The PlayStation 3 Assassin Game That Was Cancelled In Favour Of Heavenly Sword

By Ishaan . August 21, 2012 . 12:42pm

Sony Computer Entertainment Cambridge have yet another cancelled game in the closet that looks interesting in concept—a Kill Bill-style assassin game starring a female lead who would focus on disguises. The game was tentatively titled Zodiac Assassin, and would be set in locales such as Mexico, Turkey and Japan.

Various costume design concepts for the game’s lead character.

A painting of a crowd scene in Mexico during the “Day of the Dead” festival.

A drawing of a crowd scene that would have served as part of graphical demo.

An illustration of a fish market scene set in Tokyo.

Villains concepts. Each country/locale would have had its own signature boss.

A combination of painting + geometry used as art direction for a lighting test.

Zodiac Assassin was being conceptualized for the PlayStation 3 in 2005. The game was cancelled as Sony decided to invest instead in Ninja Theory’s Heavenly Sword.

SCE Cambridge worked on other concepts that didn’t make it to production, too: an alien monkey game (no, seriously) that led to the conception of Eyepet and a survival horror game titled Manhattan.

    That… looks terrible.

    Bloody Awful.
     Heavenly Sword turned out better

I think Sony made the right choice.

Reminds me of Wet. This doesn’t look good and Heavenly Sword didn’t turn out that great either. Lose/Lose situation.

I was thinking the same thing. I think maybe it’s the warehouse pic looks alot like wet.

Heavenly Sword was one of the funnest games during that time period for me, even if it had a lot of flaws.  Also the character acting was mostly really well done.

I’m not sure what exactly people find so awful about this. I mean, it’s not anything special, but it seems like a better concept than Heavenly Sword to me.

It still wouldn’t have done the PS3 any favours, though.

I don’t get it either considering its all concept art, but then again we’re talking about a launch window game and even HS didn’t turn out to be all that.

This is a nice consideration to what might have beens and what ifs, but that’s it.

Mind you I’m still pining away for Killing Day.

  • Darkrise

I don’t know, looks like an alright concept but design is pretty bad. Didn’t care for Heavenly sword either, tried playing it for an hour since i felt like playing something, it was very bland imo.

  • dragoon_slayer12

i would have preferred this instead

It’s always sad to know about cool games that we will never play because they make another. Why can’t we have both?

(yes, i know why, it’s a rhetoric question)

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Nice concept. We could some more globe-trotting action-adventure games. Too bad it got shot down for Heavenly Sword, though HS was a decent game in its own right.

Yeah…….. Thank the heavens they made Heavenly Sword! ^_^

  • konsama

I always find funny the only thing they know of Mexico are cartels and Day of the Dead.

The idea seemed interesting, but yeah by the locations i’d say it was more than Kill Bill in spirit. xD

  • puchinri

Well, then. That sucks. That looked like a fun concept and could have been pretty cool. Maybe it’ll see the light of day again, somehow?

That looks more colorful than Heavenly Sword thats for sure.

Nice concept, not too nicely drawn

It is sad to see these I for one want to see more games from Sony Cambridge not less. I wish & hope in the future we will get that chance. I like the art style of Revolution. I also would have liked to try Manhattan. I enjoyed Ghosthunter even with its flaws. So it would have been cool to give that game a try. It would have been nice to try Zodiac Assassin too.

People may or may not like the style or look of the game. But at the end of the day because no game play was shown just concepts you can’t say the game would have been great or not.

So even though they look good or not it does not matter because no game was shown.

I just hope in the future more games will come out from them.

  • Jack Frazee

Sounds like a pretty cool concept, and likely would’ve been much better than super clunky Heavenly Sword. That game wasn’t even playable if you’d played God of War before. :<
