Okami HD Will Paint A Path To North America This Fall

By Ishaan . June 19, 2012 . 6:11pm

Well, that was quick. Earlier in the evening, Japan’s Famitsu magazine revealed an HD version of Okami for the PlayStation 3. Now, we have confirmation from Capcom USA that the game will be released in North America.

Okami HD will be released as a download game over the PlayStation Network for $20. The game will be compatible with the PlayStation Move controller and will have trophy support as well.

Okami HD is scheduled for release sometime this fall. The game was originally released on the PlayStation 2, followed by a Wii port. A sequel titled Okamiden was released for the Nintendo DS in 2010.

    That was fast.
    And very awesome.

  • Hells yeah on the $20 pricetag! I was expecting at least $30. Going to be a long wait, but it’s going to be so very worth it! :D

    • Solomon_Kano

$30? That would’ve been crazy. Capcom always does 20, going by the HD RE games prior.

  • Luis Camargo

I have tears of joy reading this. Okami is one of my favorite games and being able to experience it again in HD will one make it even better,
Will buy it day one. And I sure do hope this pays off for Capcom so they can continue to invest in more Okami games.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Figured it’d be digital only. Cant wait for reviews so I can decide to buy or not, never played it before.

    • Asura

Buy it. Even if you don’t love it, you’ll still appreciate it enough to not regret using $20.

    • British_Otaku

No review necessary unless they screwed up massively in porting a classic.

  • RoboConker

    I hope there’s a WiiU port.

    • Joom

Uh-oh. You know what those kind of comments lead to on this site don’t you?

    • Solomon_Kano

I can’t see them taking the time for that when the Okami Wii port is already out there. Unlike the PS3, the Wii U is backwards compatible so they probably won’t.

      • British_Otaku

The PS3 is… well was backwards compatible. And many rereleases branded as HD or not have been on systems which could still play the original or an alternative version.

The purpose of rereleases is to profit, as second hand copies of Okami going around doesn’t profit them (unless they are mostly interested in MvC3 because of it, like myself). If they feel that for some reason, not enough people played it on the last system or that there are enough people interested to get some sales. We will have a rerelease.

I don’t expect a Wii U version too much, but it could be come around just like RE4 did to the Wii.

        • Solomon_Kano

I suppose. It just seems unlikely to me.

  • SirRichard

This came out of nowhere, didn’t it? Here’s hoping they do better than they did with RE4 HD, especially in the sound department. It can’t be too hard to port over an old game, lads.

They must see some viability in the series to give it another port, I suppose.

    • British_Otaku

I don’t know about that. We have seen developers mess up quite a few ports from big companies including classic games like Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Silent Hill 2 + 3 and to some… Okami on the Wii (though it is mostly dodging which isn’t necessary and will be fine here, the visual style and the credits being gone).

  • Vampiric

i wonder if this will lead to a retail sequel

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      HD Collections almost always do.

      • Solomon_Kano

That’s supposing this does well. So let’s hope it does.

  • Cephrien

I thought Resident Evil 4 HD looked pretty good personally.
Devil May Cry HD probably had a bigger budget behind it, but if THAT’s any indication then Okami HD is probably going to look REALLY good.

  • That was really quick! xD I was kind of hoping that one day Okami would be in the PS2 Classics on PS3, and now my prayers/hopes have been answered. This is going be $20 well spent.

  • Solomon_Kano

This has to be the quickest any release has ever been confirmed lol. Should be good. It’s art style guarantees that it’ll look better than RE4 even with minimal work.

  • Download only though. I’m so upset. Okami deserves more.

  • Herok♞

Never did finish on wii after getting really far, so I may have to buy again for trophies.

  • British_Otaku

Download only? I know that it is probably unlikely to sell on shelves especially if it slips into late this year or Q1 2013 (where every game is going apparently)… Still it couldn’t do that bad could it?

I’ll hold on for a European announcement and whether we find out if Okami’s Supreme Edition is on a disc in Japan. Yes, I care more about holding my product than understanding it.

    • Barrit

According to another site, it is download only in the US and Europe :( No Europe to the rescue this time, unfortunately.

      • British_Otaku

That’s a shame. Looking over the sources, all of them seem to be digital only releases as the first print bonus for the Japanese copy is a digital version of a print book they released years ago. A digital only first print book bonus is odd for a physical game.

        Thanks for the report, Barrit.

  • KuroiKen

Okami on Wii was great, but I’m sceptical about it being any good with the Move controller, since it’s really uncomfortable to use it.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

You seem really determined to create negatives about this. I hope I’m wrong when I start to wonder if there isn’t some system bias going on.

  • This is probably the best news I’ve heard in gaming all year. Second only to possibly Fire Emblem: Awakening’s localization announcement.

  • I never did know what the hype is all about… So this is a chance to experience it and it’s $20 too….

    • z_merquise

You should get it! It is one of the most unique games and it’s also fun to play.

  • Remote play please!!

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

A great action adventure game that everyone should try. Too bad it’s download only, but will still get this anyway.

Hopefully the Move controller will help me get past that damn rock wall bastard… >.>

  • Raiyu

Aww, only download? Really want a physical release but oh well, I’m still going to buy it.

I never played Okami before but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.

    • British_Otaku

Well, there is still the Wii version of the game which had copies going for around $20 years ago and I see copies for cheaper now.

I would recommend the Wii version or PS2 version if you need to have a physical copy. Okamiden on the DS is pretty good too, though it isn’t up to the same level.

      • Raiyu

        I don’t own a Wii.

I’d rather have a physical copy but if I can’t, I’ll deal with it. It’s better than not getting it at all. I may get Okamiden sometime after I get a new 3DS though. But I heard its not a particularly good sequel though.

        • British_Otaku

I see. I hope you enjoy Okami and Okamiden when you get a chance to play them.

I’m not sure if I can put aside my physical only policy myself though…

  • Niermyico

Supports Trophies? I’m game. I already played the life out of this game on the PS2 (still have the game with me). So with 1080p support and trophies, I don’t mind playing the game again.

Not getting a Move for this game though.

  • Alexandra Cordes

I’ve replayed this game over and over… but I’m still going to buy this. HELL YEAH, AMATERASU.

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

i shed so many manly tears

  • farios

I think i just regained my faith in Capcom, oh yes!

    • Solomon_Kano

Over a port? I understand the excitement, but…

      • farios

        Well almost regained i guess

        • Niermyico

Not really. They’re just doing what they do best… Moooo.

  • ParaChomp

As for those of you who preferred or rather have controls similar to the Wii version’s, you’re in luck.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

For all who never played this game, it is a good chance to taste this masterpiece here.^^

  • joe ling

I hope it has a platinum trophy. Thats what I hate about RE4 HD, no platinum.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

According to the trailer, 51 trophies with a platinum!

  • mockturtle

The part of me that is boycotting Capcom is very dismayed by this news. I do not want to give them money until they give me Gyakuten Kenji 2, not even for Okami. I’ll just stick with the Wii version.

    • Solomon_Kano

So… you never want to give them money then. It’s a bit late for DS games now.

      • British_Otaku

It is not too late for a DS game where the DS is still receiving movie games (companies see it as a major part of the market) and Nintendo is still pushing out Pokemon games exclusively for the DS (both mainstream AND spinoffs).

Besides that, he could backpedal for Gyakuten Kenji 2 on the 3DS or something for all you know in the future.

        • Solomon_Kano

To clarify, it’s a bit too late for DS games from Capcom. That was what I meant by that statement. There are several publishers still putting out DS titles, this I know. I was talking solely about Capcom, who’ve given up on the DS for the 3DS already.

And while it’s possible that Capcom could put it on 3DS, I can’t see them doing that. The series had niche appeal in the US and they already made their money off of the Japanese release. I can’t see them porting it, then localizing it, then releasing it in the west all because they decided not to give it to us on DS. They’d probably sooner localize the existing version. Even if they did put it on 3DS though, they probably still wouldn’t localize that version. The DS is still the prime choice in the west, so that wouldn’t do them any favors.

  • xXDGFXx

    download… only… no beautiful boxart… T_T
Still happy this is happening but… the boxart T_T

  • scratchbach

Okay, hold up- HD remasters of BOTH of my favorite games of all time- Persona 4 and Okami- in one year?
My body has never been more ready.
Shut up and take all of my money.
Pretty much the best year of gaming ever, on a personal level at least.

    • Solomon_Kano

With ZOE HD on the way, I’m inclined to agree. Well, if not the best year, this is damn sure the best year of this generation.

      • KuroiKen

Don’t forget Sengoku Basara HD Collection!

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah, you’re right! I need to make sure I import that.

  • Zonic505

I have waited so long for a HD version of this. Adding the fact it’s only $20, includes Move support (which I don’t care for, but still a nice feature since the game was on Wii), & trophies sweeten the deal. Day 1 download.

  • ffboi7

Excited for this!! Never got to play this beautiful game! Can’t wait

  • Skeima

i’ve always want to play okami,,,but something tell me it might come in HD later
i’m glad it did…plus the trophy support!

  • For the first time ever, I’ll have to be there ready day 1 for a download game. The game was absolutely gorgeous in SD that I cannot begin to fathom what the HD version will do to me, but I must acquire a copy of this. If everything turns out well, this could quite possibly be my favorite HD release ever.

  • Roberto Armando Iraheta

Nice. It’s good to see that people will have a chance to play one of the most beautiful games ever made.

  • TheInternetNomad

awesome, wish they had a vita version also

  • I might be interested in playing this as I never got around to either of the previous versions, but 20 bucks? For a six-year-old game? I mean I get that it’s upscaled and all, but damn, that’s still a bit steep for a download.

Honestly, why not just release a Clover HD Collection? Viewtiful Joe 1 and/or 2, Okami and God Hand. Sell it at retail for about $40-50, and bam. I’m sure people would buy it. Each of those games is a cult classic in its own right.

  • Also: why no Vita?

    • KuroiKen

      Because “veeta has no gaems”

  • theoriginaled

  • I missed gaming related surprises like this! Nowadays everything gets leaked in advance, so this definitely came out of nowhere. Even tho nothing official has been said about an european release, I’m pretty sure Capcom wouldn’t pass up on the chance to bring this game over again to the old continent, so bring it on!

  • KingGunblader

Excellent! I played this on a friend’s PS2 way back in the day, and I never got the chance to nab the Wii version before it disappeared. For $20 bucks, I’m in!
