Fight Old Gym Leaders Like Brock And Misty In Pokémon Black & White 2

By Ishaan . May 12, 2012 . 10:00am

Pokémon Black/White 2 has something called a “Pokémon World Tournament”. While it isn’t certain whether this is a separate mode or one of the new in-game events, the World Tournament will allow you to fight older gym leaders and champions like Brock, Misty, Blue, Giovanni and others.

Other things have changed, too, in the time between Black/White and Black/White 2. Cheren is now a Normal-type gym leader, while CoroCoro magazine confirms that Bianca is the one that gives you your starter Pokémon this time around, as a favour to Professor Juniper. Additionally, N from the original games has gone missing and no one knows where he was.

CoroCoro also reveals that Tornadus, Landorus, Thundurus have new “Incarnation” forms. reports that the three have undergone no type changes.

Following Pokémon Black/White 2’s lead, the Pokémon Best Wishes anime will switch to Best Wishes 2, featuring more older Pokémon, the return of Dawn and Cynthia, and involvement from Giovanni in the next Team Rocket-related plot. More details from CoroCoro can be found at the link above.

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

Wow this is truly interesting :O
I cannot wait to play this game that’s for sure.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

brock, misty and blue. YES!! it’ll be nostalgic facing them again :D

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Look at Brock’s expression. “Well Well Well…”

  • Haou_Yamata

Yes, I have been waiting for this ever since Heart Gold and Soul Silver to be able to rematch old Gym Leaders AND Champions.  It looks like B2 and W2 are going to be incredibly awesome.

  • Oh my god, Giovanni will finally be prevalent in the Anime? And what’s that? Brock, Misty, Green/Blue/Gary and more will be in this game, too? AWESOME.

  • usagi_san

The game is sounding better with each article! Though the Kami Trio’s new formes look weird, I hope they’ll grow on me over time. I can’t wait to face the old gym leaders and champions. I might have to pick-up both copies now.

The anime has been surprisingly really good and look forward to their appearance in future episodes.

  • Tom_Phoenix

What I’m wondering is if we will face Red, the very first Pokémon champion, just like in (Heart)Gold/(Soul)Silver/Crystal.

  • Spirit Macardi

While the gameplay for the Poke’Mon series has gone more or less unchanged between generations, the sense of storytelling has taken some HUGE leaps recently. It’s awesome to hear that some of the old gym leaders are back (though wasn’t Giovanni in hiding?), and I’m looking forward to seeing if there’s a conclusion to N’s subplot.

    • andref

Technically Giovanni had left to go train after getting beaten up by a 10 year old kid his pride was beaten and he felt he wasn’t strong enough to lead team rocket

  • I’m so glad there’s this World Tournament thing in B2W2, because there were only really two gym leaders I liked in the original BW (Cilan and Chili). Steven being present is just instant win for me. And Cheren’s new look (minus the glasses!) is looking pretty good as well!

  • SirRichard

    So, GOTY contender, then?

Cheren’s lost his glasses and now Bianca’s sporting a pair, huh? That’s going to be a fun gym battle, can’t wait for the multi-paragraph rant about power and the searching for thereof.

In all seriousness, B&W2 are actually looking pretty damn good, and the World Championship idea is absolutely brilliant and I’m loving that Mecha Tyranitar.

    •  This just in, the next Pokemon Crossover will be with the next Super Robot Wars! **** YEAH!

      • Ronald Bixler

Bite your tongue! I will not have the cuteness of pokemon usurp any attention away from the Mazingers, Getters, and the Muteki Trio!

        •  What do you mean? Everyone has equal attention in the games! And Kouji knows how to share a spotlight! If anyone else, only the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Bonta-Kun are the Spotlight Hoggers.

  • They should have brought back Misty into the anime series as opposed to Dawn– teach them whippersnappers how REAL female traveling companions are supposed to be!!!

    • Uh oh… Is it bad if Misty is my least favorite female traveling companion of Ash’s…? XD

      • *agrees* I also ship Ash with May. c:

        • Advanceshipping is also my favorite ship for Ash and one of his female companions. ^_^ May was my favorite of all of them.

          •  I loved May to pieces admittedly, I’ve only seen parts of Pokemon series that were based upon the first set of DS Pokemon games ^^;.

          • DP? Those were, in my opinion, the best of anime, so you saw at a good point!

          •  @FinalArcadia:disqus The anime series had actually started to get really good right before the GBA Pokemon anime was in its final season. the very first series will always have nostalgia for me and be abit more intricate, but seeing all the different locales and people is one of the major draws of the series, even if they all get more extravagant with each series.

  • aoihana

Man, Brock and Misty?! I’ve so many fond memories of the original
Pokémon, it was so amazing! I remember Brock was my favorite, he was so funny! I would cheer him on with Nurse Joy! ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

It’s been so long, and I’m happy to see Brock hasn’t aged one bit! Though, Misty’s change is rather radical!

It’s awesome that you’ll be able to battle them, it’s a blast from the past! (◕‿◕✿)

    • HeatPhoenix

These aren’t the same characters as in the Anime. Brock isn’t a skirt chaser and Misty only found Red cute, nothing more!

      • aoihana

Well, I know they’re not the same characters, but regardless, seeing them brings back memories! (◕‿◕✿)

      • ThatBlackGuy

Their’s one thing that both Brocks share in common they will both never open their damn eyes.

    • hongisfire

just speculation, maybe gamefreak will surprise us with their adult version. Like caitlin.
       Giovani in white hair?

    • Hinataharem

      Meowth that’s right!

  • Back for another beatdown huh Giovanni? Shall I further humiliate you by using Mewtwo >:D

    • Ronald Bixler

Anyone can do that. True humiliation is dealt by the fin of a Lv.100 flailing Magikarp!

  • KuroiKen

Puked at the localization names. Just remembering makes me sick…
Good thing I’m playing all pokemon games in japanese now.
Aaah, you made me remember nightmares of my childhood.

    • The localized names are like masterpieces compared to some of the localized names Yu-Gi-Oh gets, LOL.

      • KuroiKen

Well, I watched the japanese version from the start, so I do not know anything about Yu-Gi-Oh! localization. Great for me.

    • Ronald Bixler

I take it your one of those types that gets excited when a Zollo v Zorro argument breaks out in a One Piece message board?

      • KuroiKen

Care not about OP, but when I got information about how the names and all were really named in my childhood, I felt so sick that I stopped watching the series overall. Only not so long ago, about a year or two, I re-entered the series starting from the first season, but this time I took the japanese version, the only true and holy(I tell you, finding full japanese series on the net was a tough work, but now I have everything, that’s freaking 150GB of data, but it was worth it)
Good thing I only played 2 games on GBA with crappy adapted localized naming, so I don’t have to replay much.

  • Anime10121

Already had the game preordered and this is just icing on the freakin cake! Misty, Brock, Giovanni, and Blue,(hoping Red is in too), this game just got unbelievably more awesome!  Hope they have actual story relevance vs. just being quick cameo bosses!

    • ffboi7

I thought Gary was Blues video game counterpart o-o

      • Anime10121

Yeah fixed! My bad got so excited I listed him twice:P

  • Spider-Man

IMO Black/White have the best story so far in a Pokemon game. The other being the Colosseum/XD games. I’m looking forward to this game. I was so hooked with the original story, can’t wait to see what the sequel has in store for us. I’ll be getting Black 2 for sure.

    • Anime10121

Yeah I know right!  I hadnt actually liked a Pokemon game since the second gen(Gold and Silver) as I felt story and the Pokemon themselves were SEVERELY lacking (or just plain sucked) in gen3 and 4 was ready to give up on the series until I played White. That game has brought me back into the Pokemon fold:P.

      • komiko12

Oddly I liked Platinum really much. Maybe it’s because Sinnoh’s mythology is really good. It made the Legendaries really legendary but of course they can be caught in a pokeball no matter what. And some of Sinnoh’s pokemon are cool (Garchomp and Spiritomb are my faves) though many of them are evolutions of previous pokemon.

  • Welp I’m interested on this game now.

Considering the last one I played was blue years ago, that is a great feat from nintendo all things considered.

  • Sam Park

if they include Red their i’m definitely buying this game, and i personally think that they did this to make sure to make this a unique game rather than a blatant copy of Black and White adding numerous contents

  • Sam Park

wait, if this is true, and we have seen N, Bianca and Cheren, the three main rivals of B&W, doesn’t that means the most likely final boss is going to be Hilda or Hilbert?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething heres more info guys and more N :D lot have changed. Bianca Stole Cheren Glasses or there dating idk

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

no one cares *fades in to darkness*

      • We care! Just give us some time. We’re getting here as fast as we can.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          awww ok :3

          • Ronald Bixler

The ninja’s one true weakness: cute little birds.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Giovanni is back folks, remember how epic he is in the manga and originals? Looks like this is finally incorporating some feature that we have wanted in the series for years. I wonder if any of them will have a lvl 90 pikachu or other lvl 90’s…lvl 90 Nidoqueen, Rhydon, Dragonite, Aerodactyl…

    • Captain Bringdown

He’s just showing up for a world tournament. Plasma’s still the bad guys.

  • MrKappa

That new Misty design is awesome. Then right beside her we have to see this palm tree hair looking goof ball. Why can’t they just get someone as simple and cool as Red?

    • raitouniverse

It’s not “new” technically, it’s her HGSS design isn’t it?

    • Anime10121

That’s been Misty’s redesign since the original Gold/Silver (which makes sense since its supposed to take place a year or two after Red/Blue/Green/Yellow.  That picture is the exact same model they used for the Heart Gold/ Soul Silver remakes.

      •  The transition from RGBY to GSC was 3 years, IIRC. Also, the later games had more time passing after each version is released, but not with a time skip as large as the one mentioned earlier, which is why most of the original characters stay in their GSC redesign.

        • Time Sage

Gen I and III (includeing the Remakes)  are set at the same time, while Gen II and IV (includeing the remakes) are set at the same time. V seems to happen sometime after II and IV due to Cynthia’s comments but it’s vauge. So the timeline is FRLG/RSE > DPPl/HGSS > BW > BW2

          •  It’s a bit weird to consider that, though. If we use the timeline depicted in Bulbapedia, it would be:

            Gen I/III > Gen II/IV (Three Years Later) > Gen V-1 (3-5 years later) > Gen V-2 (exactly 2 years later)

That’s a span of 8-10 Years since the first game. If that were to be, then yeah, the Pokemon World’s humans DO age really slow!

  • lyrris

Does this means there will be another involvement of Team Rocket?

    • EmptyStar

No, it looks like he’s just in there because he’s an old gym leader. It has nothing to do with Team Rocket.

  • ZBaksh386

I’m interested in seeing how former characters look after ten years.

    • andref

Its pokemon magic same as how anime characters don’t age, these guys will not age either

      • Ronald Bixler

Anime aging: change their clothes, say that they’re taller without actually showing them as being any taller than before, and dilute their personality by a 1/1 ratio, maybe give them a small scar for spice.

    • Captain Bringdown

Well they aged back in 2000, when Gold and Silver was released but eh.

      • ZBaksh386

This would probably be 10 years in the future or so so there is more of a significant age shift.

      • ZBaksh386

This would probably be 10 years in the future or so so there is more of a significant age shift.

  • Shadowman

Nice! I haven’t battled these guys in a decade now it will be nice to have another battle with them again just to relive the pokemon blue and red memories  all over again.

  • ToshiChan

I’ve been asking for this since the GBA games, finally, I will beat them all. If I could fight every gym leader and main char from the previous games, I would be sooooooooooooooo happy

    • Ronald Bixler

How about facing them all in order of appearance (with the pokemon champions being the last) in a tower survival mode style, where you couldn’t recover your pokemon between matches and had to use the items in your bag instead?

  • andref

Though curious what happens to the previous characters, will they cease to exist?

    • Ronald Bixler

My guess is that they will do like Red: make their way to the most secluded and hard to reach place as possible and then sit and wait for the region’s pokemon champion to inevitably make their way to them for a challenge… maybe play some sudoku in the mean time…

      • s07195

I thought all you had to do to get to Red in Mt. Silver was to walk up into the other exit of the cave? How is that hard to reach? …Though thinking about it I don’t think that there were many people (in-game) who beat all 16 gyms to get permission to go there.

        • raymk

Hey now even in game opponents don’t like the cheat unless their team rockets.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

after a second look I like the art style and design so much more for the 1st generation. the new guy really sticks out like a saw thumb amongst blue, brock, misty and Giovanni lol!

  • We love you too, Pokemon Company <3

  • ShawnOtakuSomething
    • s07195

…Is that really N there? lol it looks like he’s trolling or something.

And I definitely saw the male protagonist (Brendan) of Emerald (wearing green cap) in one of the smaller photos in the World Tournament part of the video. It seems his title is just ‘Pokemon Trainer’. Whatever happened to beating the Hoenn league?

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

wait Brendan is there?! and Yes N is back but he still wearing the same gear *smelly*

  • omeganeko

I haven’t played a pokemon game since ruby BUT this has really got me interested (Bad memories of friend saving over my my pokemon yellow save file come flooding back in)

  • Barrylocke89

If this wasn’t a DS game, I’d say it’s all DLC bait.

    • Ronald Bixler

Keep saying things like that and Nintendo may consider doing something impossible and squeezing water from a rock…

  • Göran Isacson

Classic characters return to the game AND the anime? Characters in Pokemon… will AGE? I think my toes just flew off my feet in surprise man. Walking is going to be HELL from now on, but I don’t even mind because EEEEH my childhood just tore itself free from the black and tarred husk my soul has become and run jubilant through flowery fields, because THAT little smartass is from before the time my toes jet-rode away and can still run! YOU LITTLE SHOW-OFF!

At any rate- this sounds like a pretty cool feature. Looking forward to seeing Giovanni again, wondering if he’ll be up to old tricks or is just enjoying his retirement.

    • This means Ash will finally turn eleven? -gasps-

      • haqua

And twelve, since this is two years later!

        • Captain Bringdown

First off, the manual of Red/Blue states the trainer is 11 when they start their journey

This game takes place some years after Gold/Silver, which already took place about 3 years after Red/Blue. So 5 + x (x = years between HG/SS and B/W, which are currently unknown), the original trainer would be AT LEAST 16 years old.

          • haqua

But I’m talking about Ash, not Red. (And, Ash started when he was ten. Never knew about Red being eleven, though.)
Or maybe I’m misunderstanding and what you’re trying to say completely flew over my head.

  • rurin

Team Rocket is coming back? wow.
And N :D yay wonder if that’s a central plot to the story :3
If only the main characters from Black and White could have cameos too…
But I love how they’re bringing back old stuff :D

  • ivanchu77

    Brock,Misty and Ash/blue… man that gives me so many memories, times were much happier and simple back in kindergarten ;_;

Nice to see some fanservice for the old fans

  • Handsome Luigi ♢

    Blue/Gary: Smell ya later losers!

  • Kebo Martin

Can I just be Gary MF’in Oak in this game instead of wtf hair protagonist? btw isnt he supposed to be Green since Blue is the female protagonist in FRLG?

    • komiko12

Actually he really is supposed to be called Green because in Japan the first games are Red and Green…

When it was localized, I think it was changed to Red/Blue..
So in Japan he is called Green while in US he is Blue

  • thundergodCN

Getting too old to be playing pokemon, but it keeps drawing you back

    • raymk

I realized long ago that your never to old as long as you have a handheld.

  • Still gonna get this game…..

  • AzureNova

    I WILL catch them all!

  • komiko12

There are more people revealed actually

Lance, Steven, Cynthia, Volkner are in.
And if you saw the full scan, then you can notice that Blaine, Janine, Surge and Erika are also in..

Now I wonder when will Sabrina be confirmed…

    • Solomon_Kano

Volkner’s back? And Lance? If I hadn’t been sold on this game twice already, I’d be sold all over again lol.

      • komiko12

In another site, it was said that Cynthia organized the event. Bless her.
Game Freak does know how to make money while keeping the fans satisfied.

        • raymk

Of course they do, it was even a smart move to put this game on DS.  I’m sure a new pokemon will come out in 2 years time like always.

          • komiko12

Yes putting on in the DS was good as it would be accesible to many players whether they have a DS or 3DS. They’ve also put an incentive to 3DS users by making the AR Searcher App.

  • Is this somewhat a Pokemon anniversary game with the old faces returning?

    • Ronald Bixler

I like to think of it as: what Gamefreak can do when it doesn’t have to allot all of its time to thinking of 100 new pokemon to put in the next game.

    •  Yes, pretty much! This would be considered a very late 15th Pokemon Anniversary game. But technically, it is a 15th Anniversary game! To us! To Japan, it would be considered the 16th Anniversary title (although, that technically falls for Pokemon X Nobunaga’s Ambition), and if we don’t get this game this year, then next year, it would really be a 16th Anniversary game.

      Phew, that was long-winded.

      • Aaaah. I guess meeting the classic characters again was a hint. This might be Pokemon’s answer to Digimon’s Xros Over, hehehe.

        • Renaldi Saputra

they do the same also in re:digitize… the return of the old characters..

  • SeventhEvening

I really don’t like the new protagonist’s hair. It just looks insane.

Putting 100s of monsters into balls, summoning them to do battle, stopping and evil organization…. All of that was fine. It is the male protagonist’s hair that is breaking my suspension of disbelief.

    •  The girls had always a better design IMO, but I liked the main character from Sapphire (the one with white hair) even so this is kind of sad because male rivals and gym master look a way better than your main character.

      • Brandon Stark

actually, brendan had brown hair, the white thing was part of his cap.

    • protofox

after the growing apocalypse thats on most yugioh characters’ heads. this hair seems prrreetttyyy normal.

      •  Attention pokemon trainers! My hair has an announcement to make!

    • Reno Evangelista

I dunno what everyone’s dealy is with this.

The female protag manages enormous amidala buns while still having tails that go down past her chest (meaning that her hair must be at least as long as her entire body, probably more), the same bizarre golf visor and a tutu.

      She looks awful IMO.

      • raymk

They both look bad but the guy is still 10x worst than the female.  Females can use weave guys don’t do that crap and females wear more weird clothes than guys as well.  Everything she has is believeable but dudes don’t come anywhere close to dressing that stupid and not only that he looks plain as f**k.  The girl isn’t that good either and not to mention that he didn’t even say anything about her since by his post he wants to play as the guy.

        • Reno Evangelista

He’s wearing a jacket and cargo shorts over his swimwear so that he doesn’t have to go to the changing room. So unbelieeeeevable. The only awkward thing is the visor and I can get used to that. Shaggy hair physics? You obviously don’t know many Jews and Indians.

The girl looks like she took one look at a clothes pile at a garage sale and said “I’LL TAKE IT ALL. ALSO THOSE HOT CROSS BUNS TO SUPERGLUE TO MY HEAD.”

He said the guy is breaking his disbelief and so he’s likely to pick the girl.

I said I don’t understand why and then demonstrated that she’s much more unrealistic. You gave a lot of excuses as to why a girl would dress like an idiot rather than actually explaining why the guy’s design is unrealistic. And now we are here.

          • raymk

Plenty of people usually hate the male characters and yet they still pick the guy.  I hated the male on D&P and yet I still picked the guy, the only time I didn’t pick the guy was in b&w because I thought the female design was better.
To answer your other question I never said that the guy wasn’t believeable.  I said what he looks like is crap.  I will say what he has on is unbelievable for in that I don’t know very many guys that dress that way at all.  His whole design is atroctious and being that more people hate the guys design this time around it has to be something that isn’t clicking with us.  Besides that i’m not really defending either of them as I said they both look bad nothing to do with unrealistic they are garbage, the guy just even more so for looking like a chia pet.

          • Reno Evangelista

See but the problem here is that the original poster said he was unbelievable and you were defending him. If you weren’t defending/attacking him you’d stop referring to him.  Your opinion is in some way an extension of his, whether positive or negative.

“Looking like crap” is completely subjective and I was nice enough to point out that me disliking the girl was my opinion anyway. You can say all you want about the guy, but in my eyes it is the girl who is ugly as sin. Don’t speak for other people if you don’t want to look like you’re making a lot of faulty assumptions and contradicting your own opinions. Which you are.

  • Renaldi Saputra

    seems legit

  • boundries_san

    To Ishaan here.^^

It seems that Pokemon is still more popular than the double babes thread lol as this thread stands on the most popular list now.

  • Bio_liquid

Misty!!1 What…..What have you done to your HAIR?!?!?!

    • Dyne

wait, that Misty in the img!!!

      • Renaldi Saputra

it says Kasumi.. then it’s a yes

    • Time Sage

Nothing. That’s just reused artwork from HGSS.

      • Bio_liquid

I said the same thing when i saw her in HGSS.

  • Well, at least Misty looks feminine now. And Brock is still Brock.

    • Renaldi Saputra

       pervert as always LOL

      • Say do you watch the anime? How Misty latest appearance in the anime? Now I watch the movie only….

        • Renaldi Saputra

i watched the anime but it was long ago (about 7-10 years ago). I dropped it bcos it’s getting boring bcos they repeated everything again and again, yea monotone.. As far as i know kasumi (misty)’s last appearance was in johto region.

  • Ace.Of Hearts♥

*cries tears of joy* oh Gamefreak this is too much~all the old gym leaders are back! and they have the same look as in Gold and Silver (well the manga at least) yays~

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Hoping for all the Gen III Gym Leaders to be in. It would be cool to see them with new sprites and stronger and different pokemon as well.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope they mention the old protagonist and you battle them and you can battle Red again

    • usagi_san

I really like the second image, a lot. I am so up for these games and Conquest.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

indeed  but I really want to play B/W2

        • usagi_san

          Me too!

    • LynxAmali

       1st image is wrong. That’s not Ash’s B/W getup.

If they use his old get up, WITH THE HAT, I might actually have to start watching the anime again.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

The artist hated that Ash didn’t age at all so he drew him like that because “whats the point in changing his looks if he’s still 10”

  • Darnnit, I didn’t want B+W2, now i do…

  • Bunzi

I’m a little disappointed by this one, so far: Black and White’s entire shtick was reinvigorating the series with new things: new characters, new Pokémon, new methods of battle and trading, and a new (if .
Now they’re backpedaling on that and selling this game on all the old things they’re rehashing. It just seems… backward. The old guys don’t even have updated looks to suggest that they weren’t shoehorned into this to stir up fans. The only thing I’m really excited for thus far are the new genie forms.

    • But Giovanni’s Team Rocket is back. The only thing here now is to see if he either returned from retirement to continue his old shtick, or this is another Neo Team Rocket. Then again, that’s just what I heard.

      • Captain Bringdown

The new evil team is Black Plasma.

  • Solomon_Kano

Aaaand now my purchase has just been reaffirmed. Giovanni, Brock, and Misty? That’s great.

  • haqua

if the anime is following this game, too…
Then we’ll see Gary and Misty again!? And maybe, finally, N…?
    /tears shed

  • Kebo Martin

If Red would make an appearance and at HGSS his pokemon were lvl80+, would that make his pokemon beyond level 100 if he was to appear in this game?

100+ level cap. its like Dissidia all over :)

    • raymk

They should really do that, I want to fight a champion who’s pokemon are at least level 90 to 100.

I very much want to play this game. Now if all the past gym leaders, elite four and even the uber Red from HGSS were in…it would be EPIC!

    • So far, only the old characters that have prevalence in the series plot are revealed. Red wasn’t shown, sure, but he will be in, and with a master team that surpasses the limits of EV training, I’m sure!

By the way, have you heard the new soundtrack remixes of the old battle themes from previous games? Even the Green?Blue/Gary’s Pokemon Champion Battle Theme is remixed! That one is on YouTube.

  • I’m getting this game! O_O  It’s amazing!

  • i really hope you can fight red, with even higher leveled pokemon than what he had in HG/SS that would be amazing

      Red is confirmed.
