Monster Hunter 4 Slated For Spring 2013 Release [Update]

By Ishaan . June 29, 2012 . 10:59pm

Update: Watch a trailer for the game here.

Capcom are holding a “Game Jam” event this weekend in Japan and the stage show going on at the moment is for Monster Hunter 4. At the stage show, Capcom confirmed that the game is slated for a Spring 2013 release in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS.

A new trailer for the game was shown at the stage show as well. We expect Capcom will make it available to the public in the near future. The trailer confirms monsters like Tigrex and Rathalos. You can find a few photographs of the trailer at Famitsu.com. What you see below is the game’s official logo.

Hmmm. That logo looks awfully reminiscent of “something”…

    • MrSirFeatherFang

      Goddess Crest from Zelda?

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

        Yep!

      • DanteJones

        Doh, beat me to it!

    • DanteJones

The symbol behind the letters is very Zelda-y to me. :Ua

    • http://lukalovesgames.blogspot.de/ Alkaid

Could that be. .. a certain action adventure with a “Z” in it’s name if I am not mistaken? xD

Thought something like that when the logo came into view. Might also hint that the new special boss could be something bird-like.
I’m also quite curious what console capcom will chose for this, since the on-stage screenshots aren’t very … revealing in that matter.

Would really like a better targeting system this time, like in God Eater, that one helped to keep the camera a bit more focused. *g*

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Well, Tri G has a more streamlined targeting system, so I’m sure they’ll put it in this game as well! (I hope) I like the idea of being able to map inventory items to the bottom screen as well, so I hope they expand on what you can do with that further in this game. Honestly, that’s my only real complaint about MH Tri on the Wii–that accessing your items on the fly can be a very fidgety process.

        • http://lukalovesgames.blogspot.de/ Alkaid

That sounds like a nice way to give better/faster access to the items. Seems like Capcom took a liking in the 3DS and it’s good to see that Nintendo tries to bring out more “core gamer” titles as with the DS.

Have to agree, even the motion controls were rather fun on the wii, even though I got into some tough spots when many enemies were around me. Especially with the “inventory”. It was really refreshing to see MonHun for a console as well. :)

The first trailer of the game looked really nice so far.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Can we hope for guest/ secret weapon master sword and shield this time?^^

      • Solomon_Kano

        I want to hunt Ganon!

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lolol.^^ That sounds really fun there lol.^^

  • No

    Vita. VIIIITAA!!!!

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I’m going to say this once, and only once. Console-begging is strictly forbidden on Siliconera. Please find our full set of posting guidelines here: http://bit.ly/LIfktr

If we see any sort of PS3/Vita begging in this post, you will be banned. We don’t want anyone questioning this, and nor are we going to debate it, so please don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Let’s nip this in the bud early on, and please don’t reply to this post. Carry on with discussion about the game itself as usual.

      • Peace Legacy

Ishaan and his irate respond to console begging is a humorous running gag that I found sadistically enjoyable

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

If I had a penny for every time someone did it… :(

          • Testsubject909

You’d probably have less then a dollar… (per two week, ergo per paycheck)

I think you should charge a dime at least.

  • Tatsumarii

I hope fists are a new weapon class in this game. I’d love to beat down a Tigrex with my bare hands! xD

    • Peace Legacy

I actually have been hoping for a knuckle weapon since MHF2.
Most of the time, Impact weapon type and the type that got the short end of the stick. A flexible and high mobility impact weapon like dual knuckle, with blocking and bonus in defense point to compensate for the reduce in strength comparing to hammer
Like a SS/DS of Impact weapon class

      • Draparde

that would be my new main…

    • Draparde

i can’t agree more…would be SO satisfying to knock out a monster by punching it in the face! XD

    • Testsubject909

      You craft a new weapon.

      It’s called. Bear Hands.

      • Solomon_Kano

        This needs to happen. NAO!

  • Go2hell66

Looking forward to seeing how the platforming elements work. Hopefully they give controls a good overhaul so no one has to ever use that god awful circle pad pro again. Does that thing even work with 3ds xl?

    • Suicunesol

      Hm…

^_^; You might want to look at this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/3ds-xl-circle-pad-pro/

      • Go2hell66

        Hahahaha i lol’d

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You don’t need the Circle Pad Pro for Tri G. The camera can be mapped to a virtual d-pad on the touchscreen.

      • Go2hell66

Yea i l know but i always have issues with Touchscreen controls, i’d rather they just map the camera to the l+r buttons and remap the rest of the controls

        • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

its not like you’re doing something complicated with the touch screen its just reading 8 simple directions. its not like playing a game on a smartphone that needs buttons.

the 3ds seemed like a perfect a fit for mh since it let’s your customize the hud and the virtual d pad. you can adjust the size and placement. from videos it seems to work just fine.

          • Testsubject909

While, if you ask me, extremely easy to adapt to it’s currently planned control scheme.

I will not deny that a second analog is the optimal solution here in terms of camera control.

Barring that. The use of the L and R button for simple camera turn with some smart automated camera zooming and angling, would serve quite well for it’s portable nature and fluidity of the gameplay.

          • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

I haven’t played Monster Hunter in a while but don’t the L/R buttons do something? Like it’s impossible to make them the camera controls since you’d have to reconfigure the rest of the controls?

That said, I never used the claw when I played the PSP MH games and I didn’t like controlling the camera with L/R in Birth By Sleep so I’d rather they not do that. Preferences though, if you like that scheme I’d understand why you’d want it.

          • Testsubject909

I don’t prefer the L/R to control camera, but I know how it can be appropriately set up for it. As it stands, they’re still making games with the mentality of using a right analog for full camera control and then converting the right analog control unto something else, whether it be the D-pad or the touch screen.

That’s far more backwards then rearranging the game slightly so that it can play more fluidly using the L and R button for camera turning and from there applying some smart zooming and angling pending context and priorities.

Basically, game designers seem unable to regress backward to prior settings and moving forward from there, effectively creating a quality product that works on a simple basis, and so instead of taking a step backward to take two steps forward, they’re taking a step forward only to end up having to take two steps backward by first applying the second analog type control scheme and then regressing the controls to fit the handheld it’s on.

  • Suicunesol

I gotta say, if any game is going to sell 3DS XL’s… it’s gonna be this. Big monsters need big screens.

  • Sheimi12

Those screens just remind me of Todd Howard’s “see those mountains? You can climb them” that draw distance is very nice!

  • Code

You know, I’m looking really forward to see how this completely overhauled mechanics effect how weapons work as well as the game’s balance as a whole >wW< Bestest partners ever~!

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m looking forward to seeing how it adapts Dragon’s Dogma’s climbing element. It was apparently shown in the trailer that we can climb on monsters now, so it’s cool to see that Capcom didn’t let that idea simply sit with DD.

I wonder when we’ll hear about if this is coming to NA or not? It’s still early days so I’m not too worried, but it would save me some trouble to simply know that we’re getting it. Screw when.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

The original Monster Hunter 4 trailer had that as well! You can watch it here:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q0OosCOxrw

      • Solomon_Kano

Ah, so it did! I completely forgot. Well, at least now we know that it’s actually a good mechanic in practice thanks to DD! This should be good.

        • Testsubject909

I wonder how many people will climb up on a dragon only to fly around and not actually try to slay him and just enjoy the ride.

          • Solomon_Kano

I know I will. That should be fun. It would be a lovely surprise if we could actually tame monsters to ride, but I won’t hold my breath for that.

          • Testsubject909

It’s something I hope is done for a sequel to Dragon’s Dogma.

Imagine if you could tame your own personal Griffin?

edit: And then train it, and whatnot in a manner relatively similar to your pawns.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I really hope they do that for DD too. I want a troll for a mount!

          • Testsubject909

You know how your pawn has a room? Well, your steed would be at a stable, or if to big, a fenced up backyard or something, but a special just for the troll, he’d be living under one of the city’s bridges!

          • Solomon_Kano

Yes, now I definitely want a troll. Calling him out from under bridges would be awesome.

          • Testsubject909

And call him Pink Princess just for laughs too.

  • AokiShizuku

After playing 3G, I’m seriously psyched for this game.

More gigantic behemoths to kill, more awesome loot to gather and more importantly…

MORE MEAT TO EAT! (I love watching my character guzzle huge pieces of meat)

  • Draparde

the logo kinda looks like some sort of moth-like monster’s head is under the M in monster…excited~

  • Nathan_GreeneIV

Since we can climb on monsters….. Then I shall ride on Kirin with my long flowing hair riding into the gates of bablyon and drink wine with odin and zeus………. Sigh……. I gotta stop watching step brothers…

    • Testsubject909

Or… Or, and this might sound crazy…

You should watch MORE step brothers…

      Maybe.

        I know what we’re thinking.

          hammer time?

  • DarthSithZero

No Vita!?!? WTF Capcom , Well I guess in going to wait for the MH4th for vita

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-de-Groodt/100000446926616 Mike de Groodt

I Seriously hope people would think before posting,

Being a Sony fanboy is nice an all but the fact that it’s on the 3DS has been known for quite a while.

And what happens next will stay a surprise

      • Testsubject909

I think it’s impatience and jitters and nervousness and whatnot. The Vita is in need of games right now and many gamers won’t have the same patience.

Me, I’m fine, I know LBP Vita is on it’s way, there’s also Ragnarok Odyssey that’s coming soon that will sate me nicely. Phantasy Star Online 2 and etc.

But each of those awesome games are all games that will require a heavy waiting time.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-de-Groodt/100000446926616 Mike de Groodt

might be off topic but does Sony Replace Vitas?

my Screen is cracked and I’m REALLY bummed out about it.

and I want to play Gravity Rush but yeah you know the rest.

          • Testsubject909

Well… You probably have some form of warranty on it, check your documents that came with your Vita when you purchased it, and try contacting Sony about it.

Also pending when you got it, check in with the store you purchased it from.

That’s all I can help you with. The only console I’ve had break down on me was the 360… And recently a very old DSlite after it suffered it’s untold number of falls.

    • Testsubject909

Well, look at it this way.

Monster Hunter V (5) sounds like it would fit quite a bit more on the PSVita.

      Just saying.

      • Solomon_Kano

That… that would be pretty awesome, actually.

        • Testsubject909

          Yup.

And I’d be ready for the wait.

          • Solomon_Kano

I would too, actually. It would be well worth it just for the perfect title lol.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Read our posting guidelines please. No console-begging around here: http://bit.ly/LIfktr

  • Skyer Ist

The situation is sooo interesting this time!

Main series for the home consoles aren’t selling like portable ones.
Max. in Japan is 1MM (MH tri for Wii), but now the main game is coming to the
portable system and if MH tri G (after existed original and 3rd) sold
there 1,5MM already (and it will do 2MM in the end of the year..), the
completely new game can sell those 4-5 million on 3DS…. So and become as
    big as “Portable” series.

“Portable”, first of all, are so popular because of form-factor, existing on a portable device (portables beat home consoles in Japan last gen)…

Even if we say that Vita will have “Monster Hunter 4th” after the
original release of 4, it’ll have it minimum in 2014 (gap between Tri
and 3rd – more, than a year), and this will be a bit too late…

And, of course, the series now isn’t going anywhere from 3DS (Capcom
has stated that Tri G was proven the potential and builded the
community), so in a portable space MH can’t dominate only on Sony
    platform this time.

And frankly, i’m shocked why Sony isn’t doing anything… Now 3DS has a lot of great games and more of them are coming… It’s a blockbuster multi-million tittles for a Japanese market, such as Mario (NSMB sold 6MM in Japan alone), Pokemon (6th gen incoming), Dragon Quest, Animal Crossing (5,5MM sold on DS in Japan), Tomodachi Collection (3,6MM sold on DS in Japan) etc; and a full pocket of cool games, but not a potential millionaires (you al know the names…) It has everything big and a lot of small for this market.

And Vita, OMG, has anything like this… FF X HD (remaster, developing for PS3 too)? lol.

    That’s the story.

    • Solomon_Kano

You’re shocked that Sony isn’t doing anything about what exactly? About MH? If so, there’s nothing they can do about that. Or did you mean something else?

      • Skyer Ist

        Yes, about MH… !

        • M’iau M’iaut

The 3rd party companies want to sell games, not consoles. Sony could not in any way come up with enough money to keep Capcom from not putting MH on the 3DS.

Even if Capcom wanted to turn its back on the far larger install base.

  • neonsword13

    Wait, 3DS?

    Why not Vita, Capcom?
