Atelier Ayesha Befriends A Dragon Hunter And Elemental Summoning Witch

By Spencer . April 30, 2012 . 10:59am

Gust gave us a look at two more playable characters in Atelier Ayesha. The heroine in this alchemy RPG is looking for her sister. She was described by Gust as a lonely girl after her grandfather passed away and her sister went missing, but she has lots of friends now! Like…

Wilbell Voll ErsLied a 14 year old witch. Blood type: B Height: 4 ft. 8 inches

Wilbell comes from a family of witches and says one day in the future she’s going to be a great witch. Right now, Wilbell can’t even fly. She’s venturing around the world in pursuit of a method that will let her fly in the skies. As the youngest child in her family, Wilbell has a cheeky personality and tends to be over confident. Wilbell thinks ruins are a good place to study so she decides to follow Ayesha.

In battle, Wilbell casts spells like Meteor Storm and she can also summon elements.

Juris Grunden – a 20 year old hunter. Blood type: O Height: 6 ft.

Juris is used to living life in the wild. He hunts animals for food, a skill he learned from his family. To be recognized as a true hunter, Juris must defeat a dragon and make scale mail from its remains. When Juris completes this task he will be recognized as an adult and he plans to take care of his family upon his return. Juris has a younger sister around Ayesha’s age. When Ayesha meets Juris, he’s reluctant to talk about the past, a hint that something important happened before the events in Atelier Ayesha. Counterattack is one of Juris’ moves in combat.

Atelier Ayesha uses Gust’s Cost Turn Battle system, which lets players walk around the battlefield during a skirmish. Players need to take distance in account since ally characters can jump in for a support attack if they are nearby. Spells and skills have range so you can target the entire party if everyone is close together, but this also leaves you open to enemy attacks that can hit multiple characters. It sounds like players will have to balance when to huddle the heroes in a group and when to split apart.

Position is another key element since you can strike enemies with a back attack if you can sneak behind them. Back attacks will deal critical damage.

Atelier Ayesha comes out on June 28 for PlayStation 3.

  • Juris is pretty badass. Good thing we have once again 2 great male characters, to keep things in balance~

  • Nicolas Vasquez

this game looks better after every screen i see of it.

  • aoihana

I’ve heard a lot of fuss about this game on here, but I never really looked into it.

I have to say, I was in a bit of disbelief when I laid my eyes on, it’s beautiful! I definitely have to get my PS3 in working order now, because this is simply amazing work! щ(゜ロ゜щ)

That said, my favorite character thus far has to be Wilbell Voll ErsLied, she’s simply cute and has such an awesome design.  (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

I admire her ambitious goals, and more so when she’s so seemingly hopeless! She can’t even fly! Though, you’re confident, and I’m confident you can do it! Fight! ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

I’m not familiar with past battle systems, but I like what I’m reading about this. I think it’s awesome that you can move about on the field! Very strategic elements indeed! (^v^)

I’ll have to keep my eye on this, most definitely! (◕‿◕✿)

  • Nitraion

Atelier series really shinning on ps3 :3

  • Anime10121

Hopefully I can get into this game, because the Arland series never really did it for me (although the art in all three games was breathtaking, much like this one’s art is looking to be).

  • I like how Wilbell’s hat has a hole in it for the ribbon, and the starry design under the lid!

Juris is 6ft, 20, hella strong, and he’s still not an adult…dayummmm.

sigh, I still have to procure the other Atelier games…

    Hemorrhaging money this year…

  • Prinnydoom

Hmm Shaping up nicely now. I might even play totori and meruru at this rate.

  • usagi_san

I can definitely wait for a localization cos my backlog and other immediate releases will keep me occupied till that day comes. The artwork gets better with each character and enemy that’s revealed.

Can’t wait for Ayesha to meet the other Atelier heroines of my Gust collection. ^^

  • icecoffemix

Heh, I like the male’s choice of weapon, why settle with one when you can rule both range?

  • rebecasunao

Juris is only 20 years old? With a body like that? Dem genetics.

  • This dude look like the new Sterkburg. I like that and like his weapon selection D: Wilbell looks cute enough ^^ Love the battle system, similar to Sora no Kiseki (if I have to name one) and that’s a huge plus.

  • Heidenroslein

    Wilbell looks adorable~ <3

And Juris, I'm not sure how you're only 20, but you look AWESOME.

  • looks really good, cant wait to play this.hope that nisa bring this title to the west :3

  • Ravage27

Bloody awesome character designs. Gust games keep looking better and better.

  • I haven’t even played Meruru yet but I can’t wait to play this!

  • I really like the witch’s design, and the dragon hunter looks strong and cool, but… He makes me miss Sterk… *sigh*

  • IceRomancer

Wilbells cuteness guarantees she’ll be a permanent member in my party :3

    Dem witch hats <3

  • ivanchu77

    *Looks at Wilbell pictures*

  • Göran Isacson

Juris, being a cross-bow/knife wielding dragon hunter is pretty bad-ass and all… but Keithgrif still outclasses you like WOAH.

Also, loli witch. eh, can have or lose her. Wonder if there will be any women older than twenty in this game…

    • PoweredByHentai
      • puchinri

Well, he was probably aiming for mid-twenties. Regina is technically “still a baby”. (That is to say, people that age are still considered quite young.)

Especially in comparison to the male side of the cast that is and looks distinctly older (so far, anyway).

        • PoweredByHentai

Are you saying that Tifa is a baby?

You realize that your comment makes Aeris a baby as well, right?

          • puchinri

They’re both younger than Regina (supposedly) and look it. But yeah, neither of them actually looks particularly older to me. They look like they could pass for late teens to early twenties.

An older women with a more distinguished face and some wrinkles or something would be nice. We get old men, but not old women. Or just a woman who doesn’t have as much of the youthful flare as the other ladies so far.

Hidari is capable of it too, so it’s not like it can’t be done (at all, but especially for this case). >u<

          • PoweredByHentai

I personally think that Aeris, Regina and Tifa look their age.  Then again, I grew up in an environment where my mom looks half her age.  You have no idea how awkward it was for me to watch my PE teachers flirt with my mom thinking that she was my elder sister or something when I was in 5th grade.  =_=

          • puchinri

I think with Regina, she’s a nice border of looking quite her age, having a bit more of a mature appeal and still looking young. With Aerith and Tifa, they don’t look their age to me (but they’re relatively young anyway).

For a funny bit of perspective, that’s the case with me and my grandmother. It’s been joked that I’ll be carded for life, and since high school and to this day, people still want to hit on my grandmother and confuse her for my middle-aged mother.

          • PoweredByHentai

Hah, I basically have to not shave my mustache otherwise I get carded for buying Mega Million tickets.  This is considering that I am now 28 years old.

My grandma, interestingly enough, has sort of looked her age.  I mean, she’s 80-something now but she looks like she’s in her 60s without any white hair.

I also have a cousin who is about 18 years older than I am and she looks about my age.  That kind of makes me go “what the hell?!?” from time to time.

I guess I’ll just chalk it up to genetics or something.

      • Göran Isacson

        … I could’ve swore I read that she was 18.
“That’s what they all say- in the squad car with you!”

Jokes aside, it’s possible that I just skim-read it and didn’t pay attention to her, since she looked about as old as Ayesha. Like, Juris and again, Keithgrif LOOK like adults. Regina never gave me that impression.

    • puchinri

I do have a soft spot for witch characters, no matter the age, but I would like to see some older women. That actually look older. x’D

  • puchinri

Not only am I loving Hidari’s style more and more, but also the designs.

Unf. And dat Juris. I would so tap him and his Monster Hunter life self.

I also love that all of the characters have heels in some form or another. Is there something about this world that requires heels? (In comparison to flats, I should say.)

The character (in-game) models are still looking fantastic too. So excited about this~. ♥

  • AzureNova

OMG OMG, game is going to be awesome! (Foams from mouth) :3

  • I have never played an atelier game, are they any good?, the art style looks fantastic, and the battle system looks interesting. Im a big fan of JRPGs but im afraid that this ones might be a bit to “girly” for me, can someone give me a objective opinion?

    • Ravage27

Y’know, I used to be someone who only plays Final Fantasy, Kingdom Heart and Star Ocean games. Rorona was my first Gust title and before i realised it, the Atelier series has displaced KH to become my no.2 favourite JRPG franchise of all time.

Honestly speaking, I don’t think Atelier is girl-ier than any of those games i’ve mentioned. In fact, every male character is at least 900% more manly than Edge Maverick. So unless you have something against cute girls, don’t worry too much about it :p

To me, the appeal of the Atelier games lies with its unique

      i) Atmosphere and Mood – it’s really rare and refreshing to find a JRPG that radiates such positivity and an overall feel-good factor. Seriously, i can’t recall the last game that made me smile or laugh this much. The cast has great chemistry and their interaction is really entertaining to watch. This is a matter of opinion, but the light-hearted story is a plus for me as i’m getting sick of ‘saving the world’ all the time.

ii) Gameplay – the best and deepest crafting gameplay ever, no exaggeration. Alchemy is where the heart of the gameplay lies and it’s incredible fun and deep.

iii) Presentation – Glorious art style, music and image quality.

    • puchinri

Going by what I’ve seen, the only “girly” factor is having female leads, which isn’t a girly factor at all. Otherwise, what Ravage27 said.

  • atelier ayesha is a badass game

  • Juris is awesome, I may buy the game because of him

  • Chiupon

I’m rarely impressed with character designs these days, but these…
They’re pretty great. I think this may be the first time in a game where i’m in love with everyone’s design.
Wilbell is definitely selling it for me.

  • WyattEpp

I hope that by revealing the goals of these characters, they’re foreshadowing them as secondary plot hooks. One of the things that bugged me about Totori was how fighting and slaying the unique monsters didn’t have any fanfare about it.  It’s like “Ho hum, you killed the Dragon. Yawn.”  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve sunk a lot of time into it because I love it (can not wait for the 22nd!), but it’s not flawless. I want to see Gust continue to improve their formula of strong characters interacting earnestly.
