Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Trailer Shows Brand New Footage

By Ishaan . June 21, 2012 . 10:36pm

At today’s Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo showed off a new trailer for Square Enix’s Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. The trailer showed a mix of both cutscenes and in-game footage, and you can watch it below, courtesy of YouTube user, Nintendaan:

Bravely Default is described by producer, Tomoya Asano, as a classic-style RPG. The game has a job system like Final Fantasy V and The 4 Heroes of Light. Jobs are tied to crystals and one of the crystals in the game unlocks the Monk, Black Mage and White Mage jobs. The Knight job is confirmed to be in the game, too, and in a surprise twist, enemies in Bravely Default have jobs as well.

As you play through Bravely Default, you collect more jobs along the way. The game’s main story follows four characters and sub-scenarios, which is where you can find additional jobs. Developer, Silicon Studio, also included multiple endings.

The game will be released sometime this year, but Square haven’t announced a release date yet. A third demo for the game is headed to the Japanese Nintendo eShop soon.

Can’t wait for that battle demo. I hope its nice and long too. The other demos have been so short.

  • Herok♞

That was epic, I can’t wait until it hopefully is localized in 2013.

  • Solomon_Kano

Ah, and just like that, I’m reminded of what was missing from that Nintendo Direct.

    Profound sadness.

Oh well, game still looks damn good. Hopefully, we hear word of it coming by year’s end. Surely, Nintendo got plenty more Directs planned between now and then. Besides, SE doesn’t have anything else on their 3DS slate for NA after KH and Theatrhythm.

  • Shadowman

This game is looks crazy good they need to localize this game before I get my new 3DS XL.

    • Masengan

I was actually thinking how good it would look on bigger screens.

      • Shadowman

It’s gonna look way good on that plasma screen. get it.

  • kylehyde

I’m really in love with this title, I hope that SE bring it here.

  • Chiupon

this looks so great, i can’t even

i was getting final fantasy nostalgia. :C

  • aww hell the guys from Alundra really know their stuff. Teaming up with the art designer of previous Final Fantasy titles ought to get them even more sales.

Makes me regret that I won’t be able to play it. I loved Alundra and past Final Fantasy titles. A combination of both seems like sweet Lemon-Ice Tea and hot spicy Ramen to me! :3

Als it gives me a slight Golden Sun vibe as well. Hopefully they will localize it as fast as possible so that everyone who has the equipment is able to play it. ^^

  • Carocaro4

I don’t know. The game seems to have a lot of same but new stuff ( which I actually like) but it hasn’t “wowed” me yet.not yet. Just a sec- job classes? ALRIGHT.

  • YEAH!

    Job System FTW!

  • was that ghost train?

  • Yu_TheKing

This looks RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING. Confirmation of U.S. Release date nao???

    • Anime10121

If only they’d announce localizations for most of them considering a couple  of the good games are only confirmed for Japan, (Bravely Default and Project X Zone).

      • Altritter

I’d be extremely surprised if we don’t get Bravely Default, but Project X Zone is an absolute licensing nightmare. I’d say its chances are extremely low.

        • Anime10121

True, true, but I always like to hope (even if I know it wont come true).

        • LynxAmali

Well, you know, if they actually promoted it, it could possibly make a decent amount of sales.

Who am I to say though? I don’t know business after all.

        • Tom_Phoenix

Actually, compared to the other projects that B.B. Studio handles, Projext X Zone is extremely straightforward licensing-wise. There isn’t a whole lot of third-party distributors involved as is often the case with anime works; all the IPs belong to three corporations, who all have overseas divisions. If they were serious about releasing the game outside of Japan, I don’t think licensing would pose much of a problem.

Having said that, there is a potential legal issue in the inclusion of Dynamite Cop. Not necessarilly beacuse of the license itself, but beacuse of Bruno Delinger’s extreme likeness to Bruce Willis.

But more important than the legal concerns are the business concerns; namely, whether or not there is a big enough audience outside of Japan to justify the localisation of this game. Turn-based tactics games are quite niche,  so localising one is always somewhat of a risk. It doesn’t help that, while Capcom’s roster is filled with characters that are well-known among Western gamers, most of the characters from Namdai and Sega come from games that are virtually unknown outside of Japan.

  • I just saw Akihiko Yoshida’s name in the bottom of the text as “MAIN CHARACTER DESIGN.” I guess Square finally realized that Tetsuya Nomura’s style doesn’t solely define Final Fantasy.

    • Anime10121

Yeah but this game isn’t Final Fantasy.  I love both Nomura’s and Yoshida’s art, but what I’d really love is for IX’s character designers to make a comeback.

      • Bravely Default is technically a successor to Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light.

It’s kinda like how Mana series started with Final Fantasy Adventure (which was renamed “Sword of Mana” when remade for the GBA). Vagrant Story also takes place in the same world as Final Fantasy XII and Tactis.

        • Anime10121

All true, but honestly this game is far more evolved than 4 heroes was, and the only thing IMO that is similar is graphical style and its reliance on jobs.  4 heroes was extremely simple and harked back towards FF3 days, when games didnt have much of a story.  This game seems more FF4/6 like with the added bonus of FF5’s jobs.

  • Oh, man! This game is looking really good. As other have said, a confirmation of localization is needed; that would just make me so happy.

This is why I can’t leave JRPGs alone. :D

  • It’s games like this that reassure my love for gaming in general. Knowing that amidst the sea of sequels and outsourced franchises, fresh IPs like this are released. I can’t wait to play this!

    • komiko12

This game isn’t exactly fresh but yeah I am excited for this game!

      •  It’s fresh because it manages to meld in both old and new concepts into something that’s new. Not to mention it’s not attached to any other IPs or brand names (one could argue it draws heavily from Final Fantasy, but so does Kingdom Hearts and yet it is something entirely independent after all :D)

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Fresh Ips is always bringing hope for game world here.^^

  • Göran Isacson

That (what I’m presuming to be) Doomtrain summon, oooh yeesss. Not much else to comment on that really caught my eye here, save for mister Smarmy Bookclapper at the end. Wonder what role he will play…

    • puchinri

Hah! What a great way to describe him. I think you nailed that on the head.

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, yeah I think it’s a fair way to describe him. Like we haven’t really seen much of him, but when I see a character reading a book in a slouched position and act like the book he’s reading is really the script and he’s acting all “pff yeah everyone’s doing things just the way I planned”, Smarmy Bookclapper is probably an accurate summation of what he is.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

………. ^^ Jrpg goodness to the finest there.^^

  • Placido Michael Cortorreal Flo

the more i read and see about this game, the more i want it localized to the entire world!

    >.< it should be againt the law to deprive people from cool games like this, and i do have hope it will localized, i mean…Four Heroes of Light got it and i felt they didn't show it lots to US, LA (Latin American) EU, AU people as much as this game.

  • KingGunblader

I think the best thing we can do to get this game localized is to buy Theatrhythm and/or Kingdom Hearts, no?

  • Okay Square, where’s the localization announcement? I’m more excited to play this (especially after seeing this trailer) than I ever was for Type-0 so please give a localization announcement!

As stated this game looks great and the trailer got me far more excited for it than any other piece of information so far (and that’s saying something with how excited I already am for this game). I cannot wait to be able to play it myself as I love classic turn-based RPGs.

  • XypherCode

    I want it now! :) :P
    You gotta love JRPGs!
And the gameplay kinda reminds me of Golden Sun. Maybe this is SE’s take on it xD

    • Tom_Phoenix

If anything, this is SE’s new take on Final Fantasy V.

  • Wow, just wow did this look amazing! I wanted it before, but especially after seeing this! I really hope SE decides to localize it soon =^_^=

    • Anesia Hunter

they most likely will after they get their current games out the way.

  • revenent hell

I am so ready to buy this now so uhm could we get an announcment for its release in NA por favor?

Edit: I also realy am liking the VA’s here. I think id like this in dual audio if possible as well.

  • esteban cartagena

It looks like an awesome game, all it needs is a Vita port :)

  • Darrel Daley

Hey look, it’s Final Fantasy! I haven’t seen one of those games since the 90s. Good thing it’s back!

    • Alexander Aubert

      LOL you’re right

  • puchinri

The game is even more beautiful each time I see it~.

I wonder if the character with the book is another party member? I notice only our party members so far were shown (although very briefly with Edea, sadly) so I’m curious.

Loving that the class/job system is like FFV’s. I hope we get all the jobs that it has and more (ahem, Tactics!).

I’m really looking forward to the game, and I hope it gets localized. I will day one pre-order. ♥u♥

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

better then FF 10 to 13

    • Bigabu Beaze

       My Tro~ll senses a~re tingling!!!

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

I think there meds for that

  • Alexander Aubert

  • Setsuryuu

It all still looks quite mysterious, but I like these designs a lot. That simplicity of good old times is quite refreshing.

  • keithmaxx

Notwithstanding the weird title (which accompanies most Jgames titles) this game looks and feels awesome with each trailer. I’m looking forward to a localization, but I also think this is worth buying a second 3DS for!

  • Levin_Scorpius

Square Enix, the key word here is localization. You know what that means, right? Just release it overseas (with an English being preferable, but if not I can deal), then I’ll throw however much money you want at you, okay?

Also, why are like all of the CG scenes shown thus far of Agnes in her worst outfit? I mean, you gave Tiz 2 brief seconds of screen time and completely shafted Edea of any CG scenes. You have more than one main character you know! One character does not an RPG make.

  • Astrid Huang

I’ll get 3ds if this gets a localization
