Nintendo 3DS XL To Have Better Anti-Glare Screen

By Ishaan . July 20, 2012 . 11:00am

In addition to the larger screen size and slightly greater battery life, the Nintendo 3DS XL has one other advantage over the Nintendo 3DS—a better anti-reflective screen.

Like previous Nintendo portables, the Nintendo 3DS uses an LCD screen. LCD screens have three reflective layers, and each one reflects and causes glare. In the case of the 3DS XL, each of these three layers was specially treated, reducing reflectivity from 12% on the Nintendo 3DS to 3% on the Nintendo 3DS XL. Finally, the screen cover pictured above covers the screen as a whole.

This was possible due to the progress of technology and a drop in manufacturing costs costs. Nintendo staff say that the cost of anti-reflectivity coats was too high to apply them in the past, but that the current manufacturing process and cost balance make them possible to use.

“Anti-reflection has been a topic every time since the Game Boy Advance system, but most of the time we had to give it up because of the cost,” Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, shared. Regardless, Nintendo kept an eye on the technology all along, hoping to use it when the costs worked out.

This is great but I still rather have it packaged with a charger. Not that I’m complaining, I’m gonna buy and enjoy the heck out of the 3DS XL.

    • HotDunk

      Only Japan’s won’t ship with a charger.

      • 2Chep

Europe too, but I bought one off ebay for VERY cheap and can’t wait to own it this time next week :D.

      • MrRobbyM

        You learn something new everyday.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It is only 5-10 dollar though?

Edit: Lol in Play Asia, they sell one for 0.01$ too lololol.

      • MrRobbyM

        Exactly ._. Just include it.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

But it will increase the consoles price? Okay for you?T_T

          • MrRobbyM

What, by 5 or 10 dollars? Yeah sure.

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

If we follow the cost of manufacturing here, it will be much higher there as Nintendo will need to produce a lot of the charger and prepare themselves if some of the consoles would not sells there.

So it will cost maybe 20-30+ i think. However, if you just buy them by yourself, or you already own DSi before, it would be much cheaper here.

Anyway where do you stay anyway? U.S do get the charger here you know? only E.U and Japan here.

          • MrRobbyM

@theworldofnoboundries:disqus  US actually! I know that now, but if I was given the choice and for the right price, I’d rather had the charger. Just me!

  • WyattEpp

Woah, this has my attention like crazy.  That actually tips me firmly in the camp of the XL version.  If you’ve ever compared glasses with and without anti-reflective coating, you know how big a deal this actually is.

  • SolidusSnake

Cool, I’ll definitely be getting this. Sounds like it’ll be quite a bit easier on the eyes than the regular 3DS.

  • James Smith

Been thinking about buying one, eventually.
But would much prefer one with a glossy screen instead.

Anti Glare trades image quality for reduced reflection that’s only useful when there’s a lot of light, like outside. Where I wouldn’t be playing it anyway. But I doubt Nintendo would release some premium glossy screen version unless it’s some XL-lite2 in a year with even bigger and better screen, man I’d get that one right away. But Anti Glare will help those that do carry their portable games outside, I think the standard 3DS would benefit a lot of that too since it’s smaller and more likely to be bought by those interested in the portability. It could use the battery upgrade too.

    • Suicunesol

Honestly, I think glare is annoying inside and outside. I get glare in my room all the time. Where did you hear that anti-glare reduces image quality?

      • James Smith

        It’s just something it does.
Kinda like a collateral effect of those filters between the image and your eyes. The effect depends on the quality of the anti glare but they all get slightly in the way of image quality.

    • James Beatty

You would prefer a glossy screen?
      …wut?

Nintendo 3DS: XL – Making me regret my import one announcement at a time.

    • Aoshi00

I got my Jpn 3DS at around $370 before shortly after it was released, and now a 3DS XL is only like $330.. w/ so many advantages to boot *.*…  the more I hear the more I want to upgrade, but would hold out for some limited edition maybe..  and even so, I would probably upgrade my US one only for $200…

Would be cool if I could trade in my Jpn 3DS like you said.. but then I would lose the 10 ambassador games before doing the transfer, not that they’re that big a deal..

I tried one out at a local store today, it blew me away. The stretching in resolution is not noticeable, the shoulder buttons are so damn comfy and the Start/Select/Home buttons now feel substantial. I did notice some anti-glare with the screen but I didn’t know what to call it at the time.

  • Showmeyomoves

Slicker design, matte finish, stylus on the right side, clicky START/HOME/SELECT buttons, longer battery life, less reflective screen… This 3DS XL is turning out to be everything I wanted for a 3DS re-design. Now if only they’d bring this out as a regular sized upgrade. My guess is not before Spring 2013, though.

  • Shadowman

I’m getting one. Don’t judge me.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lol why should someone judge you for you using your money there lol.^^

Just use your money as you like there lol.^^

      • Shadowman

        Just saying.

  • http://www.twitter.com/rothsothy Roth Sothy

3DS XL to use polarized layer confirmed! (just speculating, hehe) ..similar to ClearBlack Display by Nokia :D/

  • http://wwwdonicwebstartscom.webstarts.com/ donicx

    That’s cool to know.

  • LittleMofreaky

Yes! Now my 3DS screen won’t look shitty when I play it outside.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Uukh this makes me looks stupid here.T_T After owning 2 3DS here, i can’t really hope to get this one anymore.T_T

And this one looks better and better with each news.T_T

    • Aoshi00

Same here, got the stupid Jpn Aqua 3DS and US Zelda one.. sigh.. if I only have a system for one region, I would get this 3DS XL for the other region now.. now both are small :(..

The redesign just looks and sounds much better than the original, I always prefer matte finish to avoid fingerprints and giving a better grip.. I think I would wait for a limited edition to upgrade, or wait for bundle deals to upgrade my US system maybe.. that way if 3DSi XL ever comes out, I will not regret having a LE.. well, I kinda regret getting my 2 3DSes, but at least one of the was the Zelda one *.*

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well i don’t have anyway to trade anymore here as mine for Japan is SD gundam special edition and aqua blue for U.S one here.

I am thinking of giving my little sister my normal U.S version here however, it means that i will need to spend more money to buy 3DS XL again here.T_T While i have been saving money for Vita here.T_T

        • Aoshi00

I see.. too bad you’re not in the US right?  Otherwise you could trade in your US Aqua to Amazon for $100 now (black & red they’re taking for $88).. Actually I got a plain black US one originally, then I traded in to Amazon for about $120 and got the Zelda one..  Originally I was going to give my black US 3DS to my sis too, but she doesn’t play video games nowadays lol..

At least you have a sexy red Char Jpn system that is 3 times faster, my most expensive portable is a plain Jpn Aqua and I have no way of trading that in either :(…

I hope you get deals on Vita.. right now many retail stores and Amazon are giving $50 off (or store credit) for getting one.. I still haven’t played Uncharted Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush yet, waiting for Time Travelers :), for some reason I haven’t touched my Vita much.. more 3DS games I want to play.

Well.. one day the 3DS XL will be mine, a limited edition themed one would do.. now just saddened by every article that mentions the XL advantage *.*…

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yeah.T_T I stayed quite far from U.S…….. nope very far is better word here lol.T_T

But well, yeah at least i spend a crazy amount of money for my 3times faster 3DS there.^^

But with this, i will probably just wait till XL get their own limited edition here and i will purchase that one there.^^ (3DS XL Monhun Special Edition?^^ I can dream can’t it?^^)

  • http://dyiele.wordpress.com/ Penguins Can Fly

not gonna get one until they actually put a second analog to it AND a limited edition of any whatever game (please not zelda though or i’ll be forced to get one >_>)

    • James Beatty

You mean you are never going to get one? :( The system is pretty cool, and if you really want a more console like experience on your handheld you can just get the circle pad pro. It’s not very expensive, but very few games support it. Nintendo already said that they don’t want to put the circle pad pro built in to the system

      • http://dyiele.wordpress.com/ Penguins Can Fly

unless the above i stated is satisfied, i won’t. CCPXL? omg sorry but i travel light :(

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

You have to understand, right now the 2nd circle pad isn’t required yet and isn’t even available in every store just Gamestop (in the US).

I’m sure they may do it for the 3rd model…

  • yalissa

Regretting my decision to get a 3DS so soon… As always… Just like with the original DS. BUT ANTI-GLARE SCREEN? REALLY? *gross sobbing*
    But it’s so much money ; v ;
