Hyperdimension Neptunia Anime In The Works

By Spencer . August 28, 2012 . 2:30am

neptaCompile Heart is expanding the Neptunia franchise with an anime series. Dengeki PlayStation made the announcement, but haven’t said which studio is handling the animation.

Neptunia V, the latest entry in the video game series, comes out on August 30 for PlayStation 3.

Interesting will check it out someday…

  • My mind simply cannot fathom this move. The only saving grace(s) that I can think of are the character designs and high end voice actors. What can they possibly do with an anime? They better hire the Idolmaster anime’s director to save it.

    • malek86

Chances are, they don’t even realy want to do anything with it, just push it out of the door. It will probably just end up like any other RPG anime adaption.

Though iMas was surprisingly good, but I guess Namco’s financial backing helped.

      • If compa/IF have money to throw to KyoAni, then maybe it can be saved. Maybe. Probably it’ll be a slice of life show. Too many probabilities to consider.

        • landlock

I predict it’ll be animated by Xebec.

        • malek86

That’s not happening, so I guess it can’t be saved.

          • PoweredByHentai

No, they can let Studio Shaft and director Shinbo handle it.  That would easily sell.

          • Dunno will I want to see them bend their neck to a impossible angle (=><=;)

But when comes to background, I like those super modern (is it the right term???) buildings.

  • Ohoho this could be fun.

  • Muffum

Really, the game’s plot is far too “game”y for any sort of adaptation, if that makes sense. Large parts of the plot are artificial padding which just wouldn’t fly in an adaptation. They could make it a “cute girls doing cute things” type show with no real plot, but I’m of the opinion we really don’t need any more of those.

I’d get a kick out of it if they ended up going into mk2 material and adapting the Conquest End, though.

    • DesmaX

While I’d much rather if they didn’t put a “Conquest Ending” on it (I’m still trying to forget that), I do think the anime is going to need some darker moments.

Not only because it would make it worth watching (of couse), but also because Compile Hearts can be pretty dark when they want. I mean, I’m playing Agarest 2 nowadays, and it is a pretty dark game (I mean, even the marriages are kinda sad on it).

Sure, they are totally different games… But that mk2 ending did show me that the series can have darker stories.

  • Can’t wait for the scene of the psvita goddess sitting on a swing and just staring at the ground and that’s all we ever see of her

  • cedx123

This is just way too awesome so excited for this!

  • hunterrnl

Why do i have a feeling that the Anime will have alot off bouncing ?

  • Neptunia getting an anime??? Why am I not surprised….

Oh wait… It already has a manga adaptation…

    • Its set after the 1st game lol. Not an ‘adaptation” more of a spin-off/sequel

  • Herok♞

My only question is will the story be original or just the plot of one of the games.

  • Darkrise

Please don’t let it be focused on fanservice only.

    • SolidusSnake

…what else is their to focus on in a Neptunia adaptation?

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Neptunia isn’t about fanservice. Or at least, in-your-face fanservice. It’s about comedy.

        • Uh… It’s both. Forgot about all the fetishes within the art and dialogue?

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

You’re reading too much into things. It doesn’t focus on fanserice at all. Compare it to, say, Criminal Girls. That game was pure fanservice, although a pretty good game. Neptunia isn’t focused on it. Sure, in the first game you have that one CG in the beginning, but thats about as fanservicey as the game gets besides Green Heart’s outfit. Second game had a little bit more but nothing behind the occasional CG and outfits. V, however, might change things.

          • …If you’re saying that Green Heart’s design is the only thing that counts as fanservice, then your definition of “fanservice” is way too high. It’s not that I’m reading too much into things; THIS is how IF/CH fancies the game’s art as – even if we’re to ignore the dialogue momentarily.

        • Yeah, let’s see… there are sexualized moe mascots representing game consoles and companies, sexual innuendo galore, suggestive dialogue and art, and so on… all to appeal to the fetishes of your average, everyday otaku gamer.

Sure sounds in-your-face to me, bro.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Its going to end up like Majikoi

      • Daniel Morandi

But majikoi VN is far superior to use in a comparative sentence with Neptunia. Just saying.

        • Luna Kazemaru

the anime not the VN and its not THAT superior at all lol Its good but nothing that great.

          • Daniel Morandi

Compared with Neptunia it is. Besides Neptunia doesn’t have a good sense of humor, most of their jokes aren’t funny if you compare with others games and that should be its strong point.

          • Luna Kazemaru

I have to disagree with that.

    • Fire.fire.kun

Nothing wrong with fanservice since the story pokes fun of the game industry, so it’s bound to be loaded with fanservice around it. But what I want is  it to be focus on action and gags..and maybe a plot? Although, I’m really trying not to expect too much.

    • SupaPhly

but the whole game is just fanservice anyway :P

      • Luna Kazemaru

Yes ignore the comedy and ignore the loopy story.

        • As far as the first game goes, there wasn’t much of a “story”; it has a premise and a goal, but most of the in-between stuff is just random skits.

          • Luna Kazemaru

I’m not going by the first one I am aware there is fan service in the game. I am aware that there is alot of randomness added to the game and I am aware that the first game was not THAT great to begin with and nothing more then a premise for mk2 and V. You still can not ignore that the game was made with more then fan service alone in mind.

          • I know that. Whether those other aspects are actually substantial/significant, we’ll see once the Anime comes out – considering it’ll be exposed to a bigger audience, and not just people willing to spend money on the game.

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Based on the premise of the game…and making an anime off it, it would be in their best interest to litter it with fanservice, or else it will have difficulty selling any sort of units.

  • kiacan

and.. I just got the final ending for mk2 after all these months. I am glad it’s getting an anime and I would love it if like Muffum said it is based off of Mk2 and it goes based off of Conquest end that would be really something. I just hope it isn’t solely on fanservice, if anything it’s kept to a minimal.

  • AndyFe

This will be interesting to see,I always thought they could make an anime out of this.I wonder what story line are they going to take on or are they going for an original one. yea I kinda hope for fan service to be minimal.

  • I suppose this was inevitable. The animation adaptation might make the humour shine through a bit better than in the games.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Bet its anime sales will be on the level of Shining Hearts Bread of Happiness or lower…Guess Ill watch it whatever season it comes doubt it will get released in the west.

    • LynxAmali

Nothing will be as bad as Shining Bread.

(I’m in denial. I was so looking forward to that.)

      • Daniel Morandi

Me too but now I think that even Shining Wind was far better. I knew that Shining Hearts didn’t have a good plot but the anime changed everything even the littel story that the game had.

Im not going to look forward to a possible Shining Blade animation after this.

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

I loved Shining Bread. The backgrounds were nice, the OP and ED were catchy (especially the ED), and Rikku was so cool, and his sword and bread.

    • I think we can count on NISA to bring the anime over.

      • Fire.fire.kun

If that’s the case, they better dub it!

  • Zoozbuh

Yaaay, I <3 Neptunia… As long as they don't ruin it… which they probably will :T Although I only slogged through the first 2 games for the story/characters, so this kinda makes sense…

  • AnimeRemix

    Neptunia anime?!

This is going to be Good!, Great!, Awesome!, Outstanding!, AMAZING! =D
    Really excited here. :V

  • noegusis

A-1 pictures would be decent at least.

    • XYZ_JolteonZ980

no, they need to spend their time on more SAO! (Magi and Fairy Tail and BLue Exorcist) and not touch this.

      • Luna Kazemaru

Yes because its hard to work on more then one anime lol and blue exorcist is done.

        • XYZ_JolteonZ980

Id rather they spend more on that than picking up yet another anime to the six they are already doing and another they just announced yesterday or today. Plus they could anime the last two arcs to BLue Exorcist since both just concluded…

    • Daniel Morandi

Im the only one who is no pleased with A-1? sure they have a good animation quality with SAO (I love that anime) but the character design…I don’t know, I see samefaces all over again. There will be another anime from A-1 pictures, called Maoyuu  Maou Yuusha and the mc looks like Kirito xD

  • Arrei

    Brb, barfing rainbows and sunshine.

  • XypherCode

Now I have Senran Kagura ang this to look forward to :))

  • Nee Nee

    Me likey.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Oh god its happening!!!

  • Not sure what to think about this… but studio doesn’t matter, since if you look at the credits for most shows nowadays, they all have a hand in production.

Like JC Staff being credited for character animation and special effects in Accel World, Production IG in Sword Art Online, KyoAni was listed in Shana III’s credits and so on.

Just so long as long as it isn’t DEEN it should be relatively “good”.

    • PoweredByHentai

Is DEEN the one that keeps outsourcing to that horrendous Korean animation studio?

      • Luna Kazemaru

DEEN is the one that ruined F/SN

        • DEEEEEEEEEN!!!! *shakes fist in air*

        • PoweredByHentai

Ruined F/SN in what way?  Animation or script?

Because the script had its incredibly silly moments.

          • Luna Kazemaru

in Animation and the fact they tried to smash all 3 arcs into one.

          • PoweredByHentai

They alluded to the other arcs but it was strictly Fate arc.

          • Daniel Morandi

…and they rushed the UBW arc with that movie. The animation was better yes but compared with Ufotable quality, there is a huge diference.

          • You only had problems with the script? Wow…

          • PoweredByHentai

You could only come to that opinion from everything I’ve said?  Wow…

          • You’ve only commented on the script. It was just a passing response. Sounds like you’re a bit hurt, which is understandable, so I’ll just leave it there for now.

    • herolove

If you disregard F/SN I think deen done some good stuff, like higurashi

  • Fire.fire.kun

  • DesmaX

If it’s focused more on the Console Wars than anything else, sign me in!

  • doubleO7

It should be noted that this won’t be a “series” per se. Since it will be coming out this Thursday alongside the game, its likely just a single episode OVA.

    • malek86

      Where does it say that?

    • Fire.fire.kun

It just says “green-lit” as reported here. Meaning, it hasn’t even been made yet…

At this point, anything is possible.

    • zazza345

That is referring to the simultaneous release of the magazine and the game (same day), not the anime.

      • doubleO7

It seems I misinterpreted something. I thought the magazine had announced that the anime would be shipping Thursday alongside the game, but you’re right, its really just the magazine containing the announcement that will be shipping on Thursday.

        Sorry about the confusion.

  • Aww yeah.

    Just let XEBEC handle it.

  • For people saying that this should not be focused on fan service only..
    Are the games anything else?

Okok, i only played the first one, but the gameplay was close to unplayable and rusty, the dialogue graphics was the only good part.

    • Arrei

The second game was actually decent on gameplay. No more random encounters and combat was pretty fun. Really could have used more consistent (or just more, period) dub work IMO, I rather like Neptune’s English voice.

I avoided the first game completely, but I gave the second game a shot and enjoyed it well enough.

  • Barrit

As long as the non-lead characters aren’t silhouettes!

Sorry, I had to poke fun at what they pulled in part 1 lol. This is good news to me. I’ve only played 1 so far, and this makes me want to hurry and get around to playing mk2 already.

    • Landale

Nah, no silhouettes. Just off screen, hair covering the face, or random obstructions I’m sure.

  • Pythia Brixham

    I am so happy.

  • Renzouri

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they got Kyoto Animation to handle the animation for this franchise. (Highly doubt it though)

Other than that, good news for all Neptunia fans~

    • zazza345

It’ll be either one of the studios that normally IF uses to animate Hakuoki or Tezuka Productions, since they recently made a partnership with CH.

    • That would be a miracle of miracles, my friend.

  • My mind just imploded from all the awesomesauce! >_<

  • Godman

Words cannot express how excited I am for this.

I always knew this series would get an anime; The gameplay may be mediocre, but it makes it up with lovely characters and funny story :P

  • Wonder if it will just be nothing or have a plot. Guess we will have to see.

  • Hoshi星

I want Shaft to animate this…Okay maybe not.

    • Kai2591

lol maybe not…their style works with some series but maybe not for something like this…probably

      • WyattEpp

They managed Vampire Bund and Monogatari just fine, and they’ve been doing in-betweening for years– they could stick to the model easily.  Probably not them, though: they already have Kizu and Sasami-san to work on.

  • Kai2591

    lol unexpected but awesome~
They might even become top contenders in the Saimoe tournaments lol.

  • MrKappa

Don’t know how anyone couldn’t of expected this.
If Senran Kagura got one this sure enough would of.

  • Ray Barksdale

YES!!! Hopefully it looks good and gets dubbed. I will flip!!! Even if it doesnt im still watching!

  • PK212

As long as they can release dubbed version with the same actors (at least with Melissa Fahn) I’ll be happy :)

    • Ray Barksdale

Yeah!! I need my Melissa Fahn Nep! xD

  • brian yep

I think ufotable is gonna do it.

  • RadShiro

Since it’s anime now, they should make “moe-fications” of all the big anime studio’s or big anime series archetypes.

The ideas are endless I tellz ya!

  • Kitestwinblades

    Wow, Neptunia is taking names.
Feels like the first game was just here yesterday lol
This could be EXTREMELY big if they play their cards right.

This year is just one big Neptunia and Persona 4 explosion XD
The Atelier games are on a release roll too.

  • This could be really big if they do it right. :)

  • wat_wat

  • cody Allen

would love to see shaft animate this lol
