Capcom’s EX Troopers Has Nothing To Do With Mega Man Legends 3

By Ishaan . May 22, 2012 . 3:23pm

When Capcom recently revealed EX Troopers, an anime-style spin-off of the Lost Planet series of games, some noticed what they felt were visual similarities shared with Mega Man Legends 3, a game that was in development for the Nintendo 3DS, but was cancelled early in development.

This caused certain Capcom followers to wonder whether EX Troopers was what the Mega Man Legends 3 project turned into after it was cancelled, or perhaps if the game even simply re-used certain art assets from Legends 3, such as character designs and so on. This is not the case at all, however, says Capcom’s Seth Killian.

“For what it’s worth, I can tell you I played an early version of this game (which was styled in the same way, and with what looks to be similar gameplay) in Japan well before the Legends project ran into trouble,” Killian shares on the Capcom forums, in response to users asking about any potential connection between the two games.

This means that EX Troopers was already well into development before Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled. Killian clarifies: “It is definitely not a reskinned Legends. I have not played EX Troopers for quite a while, but once more details emerge about the gameplay, I think it will become clearer that this is the case.”

Killian also confirms that the two games didn’t share development staff at the time that he had a chance to try out EX Troopers. “At the time I played it, the projects did not share members,” he states. “Since the MML3 team is now on other projects, it’s conceivable some are working on this title, but that would be the extent of the overlap so far as I know.”

Development of EX Troopers is being led by one of the producers of the Monster Hunter series, Shintaro Kojima. The game will be released on the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 3 sometime this year in Japan. Capcom haven’t announced a North American or European release for the game yet.

  • RIP the Legends series and welcome ExTroopers

    • Testsubject909

Guess those Storm Troopers ran through some hard times after they lost the war huh?

So, why is Capcom making a game about unemployed Star Wars soldiers located in some Lost Planet?

  • Shadowman

I’m still piss at you capcom for killing megaman and for making SFxTK >:/ But this game caught my attention and I’m a big fan Lost Planet.

  • revenent hell

Well I dont care for MegaMan at all,the artwork is just not to my likeing so if this resembles that gotta say its an instant no buy for me.

  • Quinton Cunningham

Even if they ARE using assets leftover form MML3, why is that a bad thing? Far better than trashing it entirely.

    • Visa Vang

The bad thing is, if this was a reskinned MML3, they ripped off the fans hard work for MML3. Not only did they ripped the fans off, they also said untrue things towards the MML3 community which those words was enough to cause a riot.

      • Testsubject909

Untrue part, you mean the whole “we didn’t have enough support from the community so we’re cancelling MML3” thing? I still remember that article and thought how much bull that was.

  • well. . . I am still disappoint. . . for that, and the guys hair

but oh well, CARPCOM is what CAPCOM does.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Huh, I didnt even think of Megaman when I saw this. Still don’t.

    • Luna Kazemaru

       I know right.

      • Raharu95

Maybe that fire shot was similar enought to a charged up buster blast to attract some attention.

    • Shadowman

Exactly my friend I don’t know what capcom was talking about.

  • This sounds like an oddly specific denial.

    • That’s because it was in reply to a very specific question that was asked.

      • Guest

         Doesnt look like MML3 though

        • Yeah, it really doesn’t. I don’t know myself where people got that idea. Just because it looks anime-esque and had one character that looked similar to Legends 3?

      • Hm. I meant what i said as a joke and as you said below, I can’t really see what made people see the similarities to MML3.I would have never guessed that people thought this had anything to do with MML3 had it not been brought up in the article.

  • Repede91

There is an interview somewhere with Inafune where he says that Lost Planet 1/ M.T. Framework were developed with the possibility of Mega Man Legends 3 in mind, in case they ever got the go ahead from the Capcom higher-ups.

  • I’m glad that at least Killian is willing to speak so consistently with fans. It’s a very nice touch of Capcom’s. I too was furious when MML3 was cancelled (it was one of the games that made me want a 3DS), but this game looks like it could be a lot of fun and so I will just wait on this game now.

  • boundries_san

I thought from the first, LP IS designed by using several MML series mechanic. Why just now all the thought about following MML formula comes out here?

Man it seems “Blue Bomber” fans is getting desperate here lol.^^

  • It won’t stop every angry fan from comparing and complaining. That terrible fan character left me butt-hurt over MML3. I scarcely remember playing MM64 so it sucks that it was canceled, it might have been good but I don’t really care either.

This EX Troopers is looking really neat, I believe people are grasping at straws. I’d rather have both games but if I had to choose I’d go with EX Troopers over MML3.

  • Zonron

weird combo of systems to put them on, but im still pretty interested in them, i like lost planet games! i wounder when more info will be released about them

  • I know Lost Planet feels like MML in terms of mechanics, but it was still Lost Planet. So it’s doubtful Capcom left the project in favor of this. And even if they did, who cares? Capcom left Megaman. They’ve made it clear. Twice.

    • Godmars

But its still possible, rather directly or indirectly, character designs were reused. Even if only someone currently on EX visited the MML3 offices or looked at an old file in the general data base.

Not that it should really matter, though Capcom’s not doing themselves by responding to what is a very minor thing which isn’t even worth the term “complaint”. Its just something a fan noticed.

  • One word:

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

  • Laharl

A guy who’s sole job is to do PR for the company? Seems Legit.

  • Mago Iichi

The article title incites rage that I have already buried. Now I cannot unsee this game being the reason MML3 got cancelled for.

    • So, basically, you choose to abandon common sense so that you can have a reason to be angry. Riiiight…

      • Mago Iichi

I’d have no reason to be angry if Megaman Legends 3 wasn’t mentioned in the first place.

    • boundries_san

I lol this comment here lol.

  • Domii

Oh please don’t bring the painful memories of the MML3 cancelation, let’s just leave that behind us.

  • KingGunblader

I wonder how different the 3DS and PS3 versions will be??

  • Luis Camargo

Next Capcom news: EX Troopers will have a Megaman cameo. Legends series.

That would be fun, but I could see a lot of people not reacting well to that.

    • Testsubject909

Anything that isn’t just a Megaman game will piss a lot of people off. The Blue Bomber is, after all, one of the great protagonists of Capcom that’s beloved and well remembered and enjoyed across many consoles and generations. To many, he’s not meant to be some side character or an extra, he’s meant to be on center stage.

It’s a real shame they cancelled when they did. Megaman Legends 3 and Megaman Universe would’ve been perfect swan songs for Megaman. A long awaited sequel that would create a finalized (hopefully) trilogy. And a game with so much customization that it’s basically Little Big Megaman.

  • eilegz

There is an old saying; “never believe it until it is officially denied”.

what can i say… capcom credibility its pretty low after sfxt

    • Testsubject909

How about until it’s officially proven or disproven? Evidence works harder then just a vocal statement.

  • Jonathan Keycross

Aw come on! Now on who am I gonna focus all my hate!?

Oh well, I just looked at the trailer. The game looks more like S4 League or PSO  rather than MML3 though…

    • Testsubject909

I feel like putting up a link to the Shining Finger video just because of that all of my hate portion…

  • SirRichard

The cancellation of MML3 is going to haunt Capcom for years.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Yep because people don’t know how to let things go.

      • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

And because people excel at being a bunch of self entitled pricks. “Oh woe is me, a company does not release a sequel to a franchise I love! Clearly they are pissing all over my rights!”~.

        • Testsubject909

“Oh woe is me, I’m troubled by people who’re voicing their distress and it annoys me so much so that I don’t care what their reasons are and I’ll just shove all of them in one stereotypical whiny image to make myself feel good about hating them all, clearly they’re intellectually inferior in every manner to me”

Is sort of what I got from what you said.

  • isfuturebright

This EX-Troopers looks like won’t be coming to the US after all

    • usagi_san

Why do you say that? And even if doesn’t, for those who are really want this game and have a PS3 will just import it. Simples.

  • usagi_san

The trailer in the last article had caught my eye. The only question left to answer depending on localization will be: PS3 or 3DS.

The PS3 would be my first port of call, but depending on how it is implemented on the 3DS, I could go for the latter of both.

  • Dont want it capcom. forget everything about you. You show the series that MADE ME A GAMER some love and ill try to repair your image in my mind.

  • Solomon_Kano

It disappoints me that this needed clarification in the first place. People reach for any reason to whine about Capcom’s “mistreatment” of Mega Man, be it putting the “wrong” version of him in a game or putting out a game that supposedly resembles his. Seriously.

  • I can’t believe the manchildish responses about any of this.

HOLY GUAC, like this is why I don’t usually read comment threads. You guys are a bunch of babies.

  • Bullshit.  Same fucking game.
