The Man Who Created Final Fantasy’s ATB Battle System Made An iOS Card Game

By Spencer . September 13, 2012 . 2:00pm

guarcHiroyuki Ito revolutionized Final Fantasy with the Active Time Battle system. Now, Ito is taking a stab at changing card battling games with Guardian Cross. Akira Oguro, character designer on Final Fantasy IV: The After Years and Final Fantasy: Dimensions, designed characters for Guardian Cross too. Final Fantasy XI composer Naoshi Mizuta made music for the game.

In Guardian Cross, players tame Guardians using a magic rifle. Then you can train Guardians and put them in a deck to battle other players. Guardian Cross has over 180 different Guardians in the game and some of them look a lot like their Final Fantasy equivalent.

Guardian Cross is available now as a free download for iOS devices.

Card battle + ATB? If he pulls this off it could be ground breaking.

Just downloaded. Hopefully this mixture of the ATB creator and a card game turns out to be as epic as it sounds.

Oh hey, I’ve been wondering what Ito’s been up to since FF12. Hoping Square Enix does the smart thing and puts him behind the wheel for FF15.

ATB-kai is superior they should give a chance for the dude who created that system not Itou.

sorry , Itou can create ATB kai easily if he want but he is not in charge of making action RPG , you should read more about him before make some nonsense comment like this .

Yes it is. So far it’s been a pretty fun game, but I’m a bit worried about it turning into a grind later on.

If you use my code, JG11928 (all caps), when you register in the game, we both get a rare card.

Ito is the one who should be heading up the FF series…the ones he makes tend to become classics.

“Final Fantasy XI composer Naoshi Mizuta made music for the game.”

THIS is why I’ve been anxiously awaiting the US release of the game for several months now.  Mizuta is a first rate composer – his FFXI stuff in particular has consistently excellent throughout the expansions, and his other projects are good too (the soundtrack is probably my favorite aspect of Blood of Bahamut).  Off to download!

    a trainable monsters card game?
it reminds me of “DIGIMON card arena/Digital card battle” where you can power UP you partner Card

I just don’t understand why the game still requires an always-on internet connection when all the art assets seem to be built in the app already (it has a pretty big file size in comparison to those other apps which just serve as an entry way app to play some browser game). Unfortunately, it looks like I’ll be missing out on this gem simply because of that fact. A shame since it looks really promising with some pretty good production values for a card game.

Remind me of Sword Girls Online… it’s been a while since I last play it, I’m sure I missed a lot already…
