From Bow To Twin Swords, Here Are Monster Hunter 4’s Twelve Weapons

By Ishaan . September 6, 2012 . 7:41pm

Earlier today, we put up screenshots of Monster Hunter 4’s new hunting insect weapon, dubbed the “Souchuukon,” which lets you send insects out to drain energy from enemies and provide you with buffs. Of course, in addition to this new weapon class, previous weapons from the series are in Monster Hunter 4 as well. Here’s a look at all the weapons revealed so far:

A weapon from ancient times that has the power to control insects. These "hunting insects" suck up extract from monsters and strengthen the user. This is a light weapon so it allows players to be very mobile.

Great Sword

A gigantic sword that’s like the tusk from a monster killed by a hunter. It’s a slow weapon, but when the blade slices a monster it will certainly kill it. The Great Sword can also be used to guard, which makes this an all rounder weapon.

Long Sword

In contrast to the Great Sword, this weapon is designed for fast and consecutive strikes. "Spirit" is accumulated after each strike which allows players to use a a spirit slash.

Sword and Shield

A versatile weapon that lets players do a whirlwind slash. This weapon’s strengths are fast and constant attacks with few breaks in between. While you’re unsheathing the sword you can also use items.

Twin Swords

Clad in demon garments, Dual Sword users wield two small swords in both hands that can rapidly strike enemies. There is a demon transformation mode that you can use to further power up your character.

Hammers deliver earth shattering blows that shake the soul. This weapon has the greatest offensive power out of all weapons. Hit a monster on its head and you can make it dizzy.

Hunting Horn

Be the maestro on the battlefield with the Hunting Horn. This weapon lets you play songs that change status effects. You can play a tune while you’re in the middle of attacking a monster so you can simultaneously be an attack and support character.

Armed with a gigantic shield and long lance, this weapon allows players to guard and counter attacks.

A powerful weapon that adds explosive shells to a solid lance. The Gunlance has a "full burst" attack that unloads all of the bullets in the weapon.

A lightweight and mobile gunner that can hit monsters from afar. Bowgunners have different rounds of ammunition, one type gives you rapid fire.

An agile weapon that lets players target weak points from a variety of differences.

Switch Axe

This weapon is a sword and an axe. Switch to axe mode to do powerful strikes or choose sword mode if you want more speed.

Monster Hunter 4 will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in Spring 2013.

Sounds like a nice diverse game to me.

  • kuroneko0509

I hope I can finish my Monster Hunter 3G which I just bought this week before this game is out :D

  • ronin4life

I wonder if the dynamic shadows have improved over 3g…
I also am left wondering how the long sword will differ/have evolved since tri.
    Gah, hurry up and come out!! >.<;;;;

Also, has the sword/shield always had a whirlwind attack? I don't remember one from freedom unite or tri/3g…

    • Exkaiser

It has not always had a whirlwind attack. New stuff!

  • I thought this was gonna get released late 2013 but if it’s Spring 2013 we might end up not getting 3G. ;_;

Anyways, I’m gonna be lazy and try to just learn Switch Axe this time around along with my mastery of GS/LS. MAYBE DS, I’d like to use the Bow but…I can’t be bothered to keep track of coatings.

    • Exkaiser

Bow doesn’t use bullets, it’s got infinite arrows. It uses coatings, which are much less complicated.

      •  I don’t know why the hell I said bullets…it’s a god damn arrow. But yea point is I don’t wanna keep track of that stuff on top of the rest of the inventory management in the game.

        • Exkaiser

And like I said, it’s much less trouble with the Bow than with bowguns. You only need to take an extra two items, really, and the extra space they take up is offset by the entire extra page of mission-only inventory space they’ve added recently.

  • Vyrus

Oh, geez… If this ever come out here, I assure you that there will be people using long swords and twin swords against thick-skinned monsters…

    • Exkaiser

Well, they do tend to have very good sharpness, so why not? It’s not the most optimal, but I tend to go for my LS when I need to cut down a Gravios, just because I know it won’t bounce.

    • Draparde

as long as the dual sword user doesn’t spam demonization (particularly a certain attack during that mode) and the long sword user gets that second form i don’t really see that as a problem.

and of course what Exkaiser stated.

      • Exkaiser

To be fair, the devil’s dance doesn’t ever bounce, so… Spamming it is actually not a bad idea- as long as you know when to use it.

        • Draparde

i had something else to say, but upon extra thought, it doesn’t much matter in this situation xD.

  • konsama

My beloved gunlance is back, that’s enough reason to get me to play this.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Bow and Bowgun FTW!!!^_^ Melee weapon is truly never my style lol.

    • Draparde

I love me some Bow’s too!~ i use them 98% of the time! the other 2% is gunlance, though dual swords are catching up with the new attacking pattern they got in Portable 3rd.

the new weapon does look kindof intresting though. i like light, quick weapons.

  • Akarnage

Nothing will ever top my trusty hammer. :)

  • Switch Axe Nation!

    • Rudy Soto

Switch Axe is always the best.

    • neocatzon

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

My mighty Lance/Gunlance is all I need

  • Spider-Man

The environments look a little, ehh. I’ll be maining the Great Sword/Gunlance as usual. If the game gets localized. <_<

On another note, the official site is up.

    • Exkaiser

Armor sets on the official site look niiiice.

  • Curan_Altea

Glad to see longsword is in this one. I love some greatsword, but I’m so much better with the longsword. But I do appreciate the variety. Will help to keep things fresh.

  • Asura

Were these backgrounds ripped from a N64 game?

    • GOLD

3ds games almost never look good in srenshots but yeah…i agree

  • Syn

Great Sword and Gunlance all the way baby, nothings beats the feeling of nailing a fully charged strike and watching those big beasties go down in awe of your badassery, or better yet, send one flying with a shot of Wyvern fire, new monsters, beware of the GS and GL.

  • Fitzkrieg

Dual Swords all the way. The buffs given to them in Portable 3rd make it my go-to weapon for all my hunting outings. Invincible quick-dashes, chained combos and the lingering Demonization mechanic. So goooood.

    • Punny Fuzz

Yeah you enjoy your little toothpicks while I command an army of insects like the goddamn Pain from MGS3. I mean, that’s how it works right? lol

      • Peace Legacy

but can you summon TOMMY GUN with the new insect MH4 weapon?
Until you can, I will stick to ls/gs/gl/ds, thank you

  • Go2hell66

greatsword and hammer is all i need, the weapons that actually do real damage :p

  • Katana, hammer, and bow bring on the game anytime XD

  • Captain_Jiruo

Some monster hunter suggestions are currently at the top of Capcoms suggestion box.
Everyone go vote to show support!

  • Z3

Longsword, Greatsword and Bowgun all the way

  • Kitestwinblades

Twin Sword. Practically a given lol
I would have preferred the Souchuukon to have blades on each end(reminds me a LOT of the swallow in Chrono Cross), but the idea is already interesting and they even consider it a light weapon. I’ll give this Naginata hybrid a shot XD

    • Exkaiser

There’ll probably be a model or two with two blades, just for looks.

And def a dual chainsaw weapon.

      • Kitestwinblades

Great, that would be good enough for me :3
Dual chainsaw sounds like a dream come true.

  • gquain

Bow and Hammer, just like in the old days.
    Day One Import

  • kazdamaz

I feel so niche-y. Am I the only one who loves Hunting Horns? lol

    • Kitestwinblades

I actually scrolled over the name by accident XD My mind was registering it as a hammer. I really like music classes in most games that offer it. I’d certainly give it a try.  Music in Monster Hunter… Definitely Intriguing :3

    • J_Joestar

I started in Tri where it wasn’t available, but i am definitely planning on giving them a go when 3U comes out in NA.

      • kazdamaz

Yeah give them a try, they’ve been improved since freedom unite so should be easier to use now. It was a little hard for less proficient players to get KOs in older games.

  • I would love to pick up a Long Sword again… but I feel EVERYONE uses it. Am I the only one?

    • 5parrowhawk

LS is a versatile and easy weapon to use – unlike a lot of weapons, it’s moderately effective against virtually every monster in the game (with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions). I think that’s why a lot of people like it. It’s certainly why I started out with the LS as well.
Since MHP3 came out, I’ve been maining Gunlance (the new moves are lots of fun), but I do switch back to LS once in awhile for monsters which are tough to gunlance effectively. That and HBG/LBG for a select few mobs.

      • Exkaiser

Similarly, since MHP3, I’ve been maining Switch Axe but switch back to LS once in a while.

Of course, SA is pretty much effective against everything the way LS is. Maybe even a little more versatile.

      • Yeah, I agree. That’s why I tend to play DS lately. Not much of a change when it comes to usage, but it’s still fun.

  • Hinataharem

More weapons to hit our comrades with! Er…I mean monsters!

  • J_Joestar

No mention of Charge Axe? or just not enough details on it yet?
