Like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis Open Can Spray Ink At Your Screen

By Ishaan . May 1, 2012 . 9:00am

This morning, Nintendo announced more features for Mario Tennis Open, including a new mode for the game. In Ink Showdown mode, you play against your opponent while Piranha Plants shoot ink balls at the 3DS screen from the back. When this happens, you need to hit the ink balls before they hit the screen or it gets covered in ink, similar to the Blooper item in Mario Kart.

Additionally, Mario Tennis Open will also have unlockable characters, such as Luma, Baby Mario and Dry Bowser. These characters can be unlocked either by progressing through the game or using QR Codes. Finally, the game also has StreetPass feature by which you can play against AI characters based on people you encounter via StreetPass.

Mario Tennis Open will be released on May 20th.

  • Im a little disappointed that this doesn’t have the RPG elements that Mario Tennis Advanced had.  Don’t know if I’m going to pick this up, but As of right now, it still sits behind Kid Icarus and by that point I might need to save for LM2 or Paper Mario.

Might have to pick this up. Nintendo’s library is getting really good!

EDIT: Can’t wait to try out all the different combination of items.

I don’t know about the rest of you but ink on the screen for a game like tennis just looks like a bigger hazard than in mario kart. At least in Mario Kart you could still see the map to be able to help control the kart and it wasn’t that long of a time effect to do serious enough harm to your driving position. But for tennis, I don’t know if this ability can work enough to be fair.

  • Is Metal Mario gonna be on there?
