Unchained Blades Unleashed For PSP On June 26

By Spencer . June 19, 2012 . 10:37am

UB_cutscene01Xseed is bringing Unchained Blades, a dungeon RPG from Toshio Akashi of Lunar fame and the story was written by Grandia veteran Takashi Hino, to North America.

In Unchained Blades you play as Fang, a haughty dragon emperor drawn by Shining series artist pako. The goddess Clunea removes Fang’s powers as punishment for his arrogance and he must team up with other characters like a phoenix maiden and golem to get them back.

Unchained Blades has been redubbed with English voiceovers and PSP owners can purchase the game from the PlayStation Store for $29.99. Xseed will also release the 3DS version of Unchained Blades as a digital download later this year.

Hopefully the 3DS date can be announced so I can have something to keep me occupired until Kingdom Hearts DDD comes out, assuming it makes it out before that game does. This will be the priciest digital game Ive ever purchased from any source, so I have big hopes. English VA’s is an excellent start.

    • Anesia Hunter

there’s a chance the 3ds version might not come out until way after KH3D though.

  • Why only the PSP version?

    • Barrylocke89

I assume the 3DS version isn’t ready yet.

  • Nintendo wants their game to be the first full downloadable game and that will be New Super Mario Bros. 2 which is due to be released in August.

    • Unfortunately, I suspect this is exactly right. Bunch of bastards.

    • kylehyde

I suspect the same, probably 3DS version is going to be released on september.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Just read this on FB. My Vita is ready for the 26th!
I wonder why they didn’t release it on both platforms at the same time, though.

  • Z3

What about the EU psn, when is it going to be released?

  • Merveilles Lespace

So this is gonna work on Vita right? Like it’s not gonna be another Gungnir/(probably) Growlanser “Whenever Sony does it, I guess, I dunno” situation? Because damn if that’s not discouraging.

    • cj_iwakura

I’d honestly advise you don’t get your hopes up. Niche PSP RPGs don’t seem to be SCEA’s focus.

      • Solomon_Kano

Corpse Party was a niche title too, but that didn’t take -too- long to be made compatible. Hopefully, this will be the same.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Wait…Gungir doesn’t work on the Vita? Cause I was gonna get this for the Vita…

  • Eddie Dominguez

30 bucks for a digital game and a wizardry clone at that? thats quite steep ihmo.i will get it with a price drop.okthxbai

    • I think I’m more pained by the grumbling about it being “just a Wizardry
clone,” or the questioning of its quality, than I am by the grumbling
about its price point. I mean, it’s one thing to describe a game as
being fun and addictive, but if you haven’t experienced it for yourself,
it doesn’t mean a whole lot — especially not when it comes from a
company spokesperson, what with bias and all.

All I can do is assure you that it really is a very high-quality game.
It’s possibly the best first-person dungeon crawler I’ve ever had the
pleasure of playing. I greatly prefer it to Wizardry, personally, and
would even rank it side by side with my precious Dinosaur: Resurrection
(a compliment I do not make lightly!). From a gameplay standpoint, it’s a
brilliant fusion of so many different gameplay styles — it’s like they
took the basic framework of Wizardry, mixed it with Shin Megami Tensei
demon negotiation, added an interesting take on the FFX sphere grid,
threw in a dash of the Shadow Hearts judgment ring and a pinch of rhythm
game and topped it all off with a great ambient soundtrack,
well-designed dungeons, varied and unique character designs and a story
that’s one part Wizard of Oz and two parts Bastard!!.

And the best part is, all those disparate elements actually work REALLY
WELL together — it doesn’t feel slapdash, it feels well-planned and
      well thought-out.

I think anyone who enjoys dungeon-crawlers will be absolutely HOOKED on
this game. And anyone who enjoys JRPGs… well, you’ll like it too! It’s
got a little something for everyone.

      • Will Unchained Blades be compatible with the ps vita?

        • It’s up to Sony when a PSP title is made compatible with
Vita. We don’t have anything to do with that, I’m afraid.

          • Hopefully they see you as a valuable 3rd party and work on that right away. Sony already made bc awkward with UMD only titles, it would be even more awkward to have digital titles left on the PSP.

      • NeoAthanasius

The price is nice. Especially when you factor what it would cost to buy the game in Japan. It looks really fun as well. The art is very interesting.

  • Juan Manuel M. Su├írez

I’m interested in the game and in supporting XSeed, but 29.99 USD for a digital release of a PSP game doesn’t entirely sell me on it~.

    • JazzyMan123

How about if I told you there was a sequel? Buy this and we might have a chance to get the sequel which is called Unchained Blades EXIV. :)

  • 26 Hmm. $30… eh… Well at least they gave me heads up before others. :P I knew this coming cause I am special.

  • Sevyne

$30 is way overpriced for a game of this kind. I’d love to get it but not at that price. No thanks.

Edit: Love how everyone not happy about the price is getting down-voted even if they aren’t being jerks about expressing it. Someone here is a mindless XSEED fanboy.

    • cj_iwakura

That’s the MSRP of every Etrian Odyssey game, for what it’s worth.

    • NeoAthanasius

But now you are being pretty harsh about it. Complaining about the price seems unfair in this situation. Why shouldn’t this game cost the same as other RPG’s? If you really would ‘love’ to get the game, then why is $29.99 stopping you?

      • JazzyMan123

It’s because they want the box.

For me though, I’m finding physical PSP boxes rather unappealing to me these days and I agree with many others the UMD is a rather poor format.

  • Suicunesol

$30 is not a price to take lightly if you’re not into dungeon crawlers (and most people aren’t >_<). But remember that the entire game has been redubbed in English, so maybe it's justified.

At least it's not a full price 3DS game.

    • Sevyne

Funny thing is that most people would have rather not had it dubbed, so they’re paying more than they should for things they never asked for.

btw I love dungeon crawlers, but $30 for a game that looks like it could have been a smartphone game for under $10 is a big no no.

      • Suicunesol

I don’t know about that. When you say “most people”, would you be talking about the majority of the vocal fans (of which there are probably few) or the majority of the actual buyers? Since this is an eShop game meant for English speakers in general and not exclusively for fans, it would be foolish to leave the game with Japanese voices. They might as well not localize it at all.

And I don’t know if it’s fair to call it a smartphone game when you haven’t played it. :O

  • cj_iwakura

PSP going out with a bang this summer. (Well, excluding the possibility of EP getting a fall release.)

I’d love a physical release(and the cover), but I’ll live.

    • It won’t. There a ton more PSP game frm JP….. Or ppl r gonna buy it on Vita.

  • That’s a tempting price. (New games go for 40.00 IIRC)

Pity I’m going for the 3DS version.

  • Darrel Daley

The price would probably be $20 if it wasn’t dubbed like Corpse Party. They really should have released a limited print and sold them at amazon or something. If your charging $30, people will want a physical copy.

    • Hraesvelgr

People still wanted physical copies of Corpse Party and Wizardry, so I don’t think it makes any difference. Some people are going to complain about it no matter what they do.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Except limited prints would just hurt Xseed in the long run.

  • damn xseed. wil NOT be getting this i want it on dics 30 dollars for air? omg!

    • Air version? What sorcery are you pulling these days XSEED?

      • malek86

I just imagined that if someone used the PSV’s 3G module to sell games OTA, that would be totally awesome.

      • Exkaiser

Air sorcery, clearly. The Cloud is an air-elemental spell available to fifth-level wizards.

  • It’s too bad this wasn’t physically released. This is a game that looks really interesting to me, but I will never get to play it due to it’s digtal release combined with high price for digital. Thanks for the effort Xseed, but I can’t support you in this.

  • Yay, another game for the Vita! =P

  • Darkrise

What a bad time to be broke…

  • Brandonmkii

I can never get enough dungeon crawlers. My only conundrum is what system to get it on.

  • Solomon_Kano

I’ll be able to play it on my Vita? Will get.

    • @AzureNova:disqus @Solomon_Kano:disqus Just curious, you can buy/DL PSP game into PSV through on9?

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea. You can do it either through your PS3 or through your Vita directly. The game has to be Vita compatible though. Any games that show up on PSN on your Vita are compatible and there’s a section on the PS3 PSN that says Vita/PSP games to let you know.

      • JazzyMan123

If it shows up on the PStore on your Vita, then yes, you can play PSP games on your Vita.

      • I believe you should be able to. Any newer PSP game that is coming to the PSN I think, and hopefully the did, they would consider that people would want to play them on the VIta as well. Either way it should tell you in the PSN store if its able to be played on the PSP as well as the VIta.

    • It should tell you in the store if you can play it on the Vita or not.

      • Solomon_Kano

I know. I explained as much to Dylan down bottom. It was actually a rhetorical question, sorry lol.

  • Carocaro4

I love my PSP but once I talk about it to people other than on the interwebs they’re all like ” PSP?” that bumbs me. I really love my PSP and love what Xseed has brought to the system. Day one for me. Now hurry along and announce the release date for Trails in the Sky Second chapter!! ( Oh no)

    • Don’t listen to them. They are idiots.

  • JazzyMan123

Will still be getting this regardless of the pricing XSEED. Though I suppose it’s mostly because I hope to see the sequel Unchained Blades EXIV get localized too. :)

Though right now all I need is word that it is Vita compatible and you got a sale.

  • TheCynicalReaper

I don’t understand this “high price” complaint I’m reading in several replies. Check this out (all download prices):
    Gungnir (Atlus): 29.99
    Fate/EXTRA (Aksys): 24.99
    Unchained Blades (XSEED): 29.99
This is all provable on the PSN. I literally just looked up these numbers.
I guess because Corpse Party got a $20 price tag people expected this game to be different. It’s not a high price, according to the current price tags of newly released full PSP games. I hope that helps people who were initially put off by the price.

    • JazzyMan123

I think it’s mostly due to the fact that people expect DD games to be cheaper than a full retail release.

The mindset of most people regarding DD is basically this: “Games which are DD MUST be at super low prices such as $15 regardless of whether the company loses money or not!”

    • Solomon_Kano

It won’t. Their complaints aren’t even because this is actually a high price, but because it’s a high price for “just a digital game”. If it’s not physical then it should be dirt cheap, apparently. As if being digital changes the value of the content. Pay them no mind, your logic will be ignored.

      • Testsubject909

It does alter the cost of production though, so you can’t completely blame them.

I understand your point, but I also understand their point… Hmm… I’ve no actual opinion on this, so I should probably just stay out of this mess.

        • Solomon_Kano

That’s true, and I understand that logic. That makes perfect sense. But they act as if not being a physical product means it should automatically be in the sub-$20 range. They aren’t arguing that it shouldn’t be the same price as a physical game, they’re just arguing that it shouldn’t cost that much period. And that I can’t agree with.

    • revenent hell

Im one of the ones that think if its a digital only game, to save on the cost of production of physical copies as so often is the reason for this type of release,it should be cheaper than what a physical release would be because thats the excuse given why should the company save money and not the consumer? Fair is fair after all and yes companies are out to make money but if your going to claim “Its cheaper for us on production and better for you because the digital game will be cheaper than the disc/umd ect ect” at least make it so or at least give an option of a physical copy as well if its only going to be slightly cheaper if at all.
Personally id be willing to spend the 60$ for a UMD because I prefer that media over digital.
Orriginally I didnt think the 30$ price was bad but then I began reading some of these comments and it struck me odd how Growlanser wayfarer of time gets a physicall copy at 30$ and yet this game at aproximately the same price is not and yet its still not cheaper? hmmm
Though my lengthy lil tirade aside im just realy happy to get the game no matter how its distributed and 30$ realy isnt a bad price hell I paid more for agarest war since it didnt have a physical copy for the ps3 and when it comes down to it a good game is a good game and I feel so lucky to even be getting it when chances where so low of it being localised to begin with and if people realy want to play the game they should buy it and support xseed. Just because you dont want to support digital media is not a valid excuse to not purchase this game because at the end of the day the stats for poor sales wont be because it was digital only im sure it’ll be viewed more along the lines of “Lack of interest” wich is worse and means a less likelyhood of these games coming over so your stand against digital games is renderd moot when the games wont be coming over.
Id rather support the game genre than see it fade away because of such a silly reason as I dont like the media its released as/on, its the era we are in and hopefully in future when these games arent so “nichey” mabey we will get more physical copy options but that wont happen if they dont sell to begin with.
wow I just did a loverly job of contradicting myself all over the place.

  • I can’t believe I actually forgot about this game until I saw this article.

  • $29.99, eh???

Well, at least it’s better than paying $60 retail prices what most other games do… Plus it’s redubbed with English voices so I can’t complain…

    I will get this when I can…

  • Wackoramaco87

Whoo~! I’m glad to see it coming so soon. Though, I’m not sure which version to get- is one better than the other? Or are they both pretty much the same? If I remember correctly, one of the differences was the placements of the maps?

  • best news ive heard in a long time .. needed this!!!

  • nekoCiel

    im flailing with joy ~(>w<)~

  • Go2hell66

wow releasing games on 3DS must be real hassle
