Persona 4: Arena Has An Option For English And Japanese Voiceovers

By Spencer . June 5, 2012 . 12:46am

Atlus announced Persona 4: Arena will have two language tracks in North America. Players can switch between the original Japanese voiceovers or select a new English dub.

"While it remains a feature we are unable to add in every one of our releases due to any number of factors, we are incredibly excited to be able to offer our fans the frequently requested dual language option in as highly anticipated a title as Persona 4 Arena," commented Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Atlus.  "Persona 4 Arena represents one of the biggest investments in Atlus history, in addition to one of the most ambitious collaborations with a developer as esteemed as Arc System Works, and as such we have spared no expense in endeavoring to ensure that the final North American release lives up to our proud tradition of quality and to our fans’ lofty expectations for us."

Persona 4: Arena is slated for release on August 7 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Stay tuned to Siliconera for more coverage of Persona 4: Arena and Atlus’ other titles. For now, check out the new E3 trailer.

  • YES! This is my dream come true! Finally I won’t have to download pirated roms with an undub, now it’s time to get physical!

    • Or ya know you coulda..I dunno import the game instead of pirating it. Just a thought.

      • And pay 70$ for it (Games in Japan are dead expensive), at least 15$ for shipping and then extra duty costs (25% of the items’ original price)? No way, my budget isn’t THAT high. I think 40-50$ is a good price for a fighting game like this!^^

        • But you considered pirating a game because there might not have been a japanese dub which means Atlus/ASW get zilch outta you. It made you souind kinda petty and entitled.

          • Ryu Roots

If they butcher the game with dubbing, it’s not like they deserve the money anyway.  I was going to pass the localized version of this over unless I knew it’d have the originals.

          • Not gonna debate with you on whether or not dubs are bad. It’s fine if you’re passing on buying entirely because the dub doesn’t sit with you (if somewhat …over-dramtic).

Also I wasn’t aware that dubbing a game with english voices invalidates any and all monetary gains a company should make for the time and effort they put into making a game for its fans. Must have missed that memo.

          • ThatBlackGuy

So you’re saying they don’t deserve money for having dubbing in the game. Really

          • deleted

          • M’iau M’iaut

Any part pirating is not something discussed on our forums. Please refrain from such conversations in any future postings.

  • Smart move, Atlus.

  • Congratz Dub haters! You are a winner!

    • mirumu

As are dub lovers it appears. Congrats to everyone.

  • ..

    • Nitraion

      What’s wrong you seem upset?

      • I posted a comment twice and couldn’t delete it. *sweatdrops*

        • Nitraion

Lol “…” is not meaningless XD
you can always “oops dobpost” or something
any looking forward for the game yeah atlus deserved to win “fastest localization of the game” award XD

  • Dynami

I really, really liked the Persona 4 dub. I wouldn’t undub it any day of the week.

Unfortunately, that quality’s clearly not maintained in this game, so I’m thankful that we have a dual audio option this time around.

Doubly unfortunate is the fact that I’ll have to suffer through Kugimiya Rie in every match. Ugh.

    • mirumu

      You’re maining Rise I assume?

      • Kevadu

Rise gives commentary, she’s not playable.  Which does mean she’s *always* there…

        • Ryan Baer

Which I’m happy about. Hearing my favorite seiyuu every match is the best part about this news.

      • Dynami

Rise isn’t playable – much like in the original game, she spectates and commentates during gameplay.

Since I don’t speak Japanese, I can’t really tell what she’s saying from match videos so that’s about as specific as I can get.

        • mirumu

Ah, makes sense. I’d been avoiding spoilers so had largely kept away from the videos.

    • Nitraion

I thought There is sub what she saying?

  • Nitraion

    Haha it’s win-win solution
Edit: what’s with the Title lol so hilarious…

  • YES. Thank you Atlus. *whispers* iloveyou

    • DanteJones

You should tell them how you feel in 600 emails or more.

  • Andrew Austin

    LOL @ Yu’s opening.

    • neocatzon

and no one deny their introductions

      • Chie and Kanji’s titles are a hoot.

  • monk_123

  • epy

Great news. I don’t believe anyone can complain about this.

  • Asura

I’m gonna say both the English dub and the Japanese dub of P4 both have a few voices that are awful. Otherwise, both are fairly average to above average.

I miss the days when I couldn’t tell that most Japanese dubs are also terrible. Back then it was a sweet existence, and now both English and Japanese voices tend to often sounds like nails on a chalkboard.

  • HenDarou

Thank you Atlus! While Yu’s English voice sound decent enough, it just has to be the Japanese one, that stoic voice that so perfectly augments his poker face…

  • Vadim Merzhey

    Thank goodness

  • Pipiskin99

oh my god, it’s the best news because i was glad having modded ps2 so i could play undubs even though i own the games, that’s such a big relief lol

  • Tien Ron

OH no bad decision for giving fans dual voices, now fans are going to expect them to do it all the time, oh well nice addition i guess
i just hope fans and people don’t get use to this

  • Nirun Rangraengjit

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Teddie has a new voice actor…
Ah well, I guess Sam Riegal is gonna hafta do if we can’t get Dave Wittenberg.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong but I think Chie has a new voice actress too.

  • FullMetalAlcopop

Well, I’m glad this is an option, seeing as they slaughtered Chie’s voice and Teddie’s isn’t great either. I’d still much rather have the originals back, but, eh. >_>

  • thaKingRocka

Persona 4 is one of the few games with a voice acting cast that I like.

  • MrJechgo

While it’s true that Johnny Yong Bosch indeed voiced Yu Narukami in the original game (mainly for calling the personas’ names), it feels… a bit weird to hear him talk normally now, buit at least they got the actor back.

Yosuke sounds like Yuri Lowenthal, Chie is voiced by Erin Fitzgerald (who confirmed it herself a while ago), Yukiko sounds like Amanda Winn Lee, but it’s hard to tell becasue her english voice was always soft in P4, Kanji is voiced by Troy Baker ^o^, Naoto sounds like Susan Dilian, but it’s hard to tell too, and Teddie sounds more like Sam Riegal instead of Dave Wittenberg.

I’m curious to know why Wittenberg wasn’t chosen for Teddie again. It can’t be because he’s not in the voice acting business anymore, like Tracey Rooney who doesn’t voice anymore… because he still voices regular and new characters, i.e. he still voices Kakashi in Naruto Shipuuden. Was he just unavailable for the game ? I wonder…

BTW, we clearly see Aigis, Akihiko, Mitsuru and Elizabeth… and yet we don’t get to see their intros and hear them talk to see if Karen Strassmen, Liam O’Brian and Tara Platt reprise their roles ? Come on now, both of you, Arc System Works and Atlus… although Strassmen did confirm during a convention panel that she has been recording lines for both Aigis and Nanako recently, and I can’t think of any other games where both of these characters appear than P4A.

    • I saw somewhere that Sam Riegel really is voicing Teddie, it was either IMDB or another site.

    • oops shoulda read you’re comment all the way through.

    • originally people thought strassmen was recording for the anime dub but she already confirmed (on facebook i believe?) that she was back for arena.

  • komiko12

Hehe. This is a good feature especially for games set in Japan.
It would be funny if one would keep changing the dubs back and forth from Japanese to English for the sake of comparison.

  • I wonder what factors are preventing them from doing games in Dual Audio? Disk Space? Money? Those are the only things that come into mind.

Though when it comes to VA’s I prefer Japanese VA’s, sometimes cutesy characters when voiced by ENG VA’s sound… um… awkward. They might even be able to cut expenses if they just subtitle cut scenes and translate menus. But that would probably upset ENG VA’s. :|

  • RmanX1000

Ok so, Chie,Yukiko (i think) and Naoto have new english VAs. Teddie as well. I wonder about Mitsuru, Akihiko, and Elizabeth :P… Anyway, im way more excited for this game! Excellent trailer ATLUS!

    • yoUNg_grOUp568

no, yukiko and naoto have the same voice actor. Only chie and teddie were changed

  • Beautiful Daisy ♥

Thank goodness for this~ I was growing tired of people complaining about the lack of dual audio. I’m personally fine with just English audio (great cast), but it’s nice to have this option ^_^

  • Istillduno

Thank goodness they’ve done this, really should be a standard for all voiced jp games by 2012.

  • Atlus Love increased to 9000~!

The announcer sounds like that of Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter’s.

  • Luna Kazemaru

dub haters get you wee*** oh my got to control myself…Meh saw this coming seeing ASW has some part in this game and they do it for BB.

  • Come on, wht wrong with the dub? I’ve heard even worse ones….. *OH WELL* HATERS GONNA HATE.gif

  • LOLtastic titles combined with Hiimdaisy gags:

Wage slave in the boonies by the day, hero by night! Captain Resentiment, Yosuke Hanamura!!!

    Yosuke: “I have too pee!”

A spunky dragon with deadly legs! The carnivore who discarded womanhood,
    Chie Satonaka!!!

‘Please escort me to the ring, my prince~!’ The unconquerable snow black, Yukiko Amagi!!!

    Yukiko: “And I’m uncomfortable~! :3”

Blooming roses and bulging muscles~!The Bloodcurdling Beefcake Emperor, Kanji Tatsumi!!!

Kanji: “…You sayin’ I like dudes?!”

    • Nerroth

I think it’s “Wage slave in the boonies by day…”

And for Chie, it might be “legs”, as opposed to “lace”. What with the kicking and such.

      •  Hey, thanks for the clarifications, the announcer in the trailer at some parts can be hard to understand. Or just my ear… ><

    • Revorse

You know what’s funny? I consider those comics a part of the whole persona experience.

  • Zonic505

Totally digging that announcer & the hilarious titles.

Hmmm, considering we’re getting both voice dubs, maybe they could add something where we can choose which characters speak which language?

  • Nathan_GreeneIV

Hmm I dont really mind it just being english dub or not really. As long as I get to play then YESH! Besides as long everyone enjoys a game for what it is, is what truly matters right?

    • Luna Kazemaru

You would be suprize how dub haters wouldn’t buy a game that doesn’t have this option broken logic I know. Besides most the people here commenting about it will most likely not even buy the game. I wish more people thought like you tho. :3

      • Nathan_GreeneIV

People who think like me? Hahaha Im just too naive actually. Like I play games solely for well enjoyment. I like english dub and Japanese dub (Because Im part japanese) but yeah.

        • Luna Kazemaru

           >Naive for playing games for enjoyment and nothing more.

          Nah you are just fine.

          • Nathan_GreeneIV

            Thanks! :D

        • This is totally the attitude you should have….playing just to enjoy not nitpicking over dubs vs subs…

  • Speedo Redempteur

    Finally some japaneses voices …

It would had been lazyness if atlus couldn’t even manage to that for a fighting game.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Since when did not adding the option of duel audio get counted as being lazy? If they can’t afford the license they can’t afford it….That broke logic.

      • Speedo Redempteur

        for a fighting game ?

Dualvoice became the standard ages ago ..
Give me a major release fighting game without dual voices ?Or with english voices only ?

Atlus USA is notorious for dubbing everything without giving us the options is their major releases ..sometimes they don’t have space but there are cases where they just don’t care about the japanese dub and were lazy about it …

And not affording the license is nothing but an escuse especially since i don’t see why they can’t have a deal with atlus japan about it…

        • Luna Kazemaru

If you think not affording the license is an excuse then you really do not know how it works….

          • Speedo Redempteur

I know how it works…the problem is that they don’t even try’s obvious they prefer their cast of actors and their work to localise that’s all ….

Licensing issues is a problem , yes . Many publishers that localise have the same problems yet atlus have an escuse EACH TIME..
-We don’t have enough space (ok why not ? )
Then you have more space and then i get :
-it takes lot of ressources from the original team to do dual voices ( true but it can be worked out in most cases )
Even if this step is cleared , i get :
-But the voices cost a lot !!

My question is : If it’s so hard , why why “nis, xseed” and many others are able to it yet atlus can’t ? they are on the same market of “niche” games yet atlus DUBs everytime..

Seriously , if for a fighting game ( the easiest to do ) they couldn’t bring dual voices, then Atlus would have been nothing short of lazy.

i’m glad they did bring dual voices … this shoudln’t had been that hard especially with arc system works helping.

          • Sevyne

And Atlus pumps out far more games of a much higher budget than both of your example publishers combined. NIS for example makes most of there money on endless amounts of DLC and their game (though enjoyable) are usually very low budget titles. Saying Atlus doesn’t try is really ignorant when you have no clue what goes on behind the scenes.

          • Speedo Redempteur

Continue to call me ignorant…i don’t care
They are except for persona on a niche market WHEN it comes to localisation.

Is growlanser, code of princess, gungir & dragon crown such high budget titles ?
            they are not ..

i’m loving you guys for defending atlus .. the fact is and will remain that if they couldn’t do it for a fighting game , that would had been total incompetence or lazyness.

Now they did and it’s great for everyone …

          • Luna Kazemaru

The guy below pretty much summed it up for me honestly I’m not saying this is not to be expected from a fighting game I mean I KNEW this would happen because of asw backing them but yeah not the case all the time. Can’t blame then and say they are lazy.

          • Luna Kazemaru

When was I ever defending atlus? I wasn’t just speaking for this game only I was talking about any game that goes through localization. If its incompetence or laziness for anyone not to do duel auto explain arcana heart…Let alone Fate/Extra…

          • Speedo Redempteur

            @Luna Kazemaru

            About arcana hearts or fate/extra

I thought the voices were too expensive ??? Witch is it ?

money is an issue but is not ALWAYS the issue …You’re stating that i don’t know about localisation when you’re doing worse than me.
If atlus is big enough to do so many localisations , then the problem lies elsewhere than “MONEY”,”MONEY”…
If you can’t realize this then you’re guilible.

        • Sevyne

It’s not about laziness, it’s about their budget. It is not cheap to license dual audio when that means they’d pretty much be paying both jp and eng VAs. Atlus USA isn’t some monster corporation like Activision or EA that can just throw money around like it’s nothing. I’d love Dual Audio in all of my games, but I understand that it is not a possibility.

          • Speedo Redempteur

You don’t have to be a monster corporation to do dual voices..
Heck… Some monster corporations ( sony , namco ) don’t care in some games … it’s not about money ONLY …
The only reason it doesn’t happen is when the team behind the localisation feels that the japanese voices won’t be missed (or won’t be requested enough ) that it’ll be a critic afterwards ( or if they are proud of their english work they don’t care )

            Such naivety …

          • Sevyne

Except your whole point falls apart if you ever actually visited the Atlus boards where the Atlus team are in constant interactions with the people (and I don’t just mean random hired social media spokesmen). It’s been talked about dozens upon dozens of times over there. They have been pretty straightforward with the fanbase on those boards about what goes into the localization and they are fully aware that the majority want dual audio whenever it is possible. To say they may think that the audio won’t be missed is ridiculous. You are accusing a company blindly on your own assumptions without as much as looking for yourself. That is why I say your statements are ignorant below.

I may not always agree with the decision making over there, but this topic really isn’t up for much of a debate and they are always pretty clear to why they are or are not doing something.

          • Speedo Redempteur

I’m visiting the atlus board since ages … it’s been years since i follow atlus and i follow other publishers boards as well …
“To say they may think that the audio won’t be missed is ridiculous”
Yet they don’t do it … Have you been on their foroms ? How many subjects on the matter do you need ?

All we have is escuses , each time.. and i’m tired of it …
If this wasn’t a arc system works Game AND a fighting game, you can BET we wouldn’t have dual voices.
Even on PS3, even on VITA with more storage , they will continue and give you another escuse and since you don’t matter , you will accept it …

there are moments where dual voice isn’t possible… i can accept it ..for example there is no space on UMDs … Ok fair point & valid reason but you can’t have escuses every time.

  • meganeshounen

At first, I almost pounded my PC table in delight over the article title, thinking that future Atlus games on the Vita might be good enough to include dual language settings… then I blinked only to see that it’s P4:Arena, not P4:Golden.

Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed (entirely my own fault, yes, I know). But at least I know Atlus is still somewhat willing to give their consumers/fans what they want, like this.

That, and at least I didn’t wreck my PC table in the process. Ah well.

    • Nikolai Sumcad

I have to admit, I thought it was ‘Golden’ that had the option too, as I recall reading an article here that already stated ‘Arena’ having the dual language.

  • Cephrien

Blazblue has dual audio, so I’m not too surprised.

I’ll probably play through story mode in English though– then switch over the Japanese when I’m spending hours upon hours playing online.

    •  That’s a great way to do it. The best of both worlds, without causing a mental breakdown when P4:G inevitably doesn’t have the Japanese audio track with it. You thought this out very well.

  • ivanchu77

Thanks Atlus, I hope japanese audio option become more common in the future

  • It’s a fighting game. I had no doubts about it.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Good for those who want it. Still gonna stick with the english track though. So much better.

  • Narukami has a sister complex? Is the announcer asleep?

    • monk_123

It’s something the Japanese came up with. The announcer is just taking a jab at everyone. :)

    • LynxAmali

      Apparently, he’s a sister-con.

      Blame Japan.

    • Lunar_Outcast

Everyone has a sister complex for Nanako.

  • Star

    Thank goodness.

    •  Why do you say that? The dub is pretty good.

  • Zonic505

Here’s the other titles that characters have based on the trailer.

    Teddie: The Beast in Heat
    Akihiko: The Two-Fisted Protein Junkie
Mitsuru: The Imperious Queen of Executions
    Aigis: The Heartless Armed Angel
    Labrys: Yasogami’s Steel Council President
    Elizabeth: The Ultimate Elevator Attendant

    • Wow at Teddie’s. 100 percent fits him. That’s one horny bear.

  • Elemiel

Rather split over this, but then again I’m not really interested in getting this game. But I suppose it would make sense for this game to have JAP audio since it’s a fighting game and not a 60+(?) RPG with a ton of voice work and thus costs less?
(Apologies, I’m not really familiar with the localizing business)

    • that and compared to the ps2 on which persona 3 and 4 were originally released there’s a lot more room for dual audio. that was the biggest issue with it when it first came out; there wasn’t enough space on the disk with all that dialogue

  • Darkrise
  • SolidusSnake

That’s cool, but now people are going to get even more whiny and butthurt every time a major Atlus game is localized without dual audio :3

  • cj_iwakura

Good for the J-lovers, but I’m still all for the dub, as long as Mitsuru/Elizabeth’s VA is back.(Same person.

    • Sevyne

So far I’ve not seen any confirmation on Tara Platt, but we can hope!

      • TheSquishyTanker

I actually sent her an email regarding this, I’ll update if I get a reply.
But, considering she’s married to Yuri Lowenthall (Yosuke), I think she may be returning as well.

        • Sevyne

Well in that case it’s probably a safe bet. I can’t say for sure 100%, but I’m almost certain Altus managed to get most of the cast back. Just Chie and Teddie are new ones and that also goes for P4 Golden.

  • Don’t really care about dual audio in a fighting game. Call me when they add it in P4 The Golden.

  • JazzWithAttitude

My god,i loved the Protagonist voice but…Everyone seens a bit different…

    • yoUNg_grOUp568

only chie and teddie are different, but everyone sounds the same to me

      • Sevyne

Yukiko’s voices sounds a bit off from the original to me even though I’m pretty sure it’s the same VA. Could just be a bad line they used here, but something just doesn’t sound right about it.

I am really interested in hearing more of Chie’s new VA though. It was really the only English voice I had a little bit of an issue with in P4 since she sounded way too old. So far from the little bit here the new one sounds a bit more fitting. Teddie sounded alright too here.

Also Naoto sounding awesome as usual.

        • ShadowScipio

Everyone always says she sounded too old and I just don’t understand.  I was in highschool when P4 first came out and I liked her voice because it sounded so real, like she could be one of my classmates.  Others sounded too “anime teenager” to me.

          Maybe I’m just weird.  T_T

          • Sevyne

Well that’s my point really. The VA that did Chie wasn’t bad, but it was really out of place. They were supposed to sound “anime teenager” because that’s kinda what they are. In that setting Chie sounded more like a mid to late 20’s female and that just didn’t fit right.

          • ShadowScipio

Oh, well, I can see where you’re coming from then.  I’ve never really been too big a fan of the high pitched anime girl voice thing and Chie was a refreshing change of pace.  I guess I didn’t really think about the contrast. >_>

The new trailer doesn’t really give you too good a look at her new voice, it’s too shouty.  Need some regular dialogue to judge.  I’m warming up to what was revealed though, a little bit.

        • yoUNg_grOUp568

think this is a fast paced fighting game, so yukiko won’t have such a soft voice like she did in P4

  • raymk

This has been common knowledge for awhile, oh this is just the official statement even though it was an atlus rep that confirmed it awhile back.

  • DongT

i really needed to see this, for some reason i  thought that having chie and teddie with new va’s was gonna totally bug me but i guess not cuz everyone sounds great!

  • (This time around I think I will use a different joke)

EDIT: The reason why I repost this is I prefer to seperate jokes and on-matter stuff into diff. post and some jokes are bad….I’m sorry if I annoyed you.

Kou: This is not my Chie!!! Oh well *polish (basket)balls*
Saki: Awww, tht nice Yosuke, but I still hate your guts even in heaven.
Ai: I can finally hear him talk!! *Spam record button*
Adachi, Namatame, Izanami: WT# R U GUYS DOING IN THERE!?

  • cj_iwakura

I think the reason this is possible is more because of Arc System Works, as an afterthought, since it’s a common feature in BlazBlue.

Shame this wasn’t viable for Growlanser. Ah well.

  • Announcer: And now I will make crackpot joke intros about the combatants at everyone’s expense….except Elizabeth because I like my nads exactly where they are located!

Yosuke: Critical Hit to the nads evaded!

    • Mitsuru: And we are being left out/forgotten!?
      Aki: Ya dumb broad.
Aigis: Who wants to chase butterflies with RPG?
      Mitsuru, Aki: NO.

  • XiaomuArisu

I like the english dub, nothing to complain about.
BTW can it be that Teddies new VA is Kuririn from DBZ abridged and the anouncer is Ragna from BlazBlue?

    • MCoelho

I also think the anouncer is Ragna, he’s a announcer in a Disgaea 4 trailer too.(spoiler he’s also Fenrich)

Teddie’s VA is Sam Riegel, worked as Donatello and Phoenix Wright in UMVC3, i don’t know if he’s Kuririn tough.

      • XiaomuArisu

Nah I dont think that sam voices abridged KuririnXDBut they almost sound the same.
Still remember the Disgaea 4 trailer.
