Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono Hints At Darkstalkers

By Spencer . July 12, 2012 . 1:56pm

For Capcom’s Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Celebration panel at Comic-Con today, series producer, Yoshinori Ono, dressed up in a Blanka costume took the stage. But it wasn’t just Street Fighter he talked about.

Ono said that if you’ve been to these Comic-Con panels before, you’ll know that he’s asked fans to hold up $5 or $10 bills to show support for a Darkstalkers game and he snaps a photograph to take back with him to Capcom as evidence of fan support.

This time, however, Ono stated: "This year, you don’t have to do that, and it’s not necessarily bad news!" Ono then followed up, clarifying that he has to be careful what he says or he’ll get in trouble.

So, does that mean a new Darkstalkers game is in development at Capcom? A rumour that originated from Venture Beat earlier this year says that it is, and that it will run on a modified version of the Street Fighter X Tekken engine.

Please yes. Anything to get away from Street Fighter.

    • Domii

Oh c’mon, you make it sound like resent Street fighter games sucked. Although I’m pretty sure you’re talking about fatigue.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

    • Jon McGuire

Hey, I still love SF and I always welcome more games as long as they’re fun and not bullshit like SFxT.

  • Jon McGuire

Well, I guess it’s happening. Finally.

Pretty boring we didn’t get a teaser or any concept art to gander at, I hope they do Demitri and Lord Raptor justice.

  • “Ono then followed up, clarifying that he has to be careful what he says or he’ll get in trouble.”
Or you know, Ono just doesn’t want to say anything that would actually be a concrete answer for once. ;) Heeheehee. (That’s his usual answer, right?)

While I typically try not to be a negative nancy on Siliconera or the like, this one doesn’t feel so much like news. It feels like pretty much every time Ono opens his mouth in public, which is to dangle a carrot in front of us so he can watch us salivate.

If there’s going to be a new Darkstalkers, awesome. Can’t wait to see it! (Truly!) But it’d be nice to actually hear that instead of the usual “You all want Darkstalkers. Wouldn’t it be great if there could be a new Darkstalkers?” and all the indecisiveness that follows.

  • Tales_of_Master

Darkstalkers 4 ? I never thought I would see the day. Here is hoping for regular models this time instead of the blocky lego-like models of SF4 and SFXT.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Sadly, I doubt they’ll ever go back to 2D for fighting games ever again.

      • Mike Pureka

Doesn’t mean they can’t change the art style though.  It’s one of the worst things about SF4.

    • AfroMessiah

Another thing to think about, is how the characters will transfer over to an engine like SFXTK. Just about every move each character does involves a lot of shapeshifting(legs turning into scythes, claws extending and what not). I just don’t see them keeping the original movelists with this developement team and engine. I’d much rather see a new Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers on a modified Marvel 3 engine since we’ve already seen three characters from the franchise run on it.

  • shindoihayato

Even if it’s not new, I’d take arcade quality ports on PS3 or 360 and still be happy…

    • Solomon_Kano

I’d love to have an improved Chronicle on my PS3.

  • Domii

I’ve never had a chance to play any of the Darkstalkers games, but taking a break from Street fighter will sure be nice for us fans and Ono. And this is coming from me, a Street fighter fan since I was in diapers.

    • Solomon_Kano

If you have a PSP (or Vita), you should definitely pick up Darkstalkers Chronicle. One of the best fighting games I’ve ever owned, and I just bought it earlier this year.

  • mikanko

I love Vampire Savior, but I have very mixed feelings if a sequel is being made by the dimps team.  I would much much prefer a new game made with Neo_G and the eighting guys that worked on Marvel 3.

    • Jon McGuire

Neo_G did work on Vampire Savior. Maybe this is a good idea.

I just hope they don’t butcher everyone like they butchered poor Hsien-Ko in MvC3.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

No no no. Keep it far away from the MVC3 team.

      • mikanko

I think when the other choice is the SF X T team, it could be argued which is the lesser evil. :p

        • Nemesis_Dawn

Considering the crappy fighting style, the “let’s release a new retail revision, instead of a DLC one” attitude, and the lack of single player content (I mean, come on…still pictures as endings in this day and age? And no intros for the characters? And no rival battles?!?) in MVC3, I would prefer the SFXT team every single time.

          • mikanko

I think you are focusing a bit strongly on areas the primary development team for the game has very little to do with.  I am only concerned with the gameplay, and fighting games are first and foremost 2 player games.

The people who decide things like storyboards or planning DLC have little to do with actually designing of the fighting game systems and mechanics.  Neo_G and eighting have more developers that worked on older Darkstalkers games, and I think they’re a better fit for a new game.

Yoshinori Ono is a good guy, and without him SF4 could possibly have never seen the light of day.  The guy is primarily a human resources specialist though, and not much of an expert on fighting games.  I have no qualms with him producing the game, I am just not happy with what the development team at Dimps churned out when asked to make a faster paced more accessible game than SF4.

Disc locked content fiascos and pay to win gems aside, SFXT is a game that a lot of people aren’t happy with.  Since its release the playerbase has only dwindled.  All hate UMvC3 has received for whatever reasons, it’s still a game that fans of the series are actively playing and enjoying.  While there’s an SFXT defense force out there, I do believe they’re a bit of a minority.

          • Nemesis_Dawn

I’m not 100% in the SFXT tent, myself, since I think there are many things that need to be fixed about it (cross combos, I think should use meter and I would love the option for an infinite time limit), but 1) I would prefer SFXT to MVC3 any day of the week. The gameplay in MVC3 is just not fun. It’s first person to do a launcher and then go into a rushdown combo is usually the winner. It’s not the game of chess that something like SF4 is.

Take away all the single player aspects that SF4 does way better than MVC3 (although if we’re gonna talk multiplayer, the fact that MVC3 released without spectator mode should disqualify them from even touching something like Darkstalkers) and you’ve still got a better game. Darkstalkers always played more like SFAlpha than MVC to me and therefore it should stay within the Street Fighter family when it comes to the next installment.
The single player aspects are hugely important, but even without them, SF4 and SFXT outclass MVC3/UMVC3 in every possible way.

          • mikanko

The people designing the fighting system aren’t working on things like netplay, story modes, or single player extras.  That is the result of Ono’s success as a human resource manager and SF4 likely having a bigger budget and time allowance for those things.  Marvel’s online is pretty horrible, with or without spectator mode, but it’s not really something to blame Neo_G and the fighting design team for.

Marvel is evidently not a game for you, but there is a good deal of strategy going into both team synergy and how to counter various characters mixups.  It is not as methodical as SF4, but it is a far cry from being brain dead.  There are a lot of Marvel players who don’t like SF4, and SF4 players who don’t like Marvel 3.  It’s cool that both games have their respective playerbases and fans.  SFXT hasn’t had this success, and I think shows as a bit of a stain on their resume for the time being.

Neo_G was the fighting designer on CvS2, SF3 Third Strike, Darkstalkers 3, MvC2, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  I think it’s wrong to jump to the conclusion that if he was to work on a new Darkstalkers game it’d be Marvel 3 all over again.  I would not want a Darkstalkers game to play like Marvel 3, just as I wouldn’t want it to play like Street Fighter 4.  I just want the game to be closer to the orignal series as possible, and I feel the Eighting guys have had better success at this than Dimps has.

… I also really hate games relying so heavily on plinking one frame links, and kinda don’t want to see that stuff find its way into a new Vampire game, but that’s more personal preference!

  • Tee Niitris

So it is really happening huh… all I can say is that it took long enough.

Don’t screw this one up Capcom.

  • xavier axol

i have fantasies about morrigan, i think that she is the face of undertakers just like how ryu is the face of streetfighters. off topic how about a crossover undertakersxtekken, we would have lili, sakura and morrigan all fighting for me. Oohh! morrigan no!! you bad girl. ok my body is ready.
(hey don’t look at me, “i play that scenario a million times lady!”)

p.s. dave chapelle is an awesome comedian

  • Heavenly_King

I would like a reboot of the story, considering how many years have passed.

    •  That would be quite awesome. A few new characters would be awesome as well.

    • ZBaksh386

but is it neccessary tho as is Darkstalkers story hard to follow?

  • Carlito Cabada Jr

Good to see Ono still going strong in light of recent events. SFxT was a misstep, but I can’t help but love the guy.

  • ZBaksh386

I wanna see original DMC crossover with Darkstalkers.

    • Jon McGuire

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Original Dante as an extra character might actually work.
New guy, though? That would be enough to make me not buy the game.

      • ZBaksh386

I just mean the whole DMC cast such as Nero, Vergil, Lady etc as well as oG Dante to join in. Its seems only natural given that both series are about demons fighting demons. Its a literal no brainer. So add in them and some other clover characters like amerterasu, VJ and Gene and your golden.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

No! No! No! Then that’s not Darkstalkers anymore. That’s Marvel vs. Capcom 3 without the Marvel part. Capcom vs. Capcom?

          •  Nah, Capcom Fighting Evolution 2.

          • ZBaksh386

Alright, sorry, got a little carried away.
But its not that much of a stretch to bring the OG DMC characters in it.

  • ivanchu77

Unless they show pics and a trailer i won´t waste my time, I have hear rumors that Darkstalkers are coming back for years now -_-

  • Michael Revis

They did the same thing last year, and I’ll be saying the same thing I did then: Call me when an actual reveal is out.

  • thundergodCN

The day you hear rumours about a new Darkstalkers was the greatest day of your life, but for Yoshinori Ono it was tuesday.

  • countupyoursins

“Capcom teases new Darkstalkers” my brain now sorts with “Click here to claim your $1000 gift card!”

  • “says that it is, and that it will run on a modified version of the Street Fighter X Tekken engine.” Ugh stop making me not want it…why not just use the Darkstalker engine/Improve it…ugh

    • What darstalker engine?

    • popyea

I’m assuming you mean keep 2D graphics?

  • MrJechgo

Why does he tease instead of announcing ? I don’t even…

    • FFmax

It’s Ono it’s kinda his thing.

    • Because he can’t just go ahead and announce it if it’s really early on in development. I’m sure they want to have something concrete and impressive to show when they do officially announce it.

      • MrJechgo

Isn’t the game rumored to be in dev for like 2 years now ? If so, what wouldn’t be suitable to show ?

  • Nitraion

Don’t lock char and don’t make beta version take your time and make complete version..

  • FFmax

“And that it will run on a modified version of the Street Fighter X Tekken engine.” F***. But seriously they had better not ruin this, the Darkstalkers series has a lot of fans.

    • neo_firenze

You realize the SFxT engine is just a modified SF4 engine, right? I know a lot of people dislike a lot of things about SFxT: DLC, the gem system, match pacing (e.g. time out).  But the technical merit of the engine isn’t really an area that gets complaints, nor does it deserve them.

      • FFmax

I was just joking with the first sentence, hence why I said “Seriously” to start off the next. I know there wasn’t anything wrong with the battle system for the most part. But I’m a big fan of Darkstalkers because their combat was fast, Street Fighter IV felt too slow and St X T was ruined by gems.

        • neo_firenze

OK, but I’m just wary of opening the door to yet another SFxT complaint-fest.  No place for it in this article.

I don’t think there’s really much to worry about here in terms of technical limitations, the SF4-based engine is quite capable on a technical level and the speed is really a design choice.  Just like Vampire Hunter (aka Nightwarriors) was blazingly fast even though other games on the same/modified engine were much slower paced – including Super SF2 and even the original Darkstalkers (which is PAINFULLY slow).

  • Katamari Toys

if it will be as good as SF4, MVC3 and TxSF then count me  out

    • Solomon_Kano

      Except TxSF isn’t out.

  • Real Doom: “There’ll be a new Darkstalkers game before you get up from that!”

I grew up also with the 2D era of Darkstalkers/Vampire series along with SF Alpha, SF3 and Marvel Versus being popular Capcom arcade games back then.

The Street Fighter and Marvel Versus gets the current 3D treatment, and intriguing as well how Darkstalkers 4 will shape up; Especially with the new fantasy/monster characters that could be added to the classic roster that included the vampire Demitri, the werewolf Jon Talbain, the Frankenstein creature Victor and the mummy Anakaris.

  • Göran Isacson

And here all I wonder is if they will make Demitri sparkle, and Morrigan for some reason be involved in a love triangle between her, Demitri and Talbain.

    Just kidding ;)

  • Solomon_Kano

The day I get a new Darkstalkers trailer, I’ll be too happy.

  • Hinataharem

I will literally cry if this game becomes real. I’m not kidding.

  • SirTeffy

They should bring in Tessa for the reboot. I mean, she IS a perfect fit and her game IS forgotten (Red Earth)…

    •  Yeah, she being a witch would be compatible with the other Darkstalkers generally monster themed roster.

    • Göran Isacson

Heck, bring in ALL of the Red Earth roster… was my knee-jerk reaction, but then I remembered that Darkstalkers is essentially a Horror Movie-themed beat-em-up, and while Witches are horror they already have a werewolf so they don’t need a lion-man, and a dinosaur and kraken may count more like “monster action” movies than horror movies.

  • Woo!

  • Anita all grown up

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    Darkstalkers??? I came.^^

  • XiaomuArisu

Please dont suck! Please dont suck!

  • Setsu Oh

i hope it will be modified enough so it doesn’t look like any of their past games.
is UMVC3 on the same engine as SFXTK?

  • I am more than a little excited for this one. Ever since really getting into SF4 I dreamed what Capcom could do with the original designs–like a lot of Akiman’s work. Grotesquely disproportionate yet still very, very cool.
Also, Morrigan. The past couple of Morrigan models have been really, really boring. I think Morrigan rendered SF4-style would look pretty amazing. And Phobos/Huitzil. Please put Huitzil in the game. Please oh please oh please…

  • As long as it’s a fighting games i’ll be all overit!

  • xxx128

    Dear Yoshinori Ono, dear Capcom…
There is a certain cartoonish/anime charm about the darkstalkers…
Ok lets try it another way, the “vampire”-series has a certain arcade oldschool heritage which does not translate very well into a shitty 3d engine.
Well in short and for the love of god keep your greedy DLC-ridden hands of the classics and come up with something original please

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Can I borrow your time machine? Because, obviously, you’ve played the game already, so you can tell us all how well it translates to a 3D engine, right?

      • Haohmaru HL

we have street fighter 4 and mvc3 as the evidence of proof that everything went wrong with the design and visuals, especially sf4 one, get a capcom artbook and compare if you weren’t with the series from the beginnin, the only common thing about the characters left are clothes and names.
mvc3’s morrigan is YUCK, she looks just like some random morrigan cosplayer than morrigan herself.

    • Haohmaru HL

i know that feel bro, i hate all those “awesome 2d to crappy 3d conversions” each old series went through, it’s just cheaper and that’s why they do it :C

  • NTyron52

As far as I’d LOVE a new Darkstalkers game (I’d seriously love it), I don’t think the SFxT engine would be the right one to choose… other than the graphics and stuff, SFxT is not getting much love from everyone, I’d rather have them choose UMvC3’s engine than this, but what I really want to is for them to make Darkstalkers different than these 2 games combined (I still play UMvC3 a lot and it’s really fun to me, I just want Darkstalkers to be original that’s all).

I might work well with the SFxT engine though, because who knows? It would be excellent either way.

  • Haohmaru HL

god i hope it won’t go as casual as mvc2-to-mvc3 did. (don’t know what i’d do to the disc if i see something like stupid sfxt gems or their annoying glowing), sfxt engine? white backlight, white backlight everywhere!
also my wishes on 2d sprite darkstalkers has been crushed :C
