’s was a short summary :P

  • O_O do it do it do it…and join our cause in bring Megman Legends 3 back!

  • I green light it 100% but it would be nice to see it on something other than 3ds

  • I’d be behind this 100% I loved CC2’s  work on the .hack series and I’ve love to see them release MML3

  • Would any fans “green light” a Mega Man Legendsgame from the Fukuoka based developer?
Of coarse I can’t speak for everyone, but I believe a large margin of people would be totally 100% behind this, “green light” please!

  • J Something

I would love to see it happen, but I wonder. Would they pick up where the Devroom left off, or start everything anew?

  • XypherCode

.hack games are few of my favorites by CyberConnect2! I’ll back them up 100% on this!

  • Capcom, you know your game would’ve been a hit when other developers were rooting for it.  :P

I approve.  CC2, fight for great justice!

  • I’m ok with this.

    …DO IT!

  • FUND IT!!!

  • When god close a door he opens a window oh cyberconnect I Love ya.

  • BelmontHeir

    Best CEO ever.

    • theworldofnoboundries

Of course he is the best! He is PIROS!!!

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I would approve, but what happens to the dev team who was originally working on it? It would be sad to see the game they wanted to make being made by someone else even if it was to their expectations… It wouldn’t be the same… however I shouldn’t complain because it’s probably get the game or not…

    • I’d like to think that they’d be excited to see the game release, rather than rot in Capcom’s vault for another decade. It seemed like the Legends 3 team was excited about the game, it’d be a shame for that work to waste away.

  • SolNeko

  • Yes, holy crap, YES! Do it! Do it! Do it! I would buy three copies. I swear I would.

  • Someone who actually cares! Please do it!

  • If CyberConnect2 manages to do this, I WILL IMMEDIATELY BUY ASURA’S WRATH!!! DO THIS CAPCOM!

  • What’re you waiting for, Capcom. Approve this now. CC2 is one of my top 2 favorite developers, so for them to express interest in this feels like some sort of dream or something. Day 0 for me, if I could ever scrounge up the zenny for it.

  • YES and they would make it WORK

************ DO NOT INVOLVE THE FANS ************

  • Over the top action in a Mega Man game? Me gusta. Fund it.

  • XypherCode

I really appreciate CC2’s work and desire to make MML3 but they really should make a new .hack game soon…preferably on home consoles :D

anyway I hope ‘something’ happens with Capcom and CC2 concerning MML3 ^^

  • 2003 – Capcom cancels Red Dead Revolver. Rockstar Games jumps in and finishes the game.
    2011 – Capcom cancels Mega Man Legends 2. CC2 jumps in and…?

(ignore that Rockstar’s version was heavily modified)

    • puchinri

Was that really the case? I didn’t know. That makes me a little more hopeful that they’d let CC2 take on MML3~.

    • Zero_Destiny

Didn’t Capcom give the Red Dead IP to Rockstar because when Rockstar wanted to sell Grand Theft Auto in Japan they were afraid sales from an unknown (to the general Japanese public not hardcore gamers and what have you) American Company wouldn’t sell well and thus had Capcom publish the games for them.

So that’s more of a trade off. Capcom kinda gave them the IP. It’s a really different situation then this. Capcom isn’t so much making deals with CyberConnect2 or anything like that.

      • PrinceHeir

woah didn’t know capcom originally developed Red Dead Revolver before O____O

        the more you know :)

  • I’ll buy Asura’s Wrath is this comes to pass. I’m always for supporting developers and not corporate jerks

  • Kitestwinblades

I second both notions! Make another .hack- Online play please! Dont let WKC Take all the online JRPG glory, you guys can do so much better. CC2 making Megaman almost sounds like fate!  A dream come true

  • RagnaXBL

    In Your Face Capcom!

  • dragoon_slayer12

II hope capcom allows them to. With them developing it, cappy’s fear of profit loss would be lesser than if they were to do everything

    • Skua

Is there any difference? It’d be one thing if CyberConnect2 (or another company) were willing to step in and pay for development.

However, there’s no suggestion that this is the case. I’d assume that if a deal were to be negotiated, they’d go with a traditional publisher/developer arrangement, with the publisher footing the bill and the developer delivering the goods on the alotted budget. In that sense, their interest in making MML3 would be little different than the interest of the former team (or anyone else, for that matter).

      • dragoon_slayer12

My business ideals may not be published correct, but I thought the publishers on responsibility was to take care of the marketing and distribution, and if the publisher was nice enough, help with the cost of development. I could be wrong, and if I am, they would still save money cuz they can they use their now free team to do other projects while another developer takes care of legends 3

        • Skua

The typical arrangement has the publisher paying for development, with advances dished out on the completion of milestones. Before a studio makes any money, they’re required to pay back that investment through their royalty stream. In that regard, most developers have no excess cash on hand unless they produce a huge hit.

Some influential, well-off studios (i.e. Valve, Epic Games, id Software before they were acquired by Zenimax) can afford to pay for development, own their IP, and thus negotiate much higher royalty rates. However, the majority of independent studios live from one contract to the next. If they can’t land new projects with publishers, they have no way of meeting payroll.

  • aoihana

Think: Awesome Cell Shaded graphics in Mega Man Legends 3…not…too…bad ^^

  • I like CC2 so I”m fine with this.  Do it please!

  • haqua

Oh God, CyberConnect? If they do it I’ll HAVE to buy it…
…I’ve never played a MegaMan game before.

  • Alexis Matthews

Well this is delightful news! See? I knew something good will happen to Mega Man eventually to keep the spirits up! All we had to do was wait! Now, we shall wait some more until they finish (IF they make it, and hope Capcom doesn’t cancel this, too, or I’ll be mad, not furious, but mad…..and disappointed).  :)

  • Yes! Please CC2! If Crapcom wont do it then maybe you guys can help out! Too many fans wont this game to be ignored!

  • RagnaXBL
  • Wow. You don’t know how much this has calmed me down. I was one irritated ranting rambler, but now I’m one happy go-lucky gofer! I shall be waiting for more news! :)

  • So, Solatorobo’s creators would be willing to finish what the Devroom started, eh? At this point, it can only be a good thing. I sincerely hope that they’ll be able to take what’s already there and make the best out of it. Heck, if Legends 3 does well, maybe Capcom could approach them to do more with Megaman…

I do hope that, if we won’t be involved with the game’s development anymore, CC2 would be willing to keep us all posted on the game’s progress.

  • cmurph666

I hate this generation CRAPCOM… but if they allow CyberConnect2 to finish MML3 all is forgiven.

  • epy

CC2 would most likely make a better MML game that Capcom could ever make. But Crapcom (did I get it right?) being their lovely selves, I see them allowing this unlikely.

  • kevinposta

As unlikely as this is probably, I’m overflowing with happiness to know there’s a chance MML3 gets revived!

  • puchinri

I think I would really, actually want the game if CC2 worked on it! (Would they have to stick with the designs or any of the work Capcom did so far though?)

  • As long as someone competent made this game, I would buy this.

  • SetzerGabbiani

The feasibility is strong.  Cyberconnect 2 could be the developer that takes care of Capcom’s niche titles.  Since many of the assets for MML 3 already exist, I don’t think it would be a stretch.

  • OMG

If this happen it would be the BEST..

    Do it already..

  • YES!!!

  • d19xx

Make it a PSP and 3DS title and we have a winner. :D

  • oh god yesssssssss cyberconnect2 you the best

  • Piro-Piro-PIROSHI-SAN!!
If you do this, you’ll be a Hero in the real world!

  • neogeno

I trust CyberConnect2 could make a pretty badass game with it if they were well informed of the Mega Man ethos. And judging by Matsuyama’s reply it looks like he already is. CC2 really knows how to make a good presentation with their games.

(I’d also love to see this on PSP if possible)

  • I would definitely accept a Mega Man Legends 3 made by CyberConnect2. I actually played the original Mega Man Legends games and Tail Concerto around the same time in my youth, so seeing Solatorobo made me very happy too. I just hope the original devs can somehow collaborate with CC2, if this unlikely wish ever manages to bear fruit. I had a lot of fun reading the MML3 Devroom blog entries and it would be a shame for them to be left out of what they helped start.

  • TrevHead

Has that Korean MMO Rockman Online been canned? if so its obvious Capcom wants nothing to do with the IP and its creator

  • brandonfretz92

  • JAron Szpindel

  • Just make it happen :´(

  • Code

rar, you know what, I’d be completely okay with this. Get this man a line with Capcom stat >w<' You know honestly I could see it being a really good fit too given the nature of CyberConnect2's games.

  • I think fans will be more than delighted to see this project worked on by CyberConnect 2. From what I’ve played and seen from their games, It’ll be a good idea. You’ve got a great foundation set from released videos of MML3, and good experience with a few gameplay styles. I’m sure CC2 will make this game a great one, if they get the chance to continue MML3.

                 before Roll takes them all.

  • No freakin’ way! I JUST thought about this today! When someone on the “100,000 fans for Mega Man Legend 3” facebook page mentioned CC2 and Asura’s Wrath. I thought, “You know…maybe, at the end of this all, we’ll get a HD console version of Mega Man Legends 3. Like how Capcom didn’t do anything with Street Fighter IV or Bionic Commando until they found a developer partner willing to give it the grand, well budgeted, well produced console entry it deserves”.

And when I saw Asura’s Wrath, I thought to myself that CC2 would be PERFECT to do it. They’re super talented – both Asura’s Wrath and the Naruto Ultimate games are GORGEOUS HD era games with fun, intuitive combat that looks unbelievably cool and intense – and also have the RPG background from .hack and Tail Concerto/Solatorobo. (a game that’s pretty similar in tone to Mega Man Legends). They also know a thing or two about working on a game that no publisher really supports, since I hear Solatorobo was a labor of love they did in spite of publishers saying, “Nah-uh; that won’t sell”.

If the 3DS version of Mega Man Legend 3 is indeed, truly dead, than that sucks. But if Capcom goes to CyberConnect 2 and says, “Here. You guys are in charge of the Blue Bomber. We want a huge, important, console release to come out of this. Re-establish Mega Man. Make a world class action game…or make a action-RPG Mega Man Legends 3. Your Call” I would flip my sh*t.

I am DEFINITELY for a CyberConnect 2 developed Mega Man title. If I were Capcom right now, I’d definitely be starting to think about what developer you could partner with to make a new Mega Man game. And, honestly, I’d be hard pressed to think of a studio better than CyberConnect 2.

I never thought I’d actually hear CC2 say it though. Well, since the thought occurred to me earlier today (freaky!). I really hope Matsuyama starts rallying for the job over there in Japan. I would DEFINITELY support that!!!

    • theworldofnoboundries

Well from all the game from CC2 that i have played i have yet been disappointed so i said: MAKE THIS HAPPEN!. As this move will of course good for Nintendo hardware selling and also good for CC2’s name and lastly this move is one hundread percent profit for Capcom as they only need to sell the IP.

  • CC2とロックマンDASH3はすばらしすぎるアイデアだ!ドットハックとテイルコンセルトの作る人がロックマンDASH3を作って発売してはずっと幸せになる!

CC2 and Rockman DASH 3 is a more than amazing idea! The people who made .Hack// and Tail Concerto working to build Rockman DASH 3 and sell it would make me extremely happy!

  • I f***ing approve of this message. I want this to happen.

  • ::raises 20 dollar bill::

I can make it rain if I have too!

  • Judo

If Capcom is’t interested in the franchise anymore…I’m more than willing to buy it myself!

  • theworldofnoboundries

If only all other developer is as great as this Piros-shi. I believe we as gamers have been much happier with the game we get.

  • WilliamJasper

Haha! Sucks for you, Crapcom! Now don’t ruin this for us or I really think you guys will be sorry…
    *Equips Rocket Launcher*

  • Wow, it would be really great is capcom would allow cyberConncet2 to keep the game going. I’m sure they would do just a good a job as capcom, and at the very least we would get the game we’ve been to desparately yearning for. Let’s hope we’re not just clutching at straws here… ^_^

  • I would approve, CC2. Get on it.

  • If they intended to keep taking it in the same direction that capcom had (minus the cancellation of course) I would be more than happy to see them take it over.  Continuing the devroom in that case might be impossible but I think that is an acceptable loss if absolutely necessary.  There were many things that the fans helped create that are absolutely awesome don’t get me wrong, but there is also a ton of content we had no say in that was absolutely awesome as well and was created by the devteam alone.

  • Eugene Goh

I dont care who develops it.
    Get it done.

    pretty please?

  • I’ve lost alot of hope in Capcom when they canceled this long awaited project
I’ve long awaited for a sequel to the Megaman Legend series more than anything.
Please make it worth the wait and worth getting a 3DS.
    All and all I approve

  • I think that would be awesome
If people can accept that Luigi’s Mansion 2 is developed by a Canadian developer (Next Level Games) then sure they can accept MML3 being developed the people who brought us Waffle Ryebread

Though promoting it would be a bitch due to the “core gamer” crowd that are the judge, jury and executioner of video games here in the US, Maybe throw in a playable Black Gangster character in there just to make the game even more appealing to the american “core gamer” crowd

  • All of my frys AND spongebobs.

  • PsychedelicWolf

Frankly, not only am I convinced that CyberConnect2 could do it, but after Solatoobo I am -completely convinced- that they are the perfect people for the job. I played and loved the hell out of both Tail Concerto and Solatorobo, and one thing that occurred to me is how very MML-ish they are. And that’s a good thing to think about any game. I really think that they could do MML3 justice, but more than that, they could create the best MML game to date. These are the guys for the job. Listen to them, Capcom. :| Please?

  • Truth be told, I’m not even a big Mega Man fan. I just didn’t like how they
said they were gonna make it, got many fans involved, then suddenly give up. It’s also one of the only reasons why I gotten a 3DS (other than Dead or Alive and Zelda), because it looked so cool and I thought for sure Crapcom was gonna finish (seeing as how many people were involved). I don’t care who develops it. As long as they take their time, and maybe release some more screenshots or videos to see how people react I guess, then everybody (or at least some to most people) is happy, right? So here’s to them completing the game (if they make it), people still supporting the game, trying their best, and hoping that it sells well! Good luck to everyone!

  • nigra nigra

Let’s just hope CC2 is smart enough to get this on a real console instead of that gimmick known as the 3DS.

    • Playstation would make a better home for Legends 3, but many Mega Man games are on Nintendo handhelds…

      • nigra nigra

Who cares if the other ones were? The Vita would fit Legends in much better than the 3DS. The console has daul analog sticks, inexpensive dev kits, a much larger screen than the 3DS, and it doesn’t rely on gimmicks.

Don’t forget the processors, they’ll help the game as well.

        • You accuse of the 3DS of relying on gimmicks, but you are forgetting they may put control gimmicks with the Vita’s touch and gyro just the same. >_>;

        • xflame10

you really have a problem with nintendo huh, buddy. Have you ever even played a 3ds long enough to call the 3d nothing more than a gimmick, and i’m 100% sure you’ve never even touched a vita so how would you know whether it would be a better fit for the series or not?

        • xflame10

but ya know i don’t wanna start an argument over this, so why don’t we just say that the game should be cross-platform.

        • Nyron

The 3DS kinda sucks, but the Vita’s no better. It’s literally made of gimmicks. Like, dozens of them.

  • I don’t know much about this company, but it would be nice to see MML3 get finished. We are in desperate need of some good 3DS games like this (since the good ones keep getting cancelled by companies who could give less of a crap about Nintendo) so… Capcom better let them develop it, if they really do not want to anymore.

  • If you bring it back, PLEASE either put it on Playstation Vita, or PSN/XboxLive.

The 3DS is just about Dead in the water.

    • People think a bad launch means the platform won’t recover. >_>;
Maybe if they released that prototype it might of done fine, never know now.
Vita is going to be just as fresh once it launches, never know how the market will treat the handheld either.

      • Thomas Maloney

        3DS is the new PS3.

        The 3DS has NO GAMES……..

…….and then it will boost in popularity if and when people stop canceling games for it and actually get a decent lineup going for the system.

    • qwertman

I agree. As soon as it was canceled I lost all reason to buy a 3DS. The Vita on the other hand looks super slick, and has quite a few promising launch titles.

  • Considering their work on Tail Concerto and Solatorobo, I feel like Cyber Connect 2 would be perfect for MML3. After it, seems Capcom doesn’t want to give the fans what they want.

  • YsyDoesIt

I think I’m going to have to issue my opinion with a resounding…

  • YES!

  • YESS!!!

  • It would be AW-AW-awesomee !! :)

  • Kitestwinblades

If this works out, I will forever remember this article as the day CC2 Saved The World.

  • Not such a bad thing to say but also puts Capcom in some risk if they ever decide to push through. I’m more inclined to say, I’d be very happy if this happens (megaman legends 3).

  • Don’t fucking gripe and groan about little details if it ever comes out.

  • Alex Theisen

    I would support it!
