BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Hands On With Lock On Grappler Bullet

By Spencer . September 24, 2012 . 1:56pm

bullet I played a tiny bit of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma at Tokyo Game Show. Arc System Works had arcade machines with the three new characters: Bullet, Amane, and Azrael to try.

I chose Bullet, a grappler character who also has attacks imbued with fire. Her drive move is a "lock-on" move that makes a ring extend from her. If this ring touches her opponent, Bullet teleports above and slams the opponent to the ground. The ring extends rather slowly so you can back dash away from it. You can use Bullet’s lock on move during a combo to end with a grapple attack. It’s also possible to add in an extra hit after the grapple slam too.

Landing a lock-on grapple powers Bullet up. The ring extends in range and she goes into "heat up" state. Do the lock-on drive in midair and Bullet does a dive attack into an opponent, if the reticule touches them. Bullet also has a grab move where she throws the other player to the right or left side of the screen. The other player bounces so you can continue a combo after using the throw attack.

  • … Why Laura why did you choose bullet, we all know we want Azrael!
    XD  Still looks like Chrono is going to be fun. Meh I might just have to cave and get myself a PS3 >_<

    • Laura? That’s Spencer there, unless he did some Kokoro Connect-y stuff D:

  • I’m sad she won’t have the same VA as Ragna. Sugita + character named Bullet would make me wet~

  • ThatAzure

    Sounds cool :P. I saw a bit of Bullet’s gameplay in one video that was released a couple of days ago. Nice to read about her attacks and stuff. Can’t wait for more gameplay videos/news on BBCP :D. I haven’t even seen any good quality videos of Noel yet D:

    Sounds like an interesting fighter though hard to say what sort of tactics I could use with it without seeing the character in action. All I can say for now is that the description of a ring touching an opponent allowing throws almost sounds like it should be used in a way a player might fight with Hakumen

  • “Makes a ring extend from her?”

    And it apparently releases a lock-on cursor. That’s suppose to stun the opponent in the air?

  • Herok♞

    Sounds like she will be really fun to learn, and did you notice any big changes from the other games, that completely changed how you would play?

    • I really wish I could have spent like an hour playing BB:CP, but ASW let each person in line play *one* round and select one character. Then you had to wait in line again. :(

      • Herok♞

         Well personally I am still jealous you got to play it early, so I can understand the pain of only getting one chance to play.

  • Looking forward to Chrono something something Extend Extra Plus Spaghetti a few months later ^^;

    • Herok♞

      You mean at least a year later right? If we are going by the times they released the console games it would look like this(Note these are the North American release dates):
      Blazblue: Calamity Trigger: PS3/Xbox360- 6/30/09  PSP- 3/9/10

      Blazblue: Continuum Shift: PS3/Xbox360- 7/27/10

      Blazblue: Continuum Shift 2: PS3/Xbox360*- 5/17/11 PSP/3DS- 5/31/11
      *Note this was a free patch for Continuum Shift on PS3/Xbox360

      Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend: PS3/Vita/Xbox360- 2/14/12

      And i’m looking forward to the day comments like this stop…ohwait

    • Curan_Altea

      Must you complain? This “joke” is so tired. BlazBlue games are 1 a year anyway, and each time was a legitimate update. Sorry to complain, I’m just so tired of the “waiting for (stupid words here) edition” thing.

      • This is no joke, this is the 5th iteration in 2 years.

        • Curan_Altea

          That’s a wildly inaccurate statement. A minute online could tell you otherwise, tit’s been one a year. Not exactly a year apart each time, but a reasonable amount of time. They made a game, a sequel, an update, and Extend was basically the ultimate edition with plenty of new content for $40.

        • Curan_Altea

          Well I’m not gonna argue with you. Legitimately sorry for posting in the first place, sometimes my emotions get the better of me. Bad mood+ fanboyism brings out the worst of us.

          3 years

        • TokkanRAM

          Arcade release dates disagree.
          BBCT = 2008
          BBCS = 2009
          BBCS2 = 2010
          BBCS2 Ver 1.1 (AKA Extend) = 2011
          BBCP = 2012

          “5 in 2 years” my ass.

        • Darkrise
  • Safros9

    Interesting fighting style. I have to wonder where they come up with some of these. I mean, I know that some of the characters are influenced by characters from other games but Arc really changes it up enough that the characters feel very original.

    • Luna Kazemaru

      Bullet is based if of what tager was going to be back when they where making CT

  • Darkrise

    I hope to see more of Amane, being voiced by Akira Ishida plus that ‘elegant’ style of his just made him a possible main.

  • How was her theme song?

  • Luna Kazemaru

    So going to main bullet

  • Göran Isacson

    For some reason, the only new character I found myself drawn to so far is Amane. I don’t know, but I just feel like both BUllet and Azrael are too much skin, too little gloriously weird detail/outfits.

    As for fighting styles though, I find Bullets the most intriguing so far- Amanes is kinda neat but nothing too special, and I haven’t really got a grip on what it is Azrael does when he “reveals weak points”.

  • nyobzoo

    Grappler eh, Guess I found my new character to main

    • Just Tim

      ..a la Nathan “Rad” Spencer from Bionic Commando, as portrayed in Marvel VS Capcom 3?

  • Pedro Victor

    Honestly? I don’t really like Blazblue’s reticule rings… I always think back to Unlimited Hazama, and what a cheap bastard he is as Arcade Boss.
    But hey, Bullet looks fun to play.

  • Natat

    Poor Tager, the character that’s using his rejected design looks better as a character than him.

  • neetyneety

    So, we getting comments about people going to main her, some going to main Amane, some going to main Azrael… for me personally, I’m going to main them all! Studying these new characters (plus all the little details and changes with the old ones) is going to make BlazBlue feel like a whole new game for me. Can’t freakin’ wait. :D

  • Mildra

    Judging by this, Bullet might be the first grappler-type character I can play without sucking at it. Quite a feat, I must say, as I have a poor history with that style of character (and to a lesser extent, counterattack-types).

  • umm anyone else think that she looks like a female ragna?
