Ubisoft’s Wii U Exclusive Shooter, ZombiU, Appears Rather Tragic

By Ishaan . June 4, 2012 . 4:44pm

Ubisoft released a trailer for their exclusive Wii U title, ZombiU, which they debuted at their E3 press conference this afternoon. It looks like a rather tragic affair with scenes of various people suffering amidst a zombie outbreak. Take a look at it below, courtesy of IGN:

ZombiU isn’t actually 100% new. At last year’s E3, Ubisoft showed a Wii U FPS titled Killer Freaks From Outer Space. That game appears to have turned into ZombiU. Ubisoft plan to release the game sometime during the Wii U’s launch window.

    It looks…actually pretty great

  • SirRichard

It was pretty tragic up until that last guy knocking a zombie’s head off, anyway.

The name confounds me, it really does. Here’s hoping this isn’t a bait ‘n’ switch like it was with Dead Island, though again that last guy seems to imply it won’t be ultra-serious.

    • brian yep

I think it has this name because of something involving Ubisoft being a french  company, I’m pretty sure zombi is zombie in french + U, as in Wii U.
They probably figured it could be a success like Dead Island if they took a similar approach, and give a Last of Us vibe with that song considering Last of Us had a trailer with a song like that it looks like it was well received.

  • Suicunesol

Well, it’s a great preview. But no gameplay.

  • Rohan Viajar

can’t say much about the game till gameplay or story concept.

  • Godmars

By the end tag trailer this sounds like a how long you can last in one instance of an outbreak. Like having to make your way out of an office building, mall or block area as apposed to out of a city.

Promising if they can get interactive environments and/or on the fly events.

  • Mago Iichi

I already like it better than Killer Freaks. No stupid Rabbid mutated bs.

  • shadowseer

I wonder if that zombie game footage from Wii U Pre-E3 conference (with the guy who looks like Simon Pegg going online asking for help and stuff), is this game.
I’m hoping this’ll turn out good.

if this would be it then probably Non-specific Action Figure approves of it.

  • Tom_Phoenix

This game is basically Ubisoft jumping on a bandwagon that has gotten old a long time ago. It’s tough not to be sick and tired of zombies at this point, especially since so many games revolve around them or at least include some type of zombie mode.

Having said that, you know what would be preety cool? If this game allowed you to play as one of the Queens Guards. Those guys are awesome!

    “ZombiU isn’t actually 100% new.”

  • Juuu

Definitely getting shades of Dead Island, which isn’t a bad thing. o: I like the choice of music they picked, creates a real disconnect…Also, the freeze-framed moments were nifty too. However, I would’ve liked to see how it actually played. Perhaps we’ll see more later in the week, or the game is just THAT early in development. :x

Regardless of what this is, Nintendo should be happy. That big “EXCLUSIVELY FOR WII U” message is what they need to make their console really shine, particularly at this press conference. Yes, the multiplatform games are good and all, and may be special to someone who only owned a Wii, but many gamers, myself included, already have other systems that titles such as Assassins Creed III and whatnot will be on. Thus, they aren’t really system sellers. That was also a problem the Wii had, imho, a lack of strong exclusives. However, the ones that DID exist, like Muramasa, Xenoblade, and in earlier times No More Heroes, were some of the system’s best. So bring on the exclusives.

Also…”ZombiU.” Zombie. You. Could a theme of this be the player character falling victim to the virus?! I love gimmicks like that in my zombie fiction! There DID appear to be scenes of the virus taking over between the freeze frames. ;p That’d be an awesome addition to the tension and horror of the apocolyptic setting!

I personally primarilly purchase Nintendo systems for the first party titles.

      • Guest

I buy it for the 3rd party titles to be that hipster guy

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

That trailer wasn’t at all like Dead Island’s. Nope. Not at all. No siree.

  • Solomon_Kano

Zombies? Meh. Fighting zombies in England? As the Queen’s Guards? With machine guns that have bayonets? That’s pretty awesome. I’ll keep an eye on this. Hopefully it lives up to the trailer. Lord knows that last zombie game didn’t…

    • We need to see waht happen out of US and JP lol…

  • Kebo Martin

Will this be a rail shooter or kinda like Dead Island? I’m good either way.

  • Kinda disappointed that the mildly intriguing premise of a shooter inspired by classic B-movie creature features has “evolved” into yet another entry in the mercilessly played-out zombie apocalypse genre, complete with now-mandatory melodramatic trailer.

  • I thought they were going to play Radiohead’s Karma Police for a second.

    • Actually, that would have fit pretty well with the trailer, I think.

  • Zertan

Unless I see gameplay I am not going to care about playing this game.

  • Rishtopher

I like this trailer a lot. I’m just not a fan of the name. Not that it really matters.

  • takopako

omg…this looks interesting. its nice to see that the wii u wont be afraid of blood and suicide. lol

  • Apache_Chief

Man what a bad name for a game. I’m lucky I even clicked on this; ZombiU sounds like a tech demo game featuring Mii zombies.

  • I wonder if the title is a pun on Zombie and Wii U, or if it’s a reference to the Zombi film series.

    • Krisi92

Zombie is just “Zombi” in many European languages, like Italian, Spanish, and Hungarian.

  • ZombieUguu~, Developed by Key.

    • Göran Isacson

Oh God. Now I’m imagining a visual novel about sad zombie girls. “It’s the post-apocalypse, but just because hearts have stopped pumping blood… doesn’t mean they cannot be broken”. “Oh MC-kun, I… I made you this brain-bento. I know I’m not very good at cooking, but… but would you still eat it?”

Except it’s all told with “UUUUGGHS” instead. My god. Somewhere out there this is probably getting made.

  • Scallion

Remember when Dead Island did this and was immensely disappointing?

    • s07195

I knew I wasn’t the only one remembering that trailer.

EDIT: And then I checked the comments below.

  • The trailer makes me feel depressed and sad and the song was not helping either but was really good, I hope the game does not look stupid as the commercial makes it to be.

  • Funny how there’s no warning at all about gore, yet when you try and watch a trailer for Mass Effect 3 that has a VERY brief bed scene in it you’re asked to login to verify you’re old enough. Funny old world we’ve created where sex is bad and decapitating zombies is perfectly fine :)

    • boundries_san

While in Japan in almost the total opposite lol.^^ Hentai can be found everywhere there while for violence, it is a rare thing there.^^

  • Depressing as hell…. And the song…..
This is kinda lk tht trailer of Dead Island…..

Speaking of which, did the DI game show wht happen to the parents in the trailer?

    • Zertan

      Yes but with continuity error:
You immediately find the two parents in their hotel room. Except that there isn’t anything that shows that there was a zombie outbreak in the room. The window where their daughter was thrown out wasn’t broken either.

  • boundries_san

I kinda love how this game go.^^

Hope that i will also be able to play as the Queen’s Guard there.^^

  • Göran Isacson

Dead Island fooled me once, shame on them. This fools me twice, shame on me.

Okay, in it’s favor it’s not like it promises to be a superemotional event or anything, but still. If your zombie game is going to be action, at least do us the courtesy of showing action. Don’t make us feel for your game, if the game itself won’t try to make us feel for it.
