Shinji Mikami Creating Survival Horror Game With Bethesda Softworks

By Spencer . April 24, 2012 . 8:12pm

Shinji Mikami, director of God Hand and Resident Evil 4, is returning to his roots. His studio Tango Gameworks is working on a game codenamed "Zwei," which Famitsu announced is a survival horror title.

Tango Gameworks is a subsidiary of Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media. Bethesda Softworks will work with Tango on developing their survival horror game.

It was awhile ago, but we noticed some creepy sketches on Tango Gameworks’ blog. Perhaps these posts are early concept art?

Whatever games Bathesda make you can be sure you will find more bugs in it then you would find in a nest of ants

  • brian yep

I thought the end of that first sentence was “returning to his robots” at first.
    I clearly need sleep. o3o

  • Sequel will be called Drei and the future prequel will be Eins.

    There called it.

How about Zwei II? That’s what Falcom did… lol

  • Meh. Big companies are incapable of making Survival Horror games.

All they do is make ooga-booga-booga simulators.

    • mat kuria

Yes cause Resident evil 1, 2..etc weren’t made by a big company..Capcom can’t be big.

    • I don’t know about that, but I will admit that most of the blockbuster survival horror games nowadays are ooga-booga-booga factories.

SH Downpour is awesome, but I shouldn’t feel safer in the “other” world.

  • shinji and bethseda? now that was something i really didn’t see coming. why bethseda though?makes me wonder, is this going to be an open world affair…interesting

    • Simple, they want the ultimate horror game.

Mikami is good at horror in terms of gameplay and atmosphere, and Bethesda is good at horror in the form of glitches, bugs, and freezing.

Put them together, and you’re going to experience true horror.

      • can you just picture the warning screen ? WARNING this game contains scenes of explicit violence and bugs. best played with the lights off and latest patched installed :)

    > mikami
    > survival horror

I cried a tear of joy.

  • What’s up with Japan and all these german titles? First Steins Gate, then
    Weiß Kreuz  and now this!?

    • boundries_san

….. U should try looking for LoGH anime. Almost all the char there is German races.

And Japan people has always had a special feeling with German culture. It is not  suprising anymore here.

      • XiaomuArisu

Like the fate stay night spells! schießen! erschießen!
I heard the japanese like german because its sounds strong to them.

  • Yay! Demand more survival horror! I don’t want to sleep. I want to be awake forever, so I can play more vidya games!

On a more serious note, I wonder if it’s really “survival horror” or the “dramatic horror” that more and more horror games are becoming. I guess I wouldn’t really mind if it’s well done, but I ultimately would prefer a nice atmospheric survival horror.

  • OMG open world horror!! I hope… pl0x make it happen!

  • badmoogle

Lets hope it’s not another shooter and it’s an actual survival horror game.

  • boundries_san

Survivor horror? By Mikami? My tears is going to run down here.^^

Who is helping him here?…. Bethesda?….. Ohh man pliz no more stupid glitch everywhere here even thought their open world system is top notch.

Damn this is like Positive aspect+Unknown aspect=Unknown quality.

As long as Bethy isn’t developing it; we can hope for a non-buggy experience.

If this is a multiplatform game, expect it to be horrible for the PS3. Because; as we know, Bethesda still has no idea how to make games for the PS3 yet.

      • boundries_san

*facepalm* I thought here i wanted to buy PS3 version. Well going to see whether they are going to see which platform they are going to come for.

  • pockystix

I’d actually like to see him make an open-world beat-em up like Godhand

Imagine dragon kicking someone and finding their corpse several miles away~

    I’m definitely a jRPG fan.

But I can’t deny that Bethesda has a lot of horsepower, err, humanpower, I guess,  that I certainly wouldn’t mind in my Japanese games.

They make rather buggy games. But at the very least, they seem to be the type capable of making really big landscapes. Just about any company could put them to use in terms of raw landscape power they seem to put out.

Also, the Survival Horror genre has been kind of slumping lately. Not only in quality, but certainly in sales. There are a lot of people out there, somehow, that will buy anything that Besthesda softworks puts out. That kind of name power, will be certain to make the game sell. Something the Survival Horror genre needs right now.

I’m actually not a major Godhand fan(at the very least, thematically and aesthetically, it’s not to my tastes. I’m far more fond of, say, Okami). But I recognize it as the quality game that it is, and overlooked. And I’m aware of what Bethesda is capable of.

I don’t expect everything of this project, but I do like survival horror games sometimes, especially the Fatal Frame series. I’m hoping they can kick some life into another genre that isn’t doing so well right now.

Hopefully it’ll be in 3rd-person perspective and avoid open-world and sandbox elements. But I doubt that.
