Super Smash Bros. 3DS And Wii U Being Developed By Tales, Soulcalibur, Tekken Staff

By Ishaan . June 21, 2012 . 9:59pm

Nintendo have published a message from the designers of the new Super Smash Bros. games for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. As previously reported, the game is being developed by Namco Bandai in collaboration with Smash Bros. co-creator, Masahiro Sakurai.

Sakurai will be directing the game as always, and overseeing the project. His message follows.

Sakurai’s message:

Hello, I’m Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Super Smash Bros. series.

It’s my personal belief that the only time a creative product really resonates is in that first moment when it’s actually in front of you.

With that said, I’ve realised that if we keep the new Super Smash Bros. title’s development structure secret, it’ll only create more and more speculation, and I won’t be able to develop the game with any freedom. That’s why I’ve decided to announce this news right now, even though it’s still very early on.

I would love to provide more information, but for now, I’m going to stay quiet until I have something solid to show you.

The project has just gotten started. Bear in mind that not only are we developing two titles simultaneously, but we announced the project before we even started actual development, so I’m afraid we will likely have to keep you waiting for quite a while. Please be patient.

Currently, the prototype prepared by NAMCO BANDAI Games and NAMCO BANDAI Studio’s special team looks pretty good, and it’s working great. In order to take advantage of the fact that there will be versions for two different systems, and to maximise and offer fun new gameplay elements, the entire team is going to work hard together. Thank you.

kobayashi

And now, the second message, which is from Masaya Kobayashi of Namco Bandai games, who are developing the new Smash Bros. game.

Kobayashi’s message:

Hello, everyone. I’m Masaya Kobayashi of NAMCO BANDAI Studio. I’m so honored to be able to join the Super Smash Bros. team – that globally popular series of which Japan is particularly proud – and to work alongside Mr. Sakurai.

In order to make Mr. Sakurai proud, we will take on this project with NAMCO BANDAI’s best staff! Yoshito Higuchi, the producer and the director of the “Tales” series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of “Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs.,” the art director/sound director of the “SoulCalibur” series, the main development team staff from the “TEKKEN” series…and that’s just for starters.

All the top creators from NAMCO BANDAI are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project.

We will fully utilise our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organisational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful “Super Smash Bros.” titles ever! Don’t miss them!

  • ZEROthefirst

OK, let’s get this straight. Tales, Gundam Extreme Vs., Soul Calibur, Tekken as well as being directed by Sakurai… I need to change my pants real quick.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I believe changing pants is useless considering……. you will still come the moment you see this news again lol.^^

      • ParaChomp

Resisting urge to make dirty joke!

  • Solomon_Kano

Wait… the Tekken development staff? OH HELL YES!

Now I know I’m gonna love this more than Brawl. If anybody can push the series forward while bringing back what I loved about Melee, it’d be Namco’s Tekken team. Just like that, I have my new most anticipated game for… hell, for any system.

    • Christopher Nunes

One thing I loved about Melee more than Brawl with the movement speed of the characters, they freakin’ zigzag all over the place in Melee yet in Brawl they move too damn slow for my taste which is why I like playing Sonic as he moved fast (and I played on a hacked Wii of a friend of mine in College when we had a Game Club meeting and played Brawl with Melee physics and they characters moved, with custom skin, and Sonic was bloody dangerous with Melee physics in!).

I look forward to this new Smash game! Ah, I remember the original commercial for the first Smash game… sweet memories.

I’ve never really played a Tekken game before, except for an Arcade version (don’t remember which version) and I quite enjoyed it for a bit.

      • Solomon_Kano

I’ve always stuck to arcade versions of Tekken myself. I did play the home version of Tekken Tag though. Such a great game. Yea, I’m really excited for this.

  • RmanX1000

    *Insert freak out here*

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      Fanboy scream!!!!!

      KYAAAAA!!!

  • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

I take back all my skepticism. There sounds EPIC. It’s like they took all the best pieces of Bandai Namco series development staff and mashed them together to work on this.

    So. Excited.

  • XypherCode

“…and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful “Super Smash Bros.” titles ever! Don’t miss them!”

    Ooyeh!!! :D Super Hype! xD

  • aoihana

Man, it’s like they threw together the best of Namco Bandai to work on Super Smash Bros!

    Oh, damn! щ(゜ロ゜щ)

It’ll be so amazing seeing Super Smash Bros unravel, I can’t wait to see how this will turn out! I’m sure it’ll be glorious! (*≧m≦*)

    • Christopher Nunes

Indeed! Though I’m a little unhappy with some of the products Namco Bandai forced out for launch date *cough*SoulCaliburV*cough*… I will admit that make excellent artwork, music, and such and I think this will be a great Smash Bros. experience!

Hopefully most, if not all, of the characters from Brawl return including Sonic! He has to come back! With a little more kill moves, he had like 3 only and there were tricky to play off.

  • Ben Sylvia

Can’t wait for mind blowing, pants wetting epicness sometime between 2015 and 2078.

  • Xapth

I would love some Yuri Lowell in my Smash Brothers.

  • ArcadiaSymphonia

OMFG! Oh Yeah! I love this! Same people who made tekken are working on this!?! Hope that means we will see a pac-man or jin kazama crossover!

  • LightZero

I can see Lloyd or Yuri in this game. It would be quite fitting for Lloyd though.

  • SirRichard

The Tekken guys are in there? Air juggling confirmed for a core part of gameplay!

Seriously though, it’s a pretty damn promising team and it makes sense; Namco Bandai have multiple fighting game series out there on HD platforms, they have the tech and the knowledge to get Smash Bros out there faster for the Wii U. I imagine Sora are going to be handling the 3DS one, what with their experience with Uprising.

    • ForteWily

       Maybe, maybe not…
Also keep in mind, Tekken (namely Prime Edition) has seen the 3DS… it would not take much to have the Tekken team work with that system, they have done it before.

  • Shadowman

This soooo awesome I can finally play one of the game I played when I was child I can’t wait^^ So awesome.

  • Mago Iichi

A tale of subspace and toys eternally retold

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope they add new gameplay mods in this like a tekken fighting mode or rpg mode * talking out of my a$$ now

  • riceisnice

    Oh Sakurai, you handsome devil~

  • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

this is so awesome. beyond awesome, even. they have the freaking dream team working on this game. not to mention, some more potential 3rd party characters…i will almost definitely be getting this for 3ds and Wii U. XD

  • SLick123456789111

As long as they don’t make it with the hardcore (self proclaimed , FGC) in mind , this will be a very successful & fun project for the teams & fans.
Congratulations to Namco Bandai for being sought after by Nintendo & chosen to take part in making the game.
Excited for what they have planned.

    • Ty Arnold

What exactly is wrong with making a game that keeps the “hardcore” in mind? I mean, it’s Smash Bros, they won’t make it overly technical like Street Fighter 3rd Strike or anything, but why not add a few features that would make the competitive players happy? It wouldn’t hurt the casual experience of the game.

      • Arrei

I think he with meant the hardcore in mind, at the expense of the rest of the players.

More features, on the other hand, is always a good thing.

      • Jiikae

I feel like I’m one of the few people who understand this. Rarely does depth affect casual play, especially with a game like Smash, after all, Melee was deep and casuals still had fun with it. Just please both crowds.

And why do I always sense negative energy when people mention hardcore fighting gamers? I see nothing wrong with competitive gaming and people wanting a deep experience in their game as long as they aren’t jerks about it (yes I know a good bit of people in the FGC are jerks about it but that’s not the majority, the jerks just happen to be the loudest).

      • ForteWily

Because at this point, making Smash into something like Street Fighter would be rather wrong to do. The point to the series has always been to approach the fighting game from a different angle than Street Fighter (or any other 2D fighter that takes from SF’s mould). At that point it would be hard to add in something more conventional (like say, a life bar) and call it Smash. The same way that adding sidestep to conventional SF play keeps it from being Street Fighter in a 3D space (and trust me when I say that Capcom has tried).

That said, Melee has has a wide assortment of defensive feature to the combat (parry, safe fall, etc.). It was far from a simple game. But I would say this much… the FGC has had a hard time understanding the series for a long time simply because it is different. If you want to keep it feeling like SSB, that is likely to continue….

  • http://twitter.com/RadYanB Radyan Yudha B.

is this mean a Pokemon vs Digimon match is possible?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

Aw, man.. Now that would a battle awaited by both sides of Japanese monster breeding franchise.

      • Christopher Nunes

I’ve DREAMT that battle of ages in my head years ago and still do! I imagine Charmeleon and Agumon going at it with each other in a teaser trailer, with the original 150 Pokemon VS the Season 1 -3 Digimon (not all of them of course).

        That would be something. ^_^

      • LynxAmali

Needs more Monster Rancher for monster breeding battle royale.

Think about it. Eyeball with Tongue, Fire Dragons and cyborg Dinosaurs.

        Best game ever right there.

    • Christopher Nunes

I would LOVE for them to do that! That’s one crossover game that NEEDS to be done! The epic confrontation of the world’s greatest Monsters duking it out!

Plus maybe Nintendo could try to bring Digimon World Re:Digitize… eh, that’s wishful thinking BUT they did have Digimon games for their DS handhelds… hopefully Digimon Lost Evolution finally gets brought over.

Re:Digitize is a PSP title… so highly unlikely, but I can dream oh I can dream.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

Throw in Heihachi as well into the cast~!

  • Niermyico

Nintendo and NAMCO…. You see these shackles! I’m your slave.

    *gets bent* :D

  • Klaus00

Ok so I just woke up , yawned and pretty sleepy still
opened up my pc did the daily site routine of getting my game news
saw this , fell off my chair , my legs and arms went wild and I was told foam was coming out of my mouth.I saw the light and a glimpse of Sakurai smiling upon me

  • http://twitter.com/Jumendezsama Jumendez

Oh cool, Super Soulcalibur Bros. I mean, Soulcalibur’s a fighting series known for quality and definitely one that SSB wants to follow. I can’t wait for Ivy to knock Mario out with her giant rack.

  • andref

Wonder if both versions will be almost identical or will the 3DS be with handheld aimed characters?

    • Bio_liquid

From what I heard/read waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back was that the 3ds version would be more of a single player experience allowing you to customize your characters and being able to link and send your creations to the Wii U for use on that console.

Idk if that is true though.

      • andref

Hard to say, but my only hope hearing the announcement way back when was that I could get the same experience on the 3DS without having to save up the money for the Wii U

  • Jezzy

Wow, didn’t see this one coming. SSB for EVO2k13!

  • Go2hell66

This is the only game i wanted Wii U, YES!

  • Masengan

This has got me excited about potential cameos.

    • Linhua

… been thinking about how some of them’ll fit in since I heard this news.

  • XiaomuArisu

Maybe my friends will then stop complaining about the “unbalanced”gameplay.

  • Yu_TheKing

Mobile Suit Smash; Tales of the IronCalibur Bros.

  • MrJechgo

That’s good news, especially if it means that we’ll be getting Lloyd Irving as a guest instead of Snake and Sonic. Seriously, these two were lame and poorly balanced: many of Snake’s attacks could hurt him and Sonic’s damage output was too low.

  • SoulEmbrace2010

    Smells like a MUST GET!

  • Linhua

    … damn… = … now they’ve forced me to consider getting a Wii U.

… now then… if I can get a hint of Zelda if U will… i’ll buy the damn thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

I’m going to trust Namco Bandai in making the next Super Smash Bros. game although this means they’ll have a heavy legacy to carry.

That aside, I can imagine some potential cameos of the just some as obvious as Pac-Man, but also at least one character from Tekken like Kazuya Mishima.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Could we see Naruto or other Namco Bandai characters making a guest appearance? If Snake could appear, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.

    • Speedo Redempteur

Well sakurai has to go to the one holding the IP and ask for permission
.. simple as that … If snake & sonic were possible ..( and overall
great commercial sucesses ) you can easily pick other mascot if the one
      you’re talking to isn’t an idiot…

  • Spirit Macardi

Now they need to put Hideo Yoshizawa in charge of story, and Yoshihiko Arai in charge of artwork.

    • Göran Isacson

I’m totally with you there. The classic Ninja Gaiden trilogy were groundbreaking for their day, Muscle March was hilarious and Mr Driller is a classic. Adding that touch to Smash Bros can only lead to great things.

      ;)

      • Spirit Macardi

I was thinking more about their work with a certain floppy-eared feline.

Hideo Yoshizawa is a master storyteller who knows how to bring out emotion. Meanwhile Yoshihiko Arai is a fantastic artist who excels in making unrelentingly cute characters.

        • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, yeah I knew that’s what you were referring to :) Since I follow Namco X Capcom X Sega very closely and seen you bring up Klonoa in every single post I’ve come across so far, I thought I was going to indulge in some sarcastic humor by bringing up everything that I could find that those two had been involved with BESIDES Klonoa.

  • Göran Isacson

If I don’t get a Pacman cameo out of all this, I won’t even know what to feel and think. Also, as someone else said below: Pokemon versus Digimon. MAKE. THIS. HAPPEN.

Beyond that, like… what am I even supposed to say? It’s Smash Bros being developed by the Tekken team. I can do nothing but stretch my arms to the heavens and sing their praises for all this hype that I can’t even hold. It’s just that much hype.

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

As exciting as “Pokémon VS Digimon” would be, I think Digimon is technically owned by Toei (Animation), so the likelihood is… low. Unless Bandai can get their permission; after all, they’re pretty much a part of Toei’s annual businesses at this point, especially with merchandising – who’s to say they can’t convince Toei?

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, yeah I know in my grown-up heart of hearts that Pokemon Vs Digimon is a loooong-shot, but my inner child will kick my shins if I don’t mention it ;)

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

    I’m okay with this.
Give me Klonoa and/or Pac-Man too btw.

    • Spirit Macardi

Just give me Klonoa. Pac-Man’s gotten more than enough crap lately, so he can just stay out of this one.

    • LynxAmali

Call me when they add Lyn from FE. Because Lyn.

Or you know, call me when they add Megaman.EXE or Geo and Omega-Xis.

My hopes will be dashed despite me praying to the very gods.

  • Guest

dial a combos and air juggles? I dunno….I see the Smash bros community probably be ranting for months over this news..

  • SetzerGabbiani

Hmm…. 2014 at the earliest.  I definitely have a feeling Pac-Man will work his way into this game.  Also, seeing how they are developing project X-Zone,there’s a chance that there will be some overlap from that game.

Licensing nightmare, but because this game is guaranteed to sell, Nintendo will pay the money or organize some kind of deal.

  • Placido Michael Cortorreal Flo

Wow, i am really happy and excited about this news ^-^i love Namco RPG´s and Soul Calibur´s series.

Namco is really known for putting some great music into their games, and thats something im looking foward to in this new Smash Brothers, aside from that, now maybe i can see one of my favorite non nintendo character in the game, and it was made by Namco for the Nintendo Gamecube, its Lloyd Irving, he’s actually fit on the  game fighting style.

  • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

I try not to get too excited whenever I see “Bandai Namco”, but upon seeing “Tekken staff”, I gladly make this an exception.

  • KingGunblader

Whew, I was first nervous when I heard about Bamco doing this, but I feel a lot better now, especially considering Sora will still be right there.

Can’t wait to play as Lloyd Irving. XD

  • NorthernPatches

As long as Sakurai is still at the helm, I have great faith in the next game.

Also I love the games Namco does anyway.

  • https://twitter.com/mikedo2007 mikedo2007

Yeah heard about this, I wonder if Nintendo will do a crossover like Capcom did.  That would be interesting.  I would like to see Nintendo and Sony doing a crossover fighting game since Playstation All-star Battle Royale does play a lot like Smash Bros.  If Capcom and SNK can do a crossover fighting game, why not have Sony and Nintendo do the same.  Who wouldn’t want to see Sackboy duking it out against Mario, and who wouldn’t want to see Kratos and Bowser go head to head.

    • Ferofax

      XD nice try, bro.

You’re describing Utopia. It exists only in a parallel universe, unfortunately. Not this one.

      • https://twitter.com/mikedo2007 mikedo2007

Well did anybody predict Capcom would make a crossover fighting game with SNK with Capcom vs SNK, I don’t think so. Capcom vs SNK surprised a lot of people when it was announced back in the late 90′s. So it’s possible Sony and Nintendo could maybe make a crossover fighting game.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

I’m honestly really interested to see how the new Super Smash Brothers turns out =)

Yo dawg , so we heard you liek sex.

  • Ricewarrior

So the main Tekken Development Team is working on Smash Bros Wii U.

That’s kind of a surprise since I was thinking that they would be too busy working on Tekken X Street Fighter.

    Very interesting news this is.

  • keithmaxx

Nice job transcribing their messages… Anyway, here’s to looking forward to a bigger, balanced and exciting crossover franchise lineup!

  • SanoDragoon

If Namco is going to do it, they should include KOS-MOS.

No KOS-MOS, no love from me, Sakurai.

  • Ferofax

Yay for character inclusions from the staff? Be nice to have new rosters in addition to all the previously available characters…

Tekken in SSB… lol, i can see the juggles now.

  • Anthony Black

Oh god. SoulCalibur art directior? I hope that doesn’t mean we’re going to get overly-sexualized and skimpy character designs this time around.

As for the Tekken development team, I doubt that they’re going to cause the game to become more like other fighters. Sakurai is still in charge, so there shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t think he would allow the gameplay to stray from his intentions.

Also, on a different note, I hope that they aren’t going to pull any DLC or Updates crap, free or otherwise. I like a game to stay the way it is when I paid for it, thank you. I learned the hard way *cough TF2 cough* how updates usually do more harm than good. Yeah, I know that this game probably wouldn’t require you to get the updates for local play, but if you wanted to play online it would.

    • ArcadiaSymphonia

If it’s free why should it matter?

      • Anthony Black

Just because an update is free doesn’t mean it’s good. I paid money for the base game, so them making a change to it afterwards isn’t really fair to the person who bought it. Free updates are especially bad in this respect because you’re usually forced to use them.

Here’s a metaphor I saw somewhere a while back that explains it pretty well:
Imagine you bought a hamburger. You ate some of it, and it was good. Then half way through, FREE UPDATE, an employee of the store you bought it from literally takes a crap right on the patty. BUT NO COMPLAINING! IT’S FREE!

You already paid for the hamburger. You aren’t going to get a refund because you already ate half of it. Would you ever buy food from that restaurant again, knowing that they have the right to force another free update on you whenever they’d like?

  • Kuhile Brodeur

They should go up to fifty characters for this game. And can there be alternate costumes of characters that are cameos of other characters. Like Luigi’s Waluigi and Peach’s Daisy costumes. Do that with everyone else. And if a Tales character gets in, which one should, can it be Sheena? With Soul Calibur sexualization?
