Tales Remakes Coming With Improvements Says Series Producer Hideo Baba

By Ishaan . July 10, 2012 . 11:00am

Are you ready for more Tales remakes? They’re coming, says the series’ producer, Hideo Baba.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Baba recently confirmed: "We are planning to re-release old games to other platforms in the future, because the old games have some origin and offer standard features of the Tales series."

Baba elaborated that Namco plan to remake older Tales games with graphical and other improvements in order to make them more accessible and appealing.

As far as older games go, most recently, Namco re-released Tales of the Abyss for the Nintendo 3DS and Tales of Innocence R for the PlayStation Vita. While the former was a direct port, the latter was an updated remake.

  • Tales_of_Master

As a huge Tales fan myself, I couldn’t be happier with these news. I wish to see remakes for ToE, ToD2, ToS, ToR, ToL, and ToH. Hopefully NB will try localizing some of these remakes.

  • shirayuki75

I have never played Tales of Symphonia, so it would be wonderful if it was remade! Just don’t make it like Tales of the Abyss 3DS.

  • Xapth

My top candidates for a remake are Tales of Destiny 1 / 2, and Tales of Symphonia.

I’ve always dreamt of playing a full 3D Tales of Destiny, oh wow…

As for Symphonia, it’s a grand title and the story is amazing, and I’d love to see it remade in the style of newer Tales titles. (Try going back to Symphonia after playing something like Vesperia/Graces and you’ll see it feels SO SLOW)

This could also be their chance to add multiplayer capabilities to older titles, heck yeah!

  • International Rebirth and playable Legendia (Read: with better gameplay) should be their top priority.

  • I’m going to call it; Tales of Symphonia Collection for PlayStation 3.

    • Aqua King

      yes please.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

      That would be awesome.

  • This is great news if they get localized. As someone who started with Symphonia I’ve always wanted to try past Tales of games.

    • MrRobbyM

There is a full English translation patch for Phantasia if you don’t mind emulating it.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Careful there please Robby, even though it is a pretty slapdash version, one can also still track down the US GBA version as well.

        • MrRobbyM

I forgot that existed! Sorry. I think I disliked the GBA version which is why I only remembered the PS1 one.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Oh it’s easy to dislike, and I think perhaps the reason why we didn’t get any of the other portable Tales ports…but you know what I’m saying :P.

          • Tales of the Abyss is a portable port.

  • kupomogli

Tales of Destiny, ToD Remake, and 2 as a collection on Vita, 3DS, or PS3 please.  Will buy day one. Ports will do, you could always add an additional dungeon.

Either that or a remake of Eternia. I own it for PSX and PSP. I want the Tales of Destiny remake and Tales of Destiny 2 release more, as I’ve never played them due to being text heavy Japanese only RPGs, but Eternia is my favorite Tales game.

  • Whoomp

I don’t mind remakes, especially when it comes to the Tales of-series but given the present state of localizations at Namco it’s pretty disheartening that most of them (well, half at least) will fall between the cracks and never make it over to either Europe or America.

  • Anime10121

How about re releasing/remakin what a lot of people call the “best Tales of games” like Tales of Rebirth and Tales of Destiny 2 (the REAL one) on systems/handhelds and actually LOCALIZE them so the west can finally see what these “gems” are like.

I mean I still cant understand to this day how Tales of Destiny 2 got skipped over for localization when it sold almost a million copies in Japan alone.  I mean, it wouldnt be the first time we got two different games in the same series with the same name, i.e. Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis version) and Sonic the Hedgehog (PS360 version).

Also wanna try ToH, I can kinda understand how Innocence got skipped over considering it has a pretty competent fan translation out already (and IMO the game wasn’t that great).

  • Storywise, Phantasia is still the most interesting.  At a young age, I think it was one of the very first games I ever played that had a morally grey villain, and even after playing the other games in the series and going back to the original, I think it still holds the torch in terms of pacing, setting etc.

What DOESN’T hold up about that game, however, is the battle system.  Even with the improvements made in Phantasia Cross, it’s still, at best, a dumbed down version of Tales of Eternia.  I’d love to see them rework that game specifically with a new, improved battle system.  They could even just copy/paste the engine from Narikiri Dungeon X and I’d be fine with that.

    • LightZero

I agree. I’ve played the inferior GBA version but I was quite surprised with how strong the story was for a Snes title let alone compared to the later entries. It rivals Abyss as far as being my favorite Tales in the story department. It main flaws were the battle system. Although I’m sure the Japanese (and importers) are tired of Phantasia, but I would mind seeing it being remade with a more modern look but with the battle system of Graces.

  • MrRobbyM

Symphonia and every game before that remakes would be AMAZING. I’d really like a Symphonia remake only if they could get back most of the original voice actors for the main characters. Lloyd in DotNW was heart breaking.

    • Fidelis

I don’t like the idea of a symphonia remake.
If anything, yes, the battle system needs to be updated, but the graphical style was perfect for it.

I’d only really be comfortable with a cel-shaded Vesperia-esque look, and even then I wouldn’t really be too happy about it.

      • MrRobbyM

I too liked the heavily cel-shaded look of Symphonia and agree it was perfect for it but I would still like to see a remake.

I’m not one that’s so against remakes which seems to be a growing popularity. The original will always be there for you to enjoy, a new game will not ruin that. I think it’s the idea that people would want to re-live a game in a somewhat new light but don’t want their idea and feelings of the game to be touched, which I think is silly.

I too would want a Symphonia remake to be absolutely perfect, but you can’t please everybody. I agree that it would look good with the Vesperia-esque cel-shading if not a bit heavier.

      • Nathan Auroro Korvis Walsh

I’d be satisfied with original everything (upscaled maybe) and trophy/achievement support on 360/PS3/PSV

        • MrRobbyM

^This. Trophies for RPGs are always a welcome addition.

  • ragnarok989

It’s Hearts and Tempest getting remakes like Innocence got. They STROOOOOONGLY hinted at it with the pre order bonus skit in Innocence R along with a ton of stuff in the actual game.

    • Lightthrower

As long as they remake it for the Vita like they did with Innocence R, i’m up for it! Game looks great, only has to be localized now though :-P

  • SpecDotSign

The FULL version of Vesperia on Vita. Make it happen Bamco’

    • KingGunblader

Wow I like this idea a lot! I never even played Vesperia because I don’t have a 360. Plus it would give Squeenix a little friendly competition with FFX HD.

      • Nathan Auroro Korvis Walsh

I just want something while waiting for Vs XIII (local ToV PS3 seems more likely though)

    • MrRobbyM

You know, at least you’re not saying “OMG GIME VESPERIA LOCALIZED NAO T_T!!!!”

I’d much prefer a localized Vita version. I already played it on console, so a Vita version would be nice.

    • Nathan Auroro Korvis Walsh

      I thought it was Namdai?

      • MrRobbyM

Bamco rolls off the tongue easier. Besides, it has character. BAM!-co is simply fun to say.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

You know, as someone who owns Vesperia on 360, I still think if they just made a localized version on Vita while skipping out on the PS3 version that fans have been calling for for such a long time, that’d be considered a pretty big middle finger to the PS3 fanbase. They’ve been doing such a great job of building good will since their Western releases failed (I almost feel like I should be thanking Ninja Theory for Enslaved, because its failure lead to all these Japanese RPG’s), that that might be counterproductive, unless they do what Square-Enix are doing with FFX and made it for both.

      • SpecDotSign

That is a SOUND argument. I wouldn’t mind a version for both. I have the 360 version, but my 360 red ringed :(
But hey, at least Bamco is on it.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

Yeah, I have it on 360, as well. Love it, but would probably pick up a PS3 copy, just to support the franchise, and to see if Patti effects the story in any great manner.

  • Roberto Armando Iraheta

If they can get some of their older 2D offerings that’d be great.

  • Now We need is Vesperia PS3 Port. Plz Going love Tales Series.

    • MrRobbyM

As much as we would all love that, it’s not going to happen. People need to really let that go already.

The day I see a localized Vesperia PS3 is the day I will eat my own socks.

      • Darkrise

… I’ll eat your socks for you.

        • MrRobbyM

Grilled sock with BBQ sauce is amazing I hear.

          • Darkrise

Buffalo sauce is the way to go!

    • Darkrise

There’s an english patch for Vesperia ps3 that’s almost about 90% done. You can always go for importing the jp copy and applying the patch when it’s done.

      • Nemesis_Dawn

But you need a hacked PS3 to play it.

  • Youareallcryingmorons

Just…..Just give me all you can. I am so thankful for everything you give me. Please just continue to give me more.

  • KingGunblader

I’d prefer to see remakes of the games that never came out here (Hearts, Tempest, Destiny 2 etc.). So why don’t we start by localizing Innocence R? I’m going to buy a Vita when Persona 4 Golden comes out, and this would just be that much more enticing!

    • I agree with you completely good sir.

  • AuraGuyChris

Him and his team BETTER release those remakes for us.

  • Cephrien

A Symphonia remake with Vesperia visuals would be BAD-ass.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I’m all for this if there is any chance of localization.

I can’t help but think we’re reaching a stagnation point in the gaming industry with all of these remakes though.  Introducing games to new audiences is cool, but I feel like we could be heading towards a 1980’s type implosion if companies keep going for the quick cash-in.

    Just thinking out loud.

  • ZEROthefirst

Would still love to see Innocence R in the West. I never played Innocence but it looks great, and the Vita remake looks so much better.

  • Spirit Macardi

I’d like to see a remake of Phantasia for 3DS myself. Or heck, even just a port of Symphonia and/or its sequel to the same console.

  • Darkrise

I would LOVE! To see Tales of Destiny: Directors Cut, Tales of Rebirth and- You know what, AS MUCH TALES GAMES AS POSSIBLE in HD! I don’t care if they’re downloadable titles either.

  • klkAlexar

Are we getting Tales of Innocence R? I mean, we never got the original and the ps vita could always use more games here.

  • We still need Innocence R here. :( I so badly wish to play it.

    • PoweredByHentai

I wonder if they’ll even try to bring Tales of Hearts over.  There are two versions of Tales of Hearts: a CG animation version and an anime version.  Basically, one uses CG animation and the other uses more traditional anime for its cutscenes.

I’m… honestly not fond of the CG animation version since they somehow made Xenosaga’s CG animation look much better in comparison.

Bringing over the rest of the Tales of the World Radiant Mythology games would be nice.

Aside from those, Phantasia and Destiny 1 and 2 sound like perfectly fine candidates.

      • They won’t bring ToH unless it is ported like Innocence. Well… so far with Innocence they aren’t bringing it over yet. But you know what I mean. >_<; And I'd be happy with any and all I can get my hands on and ones I can't because I don't own the system.

        • PoweredByHentai

Innocence wasn’t that well known and it surprisingly got a Vita port.  It might be because there weren’t two versions of the same game.

The Radiant Mythology games are surprisingly addicting.  I don’t know why, but they are.  >_<

I think it had to do with the different equipment pieces being reflected on your personal character with random stat or effects boosts.

I also think that bringing Eternia over would be a problem, largely because of the He-Man franchise.

          • Like I said any and all. lol

  • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

I like the Tales of series even more than Final Fantasy, but it sucks that they don’t release more titles to the west.

  • DarkWaterClone

Well how about releasing Tales of Innocence R first in North America. I so would gladly buy that if it comes out over here.

    • Or at the same time. You know whatever works.

  • Byron Brauner

I was JUST talking to a good friend last night that a Tales of Destiny Directors Cut (PS2 remake), plus the REAL Tales of Destiny 2 for the PS3/Vita would be a MUST own (translated of course)……throw Rebirth on that list.

  • I want remake of Tales of Phantasia and Eternia for Vita, with western release. Or, at least, PS One version of Phantasia patched with ETP by Cless & Co :) It’s impossible, I know, I know… Hope Innocence R will have western release too.

    • Tien Ron

  • Jirin

What I really want is Tales of Destiny R.  Destiny, IMO, has the best plot in the Tales series, but terrible combat, and people who’ve played the remake says the combat is fixed.

I also want Rebirth.  I played that on import, and loved it, but it’d be nice to play it properly.  I’m not a huge fan of Tales of Destiny 2, since it had a crappy plot and horribly balanced combat.

I know nothing about the DS ones we didn’t get, but anything they release on a system I have I’ll get.

  • YES!!! This means us Westerners might get a chance to fully enjoy some of the old Japan-only “Tales of” Games!

  • RaikageV

Tales of Symphonia on 3DS please. :)

  • Göran Isacson

I wonder what means they would use to deliver these remakes with. Rereleases for portable platforms? Or maybe releasing them online via PSN, Xbox Live… Steam? If I can dream?

    • Ladius

Tales games are built mainly for the Japanese market, so I think we can forget anything on PC. For the same reason, I think their ports and remakes will continue to be retail releases first and foremost (for handheld consoles, most probably), since that’s the venue they have used till now.

  • asch999

Tales of Hearts R with at least Destiny R Graphic

  • asch999

Tales of Hearts with Destiny R graphic

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

This is awesome!! It opens so many doors of opportunities and hopefully i can play tales of symphonia again :3

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Whatever it is, I think making them lower priced PSN downloads would be the way to go.

    • Leivinia

I’m not against the idea of having PSN DLs, but I’d also want retail copies so I can monopolize on shop privileges for collector derping.

      • Nemesis_Dawn

I’d like retail copies too, but I’m just saying what I think the best business move would be for them.

  • Anesia Hunter

Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Symphonia! I chanted it 3 times, so it must come to be. ^.^

  • maxchain

I can only hope Namco Bandai Holdings USA will also be using a beautifully-upscaled dartboard to continue the usual method of determining which Tales games make it overseas.

    • Ladius

How so? As much as I would like to see every Tales game brought this side of the ocean, choosing to localize only mothership games is all but random, especially when the other entries they could have chosen are either on PSP (practically dead here) or Vita (still struggling to build a decent userbase).

  • MrJechgo

How about you remake Tales of the Tempest so you can replace it back as a mothership title ?

  • Brandonmkii

Phantasia PSX and Destiny PS2 are kind of perfect the way they are, so maybe Eternia, Rebirth, or Tempest should get a second go.

  • Guest

For some reason, I can’t get excited about this. Not until they localize Innocence R first. I’m just content that Xillia is finally coming over. :)

  • Suicunesol

I want Tales of Phantasia remake. On anything. Anything at all.

    …fat chance.

    • MrJechgo

Tough luck buddy… ToP, from the SNES, got a PSX, GBA and even a PSP remake (it is included in Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, with Rondolinne as an extra PC).

  • Symphonia remake, with Graces F style combat? *prepares for haet*

but I would like to see some remakes.

    • MrJechgo

      OMG, I would LOVE that.
      – No more double arte tree shenanigan (I swear, I screwed Colette’s progression by unwillingly switching her from Strike to Technical in between the learning of two artes… I couldn’t get back on track because of that.)

      – I could go with Symphonia’s camera though, with the ability to side-step, dodge and stuff like that.

      – Raine and Genis would be mainable without any help, because the CC system has 2 kinds of artes: A-Artes, which are weapon-based, and B-Artes, which are either weapon-based or spells. Both would end up with physical artes, which would be a boon for them. In Graces F, Cheria, Malik and Pascal can actually defend themselves properly because of that, and they do not get screwed in the arena.

      – Sheena would FINALLY have her summon spirits as spells, instead of having her be in Overlimit, which in Symphonia you couldn’t control at all like you could in Abyss and Vesperia.

      – Everyone would have 1, 2 or 3 mystic artes, which would be a good thing.

      – You could go some serious combos with Lloyd, Kratos, Zelos, Presea and Regal with the A-Artes chains. You could also go with Colette, Raine, Genis and Sheena in more up close combat as well.

  • Nitraion

Hmm the old tales title I only played Tales of eternia and Tales of Legendia…..
Remake huh eternia is already good in my option maybe Tales of legendia?

    • neocatzon

Yes, this is what I’m searching for using Ctrl+F, more love for Legendia. This black sheep of Tales series has the best music, but awful gameplay. LMB is good but they need to polish it more, improve cooking, give it item creation or something, more content (story, music, anything, character’s story is not long enough), and last.. multiplayer. I can’t believe they didn’t put at least a channel ring..

That and remake of phantasia with multiplayer

  • WyattEpp

When they say “more accessible and appealing”, I become worried that they’re going to make 2D battles into 3D battles.  I’m probably an outlier here, but I really just dislike the 3D systems (a la Symphonia) in Tales.  It might be fine for Star Ocean (sort of), but Tales is Tales.

    • Ladius

And Tales has had lots of beloved 3D entries since last gen, I’m not sure I follow you (aside from your personal preferences, of course). Even Star Ocean wasn’t full 3D since the start.

  • “We are planning to re-release old games to other platforms in the future, because the old games have some origin and offer standard features of the Tales series.”

You already did that, home-boy. The only problem was you didn’t do it in English. Tales of Phantasia FVE, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Rebirth and in some way, Tales of Destiny R. ~_~()

  • Remakes all the game we haven’t get yet and releases them in English.

    • Christopher Nunes

Tales of Rebirth, Tales of Destiny 2 (the true one), Tales of Eternia, Tales of Hearts…

What other Tales game we didn’t get? Hmm… I would LOVE a Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology remake of 2 -3 so we can finally get them! ^_^
Though I doubt Escort Titles are getting the treatment… I just love the RM series because the players can add themselves into the game or make their dream Tales hero/ine! Now if they added the ability to switch out the Descender with a Tales character without cheat codes that would be an excellent feature!

  • Hinataharem

    Eternia please.

  • Souji Tendou

Destiny (Remake) ~Director’s Cut~ on PS3 please? And localize it, pretty please?

  • Christopher Nunes

So many Tales games to choose from!

Tales of Rebirth, Tales of Destiny 2 (the true one), Tales of Eternia, Tales of Hearts…What other Tales game we didn’t get? Hmm… I would LOVE a Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology remake of 2 -3 so we can finally get them! ^_^
Though I doubt Escort Titles are getting the treatment… I just love the RM series because the players can add themselves into the game or make their dream Tales hero/ine! Now if they added the ability to switch out the Descender with a Tales character without cheat codes that would be an excellent feature! I wouldn’t mind a new RM game on the VITA featuring all Tales characters from the past RM series and include new ones (like from Innocence R’s new characters and Tales of Xillia), with improved battle system, character organizing system, storyline, and character creation system.

    • LightZero

We got Tales of Eternia btw.

      • Christopher Nunes

A meant a remake of it, and with it’s proper name.

  • Nirun Rangraengjit

Symphonia HD please…oh and Vesperia ps3?Phantasia HD?
and everything else we outside of japan didntget?

    • Don’t expect ToV PS3, Baba is the hold out in this instance, google it a bit– apparently it was a burden to release ToV as a semi-simultaneous release, so he and the team decided to lessen the burden and develop only for Japan.

Namco US came out tody with a statement saying they were asking every six months, but we given a no directly from Baba himself.

      • Ladius

As the Grand Knights Story fiasco showed us, localizing a game can be a really big burden on a developer. I imagine they having their hands full non-stop with new mothership games didn’t help with having free people to dedicate to text insertion, recoding and so on.

  • vanhyde

tales of hearts 3D plis :D

    • LightZero

I agree. I’ve been waiting to play that game for years and wasn’t disappointed it was never localize for the DS.

  • Andar

Honestly, I’m pretty pleased with the general shift in attitude for the series in the west. It feels like there’s actually a second chance, and I’d love nothing more than to see that continue. Especially if it leads to remakes of games we never saw in English, getting localized. I won’t ‘demand’ it the way some fans may end up doing depending on what is announced in Japan, but I think it could go very well to fill a market that has the right openings now.

    •  I’m not sure if they will release old Tales games that never made it to the U.S. because frankly some of them didn’t do that well even in Japan. But it’s great that they keep localizing the big titles and if the sales will be good in the West than they won’t have any reason to stop. Sound good to me.

  • I don’t care because…
    1. they’re gonna be on handhelds
    2. they’re not gonna be localize

    • Ladius

I agree most ports are gonna be handheld ones, but Abyss 3DS (and Eternia PSP in Europe) suggests they aren’t completely against having them reach the west. Then again, I think everyone here prefere Namco to dedicate its energies to localize new mothership games rather than old ports.

    •  Would you have preferred to have Tales of the Abyss on the PS3? It wouldn’t look very good, considering the low PS2 graphics it used. And Tales of Innocence? That was a DS game. You cannot release a DS game on a major console and you know it. So:
      1) They have to be on a handheld.
      2) They are being localized. Tales of the Abyss has been localized, and if it sells well than there’s a good chance for Tales of Innocence. But that really isn’t the point here. Tales fans can get really annoying. Seriously every major Tales games in the last five years has been license and released in the U.S. (with Xillia on the way). So what are you whining about?

    • LightZero

You act as if good games can’t appear on handhelds. If you are a jrpg fan you pretty much have to own a handheld system. I unfortunately don’t see the console scene changing in this regard next gen.

  • puchinri

I kind of want to see Phantasia through Hearts get ports or remakes. ToD+2, Eternia and Rebirth especially. And I really hope they’ll get localized if so.

  • Brandon001

see, normally i’d be excited as a fan, but LOL, we won’t be getting any localizations of these remakes because *insert namco’s lame reasons why*

Shame, if they remade Symphonia and brought it over, i’d get it day one.

  • Why can’t they just translate Tales of Destiny Remake ? :(

  • keithmaxx

Tales of the World on 3DS would make my day and rock my world! (It would make perfect sense in this generation.)

Also, Destiny and Eternia on eShop/PSN sound great.

Oh, and porting Vesperia for the WiiU would be perfect (regardless of what fanboys would say)… else I’d have to dive in with its JP version on the PS3. I guess we’ll have to wait until mid-2013 to find out more.

  • LightZero

Just give me Destiny Remake, Hearts, Rebirth, and Destiny 2 on the 3DS/Vita (preferably 3DS) then I’m happy. I have to tough time deciding which one between Rebirth and Hearts I want to play more since I hear they have cool stories. I know that Destiny Remake has a really good battle system. Either way I’m surprise Namdai is being a little bit better towards the west market with this series.

  • deathman00789

  • Nee Nee

    Symphonia ps3 please

  • Joshua Miller

Now all we need is phantasia re-release XDI really want to play that one again
