Celebrate The Tales of Xillia Announcement With These Screenshots

By Ishaan . July 10, 2012 . 12:00pm

Namco Bandai will release Tales of Xillia in North America and Europe sometime in 2013. While they haven’t shared specifics as to when the game will be released, or whether there will be collector’s editions, they did share a batch of screenshots for it this week.

You’ve probably seen some of these screenshots before, but hey, now you can pore over them again with the knowledge that you’ll get to play the game. In the meantime, you can catch up with our coverage of Tales of Xillia using its tag.

    I love this….so…so very happy….

  • KingGunblader

Ugh this is Tales of Graces f all over again. I’m SO hyped to play yet I know I won’t get to until 2013.

    • Anime10121

At least this time they’ve given us a release year with the announcement.  With Graces F, they released the Tales of Two Richards teaser site (around March last year if I recall correctly) to announce the game and nothing else was heard about Graces for over half a year.

Any news we heard about Graces F was from the localization company Namco hired to translate the game, which if I remember correctly they said they were finished in like August of last year and didnt know what the hold up was with Namco not saying anything.  They didnt release screen nor trailer until the middle of December which shockingly came with a release date of a couple months later.

So I say this is a MUCH bigger improvement over how they handled Graces’ announcement:)

Although considering Baba said they never even planned on localizing Graces, in hindsight, I’m even appreciative that it was even released in the west period.

      • KingGunblader

Speaking as someone who is still relatively new to the series, the enjoyment I got out of Graces is conversely proportionate (sp?) to how I excited I was for it.

I started with Symphonia, which I randomly found 4 years ago. I’ve since played Eternia, Legendia, Symphonia 2, and Graces f in that order. I bought Abyss 3DS on release day but I’m honestly about 15-20 hours in.

Graces f definitely has a cool battle system, but I enjoyed Symphonia and Eternia more. Symphonia 2 was ‘meh’. I don’t think I beat Legendia…?

Getting back on the topic of Xillia, the dual link system and seperate character campaigns is attracting me to it. If I don’t have Ali Hillis as Milla though, I’ll be very disappointed.

        • Anime10121

My advice, keep at it with Abyss as it is still to this day, my favorite Tales of game, the further you get in, the better the game becomes:)

I can definitely understand your feelings on Graces, as it wasnt (anywhere near) the best Tales of game.  It had a fantastic battle system, but the plot and music was extremely lackluster.

On Legendia, I ask that you try and finish Legendia to the end, as the main quest isn’t that thrilling, but the character quests after, are MUCH better and focus on characters other than Senel and Shirley.  The game loses its voice acting, but the story is a lot better.

If you liked Symphonia, youd probably also like Vesperia and Phantasia (play ONLY the PsOne version of Phantasia which you can get a translation patch for online as the GBA version officially released here was GARBAGE) considering they all take place on the same planet/world.  Although the time lines are thousands of years apart, they all have connections to each other and are all great games:)

  • Oh, it’s so nice to be able to hear this, while knowing I’ll be able to play this game one day

    • Carocaro4

is that the main battle theme? Sounds awesome.

      •  Main Battle Theme for the Final Dungeon, I think

      • Arrei

Whichever protagonist you pick gets a different set of main battle themes over the course of the game, actually.

  • SirRichard

It’s looking pretty gorgeous, perhaps moreso because we’ll actually be able to play it at some point.

  • Maumac77

None of these have words…..I WANT WORDS :I

  • Hoshi星

Good screenshots I guess but at least, you could have put screens wih localized text unless they haven’t start working on it.

  • Muffum

I was hoping for some English text to show that localization had actually begun, since that wasn’t the case with Graces f, which annoyed me. Eh, c’est la vie.

  • Xapth

I used to look at Xillia screenshots with jealousy, but now I look filled with contentment and anticipation.

  • Alphabet Soup

Really like the style of this game…reminds me that I need to change my computer wallpaper. :D

  • MrRobbyM

“Here’s some screenshots of a game you won’t get to play in a long time, which has a sequel releasing soon in Japan, oh, and no English text!”

I hate to sound unappreciative, I really am glad the game is getting localized, I really am, but this is such a tease.

  • DanteJones

Can’t wait to get my hands on Mil–err.. Xillia. Yes, Xillia.

  • YAY!  that is all.

  • cj_iwakura

Should’ve known better than to expect English text.

  • Dantis

Much more interested in this than I was Graces. Looks neat.

  • idrawrobots

    So pretty, except those hands.

  • xavier axol

it looks great!, but it would look alot better in my tv. ;-)

  • Spirit Macardi

I’d say that I hope we get the Star Driver outfits as well, but we didn’t get the Code Geass outfits for Graces.

  • Darkrise

I hope they’ll release the school outfits too, Milla looked so badass in the punk outfit!

  • AnimusVox

2013 is gonna be a good gaming year <3

    • I am honestly nervous a bit about next year. Not related to gaming but still. I very much worry about 2013.

      • World ends in 2012 (supposedly).  Vague response, hope your personal life is ok, because gaming is gonna be fiiine in 2013. :D

        • No it doesn’t. Mayan calendars work exactly the same way ours do. When one ends another begins.

          • Mike Conroy and Light Zero: graduates of KillJoke University. Hardly the point, I didn’t need the sum up of the Mayan calendar, but thanks for answering things to other questions

        • LightZero

There is a discovering of another cave that continues well past 2012. Hell the Mayans didn’t take into account of leap years so yeah the whole doomsday thing is a load of crap. I don’t even know why people believe in that nonsense.

        • MrRobbyM

I have a feeling we’ll see FFVXIII at some time in 2013. That’s all I would need to make 2013 any good.

          • Until you find out that *gasp* They won’t localize it for seemingly no reason…

          • January with Ni no Kuni and December with Versus will be ecstatic! Not to mention some games inbetween them.

        • Yah gaming is going to be pretty good it is more of a personal thing. Kinda silly thing too really. But thank you.

  • AuversLIVE

I don’t want to celebrate this I just want Vasperia!

    • kupomogli

It’s already on 360.  While I want the PS3, I’m glad a new game is coming out rather than something we already have the chance to own.  If you don’t own a 360 then there’s the chance you may own one in the future or the 720 will be backwards compatible.

The point is, we can have two different games rather than one game with extra dungeons on one version.

      • AuversLIVE

well it’s not just “extras” for some people, not everyone had/has a 360 and since a version exist it really isn’t outlandish to complain that a version came out on a console I have and to be kinda annoyed that it’s just being skipped.

    • Dimentionalist

      Tales fanbase: forever insatiable.

It isn’t a smart release anymore, nor is it likely to be profitable. It’s time to move on. Considering how numerous entries in the series are, it goes without saying that some will be left in Japan.

      • AuversLIVE

good thing i’m not a fan

    • Ladius

Baba said in a really recent interview that both Innocence R and Vesperia PS3 haven’t been considered for localization. Can we be happy about the series being back to life and enjoy Xillia instead of going on to flame Namco for an updated port of a game we already have?

      • AuversLIVE

i’m not interested in the rest of the series, Vasperia was the only one and it’s gone forever for like no reason other than “we don’t feel like it”.

        • Ladius

I’m sorry, but you’re making no sense. You’re arbitrarily clinging to a game you haven’t played as if it was some sort of Tales Holy Graal, while refusing to give even a chance to the other titles in the series that actually were released in the west.

Considering Graces f is a great game (and Xillia will probably be the same, albeit for different reasons), the only consequence of your stance is that you will miss out on a great jrpg while avoiding to help the series thrive in the west, which is the reason Vesperia PS3 wasn’t localized in the first place.

If you want Vesperia so desperately I can only suggest to buy the X360 version, it’s all but a beta considering it can easily last 120 hours even without the PS3 additional contents.

          • AuversLIVE

I played and seen enough of it to know I like it and I’ve played enough of other Tales games to know I don’t like them *shrug* I don’t know how it doesn’t make sense really.

If I had a 360 I’d have no reason to complain because I’d probably have owned the game ages ago, I don’t think it’s a very wise to spend over $100 for a console for a single game anyway…

  • Crevox

Honestly I might not even buy this until it drops in price. I played and own the Japanese version, and I wasn’t too pleased with Xillia altogether. Hopefully they add some new content or something?

    • MrRobbyM

Can you elaborate on what you didn’t like if you please? I would understand if you don’t. It IS a *Tales* article after all. I’m just curious because I have some speculations about the game itself.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well some of the fans had been affected with the bad view about xilia being incomplete here.

Well. Here I still think that xilia is quite good here after all, I did spend almost 80 hours for the game here.

        • Nitraion

I guess its matter of taste….
like i bleh about FF XIII but people chearing about it..
          but i don’t have trouble about that….
If i don’t like but other people like… so be it…

      • It’s incomplete. Baba has even admitted this himself.

        • Ladius

No, Baba said they had to cut contents during the development, something that happens with every single videogame ever released. Then, fans twisted an absolutely innocent comment from an interview and used it to proclaim that Baba himself had condemned his own game, something he obviously wouldn’t do. Later, he went on record to tell what was already obvious: every game follows this same path, and having contents unsuitable to the final product trimmed down during development doesn’t mean being incomplete at all.

          • Crevox

Compared to other Tales games, it lacks content; and thus people deem it “incomplete.” It doesn’t fit the the standard they’ve set forth over the many years.

          • Ladius

After seeing a complete list of Xillia’s in game contents, I can safely say it’s still one of the meatiest jrpgs released on home console this gen, regardless of the fact that it has less than Graces f; bashing the game as “incomplete” when it’s still huge compared to most jrpgs released this gen is rather absurd.

Also, the huge improvement in Xillia’s overall presentation is also ignored by most who make those comparisons, but is a pretty big factor.

      • Crevox

I’ve explained it many times in the past, but to summarize…

Meh, there’s many reasons… one is the fact that it is incomplete. People will be like “oh so it’s missing a little content that’s not enough to not like a game” that’s true, but it just suffers from many other issues. It really does suffer from a lack of content compared to other tales games and RPGs in general, but…

I just don’t really entirely enjoy the battle system, it feels quite simple. It’s simple, easy, and when it tries to get hard, a lot of people feel it’s unfair difficulty (there’s nothing you can do). The bosses go super armor and do unavoidable attacks and spam mystic artes/link artes at you. Usually YOU can dodge or stay alive, but your AI won’t, and there’s really not much you can do about it a lot of the time. Since some of the bosses mystic artes (most) hit in a large area (or the entire party), if one AI gets clipped by one attack, then everyone suffers, including you.

The link system is kinda clunky, not a fan of the auto combo thing. It forces you to rely on AI that you CANNOT tweak, the only way to keep your partner away from the mob is to spam requests for them to cast spells. Every battle ends up the same as the last, and you can just spam link artes (usually the same couple) to victory. This makes the game easy no matter what you’re up against (and it doesn’t help that mobs can be infinitely combo’d quite easily). Even then, there aren’t that many link artes in the game, and a lot of them are just bad and you wouldn’t use (while some are overpowered and win fights instantly). You would think the link system would be great for 2 players, but no, you cannot link to another player. This means if you’re playing with 3 people you only get 1 link, and with 4 players you get ZERO, severely crippling yourself.

The majority of the fields look the same (there is no open world map). The shop system allows you to cheese the game by upgrading too far too early (it’s not gated, and it’s VERY easy to go further than you’re supposed to). Not only does it make the game easier, but it also makes any weapons/armor/accessories you find in dungeons trivial and useless, as you already have better.

Lilial orb system allows you to customize character stats to an extent, but it’s just the crystarium all over again. This is in addition to the fact that you don’t know where the good skills for your character will be in the next section, so you’re forced to bounce around to get what you want, or just let it auto stat for you.

I could go on, but meh. I just generally don’t have the same positive feel for the game that I had for the other games. Basically I could ignore the shop thing and make sure I don’t go OP, and don’t use the link artes that are good in order to flesh out the battles, and not worry about the skills in the lillial, and not worry about the end game content, and… blah blah blah… but it’s too much to ignore and too much to try to make up for the game just lacking. I enjoyed the battle system at first, but it gets bland and when it gets bland, it gets boring. Graces has generally kept me entertained the whole way through. The game just needs more content and it would be more interesting and fun.

        • Interesting. I haven’t heard much about the battle system, so that’s neat peek. A friend of mind told me about it, and all she said was that you can do link artes, but the other guy loses control of his character or something like that.

But she still said it was really fun.

          • Crevox

It is, I did enjoy it… but after a while I was just bleh about it. It also happens after you realize how cheap it is for you (and the enemy bosses sometimes).

        • Nitraion

Your comment remind me when i played FF XIII…..
Thrilling at first but bleh after a while… i even didn’t finish it
But people still playing FF XIII and now want FF XIII-3 and i still dunno why…i guess its matter of taste…sorry no offence for fans

        • MrRobbyM

Thanks a bunch. I heard complaints from other people but they never elaborated. Oh well, at least the characters and story seem interesting.

          • Crevox

I’m not gonna say it’s a bad game, I did like it, but it didn’t fit my expectations for a Tales game… ESPECIALLY not one hyped to this level of caliber.

          • MrRobbyM

I gotcha. I’m sure it will be enjoyable, Tales games always are for me, but now I know what to expect and will less likely be disappointed. Thanks again.

  • No english — clearly screens from the Japanese copy.

  • Kreygasm

  • Cephrien

    Yeah. that’s nice.

But we already know what the game looks like. Thanks. :I

    • You don’t know that. There could very well be new peeps or those who’ve just happened upon this game / announcement. Those who pushed it to the side not thinking it would come here. All this could be new to someone.

  • Can we have Innocence R too please?

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

This is good news we are getting more Tales of games!! I love the series so this announcement made me very happy! ^-^

  • Göran Isacson

Have to admit that I find it kinda hilarious how in one screen we see the male lead wear a pretty sensible looking, plain white t-shirt… then in all the other screens he has that flared neon green-trimmed coat and the girl is wearing bra and mini-skirt and various belts.

    Oh Japan. :)

  • Ladius

Can’t wait to see more, this announcement has been one of the best of the year alongside Growlanser Wayfarer of Time’s :)

Also, after having read a comprehensive list of all this game’s features I’m happy to say that Xillia is far better in terms of contents than what I feared reading some posts.

  • was wondering when you guys were gonna mention this n w n

  • Masengan

I can’t wait to start hearing the voices in English.

  • “I’m so excited! And I just can’t hide it!” *Dances* Can’t wait to put this game into my ps3~~

  • Valkenhayn

I wanna know if they take out the opening theme “Progress” and put in the instrumental version replacing the vocals…

  • MrJechgo

    Huh… where’s the English ?

Would it have killed them to release screenshots with translated text ? Right now, those are the same shots we saw when the game was first announced.

    • Ladius

They announced the game less than a week ago, almost no one is ready to release localized screenshots after such a short amount of time. Likely they’ve just started translating the in game texts and have still to reinsert them into the game.

  • Oh look! Screenshots! Wait…I feel like I’ve seen these before…

Next time, how about some English text before getting me excited? Just a humble request.

  • Hinataharem

Bamco is getting better with their localizations. I was surprised the Western countries would even get it.

  • Beautiful. I have been playing the trailer I downloaded from youtube to play on my PS3 for about 30 times since it’s announcement.

  • Need to ask something..
    Xilia is….
A game that the Male MC stalk the Female MC right??

  • puchinri

I’m much more excited about Xillia than I ever was Graces, but I still don’t entirely know how to feel. But it is quite grand that they’re localizing it, and I’m very thankful for that.

  • Tales_of_Master

Here is hoping for NB to do to TOX what they did to TotA NA release. TOX needs a few additions. New arts and a Cameo battle would be appreciated.

  • fayt255

At last Xillia gets announced! this is great news but really did like Graces a lot though. I didn’t think we would see Xillia!

  • Kai2591

Hopefully it will have Japanese audio this time around…

I just…can’t get myself to play another localized JRPG without the original Japanese audio anymore…ever since Valkyria Chronicles 2 (the horror!)

  • eilegz

since its going to release on the west did they announce any platform vita? xbox360 or only ps3?

    • Dimentionalist

      PlayStation 3 only.

  • Sergio Macellaro

Vesperia one of the best RPG of this gen (but in essence a HD version of TotAbyss); Graces a good remake of Wii game and now, ToX the first REAL N(Current)G game.
Thanks to BN i have some good RPG to play on Xbox/Ps³.
They have my gratitude for it.
Make Xillia a dual language option (i not a english speaker gamer, but the Us dub for recent Tales games are pretty good, i think) game and TAKE MY SOUL!!!!

    • LynxAmali

The comment of a HD TotA….

I’ve always considered Vesperia to be more or less a sequel of some sorts. Both in spirit and in terms of the world setting.

      Yeah, grasping at straws etc.
