Soul Sacrifice Has Some Spells That Don’t Use Your Spine

By Spencer . May 28, 2012 . 10:30am

Most of the discussion about Soul Sacrifice has been about spells that force players to sacrifice their body parts. You can gouge out your eye to create laser shooting eyes or explode with bones by casting Gungnir. Other spells aren’t nearly as painful!

In fact, you can create rock armor by "sacrificing" a stone. You can also create a golem or flame armor by transmuting lava.

If you really want enemies to burn Salamander is your spell. Cast this and flames ignite your body and engulf enemies. After the spell is finished, your wizard is left with severe burns.

Excalibur creates a deadly sword… from your organs and spinal cord. While you can rend enemies, the caster dies after invoking Excalibur since well you don’t have a spine.

I’m loving this game THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS^infinity much.

They are definitely going to talk about it at E3, right? Please let it be so. :D

  • No No

If there’s a game that would make me get a Vita it might be this.

  • XGriever

if you die after invoking Excalibur whats the point of using it lol i cant see your character running around without a spine O.O though these spells are inventive and intresting, looking forward to seeing some more

    • Dyne

I say it used by someone in your party, giving up your life for the group.

      • Ronald Bixler

And what an awesome way to go.

        • Testsubject909

Tch… guys, I don’t have any healing potions left and our healer just logged out, we’re low on health, and this bastard boss just won’t go down… Well, it was good knowing you.

*reaches inside mouth, grabs spine, pulls out huge sword and goes LEEERROOYYYY JENKINS!*

  • http://www.cubiz.x10.mx/ Auragar

So cringe worthy. lol I like the uniqueness of it, but I don’t understand the whole spine/excalibur thing. You die after using it? How can that work? Also why is his spine so long and thick? (That’s what she said.)

It probably won’t be worth it in solo play, but with a group it could be one player dying so the rest can complete the level.  Not sure how many people will be willing to give up all their rewards and permanently disfigure their character, but its always an option.

  • SirRichard

The sacrifice idea is a really good one, it adds a level of resource gathering and management on top of simply getting the spells themselves.

They better announce this for release outside Japan next week. I can’t see why they wouldn’t, the PSV desperately needs games.

    • usagi_san

And a new IP to boot! People are complaining there aren’t any new games just ports, etc. Well, here’s a new IP for those people; go out and support, my fellow Siliconerans.

EDIT: The “support” thing isn’t directed only to the readers but gamers in general.

      • http://www.cubiz.x10.mx/ Auragar

        I’ll definitely be supporting it.

    • http://www.cubiz.x10.mx/ Auragar

I hope they will and E3 is a very likely place to do it. And I do have to agree that while I do love my Vita so very much it does need more good/great games.

  • Dyne

think any one can get by using the non body parts spells only?

    • http://www.cubiz.x10.mx/ Auragar

It would probably be a lot harder. You probably could do it.

      • Ronald Bixler

It would be creepy if to use some of the nature spells, you had to grab a fish from a river/pond or a rabbit/squirrel/snake/etc. from the ground and use it as fuel. Or what if you could use NPC humans…

  • Hraesvelgr

Sacrificing a stone? So, to keep in with all the other stuff in this game, do they mean like a kidney stone or something?

Also, this eye gouging and spinal cord pulling business makes it seem like the game is trying a bit too hard…

  • Göran Isacson

I presume that the spells which sacrifice your own bodyparts will be far more powerful than those that simply require the sacrifice of natural resources, but now I’m also curious if the eye-spell means giving up one eye and you can only use it twice, like how Excalibur can only be used once and then you die. Are there many spells with those kind of limitations, or is it limited to just the super-big boom-badass ones?

    • Ronald Bixler

The eye spell you can cast more than twice, you just have to reclaim your eyes from the demon your father sold them to. That would be an interesting cameo. I am Hyakkimaru, I am here to reclaim the stolen parts of my body. I am a cursed spell caster and… could I have your prosthetic eye if you’re done with it please?

      • http://twitter.com/WarbossAohd Warboss Aohd

woz dat da game wit da demonz an’ da samurai man wif all da prostheticz goin’ on a demon killin’ spree with da little kid?

        Blood Will Tell woz it?

        • Ronald Bixler

Yes. Based on the manga Dororo, written by the same guy that came up with Astro Boy and Black Jack.

  • Ronald Bixler

    How to cast:
A meteor spell: Dive from a high point and land face first.
A confusion spell: Grab your head with both hands and turn it 180 degrees.
A silence spell: Take a needle and thread and use them to sew your mouth shut.
A darkness spell: Take your forefinger and thumb and jam them into your eyes up to the base knuckles.
A poison spell: Ingest a vial of arsenic. Mmm, almonds.
A petrification spell: Dig a hole, jump into it, and have a fellow caster fill it with cement or concrete.
An instant death spell (for the enemy and the caster): Take your hand, thrust it into your body from under the ribcage, take hold of your heart, and squeeze.

    • Testsubject909

An eroge spell: Sacrifice your privates.

      • Ronald Bixler

         Step 1: Grab a deli slicer…

        • Testsubject909

Step 2: Be smart and grab someone else to sacrifice.

  • AzureNova

    Please get localized soon.

  • Ronald Bixler

Grinding for items, levels, what have you in this game must be a real bi***.

    • Testsubject909

Or to get back your body parts… Actually I just thought up one more.

An arrow-repelling spell: Create a shield by sacrificing your kneecap.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-de-Groodt/100000446926616 Mike de Groodt

Saw what you did there, Yes I did

  • Testsubject909

That mild red glow from the guy holding his spinal cord excalibur blade…
It looks like a Black Phantom…

Just the thought of a Demon’s/Dark Soul type game on my Vita just… oh, pants… need to change them…

  • https://twitter.com/#!/JadenPrinceton C.Guzman

    I need to hibernate until winter time, I can’t stand the wait for this ;;
By the way, in the clip we saw of the caster using Excalibur, they didn’t die until after the enemy is defeated, but is it possible to die before that “time limit” if there is one (excluding any hits received from the enemy)?

  • Solomon_Kano

The more I see of this game… Lord, this is gonna be sweet.

  • Domii

    GOTY

  • 猫 黒

That’s… definitely a new take on Excalibur.  Hopefully you get a railgun finisher like in the Fate series, or it’s not really worth sacrificing your spine for.

  • Marco Tinè

The sooner they get it to Europe (and market it as the stepchild of Demon’s Souls and Monster Hunter), the better.

  • ToshiChan

So if I sacrifice my penis will it be a sword or a cannon? I can see this working both ways

or a gunblade… that could work

    • Mister_Nep

The problem with it being a sword is that if it touches another sword it’ll deflate instantly.

      • Valtiel Ikari

there is no word to describe the amount of win you have…

  • http://www.fogalchemist.com/ caleb1993

I’m already planning on saving up for a Vita, but this will put it much closer to the top of my list of priorities if it gets an official localization announcement. The entire concept is gruesome, yet awesome and makes me excited to see it come to fruition. Hopefully E3 will have more news for those of us that are eager to see this.

  • neetyneety

Huh. You’d think he’d die instantly taking out his spine and organs, or hell, just collapse ’cause he doesn’t have a spine… but anyway. I’m actually thoroughly excited for this game, sacrifice concept sounds interesting and I really hope this gets localized.
