Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Is The Next Major Metal Gear Game [Update]

By Ishaan . August 30, 2012 . 12:15am

Konami announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes as the next Metal Gear Solid title at their Metal Gear 25th anniversary party today.

According to reports from attendees, Konami showed a brief demo of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The game will allegedly be an open-world title that runs on Kojima Productions’ FOX Engine. Snippets of footage showed Snake avoiding searchlights, riding a jeep, and calling a helicopter in for evacuation.

Note that just how much of the footage shown was playable is unknown. Konami also released a piece of art from the game (above) via Famitsu.com.

  • Paradox me

An open world Metal Gear, eh? That could be pretty neat, depending on the setting. Can’t wait to hear more.

  • xAKUM3TSUx

OPEN WORLD METAL GEAR?! My wallet is foaming!!!

  • DanteJones

Open world, huh? I wonder if they’ll have something similar to the Outer Ops missions in Peace Walker, except you’ll have the option to play as one of the soldiers you choose to deploy. Depends on when this is exactly in the timeline, though. :V

  • https://twitter.com/Panda_castro Panda

Is not MGS5 but I”ll take it !!!

  • Tales_of_Master

Hah, speak of the devil. I was just saying how neat it would be to get news on a new MGS game, and here it is. I’m not sure how I feel about the “Open World” thing, but if it’s MGS, I’ll take it :D

  • doemaaan

well that sounds awesome. AND it’ll be on the FOX engine!

  • GreekGod88

    new must have

  • KnightBlazer

That picture made me double take. (I thought I was looking at a movie still)

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Ground Zeroes??? For a second there, I though it was a MGS game starring Major Zero…

What I’m hearing from this sounds so exciting… I have faith in Kojima that he will surprise me…

Edit: *looks at picture*… Sam Fisher??? Is that you???

  • Code

    Ohh very curious to see more, looks really sharp, although curious just what Fox Engine is running on o3o; Although haven’t seen any footage, looking like this takes place after Peace Walker, as that’s Big Boss owo;

Speculating that this might cover Big Boss and Zero’s confrontation and follow up/fill in the events between Peace Walker and Metal Gear o3o; Also notice he isn’t wearing a headband, which might signify his changing stance on The Boss’s death versus Zero’s stance, as well beginning to transition to his lack of headband in Metal Gear onward.

  • noctis_nox

    Sam! Sam! SAAAAAAAAM!!!!!

  • konsama

The FOX engine looks beautiful, i can trust kojima on this game. Right now there’s not much room to more story on MGS, so i hope you can really pull it, can’t wait for the trailer to be uploaded for us to watch.

  • personablaze

Metal Gear!!….Gotta use my codec to get in touch with my wallet….But I dont know the number:p
All jokes aside even though this is just one pic…I screamed like a girl when I saw snake…He looks so…Epic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003292245169 Richard Jared Barnes

Apparently Kojima does have to make only Metal Gear.  Move on Kojima.

    • sandra10

Tell Konami to let him and I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to.

    • Utku Savaş

Why the people like you won’t explode anyway. Shut up already, the whole “Kojima doesn’t have to make Metal Gear anymore” is stupidity at its finest. Move on please.

  • Nicolas Vasquez

well they used a similar outfit in the teaser trailer of MGS4, but that time its was quite clear it was a parody of sam fisher, so at the very least they are aware of it, anyway i expect something at TGS.

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

“Open-world” huh? This could turn out to be pretty good.

  • MrKappa

Metal Gear is forever huh? How many times can we keep going back to this, really now.
An open world MGS does sound really interesting though. Can’t wait to see some footage.

  • z_merquise

Is it confirmed if this is the Project Ogre they were teasing before or is it still a new IP?

But either way, I’m excited to see more of this.

  • Go2hell66

open world MGS? i can not even imagine how this is gonna work but i shall remain optimistic or at least i’ll try :)

    • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

I assume it’ll be like MGS3, only with way bigger and/or more open-ended levels. If you want a taste of what a game like that might be like, I’d suggest trying out the games Far Cry and Crysis.

  • Colonel Custard

Man ground zero has got a lot to live up to considering that Peace Walker was pretty much the longest Metal Gear Solid game ever made, and Gun of the Patriots being the best. Can’t wait to see more.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alex.kang.16 Alex Kang

    Witch snake is it

    • Hraesvelgr

      No, it’s Wizard Snake.

      • Utku Savaş

        Hahaha… I laughed so hard.

      • LynxAmali

        MY SIDES!

        AHAHAHA!

    • Nemesis_Dawn

      Pretty obviously Big Boss.

  • badmoogle

The open world aspect really picked my interest.

    • hadjimurad

likewise! *lame grammar/vocabulary correction follows* and i believe it is “piqued my interest” although it would be cool if FOX engine was so advanced it actually “picked” your interest! you never know with Kojima!

    • MrRobbyM

Same. I think it’s about time. MGS has always felt somewhat restricting due to it’s linearity but the story and gameplay make up for it so it was never a problem but if they can balance all of what makes a great MGS game in an open world environment, which I believe they can, then we got a damn good game coming.

  • Nitraion

    I wanted to see it moar…… :3

  • Domii

I gotta hear more from this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Ingram/100002032335254 Jonathan Ingram

Well, I guess War Really Has Changed.

And this time, it got a whole lot more interesting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pablo.j.rapetti Pablo Joaquin Rapetti

Call me believer, but Metal Gear Solid 3 is my favorite MGS by far. So another console adventure for Big Boss… my plans to sell my ps3 are officially cancelled.

    • Sumo Attuquayefio

Why on Earth would you sell your PS3? The new IP alone is worth owning it.

      • http://twitter.com/SameerMonier Sameer Monier

He got it all wrong, he got confused and probably is talking about The Last Guardian

        • http://www.facebook.com/pablo.j.rapetti Pablo Joaquin Rapetti

Exactly, thanks a lot. When I read Uncharted in a comment I saw that. I was referring to the one developed by the guys of colossus.

    • http://twitter.com/SameerMonier Sameer Monier

how dare you think to sell your PS3 ?!, did you by any chance forget The Last of Us ?!, maybe Two Souls ?!, probably Syphone Filter 3 in the future too

      grrrrrrrrrr

      • http://www.facebook.com/pablo.j.rapetti Pablo Joaquin Rapetti

The day “The Last of Us” sees the light of day I will summon Kratos to make me his bitch.

        • Sumo Attuquayefio

What makes you think it won’t see the day of light? It’s not like were talking about Killer Instinct 3. Or fun Kinect games.

          • http://www.facebook.com/pablo.j.rapetti Pablo Joaquin Rapetti

Well, if Duke Nukem Forever did see the light of day, I think everything is possible. BTW eternal development cycle for an undeveloped game.

          • Sumo Attuquayefio

But they’ve shown more of The Last Of Us than anything shown of Duke Nukem. Naughty Dog isn’t known for delays. Or under delivering.

          • Mark Fate

The game was literally announced half a year or so ago? If anything, this game will probably be out in about a year and that’s quick from first announcement…

        • http://twitter.com/SameerMonier Sameer Monier

Aren’t you talking about The Last Guardian ?! :D

          • Mark Fate

Yeah, The Last Guardian and FF Versus XIII make a lot more sense than The Last of Us..

        • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Wait, you’d summon Kratos so that you’d be his bitch? What kind of backwards summoning ritual is that?

          • http://www.facebook.com/pablo.j.rapetti Pablo Joaquin Rapetti

A very sick and disturbing one, thats for sure

      • Solomon_Kano

Syphon Filter 3 has been out for years generations.

  • Anime10121

    Looks at pic…

    Open world MGS…

    Running on Fox Engine…

=Me foaming at the mouth!  Man this sounds amazing so far, and with me being the avid MGS fan that I am, cant say I’m not psyched for this.  I just wish they’d released a little more info, like maybe platforms (sure it’s probably multiplatform PS360 and maybe WiiU), a teaser, story details etc. The one thing that I hope though is with this being open world, that it doesnt hinder the story at all.  I still want my cutscene filled Metal Gear, maybe not as many as 4, but at least as much as 2 and 3.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hector-Cortes/100000351183370 Hector Cortes

I doubt it’ll be 360/PS3 (Wii U is possible) as this game probably won’t be out for another 2 years knowing Kojima so it’ll probably be a next gen game.

      • Anime10121

Well, by the looks of things, the next gen consoles wont be out for another 2 years too, unless they are unveiled at TGS in a couple weeks.  Next gen systems have NEVER been released the same year they have been announced (well save for the Sega Saturn, and we all know how that turned out), even the handhelds have been released a year after their official announcement.  It gives them time to build up marketing materials and get everyone hyped for their product.  Its the same reason most games are announced at least 9 months before release, they need time to get people informed/hyped.

And even if they (the next gen systems) do release next year, that wont stop games like this from coming out considering 360 came out 2005 and 2006 saw the release of KHII, God of War II, FFXII, Okami, Tales of Legendia, and Tales of the Abyss, among others.  Thankfully, when next gen hits, it doesn’t mean the synchronous death of the current gen software.

They already said this game was built on PC, with specs that could be done on current gen, and with Kojima recently saying that Fox Engine was nearly complete, but they wouldnt call it complete until a game was released using it, I have a feeling that this might be a late 2013 early 2014 release, and if so, is VERY doable for current gen release.  But either way whatever system it ends up releasing on, I will purchase it, I did the same thing for Kingdom Hearts 3D being my sole reason (at the time) for purchasing a 3DS, and this game will do the same for whatever it releases on :)

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

      @Anime10121:disqus @facebook-100000351183370:disqus @Nemesis_Dawn:disqus
Famitsu say the game is targeted at the current gen of platforms.

      • Anime10121

         And thank GOD for that:)

Even though I’m sure to purchase at least 2 of the next gen systems (WiiU and probably the next Playstation depending on whether or not Sony keeps free online and their studios keep belting out software), I’m in no rush to make the leap considering there is so much still coming for current gen consoles!

Made that mistake purchasing my PS3 early (although at the time my old 360 was giving me plenty of good use with ToV, BD, and LO), and my 3DS early, (expecting Legends 3 prototype in a couple months and mainly for KH3D), do NOT wanna make the mistake of buying into next gen without having proper software released again!

  • SirRichard

Open world with FOX Engine visuals, Kojima doesn’t push his team by half, does he? Seriously can’t wait for this, here’s hoping it’s up to the standards of MGS3.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Being they showed it on a PC, instead of a console, I can’t help but think this will be a PC/PS4 title.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Apparently it was running on a PC with “specs equivalent to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360″. So it could still be this current gen, as well as the next gen if they were going that route.

      • Nemesis_Dawn

Weird. I’ve read in a couple places it was a high-end PC, which would put it way above what the PS3 and 360 can do. Keep in mind, that when they originally showed of MGS4, they showed that too, on a high-end PC at the time, even though it had been announced as a PS3 title.

I just don’t see the 360 being able to pull off those graphics and I’m not even sure the PS3 wouldn’t have some problems with them.

  • Luna Kazemaru

I love MGS so this got me hyped abit.

  • KingGunblader

So now I’m immediately wondering how this going to fit into the ridiculous storyline of this series. Does this fit in pre- or post-MGS4? Is this a new Snake? Questions, questions. Hopefully they show more of this at TGS.

  • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

Just wanted to point out that famitu refers to it as Ground Zeroes :P

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Sigh. They must have updated while I was asleep. It was Ground Zero before. Go figure. Thanks, I’ll make the change.

      • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

I guess there are conflicting reports, not really your mistake, Ish. Sal (Gematsu) said he read both versions online but he went with the more widely spread one. As it’s a Kojima game “Zeroes” sounds way more likely, if you ask me.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

That’s funny, I thought the exact same thing, hahaha. “Ground Zeroes” sounds more Engrishy and KojiPro-esque, so that’s what I went with initially.

Then, Famitsu put their own report up, and I was like, “Wait, wait. Famitsu is writing in better English than we are? This will not do!”

          • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

“Wait, wait. Famitsu is writing in better English than we are? This will not do!”
That line made my day, thanks Ish.

  • thaKingRocka

Open world play is the last thing I want in Metal Gear. Well, maybe it’s the next to last. I hope that someone at Konami has the guts to edit Kojima’s script. MGS could be great again. It just needs some reasonable, focused people to rein in Kojima’s overreaching ambitions and verbal diarrhea. We need his vision and his delusion, and we need frequent reality checks and honest opinions to make them work.

    • Domii

      “MGS could be great again”

Wait, when did MGS ever go bad in the first place?

      • thaKingRocka

After the tanker scene in 2, it fell apart. The GAME remained great while the story and presentation fell apart and the characterization suffered. The whole storyline jumped the shark in 2. Then, it seemed to come together well for 3 (except for the usual excessive exposition). It fell apart again with pretty much the entirety of 4, which was a painful mess of boredom and exposition set over a glaring dearth of GAME.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Robosham Ronnie Celeski

So really you only liked the first game?

The fact that you could even say that 3 didn’t handle exposition perfectly is insane.

Why are you complaining about them making the game open world if apparently every game since the first one was wrong?

          • thaKingRocka

Kojima’s writing is incredibly overly expository. He rarely allows us to simply enjoy or absorb the events transpiring. Instead, he does something that is interesting or impressive, and then proceeds to explain it in a very unnatural way. Whether it be a full-on history lesson or an obsessively nerdy analysis of the multiple customized components of an ally’s pistol, Kojima simply does not know when to stop. This was true in part three as well. MGS1 was the most to-the-point of the series even though it suffered the same problems to an extent.

I liked the first three games. I loved playing two … after I had beaten it and been thoroughly disappointed with the story and replacement of the lead character. Shaking down enemies for dog tags was incredibly fun. As the series went on, I felt less like I was playing a game, and more like I was nodding off to an audio-book. Four is the only one I felt that I actively disliked even though I felt the series had jumped the shark in part two.

Two and three still allowed me to actually play. Four put in lengthy exposition at every single turn of the story. It’s insulting to the audience and it ruins the pacing of the game. Let us figure things out. Let us play. Allow us to intuit something, anything.

I loved “tactical espionage action.” It was fun. They seem to get further and further away from that though, and an open world does not hold a lot of promise for me for an enjoyable stealth-based “tactical espionage action” game. Like many complainants, I complain because I love it and I want it to be better.

        • Domii

I understand your criticism about 2, but 3 and 4? Boy you must be crazy. 3 and 4 are regarded as the best in the series by both critics and commercial success. I’ll even go as far as to say that MGS4 is one of my favorite games of all time. Then again though, it’s only our opinion after all.

          • thaKingRocka

In short, the digestible smaller bits of fun gameplay gave way to larger
bits of less enjoyable play and much lengthier cutscenes. I do not embrace cinematic storytelling in games. I embrace play in games. Part one struck a balance between these elements. Two struck an imbalance, and that imbalance has just gotten worse over time.

MGS also changed fundamentally from 2 to 3. I liked the core element of the radar with vision cones. That was key in my enjoyment of the game. The timing and movement was based on that information in 1 and 2. I also liked the smaller areas of 1 and 2, and I preferred the earlier camera. The move toward stealth being a camouflage function was just not as fun to me as the old hiding behind things. We went from playing hide and seek to managing inventory. As the series went on, I felt it drifted further and further from being a game to being a less and less interactive existential animated series with overwhelming self-seriousness tempered only by the occasional silly gag.

I picked up the HD collection so I could play Peace Walker. I look forward to playing it, but I imagine it will likely suffer the same problems as the other modern installments. Maybe I’ll simply skip every cutscene and hope the game will give me some direction and motivation without forcing me to sit passively while someone spouts off philosophy 101 ideas or firearm otaku treatises on the pros and cons of rare pistols.

  • lorelai4cuties

this is awesome news..its on xbox360,PS3 and PC i guess..it would be nice if they release it on wii u

  • http://stratege.ru/ Varyag Ericsson

About 20 minutes of cutscene and gameplay Kojima-san show to audience. :) I wonder, some guys says it’s Solid Snake on the art, but why with MSF badge on his shoulder? Or, maybe it’s Solidus? He’s oldest among the cloned Snakes, so theriotecally could catch MSF-time?

    • personablaze

      I think Its BigBoss

      • l777l

Yeah, the equipment looks very Peace Walker. Then there’s the beard. And the game’s concept is more in line with that, too. Plus, with rain is how Peace Walker started (Sons of Liberty did too, but I’m temporarily ignoring that).

        • personablaze

Plus if you look near his right eye you can see part of the eye patch strap.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

It is Big Boss. Other sites described the video. Once he takes those goggles off, he has the eyepatch and he has the MSF badge. People who saw the video said there were hints it takes place in Africa, which would be where the Outer Heaven uprising was.

  • l777l

Open world… I generally don’t like that. However, it seems like an expansion on the ideas of Peace Walker – and featuring Naked Snake/Big Boss. So that’s interesting.

  • Joshue Perez

I need this on the wii u plz Kojima-san!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Maybe a Solid Snake cameo as a kid? When Big Boss teaches him how to fight? That would be awesome

yeah…. MGS  is back , although free world roaming… nah i trust Mr Kojima will blow our mind in the full game….

  • Zeromus321

This is great to see, looks phenomenal.  Now if only I could hear some news on how the next Z.O.E game is coming. I can only imagine what Jehuty will look like with the FOX engine.

  • RupanIII

Open world is not usually my thing, but my interest is definitely piqued here. I’m hoping it’s a return to more MGS1-3 style stealth gameplay

  • Solomon_Kano

Holy fudging hell. Holy. Fudging. Hell.

An open-world Metal Gear. Open-world Metal Gear. Open-world Metal Gear. Soooooo hyped right now. I was just playing through MGS3 about a couple weeks ago, this is practically the greatest thing I never imagined. In all of the things I thought might be cool in a MGS game, I never pictured an open-world one. We can use vehicles in conjunction with the series usual sneaking, too? Excite!

  • Ben Sylvia

Open world MGS with Big Boss?

    Sounds interesting.

  • DCBlackbird

So what war will he be winning for some foreign country?

  • DCBlackbird

His goggles only have one lens……Wow

that pic is so sexy i can wait

  • Mazdian

Oooh, open world! Hopefully it’s not all urban setting though; one of my favorite things in MGS3 was just crawling around in the jungle, hunting and being sneaky, and that was with just big levels! Imagining an open world version of that = drooling. @.@
