Paper Mario: Sticker Star Trailer Gives An Updated Look At The Game

Nintendo have published a new trailer for Paper Mario: Sticker Star, scheduled for release on the Nintendo 3DS this fall. Sticker Star has stickers for the player to find hidden around the environment, and these can be used to open up new paths or be used as items in battle. Take a look at the trailer below:

My only question is how will battle work if you run out of sticks during a boss fight?

    • boundries_san

Maybe some stickers is considered as normal attack? And the will be restock for us?

      Like the first iron jump?

    • Ben Sylvia

I got 3 words for ya.

      • Herok ♞

         wheres the third?

      • Nyandroid

         Are you quoting Phil there!?

    • James Beatty

Maybe a Chain of memories type system where it gets reloaded for you?

  • Xapth

Aaaaand partners are nowhere to be seen.

Oh well. The game still looks like loads of fun, and I’m sure I’ll have a blast playing it.

Maybe I’ll get my true RPG Paper Mario 3 for Wii U in the future.

    • There is one confirmed partner so far and that is Kersti the sticker fairy, she can’t be used in battle though.

      • I wouldn’t consider her a proper partner then. I imagine when most people say partner they’re thinking of somebody who actually fights alongside Mario.

    • Ben Sylvia

I’m assuming you’ll get some stickers that let you summon characters to help you.

What I hope is there are some that are like Final Fantasy summons with screen filling attacks.

      Like say… King Bob-Omb Sticker?
Or let us obtain stickers that summon the bosses in the game after we beat them?

If they do something even remotely similar to that, I think I can survive with no partners.

By the way, I wanted to tell you this…

    Reggie Fils-Aime confirms…

      My body is ready.

  • boundries_san

Lol. This game looks really fun there.^^

Cant wait for this game when they are coming lol.

  • Are there any party members in this one? I was hoping for a shy guy this time.

  • Christopher Nunes

Game looks great! But… did they get rid of the Partner System? Mario is simply going solo this time around? And the Crown character looks like the only Partner, sort of, that follows Mario and helps put items down on the map.

Hmm… need more info. I wonder what happen to the Chomp-Chomp partner from the first trailer?

  • Kavyn

I’ve been waiting so long for a Paper Mario sequel, but honestly what they’ve shown has been totally disappointing. The game play looks decent (so glad they’re going back to the original battle system), but honestly where’s the story?

“Basically everyone’s stickers and you use stickers to beat stickers and you make stickers to blow away different stickers, stickers stickers stickers…”

There’s no plot. They focused so much on the sticker concept but they haven’t told us anything about what’s going on in this world, what the problem is and why Mario’s going out on his adventure. Also what was up with that “Goal” thing, is this supposed to be like the classic mario games with the different worlds? If so then hell-to-the-no :/

And the other thing that’s really bothering me is that they haven’t shown us the partners (they could have at least shown us the first one…). I’m starting to get afraid that partners are going to also be replaced with stickers that you find, which would be SO disappointing. All the different, unique partners that you meet were simply one of the best parts of classic Paper Mario, and it’s the biggest reason why I really disliked Super Mario’s pixls concept. They made it clear that manipulating stickers was the main method of finding secrets, so I guess that implies that we won’t have any situations like TTYD where we need Madame Flurrie to blow a wall away.

Honestly I’m so sad with what they’ve shown us. Either they’re hiding a lot from us about this game, or this will turn out even worse than Super Paper Mario.

    • James Beatty

…they aren’t going to reveal the plot in a trailer.

      • Kavyn

They had an entire presentation to talk about the plot.

    • Ben Sylvia

Dude, Paper Mario 1 and 2 had “worlds” like in normal Mario games, and in the first Paper Mario, each chapter was inspired at least partially from the level types from main Mario games.

Prologue & Chapter 1: Grass level theme/Boss Fortress
      Chapter 2: Desert theme
      Chapter 3: Ghost House
Chapter 4: Original from as much as I know.
Chapter 5: I think inspired by the Yoshi games. and Volcano theme.
      Chapter 6: Clouds theme
      Chapter 7: Ice theme
      Chapter 8: Boss Castle

And parts of some of the chapters in thousand year door have inspiration from main Mario game levels.

Creepy Steeple is partially themed on Ghost Houses.
Can’t really think of anything else since it’s been so long since I played, but you get the idea of what I’m saying.

      •  I think Kavyn is referring to the lack of very good exploration in SPM, and the overall structure of the levels into the traditional worlds. Older Paper Mario games had a lot of little secrets, and you would often go back to the areas as if they were actually located on a larger world structure themselves.

The theme had nothing to do with the execution in that regard.

        • Kavyn

Yes. I’m referring to having a traditional world system like 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, etc. I’ve never seen a Paper Mario game that had to tell you when you were done exploring an area.

    • Ben Sylvia

      You want plot?
This is from the Super Mario Wiki.

      “From the game mini-site:

On the day of the annual Sticker Fest, Bowser decides to pull a prank and scatters six Royal Stickers
across the land. To retrieve these mysterious, magical stickers, which
are now stuck onto Bowser and his underlings, Mario sets off on an
adventure with Kersti, a sticker fairy, visiting prairies, deserts,
forests, snowy mountains and volcanoes around the world.””

      • Kavyn

Makes it sound more like Mario wants to go around collecting special stickers to beat Bowser’s collection. I definitely need more info than that, there has to be something that goes wrong…

    • “Either they’re hiding a
lot from us about this game, or this will turn out even worse than Super
      Paper Mario.”
Yes because Super Paper Mario was bad because it didn’t do the classic gameplay of the old Paper Mario games.  It was still fun and its Plot…MY GOD, Nintendo can come up with some amazing stuff.  This game still looks good, it probably won’t have a great story like TTYD or SPM but meh.  Being a bit picky yo

    • Jirin

Super Paper Mario is the only PM game I like.  Can’t get into the turn based w timing style combat.

I love the charm of the other PM games I’ve played and the whole concept is awesome, I just can’t get into the combat.

  • Zonic505

I have waited so long for new info about this game since it was talked about last year. Cannot wait to get this.

  • This looks like the most light hearted of all the paper mario games dood..

    • Krisi92

…why would it look like that? You know, the other ones weren’t too gloomy either. Except for the end, which they won’t be showing in a trailer obviously…

      • Idk! I just get that kinda feeling from it; even when I saw trailers for the other ones they didn’t jump out to me as much dood

  • All that wait for a new trailer was completely worth it. The game looks like the Paper Mario I love, and the graphics! They look so nice, just like TTYD!

Seriously, this game and the confirmation of FE: Awakening for NA have just made me 100% sure that I will have a 3DS by the end of the year.

  • Platform Mario and this are the only Mario I like. Looking forward to it.

  • XiaomuArisu

Dont know what to think about this game.I liked the other PM games but this?
No partners and no audience, the third gave us playable Bowser. But only mario?
Lets see if this work but this game doesnt beat Fire Emblem for me.
BTW Am I the only one who thinks that Bowser deserved his own game?

  • Truner Razer

My freaking god, where’s the anti aliasing?
Even the GC one had it and the 3DS is supposed to be stronger than that, no?
Otherwise looks nice, but I’m more into Mario and Luigi.

  • Strain42

I’m a little bummed that there doesn’t seem to be Partners in this game since imo they were one of the best parts of the first two games, but it still looks fun and solid and I’ll definitely be picking it up.

  • Ahah, this game looks so much fun! Can’t wait to play it!

  • Levin_Scorpius

While this isn’t the Paper Mario 1/Thousand Year Door like game I was hoping for, it still seems to be an immensely interesting game that still manages to use to the Paper part of the series to an interesting effect and I will most definitely buy it as soon as I can.

Though of course the trailer didn’t give me a glimpse at my favorite part of these games, the story and the dialogue, but I’m pretty sure that those will be as great and hilarious as ever.

  • To think, I had almost forgotten how much I love Paper Mario’s art style.

This looks incredibly fun. Can’t wait.

  • Göran Isacson

I have heard that Mario teams up with Luigi and Wario elsewhere on this site, but I don’t know if that’s official information or just a wild rumor. Anyone out there who can find this little tidbit of info for me? Because I do so love these games partner-characters, they are like half the fun and if WARIO is in it? That would just make it all the sweeter.

I’m just hoping that the Cooking System returns XD I like experimenting things with Cake Mix! ヘ(^_^ヘ)(ノ^_^)ノ
