Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed Takes To The Skies This Year

By Ishaan . April 30, 2012 . 2:31pm

Sega have announced Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and PC (digital) for release in late 2012. As the title suggests, the game has transforming vehicles that shift between different forms depending on the terrain (land, water or air). Watch the game’s trailer below:

What kinds of transformations will the game have? Here are three examples using Sonic:

  • Auragar

Sort of interested… I dunno whether or not I would get it though.

    • MrRobbyM

Like Mario Kart? The first one is like an HD Mario Kart with all the Sega charm and no blue shell. Easily one of the most fun games I’ve played this gen.

      • Auragar

I played a little bit of the first one on DS I didn’t like it that much but I didn’t hate it. I will probably get this it seems interesting.

        • MrRobbyM

I don’t know about the DS version. I played the PS3 version. I’d imagine it’s quite different :P

          • Auragar

I would assume the PS3 version ripped apart the DS version. lol I will probably get this though.

      • Wait…didn’t the game have a sorta blue shell in the first one?

        • MrRobbyM

Sorta. There was the big rocket thing but I don’t think it went for whoever was in first place. It just went along the middle of the track until it hit someone.

  • Repede91

I really enjoyed the first one. I’ll be eagerly anticipating this. The last screen looks so good.

  • malek86

This is relevant to my interest.

No Wii version, so I assume they’ll come out with a Wii U version later? Sonic games usually sell best on Nintendo platforms.

    • Auragar

I would be surprised if there wasn’t a Wii U version later.

    • OverlordZetta

Where do you get that idea? Most of the best ones have been on PS3/360 recently.

      • MrRobbyM

Sonic Unleashed sold significantly more on the Wii than it did on the PS3/360. Colors is also a Wii exclusive that sold well. This is probably due to all the Sonic games on the DS and the Mario & Sonic games on the Wii.

    • MrKappa

I only got the Wii version last time because it was cheaper and to play it with my brother.
I don’t know why there is no Wii version this time but maybe they are making the game so much better that a system as weak as the Wii can’t handle it.

  • I wonder how this game looks like on the 3DS?

  • aoihana

    Oh, man! ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆

I didn’t know this was coming to the 3DS! I read FinalArcadia talk about this, but I didn’t expect it to be like this. I’m really, really looking forward to this now! ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

I love arcade type racing games, and this looks real fun. I love the cornering, it looks so awesome. I think this is the best article I’ve read today, definitely! (◕‿◕✿)

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

The original rumor from a while back, I guess you missed it, indicated it was for 3DS. But yes if its like the first one it should be fun.

      • aoihana

Yeah, I haven’t been keeping up with game news recently, and I haven’t played the first one, but this looks definitely awesome. I hope it has online play, that would just definitely sell me! (◕‿◕✿)

        • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Hopefully, first one had it, so I doubt they’d regress.

  • As I have already excessively expressed my extreme enthusiasm for this game on the Open Thread, I’ll keep this short.

There has been no game in recent memory that has gotten me so excited! Reasons why? 1) Vyse. 2) Vyse. 3) VYSE. XD

And the fact that I liked the original S&SASR more than Mario Kart helps, too. ^_^

This is going to be AWESOME, and anybody else who wants to race me when it releases… I CALL VYSE. Nobody else can take him, LOL!

    • AnimeRemix

Why do I get the feeling that Vyse is one of the reasons your hyped for this game? =D

    • MrRobbyM

I think you forgot to mention Vyse.

    • Solomon_Kano

I remember you asking for Vyse to be in a sequel to All-Stars a couple days ago, so I had to chuckle when I saw this on IGN earlier.

      • You should’ve seen my face when I found out the news! I was in total shock for a second… and then proceeded to yell from our upstairs balcony down to my sisters that “VYSE IS IN THE NEW SONIC AND SEGA RACING GAME!!”

They weren’t as…uh, enthusiastic as I was, but oh well. :D

        • Solomon_Kano

Don’t worry, I’d imagine you probably mustered up enough enthusiasm to cover them too lol.

    • Holy shizzle. Did somebody say VYSE? Three times?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Mix Diddy Kong racing with MK7 with spy hunter  then you get this. Not bad at all

  • MrRobbyM

Hopefully the PC version will include multiplayer this time around. Other than that, color me excited.

  • Better have Rouge the Bat this time >_<

    • Yeah cuz the game didn’t have enough Sonic Characters  : P

      • But it IS Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, so it wouldn’t exactly be uncalled for to have more Sonic characters.

Honestly, I’d like to see Silver added to the roster. But since I just got Vyse, I’m perfectly content as is. ^_^

    • MrRobbyM

I say drop Big and add Rouge.

      • Big the Cat has become SEGA’s little joke, hasn’t he? I feel like he’s a way to troll the fans, taking up a slot some other character could have. :D

        • MrRobbyM

I thought his really brief appearances in SA2B were funny. I didn’t even notice until I read it online. And believe me, I played the game numerous times before that. Then I replayed it and laughed. But yeah, they could easily drop him from the roster. There’s another thing I didn’t like about the first S&SAS game. That there were too many copy cat characters T_T Too many characters had the same stats. Even if their all-star moves were different, it’s not like you used them that much.

  • AnimeRemix

Seems like this is the trailer music (full version)

    Anyways, hyped for this game.

  • Placido

I wasn’t excited for this game at all until Vyse was brought into this. That excites me. Now maybe Aika and Enrique will show up, too!? Ah, I can dream.

    Although this sounds pretty awesome.

    • Ah, no love for Fina? Ramirez would be pretty cool, too.

  • Bringing Vyse for this game is a cheap shot, Sega =(
You remind me the love I have for Skies of Arcadia and ignites again a desire for Skies of Arcadia 2 or a digital re-release for Skies of Arcadia Legends.

Nevermind, take my money. Hell, take my entire wallet.
Just give me Skies of Arcadia 2.

  • jc0111

I got Vyse… all I need is Blaze, and this game is as good as bought. Then again, the tracks themselves look stunning and really fun. I always think that the tracks make a good racing game, because you may have the coolest roster butthe game’s gonna bomb is the tracks are boring.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

This is one of the few times where Im glad the rumors were not the truth, initially it seemed like the game wasnt coming to the same platforms the first one came too, which was disappointing in and of itself, but this indicated otherwise which is great.

  • Solomon_Kano

This has shades of Diddy Kong Racing in it. You don’t even understand how hard I’m grinning right now.

Now I just need to know if the Vita version can play with the PS3 version so I can decide which one to get.

  • I’ll get it if it has ryu from shenmue. Miss that guy.

  • thaKingRocka

I played the first one and loved it. I had played the demo on 360 and found the frame rate to be unbearable, so I waited for a price drop on Steam. With the game running smoothly, it was damn good fun. I’m looking forward to this sequel for sure.

  • MrKappa

Glad this is coming 2012, I liked the first one and I hope this is much better with more characters than ever.
But they basically just copied Mario Kart 3DS. And Tails is not driving the Tornado? What the heck?

    • aoihana

If you’re referring to the transforming aspect, and being able to race on different terrains, then no, they didn’t copy Mario Kart 7, really.

In Mario Kart 7, other than the glider and propeller, the kart’s attributes do not change much from terrain to terrain.

The gliding aspect is very brief and largely used for shortcuts, and the underwater aspect is more of a gimmick seeing as how very few levels actually utilize it.

On the other hand, Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is a complete 180 from Mario Kart 7. Cars literally transform into completely different vehicles across terrains, and it seems like their change in attributes are just as dramatic.

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed has a much, much larger emphasis on the terrain aspect, it just doesn’t compare to Mario Kart 7’s. (◕‿◕✿)

      • Muggshotter

Though we do not know much about the game at the moment (how the transformed vehicles REALLY act on the different terrain)… but can I just shake your hand or something?

        • aoihana

Although it’s true that we don’t know much about the game, the trailer really showcases the terrains.

If you look at the gameplay in the trailer, which starts at about 00:40, you can see how dramatic the vehicles handle on the different terrains.

Cars drift and do sharp turns on the road, then transform on the river banks where it’s more like a boat, then again through the air where the vehicles actually fly and barrel roll through the air.

In Mario Kart 7 it’s more like a change in physics rather than becoming completely different vehicles. (◕‿◕✿)

      • Vyrus

I have to disagree on what you said about Mario Kart 7’s terrains because they do contribute, either positively or negatively, to the gameplay. For example, you are more slower underwater than you are on land or in air. The same thing goes for the air sections: you gain speed in air depending on your kart’s lift. The only thing that makes the “kart’s attributes [to] not change much from terrain to terrain” all depends on your kart’s customization or your character.

However, I do agree that the vehicle transformations on this game would have more dramatic effect on different terrains compare to those of Mario Kart 7’s.

  • kroufonz

give me isara and edelweiss sega!

  • jakxzero

Looks promising and the graphics looks great, i loved the 1st

  • Zonic505

Already digging the fact they added Gilius & Vyse, 2 characters that were considered for the original (Gilius was even in the prototype, but was scrapped) and we’re getting a freakin’ Panzer Dragoon track. I cannot wait to see who else will make it in.

Also, Segata Sanshiro seriously needs to be in this, especially after they considered him for the original.

    • doubleO7

Where were those two? I don’t recall seeing them in the trailer, but I guess I just missed them.

      • Zonic505

While they weren’t in the trailer (which sucks, I wanted to see how they looked), it was confirmed by numerous sites they were in.

  • Bakuryukun

Oh hey a racing game where going through water or being airborne makes your vehicle change.

    I kid.

    • puchinri

I was kinda thinking that too. x’D
Though, I do appreciate the more distinct changes here.

  • pockystix

I actually liked the first one more than Mario Kart Wii

and this one looks to be better than Mario Kart 7~

Now if only I could race and Dallas from VC1!

  • Muggshotter

Oh god, the sequel to my favourite next-gen racer is looking hella sharp. I’m having expectations for this one, like all-new voice casting (seriously, they need to do that), more options (Best lap and 3-lap time trial for example) aaand I don’t know, less glitches?

The gimmick of transformation is an interesting approach though, it’s like they literally wanted to give everyone an equal ground (characters like Tails and Metal Sonic did well due to no direct contact with the terrain and thus brain-dead boosting) and this does open up more detailed track designs as well. Or on a second thought, that doesn’t make much sense. But tracks do get more complicated now and it’s cool.

I made through the first season, and I’m all ready for the next one. Come at me, Transformed All-Stars. Make me happy… behind the wheels.

  • Somehow, I can’t help but this game is also some sort of strategic racing. What if there’s tracks that may also have more than just one route with different terrain each that any racer can take, and, depending on a certain racer’s vehicle attribute, (Example, Vehicle A’s boat form excels out of all of its forms.) He or she can gain the upper hand and take the first place in an upset.

    •  Sega should read this…

      • I’m sure Sumo already thought of it…

    • Vyrus

So, basically, like Mario Kart 7? Yeah, that would be awesome.

  • Tom_Phoenix

While I’m sure it will be a nice game, I always thought there was something inherently wrong about Sonic racing in a vehicle.

I mean, his whole shtick is that he can run VERY fast. I always thought it would be more likely that he would go: “Drive? HAH! I don’t need no stinkin’ vehicle! I’ll just OUTRUN the competition!”

  • protofox mad i sold the 1st one..guess im going to gamestop this week to pick it back up

  • thebanditking

This is great news the first was extremely well done and had some great nostalgia moments packed in (exactly what a mash up like this should be). I’ll be picking this up on PS3 for sure but if they do the Vita version right (actually put some effort in) then I will gladly double dip.

  • ManeatingCouch

They’re just ripping off Mario Kart 3D, which in turn ripped off Diddy Kong Racing.
